English Seafood Restaurant Dame Opens in NYC

Tonight, Dame officially opens for dinner, unveiling its crisp blue-and-white dining room on Macdougal Street off Bleecker to the public. But we — and doubtless hundreds of other folks — are already big fans. That’s because the English seafood restaurant had been operating in pop-up mode in the space right next door long enough for chef Ed Szymanski to gain a devoted following for his fish and chips—deceptively simple but meticulously done with a soupçon of Heston Blumenthal technique (a bit of rice flour and vodka for crispness) and a finishing mist of malt vinegar. According to the chef, that unlikely signature dish was just the thing to power Dame through the pandemic’s first summer. “It tied together the Englishness with the to-go mentality that was, and to some degree still is, necessary to stay afloat,” he says. And to satisfy customers’ appetite for more, he added light seasonal specials like tuna-belly crudo, shrimp salad, and bottarga-showered deviled eggs. “I had such fun doing it.”

As good as the food was at temporary Dame, the service and drinks and setting (all the province of partner Patricia Howard) equaled it. Any preview of their new brick-and-mortar runs the risk of sounding like a review of their pandemic projects, which ranged from a lawn-garden pen for lingering over Pimm’s Cups and drippy peak-summer-tomato sandwiches to a wintertime grocery stocked with sparkling produce and housemade seafood provisions like mussels in curry oil and saffron potted shrimp. It was all superb, displaying not only an uncanny grasp of exactly what people want to eat but how they want to eat it. At a time when fostering community is paramount, the Sunday guest-chef series—a pandemic-pop-up all-stars coterie, from Brutus Bakeshop and Ursula to Ha’s Dac Biet and Yellow Rose—became a destination in its own right. And Szymanski and Howard’s commitment to donate profits to social-justice causes garnered the sort of goodwill that’s almost a requirement for doing business these days.

If there’s a new way to open a restaurant, pandemic or no, these first-timers have figured it out — with no PR, no celebrity chef, no restaurant group backing them, and just their own initial 2K to kick off the pop-up last summer. (Dame Summer Club, as it was called, helped fund the permanent space in more ways than one; some particularly devoted customers became investors.) At the new address, the partners have installed wooden booths and a marble chef’s counter facing the open kitchen, but for now, all service will be confined to the 32 outdoor seats. A two-pronged wine list juxtaposes the hip “natural” brigade (categorized as “What Austin Powers is Drinking,” encompassing pét-nats and orange vinifications) with old-world classics (“What James Bond is Drinking” when he’s not drinking martinis: Grand Cru Champagnes, apparently). And Szymanski expands on the piscatory theme with dishes like smoked-whitefish croquettes, Anglo-Indian kedgeree with sea urchin, whole grilled turbot with smoked seaweed butter — and of course, the fish and chips that started at all.

It might be some time before you can sit here, but the outdoor set-up is just as nice.

JEGUDIEL (Deadly Virtues #2) by TILLIE COLE

0

‘They had all been alone for so long. The Fallen had banded together, an unbreakable unit of brotherhood, survivors of a life no one outside of them could ever believe. Their enemy was both hidden from the world yet thriving in plain sight. And these women…they were the same.’

We have been eagerly waiting for the next installment in the Deadly Virtues series by Tillie Cole. Our Dark Queen is back with our next Fallen book; Jegudiel where once again she showed us just how far she’s willing to go to take us outside our comfort zone, down a long dark path of terror, violent retribution, and sickening pasts. But as always, it’s also a path of healing, self-reflection, brotherhood, and redemptive love. We’re yet to read a book by Tillie Cole which we haven’t fallen in book love with, and once again she nailed it, giving us an addictive story, a compelling character connection, leaving us in utter desperation yet feeling hopeful too. This journey is far from over, rather it feels like it’s only truly beginning and we’re here for it, every step of the way.

“What we went through, what those men did to us…There’s no judgment for who we are, how we turned out. They condemned us. They punished us for who we are.”

We talk about our love of anti-heroes a lot, how they always have a hidden vulnerability and through the love of a good heroine find a type of redemption. Now we believe that there’s a fine line between losing that essence of what makes a character an anti-hero and achieving some type of character redemption. We love to see an anti-hero who retains who he is, accepts it, yet when it truly matters, shows that hidden vulnerability and heart. Tillie Cole excels in this, and we love her for that. Her dark romance heroes never lose what makes them uniquely them, they just let their broken hearts show amid their darkness. In fact, the heroines’ in this series celebrates them, supports them, and accepts them. Their unique love adding a softness and light to the darkness.

“I’d follow you straight into hell.”
“You did.”

How fitting that in Jegudiel, the heroine Noa, matches the hero in every way and if anything encourages and strengthens the path he is on. She saw beneath the skin of the violent scarred collared man; she saw the warring with his beast inside and she knew exactly who he truly was. We loved Noa for her strength, her loyalty, her protection, and her innate ability to see Diel for who he is and what he’s repressed from his traumatic past.

“His blood is your blood. His breath is your breath. His thoughts are yours. His needs, his lack of fear, his incredible strength, his fucking roars, they are all you…Embrace him. Protect him. Fucking love him!… You curb the darkness. You wait until you need it. It’s both your shield and your sword. The greatest weapon you will ever possess.”

We felt like suiting up and joining the Fallen on their mission to rid the world of the evil bestowed upon them as children, by The Brethren. The suffering, the atrocities, and the horrific violence are abhorrent and with the revelations in Jegudiel, this series just became so much more and we’re both excited yet apprehensive of what’s to come in this fast-evolving storyline. Tillie Cole really does write dark romance like no other, it is not written just for shock factor, the entire storyline is mapped out like an intricate journey, keeping its momentum, never wavering nor losing its focus or cause. The characters remain true to who they are, whilst adapting to a world where the terror lives in their heads like a continuous playing film reel. Retribution the only focus. We are loving this series!

“My Noa. My witch…My whole fucking world.”

RLJE Films, a business unit of AMC Networks, announced on Tuesday that they had acquired the U.S. rights to the rock and roll biopic Creation Stories, a film based on the life of Alan McGee.

McGee was the creator and founder of Creation Records, an infamous studio responsible for helping supply the “Brit Pop” sound of the 90s. From humble beginnings to Downing Street soirées, from dodging bailiffs to releasing multi-platinum albums, Creation Records had it all.

Featuring some of the greatest records fans have heard, the film will follow McGee through a drug-fueld haze of music and mayhem as his rock and roll dream brings the world Oasis, Primal Scream, and other generational talents.

“This film tells the story of one of the most iconic figures in music,” said Mark Ward, Chief Acquisitions Officer at RLJE Films. “With a soundtrack that will take you straight back to the 1990s and a filmmaking team that includes director Nick Moran, writers Irvine Welsh and Dean Cavanagh and executive producer Danny Boyle, we cannot wait for US audiences to go on the fantastic ride that is Creation Stories.”

Sparkee Flips Tiesto’s “The Business” Into Funky Disco Anthem [LISTEN]

0

Everything Tiesto touches seems to turn to gold, especially his single “The Business“. Recently, he held a remix competition via Label Radar offering the winner an official release on Atlantic Records along with $7,000 worth of studio gear and plugins. Over 3500 producers submitted tracks and one came out on top: Canadian award-nominated music producer and guitar player, Sparkee.

Influenced by artists such as Daft Punk, Chromeo, Oliver, and Nile Rodgers, Sparkee’s music mostly leans towards the NuDisco and Funky genres of electronic music and has been described in the past as “Daft Punk meets Van Halen”. His productions are smooth and infectious. It’s clear he has a big and bright future ahead of himself in the music industry.

Sparkee’s remix of “The Business” is flawless. It’s NuDisco and Funk at its finest, reimagining this global hit into something entirely new and super fresh. The track was released on Atlantic Records and has since amassed over 1,000,000 streams and still climbing.

When Ivan Yanakiev heard an instrument tuned to 432Hz, he said, it was like he’d heard God speak. For him, it is not just pleasant to the ear, but very helpful in unlocking mysteries on the level of consciousness itself. He wanted 432Hz to be spread around the world. If you can realize that you are listening to a lot of intervals, you can still hear the music in the silence, the beauty in the silence. The power of the interval can reprogram the subconscious mind in a positive way. This is extremely effective because no matter what the message an artist is trying to send both negative or positive, your subconscious mind can only understand, innerstand, and overstand 3, 6, & 9 aka frequency, energy, & vibration. Whether what you’re manifesting through this music is negative or positive, words without action and thought have no meaning, no purpose which is why that can’t manifest. When the words, thoughts, & actions are in the trinity, that reality is set to come in fruition. You get these full benefits in the mainstream music that’s mostly negative only if your mouth doesn’t talk 100x as much as your ears listen. Saying the words that come out of your mouth that are negative as you put, thought, feeling/emotion to it can convert into energy which your subconscious can pick up negatively. Listening to the majority of the mainstream 432Hz music can unlock the right brain hemisphere when you have everything that was said above in check. You can now unlock the creative part of your brain which is what you need to become limitless no matter what message it sends. Once you realize it’s true power, it would influence you more & more to listen to more positive music which in any frequency outside of 440Hz is better than 432Hz negative music since not only are you getting the benefits from the sound vibrations, but you’re combining your though, feeling/emotion into it full of positive radiant energy.

Afro Cuban Latin Backing Track for Drums and Percussion (Cha Cha Bass)

0

Practice your afro cuban drum and percussion grooves with this free drumless backing track and jam with a real bassplayer. The play alongs are bass only and you can play your drums and percussion to the bassline or the bass and a click. Get your free drumless backing tracks here:

With these bass play alongs you get the chance to practice your drum grooves with a real bass line. Drummers, percussionists and bassists rarely get the chance to practice together. Most of the time we’re stuck in rehearsals with all the other band members. The Grooveline backing tracks give you the opportunity to have endless groove practice with your own bass player. This gives you the chance to perfect a solid groove and rhythm.

My goal is to help you improve your groove and timing. I want you to feel more comfortable playing your drums and listening to the bass player at the same time. Focusing on each other is one of the key factors of having a solid rhythm section.
