GEA Releases New Music Video, Adds a Touch of Industrial to Her Usual Ambient Vibe [Video]
Helsinki-based GEA has become known in recent years for the sweet, celestial sound of her voice and marrying traditional Nordic folk music and ambient electronica. It’s been a beautiful marriage of styles in her releases so far, garnering her recognition in a number of genres, including EDM. With her new single “The Truth Between the Lies,” there’s a new power behind her music as well as a new format.
Last year GEA released a number of singles, all of which were different from what fans may have come to know as her usual style. Ranging from fully instrumental and traditional to more EDM-based, these singles were the portends of “The Truth Between the Lies.” Easily her most obviously electronic track to date, it combines a vintage industrial beat and music arrangement that, with GEA’s operatic vocal range, sounds like if Kate Bush were to team up with Power Station or Duran Duran. The production and instrumentals are thanks to Canadian guitarist Chris Birkett and the collaboration really paid off both in terms of the music and in what GEA wanted to say with this song.
The lyrics for “The Truth Between the Lies” deviate a bit from GEA’s more organic, uplifting usual work still very esoteric in quality, the title pretty much says it all. Some might interpret it as being political but it’s more political in the sense of the “Cave of Shadows” story in Plato’s Republic than specifically targeting any modern politics. It’s about separating the lies of the physical world from the truth of the inner world and the work it can sometimes take to get there. The song is still uplifting in this way, as GEA empowers the listener by stating clearly that there’s another way to see the world.
And it all happened right in front of her eyes; You were invaded engaged in all those lies; And it all happens right in front of our eyes You can’t escape it: the truth between the lies.
For the video, which released on YouTube at the same time as the song, GEA teamed up with film team BYNEW and animator Raimi Nikkari to create a simple and smooth visual animation that looks sort of like stop motion with sand painting but with digital static. The video is somewhat abstract but follows the lyrics and sort of “Cave of Shadows” but in space vibe the musicians were going for. Watching it, the video brings the track to an even more heart-based place through its landscapes and very abstract concepts. The video is a great compliment for this song, where both musicians and videographers allow the audience to feel and interpret however they’d like.
It will be interesting to see where GEA goes with her next single, and if she will continue on this industrial/dream pop fusion path but longer. As she continues to stretch and grow her style, it seems this artist won’t be pinned down to one genre, but it doesn’t matter because her message and voice are so extraordinary. Needless to say, she’s still one to watch whether you’re into indie, EDM or folk music.
“The Truth Between the Lies” is out now on Fragity Records and is available to stream on Spotify. Check out GEA’s YouTube channel as well for more breathtaking videos.

Be sure to check out his newest and dynamite EP, “Leee EP.”
Who is Lee Burridge and what do you stand for?
A DJ who’s been playing music to people since 1983 and, for the last ten years, a truly passionate artist who has been focused on creating, developing and supporting melodic house music through my All Day I Dream events and label.
You’ve established yourself as a sonic traveler and mastered the harmony between soundscapes and landscapes. Describe the evolution of your sound from your humble beginnings in 90’s Hong Kong to igniting the desert floors at Burning Man today.
I’ve always been drawn to music that has an emotional thread to it and that took you on a journey. Back in HK in the 90s I was exploring how to create that kind of a journey by weaving together a lot of different drum intensities rather than the way I let the music flow now. I used to program the peaks and valleys on the dance floor by playing either faster or harder at certain times. I didn’t really find that to be very challenging eventually so began to approach it with a different mindset. Take for example a sunrise set at Burning Man. The musical vibe and/or melodic elements of the track rather than the groove (the groove is all important to me but to maintain flow) begin to build on each other. They slowly entice and entrance the listener on an emotional level. Each one building towards specific moments of release. Tie in the surroundings and the collective energy of the crowd and you truly become part of a magical and emotional intensity that, at times, has people crying. The crowd becomes so in tune with these emotive and beautiful feelings certain tracks emit that they can truly let go. It’s amazing to see the power music can have if you let it in. I feel truly grateful to have found a corner of dance music where I can express my honest feelings and emotions through my track selection. It’s total freedom to play in this honest way.
Was there a definitive turning point to your success? When did you realize the magnitude of your impact within the industry/community?
There have been a few key moments actually. The first was being handed a business card that led to my full time job as a DJ in Hong Kong in 1991. I was able to start to develop as an artist and begin to mature as a grown up person. After that, meeting Craig Richards and Sasha (on separate occasions) in HK and forging those friendships gave me the opportunity in 1997 to return to the UK and find a place for myself in the scene. We were all a part of a project called ‘Tyrant’ that really shone a spotlight on me as an emerging new artist in the UK. Global Underground came next. It was a fairly well respected mix CD series that opened a door globally for me. I’d say the balance of the Tyrant residency at Fabric with Craig (for six years) as the club itself flourished alongside the GU mixes allowed me to travel and play all sorts of locations globally and gave me credibility . After that things started to slow down for a few years as minimal techno took over. The scene I was considered to be a part of sort of fell apart but it gave me time to reflect and explore. After a while I found music I was passionate about and also saw certain things I considered were lacking in the dance music experience as a whole. I felt music with an emotive edge had disappeared. No one was playing a long set anymore so the whole ‘journey’ experience a DJ could take you on had been lost. There were so few girls attending events too which really didn’t feel right. I didn’t really notice it happening but as I’ve been doing this for quite a while I guess I’ve experienced and know quite a lot of things about my industry. I saw quite a lot of things I didn’t think were right so decided that instead of waiting for other people to make things happen for me that I would make it happen for myself and, eventually hopefully, other artists I believed in. This was when I started All Day I Dream. I made some mistakes but the concept and intention came from a pure place. I guess once I started seeing the impact the label and events had on people (artists and fans) and how many other events began to adopt the aesthetic and sound I was playing that it felt like something important had happened. I fully intended from day one to ’try’ to encourage others to play, make or dance to the music I believed in. I’ll always be proud that it’s grown in the way it has and that we are still out there exploring and pushing this vibe.
With all the inspiration you’ve gathered from different environments that you’ve encountered throughout your career, you were able to create a world of your own – All Day I Dream. Where/When did this concept first take form, what sparked it, and what has it grown into today?
Musically the tipping point moment for me was 2007. As I just mentioned I wasn’t really resonating with the minimal techno scene. I found myself trying to fit in but I wasn’t being authentic. I decided to search for music I really loved. I started discovering disparate releases from different smaller artists that felt like they had a thread between them. That being, their melodic elements or feeling. After a while I had enough music to play a set and make a mix. There really wasn’t enough new music to go out every week and play new tracks at these parties so I looked back into my collection for certain older tracks that also fitted the vibe I was trying to create. I made a mix called ‘All Day I Dream of Her’ that I gave to friends (all girls) who loved it a great deal. It was eventually released as my RA podcast. I started exploring the reaction to this music at bigger events such as Lightning in a Bottle festival. No one else was doing this that I knew of and, initially, I wasn’t sure how people would respond but the more I played this way the more people started being drawn to it. I played a few sets at Burning Man too (the big sounds out there at that point were dubstep and electro house) and it seemed to really resonate with the place itself and actually felt magical. You could see the joy it brought out of people. On July 4th 2010 I played in New York on a rooftop. The roof itself was amazing but the production I felt was lacking. There were speakers, equipment and a bar and an amazing view of Manhattan. That was it. The party was great after the sun went down but before that it was intensely hot and uncomfortable. It was super industrial due to the stark warehouse roof space . I thought about that event a lot in the coming months and decided that I wanted to do my own event there but approach it differently. A year later I held the very first ADID events on the same roof but created a colourful and more artistic aesthetic. No one was really putting money into producing events in this way. Everyone was cutting corners and trying to make a few dollars more. I decided to invest. I rented a D&B sound system that was way too expensive (i felt as the music was detailed and had feeling that you needed to hear and feel it fully) and myself and two friends who helped create the first events started integrating organic elements such as flowers and bamboo as well as bright coloured material that moved with the wind. I’d seen certain art pieces at Burning Man where the contrast of colour with the neutral surroundings made things pop. Bushwick is a pretty industrial area and I thought integrating color and warm textures would help create an atmosphere. Add in the emotional musical journey and an amazing crowd and this was the first step forward for ADID. I never wanted to force the growth of the party so over the years allowed it to grow through word of mouth. I fully believe in the experience which is why today we still have a lot of the same people who were there at the beginning coming to the events around the world. The parties have got bigger but the feeling is the same. It’s a community and everyone who’s there is as important to make it feel the way it does as we are. I’m blessed that it’s popularity has reached so many different places in the world yet everywhere we go the feeling is that same beautiful vibe we’ve had since day one.
“Set and Setting” – What does this phrase signify to you?
It means something very different to me now than it did in the 90s when it involved acid and Thailand haha. These days I relate it to what kind of musical journey I’d create depending on the location I was playing. What set I’d play in what setting.
Despite the curses 2020 brought to the collective masses, what was the biggest lesson you gained and how are you planning to propel your career forward in 2021?
It made me realise I was missing out on other really important quality of life experiences that going at a million miles an hour doesn’t allow you to have. Career wise in 2021 I feel we will all still have a way to go and to try to be patient and not expect a great deal to return to the way it was pre-covid. Not yet. All Day I Dream will continue to explore other ways to share the music with our existing fans as well as hopefully attracting new ones. We are lucky to have the radio show on Sirius FM as well as the weekly streams online every Sunday. I’m not sure we will be ‘propelling’ anywhere soon but are definitely preparing to come out the other side of this monumental and difficult human experience with a beautiful landing pad for people. Like in the 1920’s after the Spanish flu people are going to want to be with each other and also going to want to have fun again. We are ready to bring happiness into people’s lives with our community.
Is there anything on the horizon that you can share with us?
An app like Bumble or Tinder called ‘All Date I Dream”…ok, that’s a joke
What do you wish for the future of electronic music? In what ways would you like to see it evolve?
I think it’s important to encourage people to continue to explore and support new and emerging artists. I’d like to see more of the ingrained and successful artists support that talent rather than use it to bolster their own careers.

The Unstoppable Appeal of Lasagna in New York City

Vic’s lasagna.

According to a Harris Poll, 68 percent of Americans felt stressed out in the weeks leading up to the presidential election, and on that day, many took steps to combat their anxiety. Some went for long walks. Some practiced deep-breathing exercises. Some went offline. Some threw their phones in the river. And Hillary Sterling, chef-partner at Vic’s restaurant in Noho, made a lasagna. It was the first lasagna that Sterling, who’s known for her pasta, had ever tackled as a professional chef. These days, she spends mornings alone in the kitchen with her pasta-production guy, and on November 3, they needed a project — preferably a labor-intensive, time-consuming one — to take their minds off the possibility of a second Trump term. So besciamella, Bolognese, tomato sauce, and yards of fresh pasta sheets it was. And it worked. The repetitive motion of spreading ragù across noodle seemed to calm them. Several hours later, they hoisted the first batch out of the oven: a judiciously sauced, crunchy-topped, 13-layer knockout that would make Garfield plotz. Now lasagna is a permanent part of Vic’s menu rotation and also, presumably, of Sterling’s stress-reduction regimen.
Of course, the great thing about lasagna is that after it exerts its therapeutic effect upon the producer, it casts a similarly soothing — if soporific — spell on the consumer. We’re not breaking any news when we note that in tough times and cold weather, lasagna sells. Generally speaking, anything with multiple layers — a turkey club, a tortilla española, a mille-feuille, a stack of pancakes — has a distinct advantage over its vertically challenged cohorts in terms of mouthfeel and eye appeal. But in this comfort-food arena, lasagna stands alone. Sandwiches and pasta are two of the greatest comfort foods ever invented, and lasagna is essentially a pasta sandwich.
What is new about the current state of lasagna is that it’s everywhere, even in restaurants that previously wouldn’t have bothered with it. And chefs who have always bothered with it are busy perfecting it. You almost can’t afford not to put it on your menu because, in this time of takeout, it’s a no-brainer: It travels well. It reheats like a dream. You can even sell it from your restaurant’s makeshift general store.
This is what the Franks (Castronovo and Falcinelli) of Frankies 457 Spuntino are doing with their version, a new addition to the menu (kitchen logistics had left them lasagnaless for 15 years, until the pandemic forced them to shift all production to the roomier wine-bar quarters next door). You might have expected Rezdôra, the Flatiron District specialist in the cuisine of Emilia-Romagna, birthplace of lasagna Bolognese, to serve it, but until COVID-19 struck, it never did. Weeks into lockdown, though, the restaurant began prepping it as a heat-and-eat dish for two — survivalist rations for discriminating pastavores. Lasagna maestra Rita Sodi of I Sodi in the West Village brainstormed a new cacio-e-pepe lasagna to add to her repertoire. In Jersey City, at Bread and Salt bakery, online pre-orders for Rick Easton’s one-off pre-Lenten take-and-bake lasagna di carnevale (pork ragù, tiny meatballs, ricotta, and fresh mozzarella) sold out in about twenty minutes. And uptown, at the Leopard at des Artistes, chef Jordan Frosolone has had time to finesse the Sicilian-flavored recipe he’s been working on for years. Now it’s his best seller.
The dish’s universal appeal isn’t lost on New York’s scrappy chefs. Jonathan Benno of Benno and Leonelli restaurants never thought much of the stuff while growing up in Connecticut, but a revelatory meal at the Martha’s Vineyard inn then run by Hearth chef Marco Canora’s Tuscany-born mother, Laura Sbrana, showed him how special the dish could be. He has been making his own renditions ever since and now sells them in hot, cold, and (occasionally) black-truffle permutations on practically every food-delivery platform out there. As for Canora, the pandemic has driven him back into the lasagna business. Thirteen years ago, the chef served an amazing lasagna verde (dubbed the city’s best by this magazine) at his late midtown restaurant Insieme. The only problem with it was that it was too popular. Seventy percent of Insieme’s customers ordered the dish, and it became the bane of the kitchen. Never again about sums up Canora’s sentiment regarding baked pasta at the time. Recently, though, he decided to reprise this super-lasagna, but as a frozen heat-and-serve item on Hearth’s takeout menu. In times like these, nothing can ever be too popular. Here’s a look at some of the latest and greatest lasagna developments around town.

Hillary Sterling presses her debut lasagna with a weight overnight to keep its 13 layers intact and well defined. Another trade secret: There’s fonduta (the same stupendous stuff that comes with her signature crispy-onions appetizer) in the besciamella.
$39; 27 E. 20th St.

Much as you’d expect from a student of Emilia-Romagnan traditions, Stefano Secchi’s lasagna is a classic down to the besciamella, the Parmigiano, and the ragù Bolognese. Available hot and ready to eat or packaged to bake at home.
$22; 457 Court St., Carroll Gardens

Born of practicality and built from ingredients the kitchen already had in-house, Frankies’ first lasagna (vegetarian or topped with short-rib Bolognese) has been a hit out of the gate: “It was like, ‘We should have done this forever,’ ” says partner Frank Castronov.
$34 for a family-size heat-and-eat pan; 403 E. 12th St.

For starchy-food aficionados, the pandemic-driven return of the lasagna Marco Canora made over a decade ago at the erstwhile Insieme is the baked-pasta equivalent of Michael Jordan coming out of retirement in 1995.

Perhaps the only lasagna inspired by Instagram cinnamon-roll food porn, Don Angie’s rolled brainchild has sausage in the Bolognese, tomato sauce on the bottom, and robiola dollops on top. Although the dish has been on the restaurant’s menu from day one, it took a pandemic to make it available to go: Since June, it’s been the centerpiece of Don Angie at Home’s three-course dinner for two.
$25; 105 Christopher St.

For 12 years, the choice was plain: meat or artichoke. Then last fall, Rita Sodi wondered, “What would happen if you crossed lasagna with cacio e pepe?” The answer: a lush but orderly stack of 21 silky layers, fused with besciamella and a sauce concocted from Pecorino stock.
$18; 7 E. 27th St.

After fiddling around with ring molds when he was at Lincoln — “What a nightmare!” — Jonathan Benno evolved his ultrarefined prep to a no-nonsense gratin dish for Leonelli. Now, “all the love” (i.e., ragù simmering, spinach-pasta rolling) happens a day or two before he makes it.
$29; 1 W. 67th St.

A trip to Enna, Sicily, and a taste of its Piacentinu Ennese, a black-peppercorned, saffron-laced Pecorino, inspired Jordan Frosolone to whip up this hearty belt-loosener. Between the sheets: pork ragù, Parmigiano, and fonduta made from the sheep’s-milk cheese.
