On My Block TV show on Netflix: season four renewal

(Netflix)

Netflix is getting ready to say goodbye to Cesar, Ruby, Monse, and Jamal. The streaming service has renewed the On My Block drama series for a fourth and final season of 10 episodes (two more than season three).

On My Block stars Sierra Capri, Jason Genao, Brett Gray, Diego Tinoco, Jessica Marie Garcia, and Julio Macias. From creators Lauren Iungerich, Eddie Gonzalez, and Jeremy Haft, this coming-of-age series centers on four teen friends — Cesar Diaz (Tinoco), Ruby Martinez (Genao), Monse Finnie (Capri), and Jamal Turner (Gray). They’re bright, streetwise high school kids, in Los Angeles’ South Central neighborhood. Throughout the journey, they lean on each other, but also find their friendship tried and tested. In season three, they thought life was about to return to what passes for normal in Freeridge. Instead, the stakes get even higher for the quartet of friends.

The third season of On My Block was released on Netflix in March 2020. This renewal announcement took a while but, according to Netflix, “We’ve got unfinished business in Freeridge.” Production resumes in March.

There’s no word yet on when the final episodes of On My Block will be released. Here’s the fourth season teaser:

What do you think? Do you like the On My Block TV series? Will you be watching the fourth and final season? Are you sorry to hear that the show is ending?

Armie Hammer Steps Down From Paramount+ Limited Series The Offer

Armie Hammer steps down from Paramount+ limited series The Offer

Just two weeks after departing the Jennifer Lopez-co-led action rom-com due to his ongoing social media controversy regarding sexually scandalous allegedly from the Golden Globe nominee, Armie Hammer is now also stepping down from the lead role in Paramount+’s making-of-The-Godfather limited series The Offer, according to Variety.

The series, written and executive produced by Oscar and Emmy nominee Michael Tolkin (Escape at Dannemora, The Player), will be based on Oscar and Golden Globe-winning producer Albert S. Ruddy’s never-before-revealed experiences in making the iconic 1972 film adaptation of the crime epic The Godfather, which was directed by Francis Ford Coppola and adapted by he and source material author Mario Puzo. Hammer was set to star in the series as the 90-year-old producer, whose other credits include The Longest Yard, which he also developed the story for, The Cannonball Run and Million Dollar Baby, but now a search is underway for a new lead star.

The 10-episode limited series will be penned and executive produced by Tolkin alongside Ruddy, Nikki Toscano (Hunters, Bates Motel) and Leslie Greif (Walker Texas Ranger, Hatfields & McCoys) and produced by Paramount TV Studios.

The Offer was one of a number of projects Hammer has signed on to after October saw the Golden Globe nominee join both the espionage thriller The Billion Dollar Spy, in which he will star alongside Mads Mikkelsen (Fantastic Beasts 3), and Lionsgate’s romantic action comedy Shotgun Wedding, in which he would star alongside Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers, Marry Me), but following the social media controversy he stepped down from the latter with his status in the former currently unknown.

New Artist Profile: Anni Pohto Merges Electronica and Indie Pop, Creating a Musical ‘Closure’ for Herself

19

Swedish singer and songwriter Anni Pohto is hardly a new artist in the strict sense of the word, but she’s new to Your EDm and we’re glad to have found her. Having already released two EPs and a number of singles since 2014. Her style normally walking the line between pop, ambient indie electronica and indie rock, her new album seems as though it will hold a few surprises. The forthcoming The Rising, due out this summer seems from the first two singles “Deep” and “Closure” offer a stripped down version of her usual EDM-infused style.

It’s not to say that the whole album will be stripped down or completely bereft of beats, but the first two examples do see Pohto focusing on melodics vocals and, of course, her wonderful storytelling ability. “Deep” released November of 2020 and sees the electronic elements that are normally prevalent in her music very stripped down, indeed, but they’re still there. As her silky voice and the analog piano wind around each other, a minimal hip hop-style beat pushes the song forward as the lyrics tell an all-too-familiar tale about the dangers of allowing hate and anger to push us forward and the desire, if not yet the ability, to release it all.

The video for “Deep” is simple but stark, following a bare-faced Pohto as she wrestles with her dark and light spots, represented as actual black and white clothing. The struggle between flow and power, yin and yang plays out on the screen as the song tells the story of that struggle we all know too well.

“Closure” released shortly after “Deep” in December and it has even more surprises. Containing a beautiful accompaniment from Pohto’s flawless piano playing and the kantele, a stringed instrument that is the national instrument of Finland, the singer stretches her vocal range as if she’s stretching to reach the closure she seeks. Along with the ambient sound design and barely audible synths, the effect of this song is truly goosebump-inducing.

A lyric video for “Closure” was posted this week on that’s set up like a text conversation between what seem to be two ex lovers. The lyrics are written out as pending messages as the two have a much more cordial conversation. It’s and incredibly creative way to do a lyric video and the way the texts are run make it just as interesting as a flashier video. The struggle Pohto is going through between wanting to say her true feelings and the instinct not to ruffle feathers is played out in black and white, in all its awkward and painful glory. It’s just as visceral and relatable as any big-budget artsy video.

So, suffice it to say, whether you love Anni Potho’s earlier stuff with more electronica baked in or not, this album’s going to be a good one. If the raw creativity of these two tracks is anything to go by, Pohto will more than satisfy her current fans and likely gain many new ones along the way.

“Deep” and “Closure” can be streamed along with the rest of Pohto’s discography on Spotify. For more videos, check out her YouTube channel.

PUNTA-TACO!

12

A latin american tinged theme where the bassline infers a Milonga rhythmn. This track have many names before the final one (some of them were Cuba Libre, Afro-cuban or Fudel los Castro – this last one is of impossible english translation, but is enough to say that it’s message means something like “Fuck the Castros “). Punta-taco is an automobile maneuver in which the pilot steps over 2 pedals at the same time, the brake and the accelerator. In this track the drummer Didi uses 2 pedals simultaneously in his kit: one for the bass drum and the other for the cowbell clave.

Prim-n-Poppin Reimagines Vintage Beauty Ads for Today

12

Ava Trilling and Coral Johnson-McDaniel.

Nostalgia is always in style. From television show reboots to magazine revivals, everything makes a comeback. Now it’s time for the vintage beauty ads of yesteryear to get their makeover. In a new photo series titled Prim-n-Poppin, photographer Julia Comita and makeup artist Brenna Drury reimagine old-school ’70s and ’80s cosmetic ads by featuring LGBTQ+ and POC models. Advertisement spreads that once only featured predominately cisgender, thin, and white models are now fully upgraded with models of a variety of racial backgrounds and identities including queer, transgender, and non-binary, as well as talent from the body-modification, vitiligo, and body-positive communities. The resulting images are an inclusive and modern reinterpretation of the monotonous ads of the past.

Jesi Taylor Cruz.

“Julia and I asked ourselves, ‘what would the future look like today if these advertisements had been the standard?’” says Drury of the project. “As creatives, we want to challenge the industry to take responsibility for their marketing and diversify their talent pool.” As you peruse through the Prim-n-Poppin site, you’ll find interviews with each featured model about what this project means to them. One of the models, Cory Walker, says: “[Older beauty advertisements] made me feel invisible in a lot of ways. I had to imagine what it would look like if heteronormative beauty standards weren’t so primarily highlighted. It’s a beautiful healing mess when you go from being a kid who never sees a reflection of themselves to dreaming up better than what currently exists. I feel energized when I see a good beauty ad, because I’m like, ‘I can give that and also take it further and bring more identities and levels of beauty along with me. The new vanguard, really.’”

The site also features a list of beauty brands, modeling agencies, and beauty education groups that promote diversity and inclusivity. Drury and Comita have plans to expand the photo series with more models of all ages, gender expressions, body shapes and more. But for now, we’ll relish the sight of the new vanguard.

Local Miami Chef Wins Food Network’s Supermarket Stakeout!

16

Local Miami chef, Abel Veulens, just took home a BIG WIN for his hometown. The beloved executive chef at Miami’s famed Mediterranean hotspot, Byblos Miami, is the newest champion of Food Network’s Supermarket Stakeout, a spirited three-round chef competition held in a California supermarket parking lot.

Chef Abel proudly won over the judges during all three frenetic rounds against three other top chefs and claimed the $10,000 grand prize on the hour-long premiere that aired at 10:00 PM yesterday, January 26th, on the Food Network.

“You may have seen me at Byblos before,” says Chef Abel Veulens, Executive Chef, Byblos Miami. “Well now you can see me on the Food Network’s Supermarket Stakeout, so honorably given the opportunity to represent our brand back home!”

In Supermarket Stakeout, hosted by frequent Chopped judge and an Iron Chef, Alex Guarnaschelli, four chefs square off in a competitive pop-up kitchen outside a grocery store. Assigned a theme for each round, the chefs must size up shoppers as they exit the store and attempt to negotiate for their grocery bags. During Chef Abel’s episode (Season 3, Episode 4), Alex Guarnaschelli threw a parking lot themed party, and Chef Abel, along with three other top chefs, had to rustle up ingredients from supermarket shoppers to create perfect party snacks, followed by a hearty breakfast dish, and then it was a mad dash to the finish as the chefs prepared dueling decadent desserts for a date with destiny
 and the $10,000 grand prize.

“It was honestly such a crazy time for me. During these times of uncertainty in the business, it’s a real blessing to be able to have such a strong and genuine family at the restaurant, that sticks together and provides each other with a true support system through these tough months,” says Chef Abel Veulens, Executive Chef, Byblos Miami. “To be given the chance to go to L.A. to compete with other really amazing chefs, and be able to bring some money home for my family, it’s a genuine blessing.”
