Quentin Tarantino’s latest film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, where it got a “six-minute standing ovation.” Here’s the story behind Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Quentin Tarantino has said that all his movies are very personal, and in 2019 he described Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as, quote, “probably [his] most personal” film. The year in which it’s set, 1969, holds special significance. He explained to Esquire:
“I think of it like my memory piece. Alfonso [Cuarón] had Roma and Mexico City, 1970. I had L. A. and 1969. This is me. This is the year that formed me. I was six years old then. This is my world. And this is my love letter to L.A.”
Tarantino also explained how his childhood affected his filmmaking in an interview with the Telegraph:
“As a child, my mom took me to the movies all the time. It was cheaper than getting a babysitter.”
He watched violent, R-rated films like Deliverance, which co-starred Burt Reynolds, who was cast in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood before he passed away.
Vintage News noted that the movie’s title is also biographically relevant. It alludes to Once Upon a Time in the West and Once Upon a Time in America, films directed by Sergio Leone, who had a huge impact on Tarantino.

Deaton told Variety, “We knew we could not do a Zoom show; we could not do a living room show. We could not do that and have it represent the CMAs, which is ‘country music’s biggest night.’ It had to be representative of the brand. The other thing, the idea had to be adaptable.”
“All along we knew we were going to try looking at having a small audience,” he said. “But we didn’t know: Do we put super fans in there. Do we test our board and put them in there? I called Sarah one day and said, ‘If we look at our main categories, it’s about 50 nominees or so. We could do our nominees, plus one. So that became the plan.'”
Deaton emphasized that “there were no stones unturned” in how they implemented their safety protocols. He said that to him, “It’s kind of like the bubble for the NBA, or how the NFL is going out and playing football every week; they’re not just going out on the field with no rules and regulations.”
“Because I was in Zone A and talking directly to the talent, even though I was being tested every other day, I had a mask on and a face shield at all times,” he said. “There was a lot of protocol in place. It cost a lot of money to do that, as well, to make sure that that is done right… probably one of the safest places in the world to be was at our show.”

Even though Spider-Man 3 wasn’t among the long-list of Marvel projects that were given new updates during yesterday’s Disney’s Investors Day, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige did confirmed that, just like WandaVision, the third Tom Holland-led Spider-Man film will indeed connect to the events of Sam Raimi’s upcoming Doctor Strange sequel.
In addition, Feige has revealed that the production has already begun on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in London, describing the highly-anticipated project as “a thrilling, scary, and minding-bending adventure.” After previous fan speculations, he has also finally revealed that The Baby-Sitters Club actress Xochitl Gomez will indeed take on the role of fan-favorite Marvel hero America Chavez, marking the character’s live-action film debut.

Cumberbatch will next be reprising his role as Dr. Stephen Strange in the Tom Holland-led Spider-Man 3 in addition to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The sequel is being described as the first horror film in the MCU with Oscar nominee Benedict Cumberbatch returning as the titular sorcerer supreme and Elizabeth Olsen also appearing as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. According to Kevin Feige, the upcoming Disney+ shows WandaVision and Loki will both directly impact the events the Doctor Strange sequel.
Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch appeared in Avengers: Endgame, where they were both last seen attending Tony Stark’s funeral. Loki also appeared in Endgame and was last seen after the events of the Avengers’ first battle in New York, where he escapes with the Tesseract cube.
Originally set to be directed by Scott Derrickson, the sequel will now be helm by Spider-Man‘s Sam Raimi with Loki head writer Michael Waldron set to rewrite the script that was first written by The Turning scribe Jade Bartlett. Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Benedict Wong will be reprising their roles, with Rachel McAdams recently confirmed to make her return as Dr. Christine Palmer.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hit theaters on March 25, 2022.

The first Doctor Strange movie was released in 2016 with Benedict Cumberbatch starring in the titular role. Joining him in the film were Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, and Michael Stuhlbarg as Nicodemus West. It also featured the MCU debut of critical characters from the pages of Marvel Comics, including Benedict Wong as Wong, plus Mads Mikkelsen as villain Kaecilius, and Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One (who is of Celtic origin in the film instead of East Asian origin). Doctor Strange was directed by Scott Derrickson, whose previous credits were primarily horror films like The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister, and Deliver Us from Evil.
