After recording the hit track in New York, the video for “Valerie” was shot in London in 2007. As Amy Winehouse couldn’t make the video shoot, production came up with the concept of Mark Ronson inviting multiple Amy’s to perform on stage with Jazz musicians in an underground club.

Lyrics:

Well sometimes I go out by myself
And I look across the water
And I think of all the things, what you’re doing
And in my head I paint a picture

‘Cause since I’ve come on home
Well my body’s been a mess
And I’ve missed your ginger hair
And the way you like to dress
Won’t you come on over
Stop making a fool out of me
Why don’t you come on over Valerie?

Valerie

Did you have to go to jail
Put your house up for sale, did you get a good lawyer?
I hope you didn’t catch a tan
I hope you’ll find the right man who’ll fix it for ya
And are you shopping anywhere
Changed the color of your hair, are you busy?
And did you have to pay that fine
You were dodging all the time, are you still dizzy?

‘Cause since I’ve come on home
Well my body’s been a mess
And I’ve missed your ginger hair
And the way you like to dress
Won’t you come on over
Stop making a fool out of me
Why don’t you come on over Valerie?

Fleetwood at Calistoga Motor Lodge and Spa Begins Full Service

0

Fleetwood, the new restaurant specializing in woodfired seasonal dishes at the Calistoga Motor Lodge and Spa, will open fully on June 24 with an expanded menu, new happy hour specials and a reservation system. After a soft opening earlier this month, Fleetwood continues to provide an approachable, communal concept that is a fun and unique addition to the North Bay dining scene.

“We have been delighted by the enthusiastic response to our soft opening,” said Chef Drew Glassell. “Now we are very excited to fully open on June 24 with an extended menu, additional beers and cocktail, and an all-new Happy Hour to serve both the local community and visitors to the valley.”

What’s New:

  • The expanded menu highlights new dishes including a Prawn Cocktail (U10 prawns are seasoned, grilled, and then chilled, and served with pickled cucumbers, watermelon radish and a Calabrian sauce), Piadini (Italian-style flatbread with garlic cream, grilled chicken, arugula, pickled red onion, Parmesan and mozzarella), a Fleetwood Burger (white cheddar, Little Gem lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, garlic aioli and fries), and a Dessert Pizza with seasonal fruit.
  • Local draft beers round out the drink menu, including brews from Henhouse (Santa Rosa), Sonoma Springs (Sonoma), Mad Fritz (St. Helena) and Tannery Bend (Napa).
  • A Happy Hour special will run Monday and Thursday from 4-6 pm and feature $7 wines by the glass, a $9 special cocktail, $6 beer on tap and a $10 “nibble” item that will change daily.
  • A new reservation system will launch on OpenTable this week for guests to book online with ease. Fleetwood encourages reservations but will continue to welcome walk-ins up to 6pm.

The accessible, seasonal menu, overseen by Chef Drew Glassell, emphasizes wood-fired pizzas and locally inspired dishes. Guests will find a produce-driven experience in which wine country ingredients meet the restaurant’s Mediterranean vibe. Fleetwood offers 10 wines, available by the glass or bottle, showcasing local wineries. Guests can also order among six signature cocktails and eight beer choices (four on tap and four canned). Cocktail highlights include Spritz Veneziano (Aperol, prosecco, soda, orange), Mertillo (gin, huckleberry, honey, lime, tonic), and Tuscarita (blanco tequila, Luxardo, Meyer lemon, lime, simple syrup).

Glassell became known for his culinary pedigree at restaurants including Cyrus, Market, Jardiniere, and Gary Danko. His most recent project, Roadhouse 29 in St. Helena, featured traditional smoking techniques that have inspired his menu at Fleetwood.

Starters such as Wood Oven Roasted Meatballs, Oak Grilled Heart of Romaine and Seasonal Chopped Salad are followed by Spinach & Ricotta Agnolotti and wood-fired oven pizzas including Buffalo Mozzarella and Speck Ham. Fire-grilled items offer classic takes with a Mediterranean twist on Striploin Steak, Rocky Chicken Breast and Oak Grilled Salmon. Polenta Cake and Affogato will ensure that guests save room for dessert.

Fleetwood is designed both as a community hub for Calistoga locals and as a must-do for visitors to the area with its prime location at the top of the Silverado Trail. The restaurant is designed to embody a sense of chill, much like hanging out at a friend’s home. A spacious, tree-lined courtyard and fire pit invite guests to relax, making Fleetwood a great gathering place to cap off a day out in the vineyards or meet up for Happy Hour.

The earthy design and cozy environment help evoke that spirit of community. A centerpiece tile wall between the two showcase wood-fire ovens anchors the space. Amber tile floors, warm woods and Italian patio lighting complete the space. Fleetwood offers on-site dining for up to 152 guests, with 65 seats in the main dining room, 33 seats for outdoor dining, as well as a bar and Chef’s Counter.

Two private dining rooms can seat 36 and 8 guests. Additional on-site spaces for private events include the Garden Room (25 person capacity) and 1,200 square feet of outdoor space that can accommodate 80 seated guests or 120 for a standing reception. Additional information on event space and catering is available here.

Restaurant Manager Neil Robinson partnered with Glassell at Roadhouse 29, leading the management teams and operations. He also oversaw renovations for Farmhouse Restaurant in Olema and served as a General Manager at Lark Creek Restaurant Group and Belcampo Meat Company in Larkspur.

About Fleetwood: Fleetwood offers woodfired fine foods in a relaxed indoor/outdoor setting. Fleetwood will be open five days a week, Sunday, Monday, and Thursday from 5-9 pm and Friday and Saturday from 5-9:30 pm. Keeping secrets, are ye? New Trailer for The Lighthouse Debuts

Legendary manga artist Junji Ito’s work is known the world over, and his latest foray into the world of manga will be adapting Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse.

As revealed by Comic Natalie, Ito has created a short manga adaptation of the film to be distributed in Japanese theaters when The Lighthouse releases there next month, on July 21. The manga will serve as a brief summary of the film’s plot, and judging by the small glimpses released, Ito has done an incredible job capturing the look and feel of the film’s eeriness.

Set in the 1800s, The Lighthouse tells the story of two lighthouse keepers who slowly descend into madness while trapped with each other in isolation. The film itself drew a ton of comparisons to Ito’s past work, particularly Uzumaki, due in part to its overpowering dread and slow descent into chaos. Ito himself was said to be a huge fan of the film, likely factoring into his decision to adapt the film in manga form.

Co-written by Robert Eggers and Max Eggers, The Lighthouse was shot on 35mm black-and-white stock using equipment from the 1920s and ’40s. Set in 1890 Nova Scotia, the film follows the story of an aging lighthouse keeper named Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe) who teams with a younger man named Ephraim Winslow (Robert Pattinson) on a remote and mysterious New England island.

RT Features’ Rodrigo Teixeira (Call Me By Your Name) and Lourenço Sant’ Anna developed the project with Eggers and are also serving as producers, alongside Parts & Labor’s Jay Van Hoy, and Youree Henley.

Jon Hassell, Influential Avant-Garde Composer, Dies at 84

0

Jon Hassell has died. The influential American avant-garde composer passed away on June 26, as his family confirmed in a statement on Facebook Saturday night. Friend and collaborator Brian Eno started a GoFundMe in April 2020 to raise funds for Hassell’s “long-term health issues.” “After a little more than a year of fighting through health complications, Jon died peacefully in the early morning hours of natural causes,” his family wrote in the statement. “He cherished life and leaving this world was a struggle as there was much more he wished to share in music, philosophy, and writing.” He was 84 years old.

Born in Memphis, Hassell studied at the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music before decamping to Europe to study under Karlheinz Stockhausen. (Among his classmates were Irmin Schmidt and Holger Czukay, who later formed CAN.) Upon his return to the U.S., Hassell would take a fellowship at SUNY Buffalo’s Center for Creative and Performing Arts, where he first met American minimalist composer Terry Riley.

In 1968, Hassell would perform on the first recorded version of Riley’s influential work In C. He later also worked with La Monte Young, joining the Theatre of Eternal Music drone group, and studied extensively under the tutelage of their shared mentor, Indian music singer Pandit Pran Nath. It was from Nath that Hassell learned how to utilize techniques in the Kirana gharana vocal tradition on the trumpet.

Hassell’s first album Vernal Equinox, released in 1978, is widely considered to be the first work in what he would later dub the “Fourth World” musical aesthetic. Hassell called it “a unified primitive/futuristic sound combining features of world ethnic styles with advanced electronic techniques”; a combination of the “first” world and the “third” world that he also described as “metaclassical and metapop.”

Vernal Equinox drew the attention of Eno, who Hassell would collaborate with on Possible Musics/Fourth World Vol. 1 in 1980. In addition to later collaborations with artists like David Sylvian, Peter Gabriel, and Tears for Fears, much of that decade saw Hassell further delve into the “Fourth World” concept, one that has proven deeply influential to numerous genres of music. In some ways, his work foreshadowed the globalization of music that was accelerated in the internet era.

As he told Andy Beta for Resident Advisor, Hassell was both “very heartened” and cautious about artists’ continued exploration of “Fourth World” music. “Now we’re in digital la-la-land, taking a millisecond or a few milliseconds of something that’s in the digital domain, and making it into something else… there is no original anymore,” he said. “You’ve got a copy of a copy of copy of a copy.”

In the 2000s, Hassell would also record with acts like k.d. Lang, Ani DiFranco, and Imogen Heap’s Frou Frou project. His last studio album Seeing Through Sound (Pentimento Volume Two) was released in 2020.

Teena Marie ~ I Need Your Lovin' 1980 Disco Purrfection Version

32

Hey it’s the first Motown Monday of 2021 and who better than Teena Marie to bring it to you!

Teena Marie….the ivory queen of soul! She was also known as Lady Tee and Vanilla Child although she was born Mary Christine Brockert on March 5, 1956. She had the music in her and as early as age two, she was already singing “The Banana Boat Song (Day-O) as made popular by Harry Belafonte and progressed to performing the songs of Motown.

Did you know she appeared on “The Beverly Hillbillies” under the name Tina Marie Brockert? She had formal piano lessons then taught herself to play guitar, bass and the congas! She built on her aspirations to succeed in high school, becoming the lead female in the school’s production of “The Music Man”.

A chance meeting at Motown for an acting role led to her fateful meeting with Rick James, who was there to work with Diana Ross. Once he heard Teena Marie, he dropped the Ross project and concentrated on Teena. Their first LP “Wild And Peaceful” produced a #8 R&B hit in “I’m A Sucker For Your Love” a duet with Rick.

She was “Soul Train”‘s first white female to appear on the show, and she was asked to return for a total of eight times. Her second LP, “Lady T” and third LP “Irons In The Fire” were released in 1980. “Irons” contained the #2 club hit “I Need Your Lovin”. A few years later, she was locked in a dispute with Motown over her contract and release of new material. Not one to be pushed around, she filed a lawsuit and won. “The Brockert Initiative” was the result, which made it illegal for a record company to keep an individual under contract without releasing new material from that artist.

Motown firmly behind her now, she signed with Epic and was allowed to run her own publishing company, At this point she was a self made woman, writing, producing and performing her own compositions. Her most successful LP, “Starchild” from 1984 contained her biggest Hot 100 hit, “Lovergirl”. The sinewy guitar driven song peaked at #4, #6 on the Hot Dance/Disco chart and #9 on the R&B charts.

In 2004, while she slept, a heavy picture frame on the wall over her bed fell and she suffered a severe concussion that resulted in momentary seizures for the rest of her life. On December 26, 2010, her daughter found her unconscious and she died shortly after that. The subsequent autopsy was unable to pinpoint the cause of death, so it was ruled natural causes.
She was 54.
