Our Kind of People wrapped its first season on FOX this week, and viewers are wondering if a second season is possible. The series ended with a shocker, which would leave fans with a cliffhanger.
Starring Yaya DaCosta, Morris Chestnut, Joe Morton, Nadine Ellis, Lance Gross, Rhyon Nicole Brown, Kyle Bary, and Alana Bright, the series follows what happens in a fictional town near Marthaâs Vineyard.
Karin Gist, the creator of the FOX drama, said the following about the future of the series, per Deadline:
âKnock on wood that we get a Season 2. The studio and the network have been so supportive. I think theyâre creatively happy with the show, so I think itâs a really good and positive sign. I have lots of great ideas for Season 2 that Iâll be pitching very soon. Iâm very, very encouraged by the possibility of continuing to tell this story because I think we still have so much more to do.â
Gist also teased about what fans would see happen in the second season of Our Kind of People:
âIf we get a second season, itâs going to be even more explosive. There will be more family complications, about the sisters, and bringing the family back together. Iâm also excited about adding some new characters that shake up the world a bit and exploring the themes of power and access. I think thatâs really relevant to whatâs going on in our country, particularly through the lens of this really wealthy African American family. Iâm really excited about where we could take this show and I know the audience is too.â
Ratings for the series were up for the season finale. Fans will need to wait to find out what that means.
What do you think? Do you want a second season of Our Kind of People on FOX?
For some recording artists, the pandemic and pop music made two strangely productive bedfellows. Especially, of course, for any composer with a deep misanthropic streak, like Mark Oliver Everett, aka E, the frontman for the quirk-rocking, lower-case eels. Heâs no stranger to tragedy, like the early death of his renowned physicist father, Hugh Everett III, and the later passings of his sister and mother (pain cathartically numbed in his bandâs aptly-dubbed Electro-Shock Blues in 1998).
Darkness, depression, and disappointment have hovered over his work for a pair of solo sets and 13 eels efforts, up until last yearâs Earth to Dora. That album touched on his recent divorce and new life as a single dad, going into lockdown with his young son, Archie, and two tiny new dogs that (he reported uneasily last year) donât bark so much as they shriek. But he found inspiration in the ensuing ennui, and actually riveted together a sturdy new followup, Extreme Witchcraft. As it turns out, the 14th eels disc is one of the most rollicking, down-and-dirty blues records heâs ever made.
It helps that the outing is co-produced by crafty PJ Harvey axeman John Pariah. Loud, bone-crunching guitar riffs dominate almost every track, from the surly opener âAmateur Hourâ through a pounding âGood Night on Earth,â as well as increasingly nastier growlers like âSteam Engine,â âThe Magic,â and âBetter Living Through Desperation.â Even the more polite entries, such as an initially-iridescent twinkler dubbed âWhat It Isnât,â quickly devolve into a brutally-screamed chorus of âShut up!â
Naturally, the albumâs title originated in a typical Eccentric place, reflecting his lifelong habit of filing away strange facts he stumbles across.
âA few years ago, I happened to see a news story about BeyonceĚ being sued by her ex-drummer, and among the charges was that BeyonceĚ practiced âextreme witchcraft,â which I thought was so funny,â the 58-year-old relates in his usual droll, deadpan delivery. âI was like, âBeyonceĚ? Really?â I mean, maybe if you were an ex-employee of Led Zeppelin that might sound believable. But I just loved those two words together, and now Iâve finally found a way to use âem.â
SPIN spoke with the eels leader ahead of Extreme Witchcraftâs release to learn more about the non-BeyonceĚ elements of the new album.

SPIN: This album is like your rocking blues record from hell. What mood were you in when you wrote it? E: The mood to rock in hell.
When we spoke early in the pandemic, you were navigating your way through your [4-year-old] sonâs favorite shows, like Paw Patrol and Peppa Pig. Whatâs changed? The only thing thatâs changed is the TV shows. And itâs sad that heâs graduated from Peppa Pig, which is a shame for me because I could watch that forever. But you know â every week itâs some different obsession. Heâs really into YouTube right now, and itâs weird how kids would rather watch videos of kids playing with toys than actually play with toys.
Are the songs, which start with âAmateur Hour,â sequenced in the order you wrote them? And that track seems to be asking, âAm I actually still a professional?â Well, thatâs speaking more in romantic terms than referring to my profession. And I rarely run them in chronological order â âAmateur Hourâ just felt like a fun opener.
And on an average cut, like âGood Night on Earth,â there are so many inventive guitars at work, especially the vibrato on the bridge â is that you or John Parish? Thatâs John Parish, and that (bridge) is just so cool. So that song is sort of the opposite of rocking in hell. Itâs about the fact that weâre all going through a tough time right now, obviously, the whole world is. But there are moments that are so good, and I was just realizing one evening, âYou know, the world is shit. But Iâm having a pretty nice time right now â itâs a nice evening, so letâs appreciate the good stuff.â
And obviously, during such dark times, a lot of us thought, âHey â itâs a pandemic! So Iâll eat anything I want to!â Hence your tune âStrawberries & Popcorn.â Well, the original inspiration for âStrawberries & Popcornâ is different than whatâs depicted in the song. Having a 4-year-old kid, a lot of the time youâre just focused on feeding him, and sometimes you forget to feed yourself. And one evening, I was hungry and I hadnât had anything for dinner, and I was too tired to make anything. And I looked at the kitchen counter and saw some of his leftovers â a bowl of popcorn and a bowl of strawberries â and thatâs where a lot of my meals originate anyway, is his leftovers. And I just thought, âFuck it. Iâm gonna eat that for dinner!â And I quite enjoyed it, and I can highly recommend it â itâs a great sweet and savory combination, it turns out. And then I turned it into a different story for the song, about a guy whoâs found himself recently independent, and heâs trying to celebrate his newfound independence. But itâs not all good.
It seems like youâre speaking in bigger metaphors here, like on âThe Magicâ and âStumbling Bee.â âStumbling Beeâ is definitely a metaphor. I think when I wrote it, I wasnât thinking about this, but now I think it might be just a Southern California thing, that you see a bee out in November. In the harsh winters of Virginia that I grew up in, I donât think youâd ever see a bee out in November. But I just saw one in January the other day â there are a couple of stragglers that were still out in the winter here, but they seem like they were drunk and trying to fly, but theyâre having a hard time.
Whatâs the âSteam Engineâ represent? And that is easily the dirtiest, meanest song on the record. Yeah, thatâs one of my favorites. But I donât think I was aware when I was writing of what I was thinking of. But when I look back on it now, I think itâs about, in general, just mortality, and how weâre all getting older. And you know, itâs like that John Prine song âHello in There,â which is about, When you see an old person, say hello in there â when you see an old lady walking down the street, you just think, âThereâs an old lady.â But she probably doesnât feel like what she looks like on the outside, you know? And thatâs something I can definitely tell from my own experience with aging, that that spark of your younger self is still there. You still feel vibrant, even though you look different and youâre aging. So I guess I was just meditating on that in some way.
How are Manson and Bundy, your two terrier-mix yappy dogs? Theyâre great. And part of the effect of being alone in the pandemic for so long is that Iâve turned into the dog equivalent of the Crazy Old Cat Lady â Iâm just so attached to them, and theyâre just so important to me. I wasnât ever really a small-dog person, but now Iâm just a huge fan.
I think I hear one barking on the album. Thatâs right. You hear both of them, in the song âWhat It Isnât.â The mailman happened to come, right when I was recording the vocal. And they barked right in that place, which was kind of a perfect place â right in between the first chorus and the second verse. And I just thought, âAh, well, alright.â I always put Bobby, Jr., my old dog, in our videos, and he sang on a song. So I just thought, âWell, Iâve given Manson and Bundy their shot in the spotlight.â And itâs almost like they asked for it by doing it right at that particular moment.
When it comes to winning and losing, I dunno about you, but I feel like a winner just to still be here after these past two years. Oh, absolutely. And I am constantly amazed that I am one of the lucky few people in the world who gets to do what they want to do for a job. When I was young, I had no hope for the future, for my future. So the fact that I got to make one album is still amazing, let alone all these other albums and the fact that Iâm still here, particularly with my family history. So Iâm always hyper-conscious of like, âWow! Iâm still here! This is a miracle!â I am always grateful.

In theory, every single person over the age of five needs to be fully vaccinated to enter a restaurant in New York City. In practice, itâs up to restaurants to enforce these rules, and recent news suggests the regulations are not always taken as seriously as they should be. For example: Over the weekend, Sarah Palin, who has been unequivocal in her opposition to any vaccination efforts, was spotted inside Elioâs, âa fine-dining restaurant serving classic Italian dishes on the Upper East Side of NYC since 1981.â A manager for the restaurant, which is popular with celebrities and other public figures, has said they made âa mistakeâ and that his team is trying to figure out what happened. Meanwhile, Palin tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday, which is not ideal news for the other people who chose to dine at Elioâs on the same night she did. But: What should you do if you know that a person who has chosen not to receive the vaccine walks into the same restaurant where youâre eating? You have questions; Grub Street has answers.
Help! A famous person walked into the restaurant where I had dinner over the weekend and Iâm pretty sure theyâre not vaccinated. How do you know that?
Well, what if I told you that last month the person gave a speech and said, âItâll be over my dead body that Iâll have to get a shot ⌠I will not do that. I wonât do it, and they better not touch my kids eitherâ? Grub Street agrees that it does not sound promising. But if youâre in New York City, local regulations require all customers inside restaurants to be fully vaccinated.
Well, what if I told you that a manager from the restaurant in question told the New York Times that their staff doesnât check the vaccination status of all its guests? Again, that sounds bad.
The good news is that, on an emotional level, Iâm personally âdone with COVID.â Can I still contract it? Yes.
So I have COVID? Not necessarily. The person youâre worried about might not have it, right?
They definitely have it. How do you know?
They tested positive three times. You probably have it. Are you vaccinated?
Iâm not here to talk about myself. Letâs not worry about whether I âdidâ or âdid notâ get a shot. Oh no. Have you taken a test?
I went to Duane Reade but they were sold out. I saw a van for a PCR test but the line looked long and I didnât want to wait. Seems irresponsible. Are you going to quarantine?
Yes. As soon as I finish this grocery shopping, Iâm going to head right home! Wait. Youâre out right now?
I need to get a few things! I want to try these New York TimesFrench-bread pizza recipes for a dinner party Iâm throwing tonight. Weâve all been through so much, and it seems like such a fun, kitschy way to relax! We all deserve a little self-care right now. Hold on âŚ
Iâll be honest: I feel great. I havenât been able to taste anything since yesterday, but other than that, Iâm fantastic. Iâm sure Iâm fine. You seem not fine.
Whose side are you on? Besides, if I have it, that means Iâll be immune now! I canât wait to stop wearing these silly masks! Thatâs not how it works.
Iâm pretty sure it is. Consider this: A famous public figure who tested positive for COVID-19 this week also had a case of it last March, which means that she, anyway, has contracted it at least twice in less than a year.
