Mona Chalabiâs Guide to Counting All the Rats in New York City

Top, Skirt, Bracelets, and Shoes by Prada. Earrings and Rings Monaâs Own.
As a journalist, Mona Chalabiâs job is to find truth in numbers. As an artist, her mission is to make that truth easier to digest. The London native, who currently works as the U.S. data editor at The Guardian, has built a following by turning sobering statistics, such as the disparity in womenâs pay or the steady increase in rent costs, into appealing, hand-drawn illustrations. This year, Chalabi has trained her pen on the COVID-19 crisis and racial inequality, poring over charts and datasets, and sharing findings on her popular Instagram account. Here, she turns her attention to a mischief of long-tailed Manhattanites.
âââ
1. Open a search window in your browser. Type in ârat data new york.â
2. One of your first results will be a link to NYC Open Data. You need to make sure itâs a reliable source, so open the âAboutâ page in a new tab. Hmm, cool. This site is managed by three different departments within local government. Close the tab. Now, letâs get back to ratty business.
3. Make e sure this is a good dataset by asking a few basic questions. How was it compiled? Every time someone makes a 311 call about government services, the information gets logged, and this is a database of every time a caller mentioned a rat sighting. (Pros: Itâs a pretty accessible resource. Cons: If you donât trust the local government, perhaps because you live in a neglected neighborhood, maybe you donât call 311.) Is it recent? (Uh-huh. It gets updated daily.) Is it historical? (Yep! It goes all the way back to Jan 1, 2010.)
4. Download that bad boy. Hit the âexportâ button up top and choose CSV. That means âcomma separated value,â which basically means this data should be easy for you to peruse in Excel.
5. Start to look around the spreadsheet. What do you see? Each row includes the type of building and the address of where the rodent appeared. It even provides the exact coordinates of the sighting, which means that you can create a map of rat sightings and see if that correlates with things like trash collection.
6. Pick one question. Letâs see whatâs happened to the rat population since the start of the year. To do that, you need to highlight the date column, then filter it to just show 2020. Copy and paste the column into a new tab. Now highlight it, click on Data > Pivot Table > Okay. Drag the words âCreated Dateâ to both âRow Labelsâ and âValues.â Now click on one of those dates (any date!) and click Group > Group selected items > Month. Now you should see this:
7. Wow, rat populations have really increased since April. But wait! Before you go jumping to any conclusions, letâs see if this is a seasonal thing. Repeat step 6, but without filtering for just one year. Now we see what the data has looked like for the past decade. And you can clearly see that rat sightings are more common in the summer months.
8. Try to find out why. Search for the terms ârat population summerâ and discover how rats get horny as the heat rises, and so more climate change means more rats. Great.
9. If you have time, turn the rat data into an illustration for your friends and family to enjoy > to terrify them!

The Ending Of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Explained
The Ending Of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Explained
As with every Tarantino film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is rich with storytelling depth and meaning, especially as the film reaches its climax. Now that the movie’s out, it’s time to dig deep into the ending.
Let’s get the biggest development of the ending out of the way: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a movie in which the Manson family murders didn’t happen the way they did in real life. It’s clear from Cliff’s visit to the Spahn Movie Ranch that Charles Manson’s commune is up to something devious, but when it comes time to commit the infamous murders on Cielo Drive on the night of August 8th, historical fact gives way to fiction. One drug-fueled decision to change plans and try to murder Rick Dalton creates a ripple effect. Sharon Tate and her friends survive that night, and three key members of Manson’s family do not.
Though the film ends before it can explore the full extent of this ripple effect, it’s safe to assume that the black cloud created by the Manson murders in 1969 was changed in a number of key ways. Joan Didion famously wrote that the night Sharon Tate died was the night the 1960s ended. The decade was about to end anyway, but perhaps Rick and Cliff’s acts of self-defense were enough to keep the feeling of the 1960s alive in Hollywood for at least a little longer.
The last shot of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood shows us Rick, having torched Susan Atkins in his pool during the attack on his house, being invited up to Sharon Tate’s home for drinks. It’s the realization of a fantasy Rick has been nurturing ever since he figured out that the hottest director in town, Roman Polanski, and his rising star wife were his neighbors. To Rick, they’re the people who can get him into all the best Hollywood circles, the people who can resurrect his struggling career. Keep watching the video to see the ending of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood explained!
