Ex-Gang Member Wins Teacher Of The Year Award In Missouri | National

0

Darrion Cockrell says he didn’t utilize his education as a kid, but now it’s the center of his life.

Cockrell, who was recently named Missouri’s 2020 Teacher of the Year, became a member of a gang before he was 10 years old.

“We were just already in it because of our family,” he told Good Morning America earlier this month of his childhood. “I didn’t care about books. I had to go home and figure out what I was eating. I had to figure out if my lights were going to be on.”

Cockrell will serve as Missouri’s representative in the National Teacher of the Year program. He was honored during a virtual recognition event on Thursday, October 15, along with the other six finalists, semifinalists and regional teachers of the year, according to a press release from the Missouri Department of Elementary & Secondary Education. He also became the 51st recipient of the award, the release notes.

Cockrell is now a physical education teacher at Crestwood Elementary in St. Louis County’s Lindbergh School District. He says growing up, he had trouble finding a stable living situation and bounced between relatives and a foster center. Teachers became his biggest advocates, providing hope for the future.

“My counselor and principal and a few teachers actually went to court and fought for me to stay,” he told GMA of when he was about to be transferred to a boarding school for troubled youth after his grandmother lost custody of him. “My middle school teacher picked me up every day [at the foster center] and drove me to school. She pretty much was my mom for six months.”

In seventh grade, Cockrell’s football coach and his wife took him into their home, where he lived until graduating from high school. He would eventually earn a degree from University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Now, Cockrell is paying it forward as a phys-ed teacher. One parent reached out to him when her son was troubled by watching his friends bully another kid in middle school. Cockrell had previously spoken to the boy’s parents when he had behavior issues while in his class and taught him a powerful lesson.

“His mom reached out to me, and I couldn’t believe it, because we did not have the greatest relationship,” Cockrell told The St. Louis American. “But he realized that my disciplining him showed how much I cared about him, so he trusted me to help guide him and his friends. I was glad he showed empathy. That’s one of the words we use a lot: ‘empathy.’ So, I reached out to his principal, and his mom was extremely excited and happy that I was able to help and intervene.”

Lindbergh Superintendent Tony Lake told the St. Louis American that the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education chose Cockrell as their Teacher of the Year because “he has this ability to bring a smile to your face and connect with people and he does amazing things in that building and with his kids.”

“PE is just as important as social studies and science and math,” he told GMA. “As long as you understand those building blocks of fitness and health and taking care of yourself, then you can do anything you want in the world.”

Every Peter Jackson Movie, Including The Lord Of The Rings Films, Ranked

9. Meet The Feebles (1989)

In the intro, I mentioned that Jackson had two sides to his career, and Meet the Feebles is certainly on the other side. The best way to describe this movie is that it’s like The Muppets on LSD. It’s about some Henson-esque puppets trying to get their show on the air, but it’s full of sex, drug-use, and violence. It was The Happytime Murders before The Happytime Murders was a thing, but even better, if you ask me.

It’s all in the characters, as there are no live actors in this movie. Instead, you get a sex starved hippo, a rat in the porn industry, and a horny hedgehog. The only thing holding it back is some of the humor, which isn’t as effective as it wants to be. Still, for better or worse, there’s no other film like Meet the Feebles.

Rosie Perez's Hilarious 'Soul Train' Line Bet

6

There was a reason Rosie Perez made such an impression on “Soul Train”! When talking to Access Daily’s Kit Hoover and Scott Evans about her vibrant dance moves and facial expressions on the show, she revealed that exuberance was in part due to a bet with her friends! “When we saw the other dancers there, we were trying to fit in a little bit, so me and my college buddies had a bet to see who would do the most ridiculous thing going down the line.
It was an inside joke, and I didn’t understand how I was coming off on the camera!” she said. Rosie also shared her memories of flubbing a line in her “White Men Can’t Jump” scene with Alex Trebek and meeting Jennifer Lopez for the first time for “In Living Color.” Plus, she revealed how Kaley Cuoco convinced her to sign on to “The Flight Attendant,” despite her fear of traveling! “The Flight Attendant” is streaming now on HBO Max.

Snowman (Earthbound) Jazz Arrangement || luminousmusic (ft. David Martinez)

1

The winter season and holidays are approaching, so here is Snowman! What makes this song wintery, you might ask? Well for one, the title is literally “Snowman”.

“Snowman” from “Earthbound” composed by Hirokazu Tanaka
Arranged by Elijah Brown (luminousmusic)
Featuring David Martinez:

Sheet Music –
More Mother/Earthbound Music –

I have never played or done any research on games from the Mother/Earthbound series, so I can’t really explain what makes this tune significant in the game itself, but regardless, it’s still a bop! Went for another simple approach for this arrangement, avoiding complexity to make it more pleasing emotionally. With the simple chord structure of this tune (it is fairly similar to the tune “Little Sunflower” by Freddie Hubbard!), I decided to go with a nice Afro-Cuban groove, which was very fitting, changing styles from a jazz waltz to some compound meter! And of course, this couldn’t have been complete without my good friend David’s French horn playing!

I experimented quite a bit with some of the instruments here. If you notice in the sheet music (provided above) the score only shows what looks to be a jazz quintet, however I felt like the track needed a bit more for the feel I was going for. I soon added bass clarinet, which I had started learning about a month ago, ukulele, and some extra percussion bits. I also tried to incorporate more phrasing in the piano and bass while comping. Different chord voicings and fills really have a big impact on making the tune sound more interesting as a whole! I am currently studying jazz piano at a conservatory in my area, and teaching myself electric bass, so I think this is a good step forward in improving my playing skills on these instruments!

Well that’s all for now. Stay tuned though, as I have something huge on the way for Christmas!

Eddie Van Halen Cremated 3 Weeks After His Death: Report

0

Eddie Van Halen has been cremated, according to TMZ, who obtained a record of the death certificate.

The ashes of the Van Halen co-founder, who died at age 65 following a battle with throat cancer on Oct. 6, went to his son Wolfgang. Per the outlet, Eddie’s wishes were to have his ashes scattered in the ocean off Malibu, the coastal Southern California town where he lived.

Wolfgang, 29, was Van Halen’s youngest member. The band, whose final lineup also consisted of Eddie’s brother Alex Van Halen and David Lee Roth, officially broke up when Eddie died. Wolfgang now performs with the band Mammoth WVH.

Eddie died with his wife Janie Liszewski by his side. The two tied the knot in 2009. Wolfgang, who is the son of Eddie and his first wife, actress Valerie Bertinelli, confirmed the news of his father’s death on Instagram.

“I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning,” Wolfgang shared with his followers at the time. “He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss. I love you so much, Pop.”

It was in 1961 that the first John le Carre novel was published – specifically Call For The Dead, which was the book that introduced the author’s most famous character: George Smiley. Ultimately the book was one of 10 novels about Smiley that le Carre got published – the most recent being A Legacy of Spies, which hit bookstores in 2017. Most of his career was spent writing fiction, primarily in the spy genre, but he also penned multiple short stories and multiple non-fiction books, including the autobiographical titles The Naive And Sentimental Lover and A Perfect Spy.
