Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Once Diagnosed With Prostate Cancer, He Says In Op-Ed

0

NBA Legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar revealed that he has had a prostate cancer diagnosis, along with leukemia and heart surgery in an op-ed about health challenges facing Black people.

In the article for the online health magazine WebMd, Abdul-Jabbar wrote about the increased risks carried by Blacks for heart disease, diabetes and cancer. He said that he has been fortunate to be able to navigate those challenges, but that others in the community cannot and it puts them at greater risk.

“So far, in keeping with these statistical risks, I’ve had prostate cancer, leukemia, and heart bypass surgery,” he wrote. “…I’ve been fortunate because my celebrity has brought me enough financial security to receive excellent medical attention. But while I’m grateful for my advantages, I’m acutely aware that many others in the Black community do not have the same options and that it is my responsibility to join with those fighting to change that. Because Black lives are at risk. Serious risk.”

Abdul-Jabbar, 73, the iconic Los Angeles Laker, who is also the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, did not expound further on the diagnoses or his course of treatments, choosing rather to focus on how these healthcare disparities impact the Black community.

He segued to the Black Lives Matter movement  and the awareness it has brought about police violence in the country, but said that Black Americans are also threatened by a healthcare system that has left them with inadequate treatment, compromising their livelihoods.

“…The more insidious and damaging threat to the health, lives, and economic well-being of Black Americans is a health care system that ignores the fact that, though they are most in need of medical services, they actually receive the lowest level,” Abdul-Jabbar wrote. He then placed focus on the coronavirus pandemic and the health disparities it has revealed among Black people in America.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted just how malignant the system is. The virus has hit the African American community at a much higher and more devastating rate than it has the white community,” he outlined. “ At the same time, they receive a lower standard of care. The death rate for Blacks is 3.6 times higher than for whites.”

Abdul-Jabbar encouraged the public to support better healthcare outcomes for Black Americans.

“It’s as if the Black community is trapped in Groundhog Day in which every day we fight racism, prove it exists, see gains, and then wake up the next day to all the same obstacles. In the movie, Bill Murray escaped the cycle by becoming selfless, caring more about others’ needs than his greedy desires,” said Abdul-Jabbar. “That’s how America will escape this self-destructive behavior.

“The future of equity for Black Americans starts with physical and mental health, and as long as they are at the end of the line for services, true equity can’t happen. Black lives have to matter in every aspect of American society if they are to thrive,” he said.

How To Watch The After Movies On Streaming And What’s Coming Next For Tessa & Hardin

0

After We Collided Is Coming To Netflix

And coming up this month, After We Collided will be joining After on streaming as well. The second film hit theaters internationally back in September amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, but managed to do well for itself, reaching in the top 20 highest-grossing movies of 2020 globally with its $47.9 million haul. The second film follows Tessa as she scores a publishing internship and meets Dylan Sprouse’s Trevor, an awkward coworker of hers following a falling out with Hardin.

In After We Collided, Anna Todd got more involved in the writing process as a co-writer on the script, in addition to being an active producer as well. The movie is also directed by Roger Kumble, who famously helmed Cruel Intentions back in 1999. After We Collided is coming to Netflix on December 22. Have you considered using a VPN? You may already use one as a way to keep your internet access secure when using public wi-fi, but did you know you can use a VPN to watch your favorite streaming content when you’re traveling out of region? If you’re traveling out of the U.S. area and still want to catch the After movies on Netflix, consider using a VPN.

Yesterday, Subtronics and more than 20 of the most visionary and otherworldly new artists in bass music have come together to share Boot Camp. As the first compilation released by Subtronics’ own independent label, Cyclops Recordings, these songs represent a full spectrum of fresh, forward-thinking sounds, furthering the collective mission to “spread positive energy and unconditional kindness to everyone.”

They’ve generated hundreds of thousands of streams already, and the entire compilation is now available on all platforms.

To celebrate the release of Boot Camp, Subtronics began a run of three headlining drive-in shows at San Bernardino’s NOS Events Center last night. The Christmas Caroler Challenge: Season Two Ratings – canceled + renewed TV shows

0

The Christmas Caroler Challenge TV show on The CW: canceled or renewed for season 3?

(Š 2020 Associated Television International. All rights reserved.)

Though the ratings aren’t high, this holiday CW series also appears inexpensive to produce. Will it stick around long enough to become a holiday tradition? Will The Christmas Caroler Challenge be cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned.

The Christmas Caroler Challenge is hosted by Dean Cain and Laura McKenzie. Performance groups are judged by Garry Beers, Brandon Rogers, and Mikalah Gordon. In the show, a dozen extraordinary Christmas caroling groups — each with their own stylized brand of performance — perform and celebrate the great Christmas music that we’ve all come to love. Viewers meet these groups from elaborate ultra-traditional virtuoso performances to those with unexpected twists on the classic Christmas carols.

The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.

Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.

For comparisons: Season one of The Christmas Caroler Challenge on The CW averaged a 0.10 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 498,000 viewers.

Note: These are the final national numbers (unless noted with an “*”). These are different from the fast affiliate numbers which are just estimates of the actual ratings. The final nationals are typically released within 24 hours of the programming or, in the case of weekends and holidays, a couple days later.

What do you think? Do you like The Christmas Caroler Challenge TV series on The CW? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a third season?
