‘Pig,’ the Nicolas Cage Truffle Movie, Is Out Now

0

This is the week cinephiles have been waiting for: Pig finally arrives in theaters across America. What is Pig? It is, of course, the film that features Nicolas Cage as a wild-truffle hunter who is searching for his kidnapped pig. (He uses the pig to hunt the truffles.)

Is this movie for real? you are likely asking yourself right now. Grub Street has seen it and can confirm that, yes, the movie is real. Also, it’s pretty good! It’s not without its flaws, but there’s a lot to like about director Michael Sarnoski’s debut film and a lot of weirdness to complement the story about a man who just really cares about his pet pig, which is named Pig.

It’s an experience, in other words. Here are some things you may want to know before watching it.

The movie is not “John Wick with a pig.”
The trailer and Cage’s recent oeuvre may make you think this is a simple revenge picture with a pig swapped in for John Wick’s murdered dog. But this is not the case. Instead, Variety accurately called the film a “strange, sad porcine drama” and “a reminder that Cage is among the most gifted, fearless actors working today.” It’s subdued in ways that fans of Cage’s cosmic freakouts may not expect, in other words, but may come to appreciate throughout the film’s 92-minute run time.

But there is an underground fight club for chefs.
Last decade, I went a few times to Friday Night Throwdown, an underground boxing series for models to beat one another up. (The last one I went to was hosted at a Bushwick gym; my friend swears Jimmy Chin was there, which, who knows? But plenty of people were.) In Pig, there’s something similar, but it’s far more bizarre and far less a scene. It’s literally underground and is run by an old acquaintance of Robin, the character Cage plays. It sort of comes out of nowhere, but it’s also going to inspire way too many cooks to try to start their own version.

The cooking scenes are better than anything in Chef’s Table.
Robin is not merely a truffle hunter leading a solitary existence in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. He is also a former chef, and the film knows how to handle its food porn. One scene follows a truffle hunt and shows Robin making a wonderful-looking wild-mushroom tart. Flour is sprinkled and dough is made and you will become hungry. Later in the film, Robin prepares pigeon breast with wild chanterelles and huckleberries. To save you from spoilers, we won’t say anything more, but it’s pretty bonkers.

Cage actually has a solid IRL appreciation of the culinary arts.
In an interview this week with GQ, the star of Con Air and Face/Off said that early in his life, he began to understand the power of food the first time he ate fried chicken with Champagne. “I’ll be darned if that wasn’t the best taste combination I’ve ever had,” he explained correctly. And, in fact, his love of food and fine wine goes back further than you may think; as he told GQ, he was 9 when this happened. “I don’t recommend for other folks who have 9-year-olds to give them Champagne, but that combination did have an impact on me,” he added. Parents, it’s up to you how you’d like to interpret that advice.

Understanding that everything is temporary will make you better at cooking French toast … or something?
In the film, Alex Wolff plays Amir, a truffle dealer who assists Robin in his pursuit of Pig. Amir is the antithesis of Robin, and we learn in one scene that he can’t cook for shit. When he makes a very bad French toast for Robin, the former chef who is now on the hunt for his kidnapped truffle pig explains that the land now called Portland was once underwater, it will be again, and we’re due for an earthquake that will wreck the Northwest. For Robin, this is a lesson in not letting yourself become possessed by earthly attachments, and he finishes by explaining the simple thing Amir did wrong with the French toast.

The film understands the difference between great food and fancy restaurants.
At one point, Robin arrives at one of the city’s posher restaurants so disheveled that one worker assumes he is homeless. (He’s not homeless; remember, he’s a former chef who now lives in the woods by choice, and he’s very good at finding truffles.) Again, we don’t want to ruin the scene, but this is a movie that doesn’t fawn over luxury lifestyles.

Nicolas Cage doesn’t freak out much.
As critics have noted, many people expected Pig to be the latest addition to the Nicolas Cage Loses His Fucking Mind for 90 Minutes canon. Alas, there’s just a dash of hysteria here, like a truffle judiciously shaved over a bowl of fresh-made pasta, so as not to overwhelm the senses.

It makes sense to do a double feature.
If you want to turn Pig into a back-to-back viewing experience, it makes sense to watch it with Roadrunner, Morgan Neville’s Anthony Bourdain documentary, which will also be released tomorrow. But you may also want to follow up Pig with a viewing of Gunda (which is distributed by Neon, the company behind Pig). What is Gunda? The New York Times describes it as an “astonishing” documentary that “offers an intimate look at the lives of a sow, her rambunctious piglets, a one-legged chicken and a herd of cows.” In a promotional blurb, Paul Thomas Anderson calls it “pure cinema.” It seems like the kind of movie Robin would like. So maybe watch that next to hold you over until Pig 2.

Richard Sherman’s Wife Says NFL Star Threatened ‘To Kill Himself’ During 911 Call | Sports

0

New audio of a 911 call made by Richard Sherman’s wife reveals that the NFL star and current free agent cornerback allegedly threatened suicide after a night of heavy drinking.

KRIO Radio tweeted out audio of the 911 call, which has Sherman’s wife Ashley pleading with a dispatcher to send police to their residence in Seattle.

“I need officers to my house now, my husband is drunk and belligerent,” she said. “He’s threatening to kill himself.”

She adds: “He’s being aggressive, he’s wrestling with my uncle, he’s threatening to kill himself. He’s sent text messages to people telling them he is going to hang himself.”

As the operator attempts to calm Ashley, she says repeatedly that there aren’t any weapons present but that Sherman said he would confront police if they responded.

“He’s saying if police show up — please don’t shoot him is what I’m asking,” Ashley continued on the call. “He has no weapons. He said if the police show up he will try to fight them.”

When the 911 dispatcher asks Sherman’s wife how much alcohol her husband has consumed, she responds: “Two bottles – of vodka and Hennessy.”

Sherman allegedly did struggle with officers when they arrived on scene at the home and was arrested by the Redmond Police Department. He was initially charged with domestic violence burglary.

Sherman was an All-Pro during his stint with the Seattle Seahawks and played for the San Francisco 49ers up until last season, prior to his contract expiring with the team. He has yet to sign with another team as a free agent before NFL training camps open this week.

Prior to Sherman’s arrest at his wife’s residence, the Seattle Times reports he was involved in a solo hit-and-run accident that severely damaged his vehicle and had him fleeing on foot. He was taken to a local hospital and later cleared and booked into the King County Correctional Facility, police say. His bail was initially denied.

Additionally, Richard Sherman appeared in court on Thursday (July 15) and was ordered to be released from jail following his arrest on the burglary domestic violence charge.

According to USA Today, Sherman waived his right to appear at an initial court appearance on Thursday and was represented by his attorney, Cooper Offenbecher.

He was ordered by Judge Fa’amomoi Masaniai to surrender any firearms, prohibited from using any non-prescribed drugs or consuming alcohol, and to stay away from his father-in-law.

Sherman also must return to court on Friday morning for a hearing on four pending charges he faces: misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor crimes of second degree criminal trespass and third degree malicious mischief (with domestic violence designations), DUI, and resisting arrest. The felony burglary domestic violence charge has been dismissed.

FUNNY BUSINESS (The Brodie Brothers #1) by KAYLEY LORING

“You’re the setup and the story arc and the main character and the conflict and the punchline.”

Kayley Loring is one hilariously witty and entertaining author, and if you haven’t discovered her rom com’s yet, then you’re missing out! Her wit, the banter between her characters, the warmth, swoon, and the heat are all trademarks of her stories which we crave and anticipate with every release.

The snarky humour in Funny Business gave us some giggles and the group text exchange (something Kayley Loring really excels at) was on point! And, after meeting Owen’s brothers, movie star Dylan and entertainment lawyer, Miles in Funny Business, we can’t bloody wait for more of this series.

Two comedians walk into a bar…Well, it didn’t actually happen that way! More… ridiculously handsome stand-up comedian/model Owen Brodie delivering his set in Tampa, whilst a disgruntled Frances (Frankie) Hogan, heckles him from the back of the room. For some reason, this guy grates on her every nerve. Exactly why, is something to discover later in the story.

“If we do this now, I’m going to give you everything. Even if it doesn’t last.”

Fast forward three years and their paths cross once again through Frankie’s Uncle Marty, who also happens to be Owen’s agent, arranges for Frankie to accompany Owen on his state-wide stand-up tour as Nanny to his sweet, laid-back seven-year-old son, Sam. Frankie is down on her luck, she has an instant rapport with little Sam and despite being aggravated by the charismatic Owen, she agrees to take the job. Besides, she and Owen can ignore the sexual chemistry, right? Right!!!

“You have to stop looking at me like that.”
“Like what?”
“Hot Guy Look.”
“I’m a hot guy. I can’t not do this.”

Funny Business is packed with antagonistic banter, family bonding, and passionate trysts. Tender moments appear courtesy of Owen’s son Sam and their wonderful relationship. The serious, nap-loving red-headed Sam and his ever-joking Dad bounced off each other beautifully. As did Sam and Frankie.

“He’s basically Garfield, but without the fur. Or the tail. Or four paws. Probably likes lasagne.”

We really enjoyed Funny Business. It provided many heart-warming and swoony moments! Our only niggle, as Danish/English and English/Australian readers, came from a personal bugbear. It’s always going to be a punt for an author to hit the mark with our country’s colloquialisms and whilst we understand the Aussie slang was written with exaggeration for laughs, it felt a tad over the top and outdated. The stand-up comedy routines also didn’t quite work in text, but these were very small issues in an otherwise funny, sweet, sexy, and entertaining story!

“I want your everything, Frankie. Even if it’s just a bottomless pit of sarcasm and veiled dick jokes.”

Your EDM Premiere: Sovryn Adds Some Cheeky Bass ‘Punishment’ to the ‘Weekend’ [Korsakov Music]

0

Since adopting his new bass moniker early this year, Sovryn FKA Barely Royal has kept pace with the punishing D&B releases that have typified 2021 thus far. His Static Vision EP was a breakout success and since then he’s become a Korsakov Music darling, releasing another EP with label boss AL/SO remixing High Maintenance’s “Hypersonic.” With that rate of release, it was only a matter of time before Sovryn had another EP ready to go. That time is now.

The three- track Weekend EP drops today, conveniently on a Friday  and once again showcases Sovryn’s unique production style. Coming from bass house, there seems to be a way Sovryn stacks up his sound design and synth lines that seems almost counterintuitive to most D&B; it’s difficult to describe, but it’s also difficult to deny in this EP. The title track featuring MC RightMind, for examples seems to swing a very conscious eye on the vox and the bass synths, charging them with more electricity than the standard D&B voltage. That’s not to say the beat’s forgotten, however, as Sovryn takes influence from old school darkstep, with lots of wind-downs and pitch-outs to make its presence known.

“Sensation” has even more throwback vibes, again with a cheeky focus on rave that makes the track both nostalgic and new. The rave samples are rife in this track, with vox from the classic “Good Vibrations” early rave synths and a heavy, throwback bass synth. If these tracks are Sovryn’s interpretation of the weekend, we are here for it.

YEDM’s premiere corresponding with the Weekend drop is the most punishing bass track on the EP, the aptly named “Punishment.” A near atmospheric, melodic intro quickly devolves into neuro-tinged bass synth that comprises the main melody, with what is ostensibly a jump up beat in carrying it. Glitched out to filth, “Punishment” really nails home Sovryn’s diverse tastes and production abilities.

It’s unclear whether Sovryn will eventually land on a particular style or subgenre with his work, but he really doesn’t need to as his sort of back-to-front production and focus on melodics is already so recognizable. He’s got a label that supports his diverse tastes and clean production no matter what style he tries, so our best advice is to crank up these tunes and get ready for the Weekend.

Weekend drops on Korsakov music this Friday, July 16. Pre-order now on Beatport.
