The winter season and holidays are approaching, so here is Snowman! What makes this song wintery, you might ask? Well for one, the title is literally “Snowman”.

“Snowman” from “Earthbound” composed by Hirokazu Tanaka
Arranged by Elijah Brown (luminousmusic)

More Mother/Earthbound Music –

I have never played or done any research on games from the Mother/Earthbound series, so I can’t really explain what makes this tune significant in the game itself, but regardless, it’s still a bop! Went for another simple approach for this arrangement, avoiding complexity to make it more pleasing emotionally. With the simple chord structure of this tune (it is fairly similar to the tune “Little Sunflower” by Freddie Hubbard!), I decided to go with a nice Afro-Cuban groove, which was very fitting, changing styles from a jazz waltz to some compound meter! And of course, this couldn’t have been complete without my good friend David’s French horn playing!

I experimented quite a bit with some of the instruments here. If you notice in the sheet music (provided above) the score only shows what looks to be a jazz quintet, however I felt like the track needed a bit more for the feel I was going for. I soon added bass clarinet, which I had started learning about a month ago, ukulele, and some extra percussion bits. I also tried to incorporate more phrasing in the piano and bass while comping. Different chord voicings and fills really have a big impact on making the tune sound more interesting as a whole! I am currently studying jazz piano at a conservatory in my area, and teaching myself electric bass, so I think this is a good step forward in improving my playing skills on these instruments!

Well that’s all for now. Stay tuned though, as I have something huge on the way for Christmas!
