Saint Laurent is no stranger to thinking outside of the box. One of their previous Rive Droite projects, in collaboration with Helmut Lang, featured a set of handmade and unique sculptures using raw materials like resin and aluminum. This time around, Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello has teamed up with the Italian design & architecture group Memphis Milano on the occasion of the group’s 40-year-anniversary.
The new capsule collection will also be accompanied by an exhibition hosted by Vaccarello. Think of it as a showcase of Memphis’s Greatest Hits. A few of the objects that’ll be on display are the RING bed designed by Masanori Umeda, the CARLTON room divider by Ettore Sottsass, and RIVIERA chairs by Michele De Lucchi in ’81. The pieces are fun, playful, and perfect inspo for your WFH furniture situation. Additionally, for Saint Laurent, Vaccarello has created an exclusive collection of two multicolored checkerboard hoodies, two dresses, one shirt, and two pairs of sneakers. The pieces combine the cool and classic vibe of YSL with the quirky and electric spirit of Memphis.
If you plan on being in either L.A. or Paris in the next month or so, you can catch the exhibition in both Saint Laurent Rive Droite stores from today, May 19 to June 23. There, you’ll find the perfect homeware pieces to add to your collection—from ceramics and textile accessories like pouches and scarves to ashtrays, plates, and vases. A selection of rare books about the history and works of Memphis will also be available.

Empress by Boon, the expansive Cantonese culinary destination spearheaded by Michelin-starred Chef Ho Chee Boon, is set to open on Friday, June 18, 2021, following delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Located at 838 Grant Avenue in the space formerly occupied by the landmark Empress of China restaurant, which served the San Francisco community with an elegant dining experience for nearly half a century, the exciting new restaurant will open with the goal of once again providing a place to gather and celebrate with family and friends. Chef Ho’s vision is to continue the special location’s dining legacy with modern, elevated, yet approachable cuisine in an elegant, reimaged dining atmosphere.
“I want to provide a positive contribution for the people of this great city that I love so dearly, and those who visit San Francisco for work or leisure,” said Chef Ho. “Cooking for people brings me the most joy in life and I’ve missed it dearly this past year. I can’t wait to share my vision and to bring new joy and excitement to Chinatown and the Empress.”
Before launching a curated a la carte menu, Chef Ho will present a prix fixe menu that features modern Cantonese dishes prepared with fresh and local ingredients from the restaurant’s own organic farm in Gilroy, California as well as an extensive wine list and cocktail and tea service.
Chef Ho has assembled a core executive team of experienced professionals, including general manager James Minch; pastry chef Rory MacDonald, formerly of Dessert Bar, Gordon Ramsey and Hakkasan; Haley Moore, CEO and founder of Acquire, who will oversee the wine program; Emily Parian as bar manager and crafter par excellence of unique, alluring cocktails; and private events manager Elissa Ma. Macdonald will offer a curated dessert menu that will complement and enhance Chef Ho’s modern Cantonese menu.
Chef Ho is a Michelin-starred chef with close to 30 years of experience at several of the world’s most renowned Asian restaurants. Born in Malaysia, Chef Ho is the former international executive chef of Hakkasan and has opened several of its most celebrated restaurants worldwide, including Hakkasan Hanway Place in London, Yauatcha Soho London, Turandot in Moscow, and Breeze in Bangkok. He relocated to the U.S. in 2012 to launch Hakkasan New York. His international culinary expertise transforms any restaurant and its cuisine into a true epicurean experience. Chef Ho’s traditional techniques combine fresh ingredients from local purveyors to produce dishes that are both contemporary and with the essence of traditional Cantonese cuisine.
Envisioned by UK-based design studio Atelier LLYS, the restaurant will feature modern elements alongside restored features from the location’s predecessor, including the beautifully carved panels and the original wooden pergola, which will grace the new bar lounge. Occupying the top floor of the landmark Grant Avenue building in the heart of Chinatown, the restaurant boasts striking views of the district and the city skyline from three vantage points. As each view is different, Atelier LLYS designed spaces with distinct atmospheres that highlight the unique aspects of each perspective.
Empress by Boon will feature tableware by RUYI, contemporary Chinese tableware from French heritage brand LEGLE. Chef Ho’s exquisite preparations and the fine tableware become linked, allowing diners to experience the prosperity, elegance and bliss of a fine Chinese meal.
Empress by Boon will abide by the San Francisco COVID-19 safety measures and dining policies including limiting table capacity, enforcing social distancing and requiring face masks when not eating or drinking. Chef Ho and his team will maintain restaurant standards and guest expectations while also prioritizing the health and safety of staff and guests.
Empress by Boon is located at 838 Grant Avenue (between Washington and Clay streets). The opening prix fixe menu is available for dinner from June 18 (Monday through Saturday, 5-10 p.m.) at USD68++ onwards and can be booked via OpenTable or by calling 415.757.0728.

On Monday evening (May 17), Columbus City Council approved a historic $10 million settlement between the city of Columbus and the family of Andre Hill.
According to NBC News, the $10 million sum will be split into two payments, one by the end of the 2021 calendar year and the other dispersed in the first quarter of 2022. It also includes an agreement to rename a local gymnasium in Hill’s honor by the end of the year.
On Friday, following the approval of the record-setting settlement by Columbus mayor Andrew Ginther, Hill’s daughter said it was a step in the right direction, but still not “full justice” for her father. Alvin Williams, Hill’s brother, thanked the city, peaceful protesters and many others for helping to set “this new positive trend about wrongdoing in policing.”
“We want things to change rapidly, immediately. As far as my brother, every soldier doesn’t make it through battle, but the thing is they’ve paved the way for everybody else to have freedom and the righteous way of living in a more peaceful society,” he said.

The city of Columbus has reportedly reached a settlement agreement with the family of Andre’ Hill, who was killed in December while visiting the home of a friend.
According to Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein, the city has agreed to deliver a $10 million settlement to Hill’s family, setting the record for the single highest payout in the Ohio capital’s history. According to local station WBNS, the settlement will be voted on by the Columbus City Council on Monday.
On March 26, the Franklin County Coroner’s Office released an autopsy report that revealed Hill was shot four times by former Columbus police officer Adam Coy.
Coy shot and killed the 47-year-old while responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the Ohio capital’s northwest side. A caller reported the vehicle parked on the street outside his home that was idling.
The autopsy report claims Hill was shot once in the chest and three times in his right leg. His manner of death was previously ruled a homicide.

“We understand that because of this former officer’s actions, the Hill family will never be whole,” said Klein, according to WBNS. “No amount of money will ever bring Andre’ Hill back to his family, but we believe this is an important and necessary step in the right direction.”
Ben Crump, the attorney for the Hill family, said the now-fired officer Coy shot at without first giving Hill any verbal commands to put his hand up and shot him four times. He also claimed the body-cam footage confirms the “unnecessary, unjustifiable and senseless shooting of Andre Hill.”
“Where is the humanity for Andre Hill? Where is the humanity for this Columbus citizen who had committed no crime, had no weapon, was unarmed, only holding a cell phone? Where’s the humanity for this citizen, for this father, this grandfather, this brother?” Crump said during a news conference in Columbus following the release of the body cam footage, according to ABC News. “It makes you wonder if they had been trying to save his life versus trying to put handcuffs on him, would Andre Hill be with us today?”
In February, Coy was charged with murder in the commission of a felony, felonious assault, dereliction of duty for failure to turn on his body camera, and dereliction of duty for failing to tell his fellow officer he felt Hill presented a danger.
A $1,000,000 bond has been set for Coy. He is currently awaiting trial.
The Godzilla anime that released earlier this year in Japan is set to make its worldwide debut on Netflix in June. Netflix announced today that Godzilla Singular Point will release June 24, 2021. The show features a unique art style as it blends hand-drawn and computer animation.

The show premiered in Japan via Netflix on March 25, 2021, and was then began airing on Tokyo MX the following week. Veteran anime studios Bones and Orange co-produced the series with Atsushi Takahashi as director.
Taking place in the year 2030, Godzilla Singular Point follows an engineer named Yun Arikawa and graduate student Mei Kamino. Despite being in different locations, the two wind up hearing the same song and are led into a battle that puts the whole world at risk.
Yume Miyamoto voices Kamino, while Arikawa is voiced by Shōya Ishige. Other voice talents include Tarō Kikuchi, Watari Takagi of Detective Conan fame, Misaki Kuno, Rie Kugimiya, and Ayako Takeuchi among others.

The series’ opening theme is “in case…” by BiSH, and Polkadot Stingray performs the ending song, “Aoi.” Music during the show is composed by Kan Sawada, while character design is handled by Kazue Kato (the creator of the Blue Exorcist manga) and former Studio Ghibli animator Eiji Yamamori designed the monsters.
Netflix has also released a trilogy of Godzilla animated films. First was 2017’s Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters, which was followed by Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle and Godzilla: The Planet Eater in 2018.
The estate of Avicii has revealed Nervo’s forthcoming production — “Let Me Show You Love (Don’t Give Up On Us)” — is “absolutely not an Avicii track.”
Despite all the excitement surrounding this highly anticipated collaboration, Nervo’s new version is considered a remake rather than a finished version of the original demo that fans have come to know and love. In other words, the track will not include any of Avicii’s creative contributions.
A representative for Nervo has confirmed to Billboard that the duo owns the song’s topline lyrics and melody, which they wrote for Avicii. Meanwhile, Avicii’s estate owns the underlying composition, which has not been approved for release.
Liv revealed in a previous interview, “We’re still working on the production because we can’t get it right.”
“It’s very difficult when you’ve had a record with so much history — there’s so much pressure.”
Nervo’s rep further confirmed “Let Me Show You Love (Don’t Give Up On Us)” will be released in the future, but an official release date has “yet to be determined.”
