Born Victoria Leigh Blum in 1955, Tanya Roberts grew up in New York City and Toronto, and prior to acting was a fashion model. It was after she got married that she started to pursue performing, and she made her big screen debut in a 1975 horror film titled Forced Entry. In 1981 she joined the cast of Charlie’s Angels in its fifth and final season, replacing star Shelley Hack and winning a role that was sought by thousands of actresses. Winning that part quickly led to more significant feature roles including 1982’s The Beastmaster (which featured her as the female lead, Kira), and 1984’s Sheena â in which she starred as the titular queen of the jungle. She additionally appeared in episodes of 1980s television staples The Love Boat and Fantasy Island.
Gerry Marsden, leader of the Merseybeat quartet Gerry & the Pacemakers, has died. Marsdenâs friend Pete Priceâa broadcaster based in Liverpoolâbroke the news on social media earlier today (January 3), stating that Marsden died following a short illness stemming from a heart infection. Marsdenâs death was subsequently confirmed by the BBC. He was 78 years old.
Marsden formed Gerry & the Pacemakers in Liverpool in the late 1950s, though they first performed as the Mars-Bars. In addition to lead vocals and guitar, Marsden wrote a fair amount of the Pacemakersâ material, including singles like 1963âs âIâm the Oneâ and 1964âs âDonât Let the Sun Catch You Crying.â The original lineup included Gerryâs brother Fred Marsden on drums, Les Chadwick on bass, and Arthur Mack on piano. In 1961, Les McGuire replaced Mack.
In 1962, the Pacemakers became the second band to be signed by Brian Epstein, following the Beatles. Their studio debut, 1963âs How Do You Like It?, was recorded under the direction of George Martin.
Despite their success in the UK charts, as well as a number of singles on the Billboard Hot 100, the Pacemakers disbanded in 1966.
Marsden reformed the Pacemakers in the early 1970s, though his brother Fred did not join back in. The group went on a 30th Anniversary tour in 1993. That same year, Marsden co-authored his autobiography Iâll Never Walk Alone with Ray Coleman. Parts of the book were later adapted into the musical Ferry Cross the Mersey.
Marsden released a handful of solo singles, as well as an album of John Lennon and Paul McCartney covers, following the Pacemakersâ early iteration. McCartney paid tribute to Marsden on social media following the news of his death. âGerry was a mate from our early days in Liverpool. He and his group were our biggest rivals on the local scene,â he wrote. âMy sympathies go to his wife Pauline and family. See ya, Gerry. Iâll always remember you with a smile.â
Later in life, he worked as a cabaret performer and childrenâs television entertainer. In 2003, Marsden was made an MBE for services to charity. His brother and fellow Pacemaker Fred died in 2006. The Pacemakersâ 1963 version of Rodgers and Hammersteinâs âYouâll Never Walk Aloneâ remains the football terrace anthem for Marsdenâs hometown club in Liverpool, who posted a tribute to the late singer on Twitter. âIt is with such great sadness that we hear of Gerry Marsdenâs passing,â Liverpool FC wrote. âGerryâs words will live on forever with us.â

After news of Gerry Marsdenâs death broke on Sunday, Paul McCartney took to Twitter to pay tribute to the Gerry and the Pacemakers frontman.
âGerry was a mate from our early days in Liverpool. He and his group were our biggest rivals on the local scene. His unforgettable performances of Youâll Never Walk Alone and Ferry Cross the Mersey remain in many peopleâs hearts as reminders of a joyful time in British musicâŚâ he wrote alongside a backstage photo from the Beatles tour with Gerry and the Pacemakers and Roy Orbison in 1963. âMy sympathies go to his wife Pauline and family. See ya, Gerry. Iâll always remember you with a smile.â
See his thoughtful post below.
My sympathies go to his wife Pauline and family. See ya, Gerry. Iâll always remember you with a smile. â Paul
Marsden passed away this morning at the age of 78 after battling a heart infection. He formed the Pacemakers in 1959, and the Liverpool band became the second signed to the Beatlesâ manager Brian Epstein. They released their debut single âHow Do You Do It?â in March 1963, which soared to the top of the charts; however, their best-known song is a cover.
A few months after releasing their No. 1 single, the Pacemakers released a rendition of âYouâll Never Walk Alone,â originally from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein 1945 musical Carousel. The song ended up becoming Liverpool football clubâs anthem, and Lana Del Rey recently recorded an a cappella version of it to accompany an upcoming documentary about the soccer team.
The Pacemakers originally disbanded in 1967, but five years later Marsden revived the band with a new lineup and continued to perform until he retired in 2018. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Pauline, and two daughters: Yvette and Victoria.

Arriving for a meal at Morandi, Keith McNallyâs 13-year-old trattoria on Waverly Place in the West Village, almost always began the same way: âCiao!â For regulars, the exclamation bellowed by the restaurantâs general manager and head maĂŽtre dâ, Roberto â always âRoberto,â with no need for gratuitous formalities like last names â was typically followed by a question about how a spouse or kids or parents were doing. Many times, it included a welcome embrace. âWe shared many big hugs,â says Andy Cohen, one of Morandiâs many neighborhood regulars. As a regular myself, I heard many of these âCiaos!â over the years, always happy, familiar in all the right ways. It certainly never crossed my mind that, when Roberto greeted me during what would be my last pre-pandemic meal at Morandi, in January, the exuberant ciao would also mean good-bye.
This summer, while Morandi was still closed to diners due to the pandemic, Roberto moved back to his native Italy without the chance to offer a final ciaoto his guests and friends. âI am crestfallen to have not been able to give him a big hug good-bye,â says Cohen. âRoberto always made me feel like I was at home â always warm with a big welcome, even when he was packed to the rafters and I showed up unannounced.â
Robertoâs fans also include Sarah Jessica Parker, Cohenâs West Village neighbor and a frequent Morandi date. âRoberto was the portrait of hospitality,â Parker says. âHis devotion to his guests is not effort, but a natural-born gift. I loved his wild gesticulation, helping him convey enthusiasm, affection, and his love for his job. He greeted every customer as if they were the only guests he hoped to see.â
As a non-celebrity, I can vouch for Parkerâs sentiment that Roberto choseto treat every customer, not just the famous ones, as next of kin. My husband and I got married at Morandi in 2019, about a decade after I first started dining there, and every aunt, uncle, cousin, friend, or childhood neighbor who has spoken about the event since manages to mention Roberto and some random encounter that he somehow made unforgettable. McNally, known for his untiring eye for detail, tells me it was this natural charisma that led him to bet on Roberto from the very beginning: âI first met Roberto a month before Morandi opened in 2007. He was applying for a job as floor manager, but because I was swept off my feet by his phenomenal charisma, he left the meeting as my working partner and head maĂŽtre dâ.â
The year before my husband and I got married, we took a trip to the Amalfi Coast. Before we left, Roberto taught us the phrase that came to define our trip: Ciao ragazzi, which roughly translates to âhi, boys.â (But when pronounced, as Roberto taught us, heavy on the âga,â itâs more like âhi, boyyys.â) These sorts of tips, always freely given, were something else Roberto shared with his chosen family of patrons, according to Parker: âI vividly recall telling him about a trip we were hoping to take to Italy and asking if he had thoughts about where we should visit and, of course, where we should eat. He shared delightful stories of his hometown and all the places he loved we should be certain not to miss. Before we left, he offered a detailed, handwritten list, in exquisite script which I still keep in hopes of fulfilling.â
As Roberto tells it, his last day at Morandi, in the early days of the pandemic, was more or less like any other. He didnât yet know the events to come would lead him and his wife, who is also Italian, to return to their home country before the restaurant reopened, and he says that was probably for the best. âI remember closing the place on Sunday, March 16 â that day we were on the phone deciding what to do, and then Monday was the official shutdown,â Roberto told me on a phone call from Milan, where he now lives. âIn a way, this spared me from actually saying good-bye, something that would have been traumatic and brought me much more pain and stress.â He added that any formal good-byehe would have given would have been more of a âciao for now,â regardless. âIâd be lying if I said New York still isnât on my radar. I am giving myself a couple of years,â he says. âIâm never afraid to get on a plane and move back across the ocean.â
