“Mank” Reviewed David Fincher’s Impassioned Dive Into Hollywood Politics

The best thing about David Fincher’s new film, “Mank,” is that it isn’t about what one expects it to be about. More specifically, the movie (which is streaming on Netflix) is not about the assertion, made most strenuously by Pauline Kael in her controversial New Yorker piece “Raising Kane,” that Herman J. Mankiewicz, the veteran screenwriter, wrote the screenplay for “Citizen Kane” by himself and nearly had credit stolen from him by Orson Welles, the movie’s director, producer, star, and credited co-writer. Yes, that saga (which I revisited recently) is included in the film, but it is downplayed to the point of insignificance and near incomprehensibility. Rather, “Mank” is about why Mankiewicz wrote “Citizen Kane”—what experiences inspired him to write it and were essential to it, and why he was the only person who could have done so. The movie is not a “gotcha” movie, not a parroting of Kael’s argument, but, rather, an astutely probing and pain-filled work of speculative historical psychology—and a vision of Hollywood politics that shines a fervent plus ça change spotlight on current events. It is a film that left me with a peculiar impression—especially when I viewed it a second time, after brushing up on Mankiewicz’s story—that it is, in some ways, an inert cinematic object, lacking a dramatic spark. But its subject is fascinating, and its view of classic Hollywood is so personal, and passionately conflicted, that what takes place onscreen feels secondary to what it reveals of Fincher’s own directorial psychology—of his view of the business and the art of movies, and of his place in both. Like “Citizen Kane,” “Mank” is a movie built with flashbacks. Its present tense is 1940, when Mank (I’ll call the character Mank, as the film does, to distinguish him from the real-life person)—played by Gary Oldman—is deposited at a house (along with a huge clandestine stash of liquor) in a ranch compound in Victorville, California, about sixty miles from Los Angeles. Mank has been in a car accident and severely broken his leg. He’s in a half-body cast, and will be doing his screenwriting from bed. There with him is Welles’s collaborator John Houseman (Sam Troughton), to bounce ideas off of; a British secretary named Rita Alexander (Lily Collins), to take dictation, type the script, and, as it turns out, to spur him onward with insightful queries and responses; a German nurse named Frieda (Monika Gossmann), to care for Mank’s injuries; and, very occasionally, Welles himself (Tom Burke), who calls and drops by to consult. The mainspring of the cycle of flashbacks is a round of dictation that Mank delivers to Rita: she recognizes that the subject of the script he is formulating is the newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst (played by Charles Dance), and her question to Mank—about the actress Marion Davies, Hearst’s (much younger) mistress—prompts a flashback to Mank’s first encounter with the mogul, in 1930.

Watch Taylor Swift’s Music Video for New Song “willow”

0

Taylor Swift has a new music video, and it’s just a small part of the best early Christmas present Swifties could ask for.

Less than five months after the surprise release of her eighth studio album folklore, the “August” singer dropped yet another musical bombshell with folklore‘s companion album evermore. The first single off evermore, “willow,” arrived with its very own music video, directed by Taylor herself. Check it out below.

The epic video premiered at 9 p.m. PT on Thursday, Dec. 10, the same time that the album was released. The mystical footage features a love story as Taylor dives into a river after seeing an unexpected reflection, participates in a sort of bonfire-type ritual and eventually ends up using a glowing thread to share a special final moment with her guy.

The male lead in the video is played by Taeok Lee, who has previously danced with Taylor on tour. Shortly after the video premiered, he posted an image from it to Instagram. “Surprise guys!” he wrote. “Thanks Tay for bringing me back again for this project.”

Shortly after the video debuted, Taylor tweeted that she appreciates the bond she continues to enjoy with her fans. “I have no idea what will come next,” she posted. “I have no idea about a lot of things these days and so I’ve clung to the one thing that keeps me connected to you all. That thing always has and always will be music.”

As fans were waiting for the video to begin, the Grammy winner answered fan questions on her YouTube page. “I wanted evermore to represent fall & winter while folklore represents spring & summer,” she replied to one fan. “I’ve always wanted to do a 2part anthology that’s a collective body of work & it just kind of happened naturally.”

Anda, Ven Y Muévete – Los Van Van (50 Aniversario) CD – Mi Songo (2020) @DJ YASEL

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: FXX Comedy Renewed for Four Years, Through Season 18 – canceled + renewed TV shows

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia TV show on FXX: renewed for seasons 15, 16, 17, and 18

(Photo: Patrick McElhenney/FXX)

The dysfunctional quartet of friends will continue to be just as irreverent as ever, for at least four more seasons. In May, FXX renewed It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia for a 15th season. Today, it was announced that the comedy show had been renewed for seasons 16, 17, and 18 as well. This will conceivably keep it on the air into 2024

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia stars Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Kaitlin Olson, and Danny DeVito. The show revolves around five underachieving and dysfunctional friends who run Paddy’s Pub in South Philadelphia — Ronald “Mac” McDonald (McElhenney), Charlie Kelly (Day), Dennis Reynolds (Howerton), Dee Reynolds (Olson), and Frank Reynolds (DeVito). In season 14 of the sitcom, Mac learned a new language, Charlie did a period piece, Dennis attempted a one-act play, Dee cut her hair, and Frank performed a death scene.

Season 15 will make Sunny the longest-running live-action comedy series in US television history. The show will surpass The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, which ran for 14 seasons on ABC from 1952 until 1966. It’s worth noting, however, that Ozzie and Harriet’s run generated 435 episodes while Sunny’s made just 154 installments thus far.

Will the Philly gang eventually surpass the episode tally as well? At the current rate of 10 episodes a year, we’re looking at season 43. That seems unlikely but few would have thought this irreverent sitcom would have lasted this long.

Here’s the press release:

“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” Renewed for Four More Seasons

Seasons 15 Through 18 Will Propel Sunny Into the Record Books as the Longest-Running Live-Action Comedy Series in Television History

More Than 1.5 Billion Hours Viewed Since Sunny’s Series Premiere in 2005

Season 15 Scheduled to Air in 2021 on FXX and the Next Day on FX on Hulu

LOS ANGELES, December 10, 2020 – It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been renewed for four additional seasons, it was announced today by John Landgraf, Chairman, FX Entertainment and FX Productions. With season 15 due next year, Sunny will set the record as the longest-running live-action comedy series in television history, bypassing The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet. Sunny’s remarkable run has also racked up more than 1.5 billion hours viewed since its premiere in 2005.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia follows the misguided dreams and blundered schemes of everyone’s favorite bar owners – The Gang at Paddy’s Pub – Mac (Rob McElhenney), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Charlie (Charlie Day), Dee (Kaitlin Olson) and Frank (Danny DeVito).

“The pitch for Sunny came into FX within the first few weeks of my joining the company in 2004,” said Landgraf. “I was 42 and Rob McElhenney was 27. Rob McElhenney is now 43 and, strangely, I’m now 44 – but I’m still at FX and he (with his original partners) is still running Sunny and will be for at least 4 more seasons. That kind of thing just does not happen in live action TV.”

Sunny creator Rob McElhenney noted, “When we first pitched Sunny, we saw it as a 36-season arc. We are so excited to be halfway there.”

“We have absolutely cherished our partnership with Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howertown and Charlie Day,” added Nick Grad, President, Original Programming, FX Entertainment. “It’s extraordinary how with each new season they and their collaborators Kaitlin Olson and Danny DeVito continue to make episodes that stand with the show’s very best and most classic. We’re happy the forecast will remain Sunny for years to come.”

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia was created by Rob McElhenney, who also serves as executive producer along with Glenn Howerton, Charlie Day, Michael Rotenberg and Nick Frenkel. The show is produced by FX Productions.

What do you think? Do you enjoy the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia TV show on FXX? Are you glad that it’s been renewed so far into the future?
