Elon Musk, Azealia Banks, and Billions of Cicadas—Who Said NY Is Dead?

0

Straight from the Interview offices—from Manhattan’s midtown to Bed-Stuy in Brooklyn, sometimes L.A., and beyond—this is the Word Wide Web Bulletin—a compilation of some of the stories the internet has been murmuring about. From politics to drag, and everything in between. This week, Elon Musk and Grimes get weird on SNL, Cicadas are invading us (and so is Nicki Minaj), plus Azealia Banks hosts a wild dinner party. Let’s talk about it.

In News That No One Asked For, Elon Musk Makes His SNL Hosting Debut …

It is the episode everyone keeps talking about but no one wanted to watch. Yet, the entire world (including us) tuned in on Saturday night to see that weird little space guy do his thing on national, live television. When SNL chose to pair Musk with Miley Cyrus as the musical guest, it is safe to assume that they expected chaos, or at least some sort of commotion. The mega-rich are not of my interest unless they’re housewives and they throw wine glasses at each other, but you know what they say: curiosity killed the cat. The episode was filled with surprises, from the awkward appearance of Elon’s mother to his girlfriend Grimes making a cameo as Princess Peach in a wild Wario sketch. Not to mention the fact that the Tesla and SpaceX CEO caused the infamous meme-fueled cryptocurrency Dogecoin to plummet with a joke or two (or four). Of course, that was just the start of the simulation party. The episode overall was sort of mild, but it gave the internet enough to gossip about until the next crypto craze, or another out-of-control-missile falling back down to earth. Stay tuned.

… And So Will Billions of Cicadas

In yet another one of those WTF moments of our lifetime, billions of insects that have been underground for 17 years will emerge across Tennessee and New York this week. According to Science, this particular group of cicadas is known as Brood X and their grand appearance this spring is set to be the biggest emergence event since 2004. Okay, work, cicadas. Even cooler is the fact that as soon as these girls get above ground, they have one goal in mind: get laid. Did anyone say hot cicada spring? So get used to the annoying buzzing sounds these insects make, it’s just nature doing its thing. Live from New York, it’s Saturday night, baby.

Azealia Banks Hosted a Wild Dinner Party, Giving Us Major FOMO

Azealia Banks photographed Kacper Kasprzyk in 2012 for Interview.

After shocking the internet with her appearance at Leah McSweeney’s RHONY premiere party, where she partied with Lourdes Leon (and I stepped on her dress-train), Azealia Banks hosted a dinner party over the weekend that also served as a “waiting for Elon to make a joke” party. In attendance were friends of Banks, including McSweeney, Hari Nef, and other downtown celebrities and socialites. The internet was set ablaze when the videos and pictures from the night started to emerge. Not sure why, but it feels like a new dawn is upon us; one in which Azealia Banks keeps dropping big, big beats. NYC is back, bitches.

R.I.P.: The Cock Destroyers

Photographed by Matt Lambert.

No, they didn’t die. But the world is suffering a gargantuan loss after the Cock Destroyers, Sophie Anderson and Rebecca More, split unexpectedly. Last week Anderson took to Twitter to announce the split of the iconic internet porn duo known for their lips, boobs, and advocacy for the alphabet mafia (that is, the LGBTQIA+ community). Rumors are swirling around the WWW regarding their split, but all we can do is wish the pair good luck on their individual journeys. Take a trip back to happier times and revisit their Interview feature here. Who are they? Well, they’re the fucking Cock Destroyers, and don’t you forget it luv.

Nicki Minaj Can’t Wait for Friday

Alert the Barbs, the queen of rap has emerged like a dungeon dragon via an Instagram post. Earlier today Nicki Minaj posted two very hot pictures of herself, simply covering her body with two heart-shaped fluffy pillows, accentuated by her pink sunglasses, and matching pink Crocs with icy accessories. The caption? “F R I D A Y 🤞🏽”—An ominous but clear message for her fans and the world. Let’s hope this means a new Minaj bop is coming our way. In the meantime, revisit the time the rapper gave us her thoughts on Lil’ Wayne, her mentor, back in 2011. Alexa, play “Starships.”

ALL-NEW TAPAS RESTAURANT COMEDOR OPENS AT THE HISTORIC LA CASA DEL CAMINO HOTEL

0

Laguna Beach’s historic La Casa del Camino hotel is welcoming guests back to its dining room and patio for an all-new, upscale Southern Californian tapas experience. Appropriately named Comedor, the reimagined restaurant has undergone a Spanish revival retouch, emulating the 1930s accents echoed throughout the recently renovated hotel property and creating a charming hub for visitors and locals alike.

Diners are encouraged to come together and connect over Comedor’s vibrant and elegant menu, developed by Chef Marcel Vigneron. He is best known for his runner-up finish on Season 2 of Bravo’s hit reality series, “Top Chef;” appearances on Food Network’s “The Next Iron Chef,” “Iron Chef,”  “Food

Fighters,” “America’s Best Cooks,” ”Cutthroat Kitchen: Superstar Sabotage,” and “Chopped: Celebrity Chef Charity Edition;” as well as his former involvement in Los Angeles-based restaurants Wolf and Tacos Lobos.

Vigneron’s tapas selection for Comedor include traditional Spanish favorites such as Charred Spanish Octopus with Squid Ink Romesco and Papas Arrugadas with Aioli and Mojo Rojo, and as well as more unexpected creations like Carrot Fritters with Tamarind Yogurt Sauce. Main dishes, like the Rossejat de Fideos— Paella-style vermicelli with lobster, shrimp, and calamari, cooked in a seafood broth– are elevated and technical, with a modern twist. Desserts range from the fresh Pear Tart, to the decadent Molten Chocolate Cake, served with vanilla ice cream and a sesame streusel.

“As with the hotel itself, we wanted the menu at Comedor to reflect Southern California’s rich and cultured history, as well as its vibrant present,” said Chef Vigneron. “Our cozy, yet elegant dining experience now serves as an extension of the ‘home’ La Casa del Camino provides its visitors.”

Comedor also features a show-stopping lineup of cocktails, curated by mixologist Devon Espinosa, who recently crafted menus for Santa Barbara’s iconic Hotel Californian. The Smoking Musket (Rye, Beckrovka, Doiln Blanc, Green Apple)  features an Insta-worthy smoke reveal presentation, while the Chai Old Fashioned, features Laird’s Apple Jack, Rittenhouse Rye, and Chai Syrup, and is garnished with a flamed orange peel.

“As we slowly emerge from a time of isolation, we’re proud to present a dining room where people can reconnect with loved ones and exchange laughs over food and drinks made from the heart,” said Spencer Kushner, Comedor’s Director of Food and Beverage. “With Comedor, we hope to take the historic charm and scenic dining experiences guests have come to love from La Casa del Camino to the next level.”

The restaurant’s design comes from LA-based interior designer Matt Winter, who is known for designing the show stopping interiors for Gjusta Bakery in Venice, Fia Restaurant in Santa Monica, Manuela in Los Angeles and, more recently, La Casa del Camino’s Rooftop Lounge earlier this year. At Comedor, diners will be seated at elegant carrera marble and carved wooden tables, situated beneath beautiful wrought iron chandeliers. Additional Spanish Revival-style accents include colorful tile-work and gothic sconces.

“In all of my work for the Casa del Camino property, and specifically Comedor, I wanted to stay true to a classic design while paying homage to the history of the building and its original architecture,” explains Winter. “We were able to slightly modernize the exquisite California spanish features with our choice of materials and colors, original era-appropriate lighting, and upcycled furniture to give it an authentic feel.  I wanted to evoke a familiar yet comfortable feeling from guests while helping to make the space come alive and highlight the building’s almost 100 year old bones. I’m really so pleased with the result.”

Comedor opened to guests for indoor dining at a limited capacity on April 30, 2021. Reservations, which are highly recommended, are available through Resy.

Oprah Winfrey And Prince Harry’s Premiere Date For Their Mental Health Docuseries On Apple TV+ Revealed

0

Prince Harry and Oprah Winfrey’s mental health docuseries The Me You Can’t See is scheduled to premiere on Apple TV+ on May 21.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will debut two months after Winfrey’s CBS interview with the Sussexes. The royals spoke about their battles with mental health after experiencing racism, hostile press criticisms, and pressures due to their roles.

The multipart documentary explores issues of mental health and emotional wellbeing by focusing on the personal stories of high-profile people.

The series will have appearances from stars such as Lady Gaga, Glenn Close, and NBA veterans DeMar DeRozan and Langston Galloway open up about their struggles with mental health. Mental health advocate and speaker Zak Williams, Olympic boxer Virginia “Ginny” Fuchs, celebrity chef Rashad Armstead are also among the people set to feature.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Me You Can’t See producers partnered with 14 accredited and respected mental health experts and organizations from around the world to help shed light on different pathways to treatment.

The series is directed and executive produced by Emmy-winner Dawn Porter (Gideon’s Army, John Lewis: Good Trouble) and Oscar-winning documentarian Asif Kapadia (Amy, Senna, Diego Maradona). Alex Browne is serving as showrunner.

“Now more than ever, there is an immediate need to replace the shame surrounding mental health with wisdom, compassion, and honesty,” Oprah Winfrey said in a statement. “Our series aims to spark that global conversation.”

“We are born into different lives, brought up in different environments, and as a result are exposed to different experiences. But our shared experience is that we are all human,” Prince Harry said in a statement. “The majority of us carry some form of unresolved trauma, loss, or grief, which feels—and is—very personal. Yet the last year has shown us that we are all in this together, and my hope is that this series will show there is power in vulnerability, connection in empathy, and strength in honesty.”

The docuseries will become part of Winfrey’s portfolio of content on Apple TV+, including the series The Oprah Conversation, Oprah Talks COVID-19, and Oprah’s Book Club.

The Me You Can’t See is also executive produced by Harpo Productions’ Terry Wood and Catherine Cyr and RadicalMedia’s Jon Kamen, Dave Sirulnick. The series is produced by Jen Isaacson and Nell Constantinople, reported The Hollywood Reporter.
