TV show description:
The Goliath TV show is a legal drama from David E. Kelley and Jonathan Shapiro. The series centers on Billy McBride (Thornton), a down-and-out attorney in search of redemption.
The story follows this “David” of this story as he takes on the “Goliath” that is the well-heeled aerospace giant, Borns Tech, which is defended by Cooperman & McBride, a powerful law firm. In a legal system where the rich have their thumbs on the scales, and “truth” often goes to the highest bidder, this could be Billy’s one and only shot at justice.
Before his drinking took over his life and cost him his marriage, Billy was a partner at Cooperman & McBride and one of L.A.’s most important attorneys. Since Donald Cooperman (Hurt) booted him from their firm, Billy has relied on his street smarts to see him through. This is likely his only chance to recoup some of his former glory, in a battle against his former partner.
A war veteran and something of a hermit, Cooperman was once McBride’s friend, as well as his partner. Now, though, he is plotting Billy’s ultimate destruction. Does Billy stand a chance against Donald and his empire? Stay tuned.

Doss performs at Nublu in the East Village.
In a city bristling with nightlife, how do you throw a party to remember? For Doss, the main ingredients are a good disco ball, an intimate East Village haunt, and a curated lineup of rising DJ stars that represent a new frontier in the city’s post-pandemic downtown scene. To mark the release of 4 New Hit Songs, the Texas-born DJ’s first EP of original music in nearly eight years, Doss lit a fire at Nublu last Friday night with her first live set since 2019. The lineup, which included Hood By Air’s Shayne Oliver, internet legend Goth Jafar, Abby, and Nick León, was lovingly crafted, as Doss explained before the show, to give the people “what we’ve all been craving.” The party did just that—after a night packed with hot sets and a hotter dance floor, Doss’s performance was an electrifying homage to New York City’s club culture, stoking the energy with samples of Benny Benassi’s “Satisfaction,” Azealia Banks’s “Fuck Him All Night,” and lots of Lady Gaga (one of Doss’ more famous fans).
What did we learn from Doss? That we don’t need a giant warehouse and an exorbitant cover charge to have a good time. All it takes is an old-school downtown hole-in-the-wall filled with great DJs and a crowd that’s ready to dance the past year goodbye. Below, Doss joined us to reminisce on her highly-anticipated return to the stage with some exclusive Polaroids, and to share a few memories from an unforgettable night. Don’t go anywhere, the party’s just begun.

Shayne Oliver.
“The whole night felt positive, like a total refresh of nightlife. I felt really joyous, because we were all there for the same thing: to just have fun. It’s not about being scene-y or competitive.”
———

Alaska.
“I think the pandemic made people really step back and remember what their priorities are. People were so desperate for connection. Being around other people, I think that the negativity and arrogance, or anything that could have come with a night out, was totally gone, and that was the biggest flip for me. I hoped that that would happen, but you never know what to expect. It was just warm.”
———

Goth Jafar.
“I knew a couple of our DJs personally like Shayne and Abby. My manager knows Nick, and I’ve followed Goth Jafar on Twitter for a while now. I think she’s amazing. It was just really about connecting these dots, even if we’re from different genres or corners of the world. Even though it may have been a bit random, it all began to make sense as the night went on.

“When I’m making my own music, it’s an extremely personal and interior process. When I’m DJing, I want it to feel like the opposite of that. To connect with a large audience and lose myself in that moment along with everyone else in that space. I tried to pick songs that people feel familiar with in some way, like the remix of that Benny Benassi song. And I just love Azealia Banks. I’m so glad she’s releasing music again.”
———

“I thought I would be more nervous to be back onstage because the show was sold out, even though it wasn’t the biggest crowd. There was a lot of anticipation built up. I was really just exhilarated. The space [Nublu] was also so inviting and crazy with the bleachers vibe behind the DJ booth. Everyone was so hyped. It was just so fun. I felt super ecstatic.”

Los Angeles and St. Louis both reinstated mask mandates.

Last week, Atlanta restaurateur Armando Celentano posted a sign on his restaurant, Argosy: “No Vax No Service,” after identifying breakthrough COVID-19 cases among his vaccinated staff. Celentano explained his decision to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, saying, “I have to do what I think is right to protect the people who rely on me to make a living.” In doing so, he joined a growing wave of business operators who are taking a hard line against unvaccinated customers. Even without mandates, a growing body of evidence suggests those unvaxxed customers should avoid bars and restaurants no matter what.
COVID cases continue to rise sharply around the country, with the New York Times reporting a 144 percent upsurge over the last two weeks. Hospitalizations and cases have not increased as much, however. This increase in cases has led cities like Los Angeles and St. Louis to reinstate mask mandates, and Argosy is one of an increasing number of restaurants requiring proof of vaccination. (And today, per the Times, the CDC is expected to recommend “that people vaccinated for the coronavirus resume wearing masks indoors in certain areas of the country.”) One CNN contributor, Dr. Jonathan Reiner of George Washington University, has gone so far as to say that the unvaccinated “should probably not eat at a restaurant” because they “are at great risk of becoming infected.”
I emailed Dr. Purvi Parikh, an allergist and immunologist at NYU Langone Health, to ask about this. She replied, “Unvaccinated people should be very worried” about their health when going into restaurants. “I would be more cautious if you live in an area where vaccination rates are low or if you are a high-risk individual especially with indoor dining,” she added.
Restaurant dining rooms, after all, remain uniquely suited to spreading coronavirus: They are often poorly ventilated, crowded spaces where numerous strangers interact, ideal circumstances for viral spread among unvaccinated customers. Where capacity and social-distancing restrictions have been lifted, safety measures simply can’t be guaranteed. The spread of the Delta variant, which is responsible for 80 percent of infections in the U.S., can reportedly be transmitted in only five to ten seconds, according to Australian health officials, the San Francisco Chronicle reports, which is much, much quicker than the original coronavirus strain. According to one study, Delta is more contagious because there’s simply more of it in infected people, to the tune of 1,000 times more copies of the virus than the original strain. While breakthrough cases can happen, they are often not severe, while nearly all of COVID deaths in recent months have been among the unvaccinated — and according to the CDC, 97 percent of hospitalizations are among the unvaccinated as well.
Yet as vaccination efforts have plateaued — the number of daily doses has declined, the Times reports, from a peak of 3.3 million in April to just 537,000 — government officials have started to enforce vaccine requirements. Yesterday, the Department of Veterans Affairs became the first federal agency to require vaccination, and a group of major medical organizations has called for mandatory vaccination of health-care workers. On Friday, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio urged employers to require vaccination, and yesterday announced that government employees will have to get vaccinated or endure weekly COVID tests. California governor Gavin Newsom also says his state will require government workers and health-care workers to be vaccinated.
Florida, meanwhile, has taken the exact opposite approach: In May, Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation banning vaccine passports, and is selling merchandise mocking masks. The state now accounts for roughly a quarter of new infections, and DeSantis is asking Floridians to get vaccinated.
Dr. Parikh supports the vaccine requirement — which has been made policy in countries including Italy — being instituted by some businesses. “Requiring vaccine cards will likely be the next best thing to ensure safety,” she explains.

Ruby Rose is telling fans about a health scare she had this week that was made even worse due to hospital overcrowding.
In footage shared to her Instagram Story on Tuesday, July 27, the 35-year-old Orange Is the New Black alum let fans know she was rushed to the hospital this week due to complications from an unspecified surgical procedure she had previously undergone. To make matters worse, the ambulance was forced to drive around for hours because no hospital could accommodate her.
“I did have a procedure, and I had to have a surgery, but it was fine, and the surgery went well,” she recalled. “But then yesterday, I had a few complications, and I had to go to the emergency room.”
The actress, who announced her decision to exit The CW’s Batwoman in May 2020, began getting choked up and tearful as she continued to describe the arduous journey.
“By the time I thought, ‘OK, I absolutely have to go to the hospital now,’ we called an ambulance, and it took hours to find a hospital that would be able to take me, or anyone,” Ruby explained.
