Kalen Allen Sounds Off on Birth Charts, Blockbuster, and BeyoncΓ©

0

Kalen Allen

Photos by Kim Newmoney.

As a recent guest host on The Ellen Showβ€”featuring Kelly Rowland and Angelica Ross as his guestsβ€”Kalen Allen has proven that he really can do it all. Last year, he made his acting debut in Seth Rogenβ€˜s An American Pickle,Β released a Christmas album, and earlier this year, became a judge on the baking competition series Cakealikes. As a jack of all trades, it only made sense that Allen give us his opinions on a bunch of topics at semi-randomβ€”from edibles to The Cheesecake Factory.

β€”β€”β€”

Birth Charts

I am a firm believer in astrology, and maybe that’s just because when I scroll through Instagram and I go through the Capricorn posts, I’m like, β€œOh yeah, that’s spot on.” I’m sure a lot of people probably say that it’s rigged somehow, but I firmly believe in it and it helps me figure out who I am and why I am the way that I am and how I operate. So Capricorn is the main one, and then my rising is Scorpio and my moon is in Gemini.

β€”β€”β€”

The Cheesecake Factory

Oh, now see, this was set upβ€”you already know how I feel about The Cheesecake Factory because that brown bread is everything. When the waiter comes, I’ll say, just give me the brown bread. I don’t know why people were on Twitter last week talking about how Cheesecake Factory is beneath them. That is not true. The last time I was at Cheesecake Factory, you know who was there? Tyra Banks. Tyra Banks can go to Cheesecake Factory. Everybody knows that when they were in high school and when they would go to prom, when you left prom, where did you go? Cheesecake Factory. But everybody wants to be bougie all of a sudden. And then also, they have this pineapple cherry limeade. Baby, it’ll treat you right. Mmhmm. But they don’t give refills, so I have to tell them to bring me two at a time.

β€”β€”β€”

New York City vs. Los Angeles

New York City any day over Los Angeles. There is a different energy about that city, it’s timeless. You just feel like you can do anything when you are in New York. That energy can not be matched. And everybody is so independent; they mind they own business and they have a sense of authenticity and realness that can not be duplicated here in L.A. My favorite place to travel is Barcelona. Oh, yes. I can’t wait to go back to Spain. Mainly because the men like me there, and I’m always looking for a potential husband. I definitely need to go back to Spain to find me a man and bring him back. Like, maybe you need a green card or something.

β€”β€”β€”

Marvel

So I started watching the Marvel films during the pandemic, and I’m obsessed. I love WandaVision. That’s the best TV I’ve seen in a long time. Now I’m watching Falcon and the Winter Soldier. I love that too, because baby, this Captain America… they need to go ahead and kill him. I’m tired of him. I would have to say that the one Marvel movie that I was absolutely hooked on was Dr. Strange, which was so interesting because it came out when I was working for AMC theaters in Philadelphia. I could’ve gone and seen the movie, but I was just like, β€œEh, I’m not in superhero movies.” But baby, when I watched the movie, I was hooked.

β€”β€”β€”

Beyoncé’s Albums, Ranked

Oh my god. Oh, that’s hard. Okay. Let me think. I would have to give number one to B’Day. Number two, I would have to give that to 4. Three, I would give it to The Gift. Four, I would give it to Lemonade. Five, I would give that to I Am… Sasha Fierce. Six would be BeyoncΓ©. Is that all of them? Yeah, self-titled was my least favorite. I don’t know why; it’s just not my favorite.

β€”β€”β€”

The Sex and the City Reboot

Yeah, I’m going to watch it. That’s another thing that I started watching during the pandemic. I had never seen Sex and the City. I also watched the movie, and I was obsessed. I’m definitely going to watch the reboot, and I just hope that they bring in some diversity. If they need a character, I can definitely come in and play a role. I love Carrie. I don’t necessarily think that I’m specifically one of the characters. I think I’m a little bit of each one of them.

β€”β€”β€”

Hosting The Ellen Show

Oh, I absolutely loved it, it was the first time in my life that I felt like I did something. I was like, β€œThis is what I’m supposed to be doing and this feels completely right.” We had a virtual audience, which was great, but I would’ve loved to be able to look out into the audience and see the faces and feel the energy. I think if I would have had that element, then the show would’ve been even 10 times better. Now I’ve been talking about wanting my own talk show. I want a hybrid between Ellen and Oprah. I know that Oprah took a more journalistic approach, and so I’ve even been thinking about possibly applying to NYU’s online master’s journalism program.

β€”β€”β€”

Edibles

Okay, so I did my first edible a couple of weeks ago after going to Aspen. And baby, I can tell you this, never again. First of all, I was literally going crazy, and it was to the point where I was telling my friend Tori, β€œPlease search how to get rid of a high.” It was miserable. I was so tired, my mouth was dry, I felt like I was going to choke and die. I hated it. It was a capsule. Wouldn’t recommend it.

β€”β€”β€”

Lil Nas X

I think Lil Nas X is doing something that is going to be very game-changing. As far as Black queer artists within the music industry, because there is little to none. I think that Lil Nas using his platform to make such a statement and to come out so authentically and so unapologetically is going to help other people to be more accepting of queer artists who also express that same individuality and expression.

β€”β€”β€”

Mariah Carey

Oh, everybody knows that I’m a lamb. Love her dearly. I think she is an amazing songwriter and I think she’s an absolute icon. When it comes to favorite songs, I don’t even know if I can pick one specifically, but if I did, it would have to be β€œOutside,” which is from the Butterfly album. And with that, I say that Butterfly is her best album. I read Mariah’s book and it turns out that Butterfly was actually the first album that she was able to have a lot more creative control on her own, outside of Tommy Mottola, and I was like, β€œSee?!” Her fingers just needed to be unlocked.

β€”β€”β€”

Blockbuster

I am happy that there is one left in the world. I came across this tweet from Blockbuster and they were talking about Netflix, but trying to downplay them. And I was like, β€œWell sweetheart, look, when you do clownery, the clown comes back to bite, because where you at now?” Now you only got one remaining. But I remember going to Blockbuster as a kid, I remember going to Hollywood Video. I do miss the experience. But I also think it’s great that if I’m sitting at home, I can find my favorite movie and watch it from home.

β€”β€”β€”

Recent Obsessions

Let me think. I’ve been binge-watching The Nanny. I’ve really been in my nostalgic bag. I’ve been watching That’s So Raven. I’m excited about this Proud Family reboot. I I’ve really been starting to read a lot more, right now I am reading Michelle Williams’s book from Destiny’s Child, which is coming out soon, so I have an advanced reading copy. Quinta Brunson, who really pioneered and started what is going viral on the internet, has a new book, and so I’ve been reading that as well. I’ve really been in my intellectual bag.

Kuih Cafe Specializes in Malaysian Sweets and Snacks

Every Tuesday, the owners of Kuih Cafe, which opened last February weeks before the restaurant shutdown, take to Instagram to blast out the week’s menu. Often there’s pandan, sometimes kaya (the coconut custard), likely ube or sticky rice β€” all ingredients that the Malaysian café’s chef and co-owner Veronica Gan uses to make her specialty, Nyonya-style kuih. One week there may be kuih dadar, pandan-flavored crΓͺpe filled with palm-sugar grated coconut; another time kosui, steamed rice flour with coconut milk, palm sugar, and grated coconut; or maybe pulut panggang, sticky rice stuffed with shredded coconut and dried shrimp, wrapped in banana leaf, and grilled.

Other kuih may be made with steamed sago, a starch that comes from palm trees, or grated or steamed cassava. New items are regularly introduced, like hae bee hiam, a savory butter cookie made with blended chili-dried shrimp paste. Other butter cookies, made savory with scallion or sweet with pineapple compote, are offered as well. While some of the city’s other Malaysian restaurants offer kuih, including the nearby Kopitiam and Little House in Queens and Brooklyn, none specialize in kuih or offer such a variety.

A broad category of snacks that are often but not always sweet, kuih can include everything from cookies to cakes to dumplings. Often they’re made with sticky rice or sticky flour, but mung bean flour, steamed or grated cassava, and steamed sago β€” a starch that comes from palm trees β€” are also used. Many are steamed, though some are grilled (like pulut panggang), and others are fried (like cucur badak, a sweet-potato ball stuffed with a spicy filling of shredded coconut and dried shrimp). These snacks have also been rare enough to find in New York that the opening of a cafΓ© that specializes in them has caused a stir.

β€œAll the Malaysian people in New York have been talking about this place,” says Auria Abraham, who runs the condiment company Auria’s Malaysian Kitchen. Over kuih one afternoon, Abraham shared some DMs she’s received from others asking if she’d gone, or telling her she needs to. β€œI can die now,” one person wrote alongside a picture of a pandan-flavored angku kuih, traditionally a tortoise-shelled cake made of glutinous rice flour that’s made red by sweet potato. β€œIt has been hard to find Malaysian food, especially in this category,” Abraham says. While Kuih Cafe’s owners are Malaysian, Abraham notes that many kuih can be found around Southeast Asia, β€œPeople want to claim things are theirs, but especially in Southeast Asia we have to be very careful about that,” she says.

Some of the kuih are made with cassava, like getuk ubi kayu.

Gan opened Kuih with her husband, who works the shop with her, and her friend Barnny Lim, an FIT graduate who described his early role as a β€œbusiness adviser” and now helps with operations and marketing. (He comes from a background in fashion retailing, and also went to a hotel-management school in Switzerland.) The storefront, which debuted in February 2020, could be easily missed if you blink. Currently, it’s only open from Friday through Sunday, and there’s only room for four stools at the counter (though there’s no seating at the moment). The cafΓ© is around the corner from Sara Delano Roosevelt Park, though, which on a nice day is better anyway.

Along with the kuih, there are always slices of chiffon and sponge cakes, in flavors like black sesame, ube-taro, or pandan layered with pandan kaya, and eggier Basque cheese cakes, made with durian purΓ©e or or spiced pumpkin. (Some of these cakes are less traditional, Abraham points out, like the recently introduced baked honey cheddar cake, finished with a melted cheddar cheese that is stoner bait.) Savory dishes are the coconut on top of the sweet mung bean cake: Gan offers one like Hainan chicken rice, curry cheong fun, or steamed savory pumpkin cakes with dried shrimp and Chinese sausage.

The team chose Chinatown in part because Gan’s customers had found it inconvenient to pick up from where she lived in Queens. (β€œEveryone goes to Chinatown anyway,” Lim says.) That is, until the coronavirus pandemic, which caused sales to plummet in the neighborhood earlier than elsewhere, and later prompted the restaurant shutdown. β€œIt was pretty much managing the day-to-day process of producing and selling, and then 30 days later we had to close,” Lim says. β€œThere was really no time to reflect on anything at all.”

In some ways, Lim says they were lucky, because the lockdown forced them to rework their menu. Before, they had sold individual kuih, and there are always slices of cakes available. After the shutdown, they pared down the selection of kuih, offering only a couple a week, and changing it weekly. β€œIt was more out of necessity than actual strategy or thinking. But obviously it fits us well and we’ll continue that,” he adds. β€œThe positive side is it brings people back every week because there’s something different.”

Back in Malaysia, Abraham says, kuih are a specialty that require an expertise in steaming and specialized equipment. Doing things traditionally means spending time pounding and squeezing juice out of pandan, and grating cassava. β€œIt’s very laborious, painstaking work,” Abraham explains, giving angku kuih, which are made using a wooden mold that gets sticky, as one example. She also points to kuih lapis, a cute layer cake that’s made from rice flour turned shades of pink. β€œIt’s not easy to make those layers. There’s not a machine that does it, there’s a person that does it,” she says. β€œBecause each piece is so intricate and it takes so long to produce these pieces they don’t really make anything else.”

Fans of Kuih Cafe know to look for their favorites, and things they’ve had a hard time finding in New York, regularly. Hai-Li Kong goes every other week, usually when she’s visiting her sister nearby.Β β€œI’m not there every weekend,” she says, but β€œI’ll make a point to go there whenever I’m in Chinatown.” She’s always on the lookout for one special treat: β€œI actually haven’t tried the thing I’m most curious and nostalgic about, which is the angku kuih,” she says. β€œMy mom used to make them every Mid-Autumn Festival, but I have yet to have it because every time I get there it’s too late.”

When Kong was growing up, kuih were a special-occasion food, typically something she’d have when she visited family in Singapore. In particular, angku kuih created a sense of belonging for her, including during the time she visited her mom’s hometown. β€œI was just in the city and I didn’t speak Chinese very well and everything felt so crazy and foreign to me, and I was like how can I feel so out of place in a place that should be like my hometown in a way?” she recalls. β€œAnd then I saw this cake and I was like, Oh, I know this cake, and I can call it by its name, and point to it, and communicate with the shop owner β€” that was pretty powerful for me.”

Book Review β€” Could Have Been Us by Corinne Michaels β€” Aestas Book Blog

0

β€œDo you want me?”
β€œLike the fucking air I breathe.”

SQUEEEE! I really loved this book! It was heartfelt, romantic and full of feels!

I’ve loved Corinne Michaels’ books for years because they often have such a good balance of angsty romance and family connections and this book was no exception. In fact, it actually had a very family-centric storyline and that was a huge reason why I enjoyed it so much.

Fifteen years ago, I fell for Jack O’Donnell. I was just a girl, but I knew my brother’s best friend was the only man I’d ever love. On my eighteenth birthday, when I asked him to kiss me, I never imagined it would change my life so completely. I gave Jack everything that night. In order to move on, we had to go our separate ways and pretend like nothing happened… as though it wasn’t the greatest moment of my life. But even that wasn’t as heartbreaking as the secret we were forced to keep. I’ve tried not to think about how much I still love him. How I long to be back in his strong arms or the way his hazel eyes make my heart race. Until he kisses me again. And this time there’s no turning back. This time I know what it means. We belong together and there’s no use denying it any longer. But our feelings aren’t the only thing that won’t stay buried, our past resurfaces and threatens to destroy our second chance at happiness. When our love is tested once again, will we be strong enough to stand together?

The story centers around a couple who fell in love young and got pregnant, but their family forced them to give their baby up for adoption and circumstances kept them apart for many years. Around the time the book starts, an unexpected tragedy brings their child back into their lives while giving them the second chance at a love they were denied so many years ago.

My only complaint about this book was a character flaw (more so of the hero than the heroine) that he got past throughout the course of the book but of being sooo worried and caring so much about what other people thought of their choices. Like omg, be an adult already. But I did appreciate that this was something they grew past.

I loved seeing their atypical family form bonds and heal. I also really loved that at the end of the day, everyone really was trying to do the right thing and that all decisions, right or wrong, came from a place of love and good intentions.

You can absolutely read this as a standalone, but it is the second standalone in a series of standalones. I’ve read the first one Return to Us (Read my Review) and loved it so I would recommend starting there if you can just because they’re both great reads. And I’m already looking forward to the next in this series.

If you’re looking for an angsty, addictive romance with heart-warming feels, this is it!

Rating: 4.5 stars. Contemporary Adult Romance, can standalone.
