Andre Rison Defends Raiders Coach Jon Gruden Amid Racism Scandal | News

0

Andre Rison, who played for the Oakland Raiders in 2002, says Jon Gruden, the former head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders is not racist.

Amid racist, sexist and homophic emails that leaked, allegedly from Gruden, Rison told TMZ, “We all say some things behind closed doors that we regret or we wouldn’t say in public. We’ve all made mistakes.”

He continued, “I believe who he said and what he said and who he intended it for, it was intended for that person and nobody else.”

Rison also had a message directly for Gruden, “You’ve already given this game some of the best tutelage and best leadership that you could possibly give. So if you don’t ever touch the game again, don’t feel any type of way. Go on with your life and enjoy it with the rest of the Gruden family.”

Jon Gruden officially resigned his post as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders after a series of emails leaked in which he repeatedly used homophobic and mysoginistic language.

According to CBS Sports, Gruden was already under investigation by the NFL for a 2011 email in which he used a racial trope to criticize NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith. Gruden also used profane language to describe NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

“I have resigned as Head Coach of the Las Vegas Raiders,” Gruden, 58, said in an October 11 statement. “I love the Raiders and do not want to be a distraction. Thank you to all the players, coaches, staff, and fans of Raider Nation. I’m sorry, I never meant to hurt anyone.”

Raiders owner Mark Davis accepted Gruden’s resignation.

The New York Times reported that Gruden’s controversial conduct extends far beyond those comments. According to the newspaper, he “casually and frequently unleashed misogynistic and homophobic language” to denigrate NFL peers from 2010 to 2018, when he rejoined the Raiders.

CBS Sports reported the NFL was “waiting on the Raiders to take action” and was prepared to “step in” if Las Vegas did not address the situation beyond a public denouncement.

Y: The Last Man: No Season Two; Efforts to Save Cancelled FX on Hulu Series End – canceled + renewed TV shows

Y: The Last Man TV show on FX on Hulu: canceled or renewed?

(Photo: Rafy Winterfeld/FX)

Y: The Last Man will not return to the small screen. Hulu canceled the series a few weeks before the end of season one in October, and Eliza Clark promised to fight and find a new home for the series. Those efforts did not succeed.

Per Deadline, Clark, showrunner and executive producer of the Hulu series, said the following:

“For those of you who have been asking me: we tried really hard to get another platform to pick up season 2 of Y. But sadly, it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. It is always incredibly difficult to move a show, and in recent years, it has only gotten harder.”

Starring Diane Lane, Ben Schnetzer, Ashley Romans, Diana Bang, Juliana Canfield, Amber Tamblyn, Olivia Thirlby, Elliot Fletcher, Marin Ireland, and Missi Pyle, Y: The Last Man follows what happens after an event “decimates everyone but one cisgender male, Yorick Brown (Schnetzer), and his pet monkey. The series follows the survivors in this new world as they struggle with their efforts to restore what was lost and the opportunity to build something better.”

What do you think? Were you hoping to see a second season of Y: The Last Man?

Ancient History: Aaliyah, Tommy Lee, and Donatella Versace Rang In Y2K

Ancient History

Welcome to Ancient History, a new bi-monthly column that unearths some of this magazine’s most iconic, yet rarely-seen photographic memories of yesteryear. This week, we’re ringing in the New Year by revisiting the year that launched a thousand and one velour tracksuits: Y2K.

Just over 20 years ago, we spent New Year’s Eve 1999 awaiting the end of the world as the seconds ticked down to Y2K. But instead of Armageddon, the early aughts were born—an era defined  by teeny candy colored sunglasses, precariously low-rise jeans, bellybutton rings, stripey highlights, and a slew of timeless pop culture moments that still reverberate today (looking at you, Euphoria). Britney Spears performed “Oops!…I Did It Again” in a nude catsuit at the VMAs, and Eminem inspired countless suburban teens to bleach their hair white-blond. The year 2000 shocked and delighted, and Interview’s own archive from the year is no exception. Below, peruse some of our best photographic moments from the start of the new millennium.
