Lisa Ponti: Drawings 1993-2019

Ortuzar Projects, New York

April 6 – May 22, 2021

Lisa Ponti’s significant contribution to the art and culture in postwar Italy has long been overshadowed by the fame of her charismatic father, architect Gio Ponti, with whom she collaborated throughout her career. Ortuzar Projects is now putting a spotlight on her work with the presentation of about fifty drawings made at the height of Ponti’s career, from 1993 until 2018—shortly before her death at age 97. In some cases, the drawings double as poems or letters, and incorporate text into figurative designs, almost like calligraphy.

Matthew Brannon, best known for his expansive approach to printmaking, is presenting a series of vibrantly colored plane interiors. The unique silkscreen works are all forms of still lives, full of varied objects and carefully researched details. Brannon’s skill to translate artworks into rich stories is apparent throughout the exhibition, which reminds us of the bygone pleasures of travel and movement.

Hammer Museum, Los Angeles & Huntington Library, San Marino

April 17–August 1, 2021

The fifth edition of this acclaimed biennial presents works by 30 Los Angeles-based artists. There will be a versioning and a mirroring between the Hammer Museum and The Huntington Library, where each artist of the exhibition has a work in each venue, creating an uncanny sense of dĂŠjĂ  vu. The three main threads of this edition are entertainment, horror, and the theater-film convention of the fourth wall. Participating artists include Aria Dean, Buck Ellison, Kahlil Joseph, Nicola L., Mathias Poledna, Diane Severin Nguyen, Monica Majoli, and Sabrina Tarasoff, among others.

Martin Wong & Aaron Gilbert: 1981–2021

P.P.O.W., New York

April 2 – May 1, 2021

The latest exhibition at the Tribeca gallery P.P.O.W. juxtaposes the work of the Brooklyn-based artist Aaron Gilbert and the late Chinese American painter Martin Wong. This intergenerational dialogue focuses on two artists whose work chronicles a continuum of life within a city under siege. Their practices allude to the societal pressures of the New York communities they inhabit, as well as the turmoil of their private lives. Few artists match the nuanced poetry and symbolic density of Wong’s documentations of the constellation of social life during his lifetime. Much like Wong, Gilbert directs his lens to his home, neighborhood, and surrounding New York City community.

SIDEBAR OPENS IN THE HEART OF MUSIC CITY ON FRIDAY, APRIL 9, 2021

SAY HELLO TO SIDEBAR

Downtown Nashville’s latest cocktail lounge, Sidebar, opens in the heart of Music City on Friday, April 9, 2021. Housed within Bode on the corner of 2nd Ave and Korean Veterans Blvd, Sidebar is a self-dubbed “good time parlor” that plays host to refreshing spirits, curated light bites and weekly live music programming in a laidback, welcoming environment.

A NEW SIP IN TOWN

The beverage program at Sidebar includes a mix of well-known classics and seasonally inspired libations curated by beverage director and Nashville native, Meg Hoberg in collaboration with New School. The menu showcases creative offerings such as the Wallflower with gin, bergamot, jasmine, lemon, Angostura bitters, egg white and hibiscus tea; Romero with reposado tequila, lime, torched rosemary, cranberry and peppercorn; and the Maple Cherry Old Fashioned with bourbon, maple, spiced cherry and angostura. Tapping into the ultra-craft Nashville beverage scene, Sidebar’s menu also features an impressive collection of wine and beer – including its own custom draft, Sidebar Blonde, created in collaboration with East Nashville Brew Works.

A longtime Nashville resident, Hoberg brings authentic Southern charm and a passion for hospitality to her role at Sidebar. She has helped lead food and beverage programs at local hotspots across the city including Noelle, The Bobby Hotel and Westmont Hospitality Group. In her new role, Hoberg oversees menu development, bar management, f&b staffing and on-property events.

LIGHT BITES FOR LATE NIGHTS

Much like the ethos behind Bode, the menu at Sidebar was created to be shared amongst friends and offers an elaborate selection of Southern-inspired bites perfect for happy hours or late-night snacks. Menu highlights include the Southern Pulled Pork Sliders with pulled pork, slaw, brioche slider buns and barbeque sauce; Bavarian Soft Pretzel with a giant pretzel, house-made honey mustard and sea salt; and Barbecue Chicken Flatbread with grilled chicken, barbecue sauce, mozzarella, red onion and basil. Sidebar took to local artisans to create its iteration of the ultimate cocktail complement – the charcuterie board – which includes a selection of meats, cheeses, honeys, crackers, fruits and jams, available in both small or large portions.

OLD SPACE WITH A NEW FACE

Just steps from Lower Broadway, Sidebar takes inspiration from its humbled past as a carport within Bode, the former multi-unit housing complex turned boutique hotel. Utilizing a craftsman approach, the lively space boasts a warm palette of worn leather, industrial accents and dark-stained wood accompanied by a collection of vintage Americana trinkets and floor-to-ceiling windows that open to the sprawling outdoor courtyard. With entertainment at its core, Sidebar houses a versatile indoor performance stage with a regular schedule of live music programming.

LET’S CELEBRATE

To celebrate the grand opening, Sidebar is offering three promotions through May 31, 2021:

  • Guests with a valid Tennessee ID can enjoy half-off their first drink.
  • Guests who post a photo to Instagram and tag @bode.hotels and @sidebarnasvhille will receive a complimentary drink ticket.
  • Frontline workers can enjoy 15% off their bill when they show a valid form of ID.

Sidebar is open for delicious bites and beverages on Friday and Saturday evenings from 4-11 p.m. Keeping guests’ safety top of mind, Sidebar adheres to CDC-recommended COVID-19 protocols including mask wearing policies and social distancing.

For more information about Sidebar, visit bode.co or call 844.431.2633.

These $18 Slide Sandals Have 17,100 5-Star Amazon Reviews

0

Here’s what reviewers are saying:

“They sort of feel like the materials that Crocs are made of, and look just like the Birkenstock shoe of the same material, except with no name printed on the side.”

“I love that these sandals stay securely on while walking (even in sand) and the molded foot bed has arch support.”

“The non-marking sole, ergonomic foot-bed, and super light weight makes these the perfect house shoe.”

“I got this shoe with almost no expectations… just to wear in the shower at the yoga studio. Much to my surprise they quickly became the shoe I wore TO yoga and then AFTER yoga. Next thing you know this is my favorite shoe for going for walks, bike riding and running errands, working in the studio…”

“I don’t know why I bought Birkenstocks before!! These are way better and doesn’t cost as much. It’s light and cute! Runs a bit large tho. I wear EU size 37, so it’s 6.5 or 7 in the US. I got these in size 6 and fits perfectly. So it’s about 0.5-1 size smaller. Very happy with the purchase. I’ll get different colors.”

THE LOVE INTEREST by KAYLEY LORING

0

‘Although you and I have different backstories, I guess I’ve been resisting the possibility of a first love in the same way that you’ve been resisting the possibility of a second.’

Kayley Loring has done it again! We love, love, love her stories! And we LOVE, LOVE, LOVED this book! What’s not to love in The Love Interest? Our reading tastes were certainly sated with this book.  Let’s see, there was:

Student/teacher
Age Gap
Loveable heroine
Grouchy gorgeous hero
Humour
Emotion
Sizzling chemistry
Forbidden love
Fabulous secondary characters
3 stories in one (you’ll understand when you read the book)
A story that made us grin with delight from ear to ear.

‘Even years from now, I doubt that I’ll be able to string a bunch of words together to describe how good it feels to be kissed by him like this.’

We always look forward to a new book by Kayley Loring because she never disappoints.  She injects just enough drama to make our hearts flip flop, whilst having us in fits of riotous laughter, and her ability to perfectly push and pull our emotions with the vulnerability of her characters really hits our hearts.

‘Here is a young woman with a cautious heart, and I feel connected to it somehow. Not the woman, but the cautious heart. There’s an unspoken, involuntary camaraderie between the broken-hearted.’

35-year-old Emmett Ford is a NYT bestselling author of the hugely successful action thriller series Jack Irons, with his books already turned into a movie franchise with Ryan Gosling playing the macho protagonist Jack Irons. Yes, Emmett has it all, but love is something he avoids. Following the death of his fiancée over ten years ago, Emmett promised himself he’d never fall in love and risk that sort of heartache ever again. One thing Emmett does need is inspiration – his character Jack Irons, needs to find love.

‘My protagonist needs a woman. I don’t need a woman. I need inspiration.’

25-year-old Fiona Walker has moved from California to New York to further her writing career and hopefully finish the historical romance she’s currently writing. Fiona needs inspiration too. Since landing in New York her man pickings have been slim, so the inspiration for her character William Dexter has dried up. Fiona has never known the love of a man, Emmett has loved and lost – they may be different, but in other ways, so similar.

‘Prologues before bros. That’s my motto.’

Two authors meet in a diner. A cliché? Maybe, but that’s how it went down, and that’s where all the flirty fun begins, not only that but Fiona (and Emmett) are going to get the shock of their lives when Emmett turns out to be a substitute professor in Fiona’s creative writing class.

‘I would ruin my life and everyone else’s for this woman right now.’

This book is hot, flirty, sweet, and swoony fun. You don’t want to miss this one! We didn’t want it to end! We loved Fiona and Emmett and their madcap friends and family. The dual POV’s were beautifully in sync, and watching Fiona bring out the romantic in the gruff Emmett, made our hearts flutter. She may seem scatty, but she’s every bit as sharp as Emmett. The way Kayley Loring delivers her humour is comedic timing at its best – she’s hilarious! We would’ve loved a little more time with Emmett and Fiona and a little less with their characters, but that’s a small gripe in what was a fantastic read. The epilogue both bewildered and delighted us and giggling like crazy ha-ha!

Call the Midwife TV show on BBC and PBS: seasons 12 and 13 renewal

(BBC)

Call the Midwife has received another early renewal. BBC has renewed the long-running period drama series for seasons 12 and 13, keeping the show on the air until 2024. Season 10 debuts in the UK this Sunday night and season 11 will begin filming soon.

In the United States, the Call the Midwife show airs on PBS. A 10th season premiere date hasn’t been announced yet. Word is that a fall premiere is likely but an official date hasn’t been released.

Created by Heidi Thomas, Call the Midwife revolves around a group of nurse midwives working in the East End of London in the late 1950s and 1960s. The most recent Christmas special, which aired on Christmas 2020, stars Jenny Agutter, Linda Bassett, Judy Parfitt, Fenella Woolgar, Ella Bruccoleri, Helen George, Laura Main, Leonie Elliott, Stephen McGann, Cliff Parisi, Annabelle Apsion, Georgie Glen, Max Macmillan, Daniel Laurie, and Zephryn Taitte.

Here’s the renewal announcement:

BBC announces two further series of award-winning drama Call The Midwife

Two more series of multiple award-winning Call The Midwife have been commissioned for BBC One.

It’s an incredible privilege to be able to look back on a decade of Call The Midwife, and yet know that our journey is still very far from over. – Heidi Thomas

With series ten due to launch on Sunday 18 April at 8pm and series 11 about to commence filming, Call The Midwife will now be on air until 2024. Series 12 and 13, commissioned by Piers Wenger, Director of BBC Drama and Charlotte Moore, Chief Content Officer, will consist of two 8×60′ series and two Christmas specials.

Made by Neal Street Productions for BBC One and BBC iPlayer, Call The Midwife is celebrating its tenth anniversary series this year and continues to be one of Britain’s most popular and most watched drama series since it launched in 2012. The series attracts an enormous audience for BBC One, with its Christmas Specials achieving over 9 million viewers. Series nine was also the fourth biggest drama across all channels in 2020. The drama has won multiple awards across the decade for its depiction of challenging medical stories which are tackled by the nuns and midwives of Poplar.

Heidi Thomas, Creator, Writer and Executive Producer, says: “It’s an incredible privilege to be able to look back on a decade of Call The Midwife, and yet know that our journey is still very far from over. We are thrilled to be going on for a few more years! Like Nonnatus House itself, we have a proud past but an even more exciting future – full of old favourites, fresh faces, higher hemlines, new ideas. The stories we tell are like babies – they never stop coming, we love them all, and we vow to do our best by every single one.”

Pippa Harris, Executive Producer for Neal Street Productions, says: “We are all delighted by this vote of confidence from the BBC, and are looking forward to delivering more laughter, tears and babies for our loyal fans. Over the past ten years it has been an honour to see how warmly the show has been embraced by audiences around the world, thanks to the skilful writing of Heidi Thomas and the brilliant work of our cast and crew.”

Piers Wenger, Director of BBC Drama, says: “The enduring popularity of Call The Midwife is a testament to the extraordinary love and creativity from its creator Heidi Thomas and its producers Pippa Harris and Ann Tricklebank. We are delighted to have secured the future of Call The Midwife for two further series beyond those which are currently in production, and look forward to enjoying more adventures for the inhabitants of Nonnatus House for years to come.”

Series creator Heidi Thomas continues to lead the writing team and serve as Executive Producer alongside Pippa Harris and Ann Tricklebank. Executive Producer for the BBC is Mona Qureshi with Ann Tricklebank as Producer.

Call The Midwife returns this Sunday at 8pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

What do you think? Do you watch the Call Your Midwife TV series on PBS? Are you glad to hear that it’s been renewed for two more years?
