President-elect Joe Biden has reportedly selected retired General Lloyd Austin to serve as his Secretary of Defense, according to NBC News.
If confirmed, the decorated military leader would be the first Black person to lead the Pentagon. Austin was also the first Black general to command an Army division in combat and the first to oversee an entire theater of operations.
Biden penned an essay in The Atlanticon Tuesday (Dec. 8) explaining his decision to choose Austin for the position. He said what helped him is witnessing Austinâs actions in Iraq in 2010 and 2011 in bringing troops out of the theater.
âHe played a crucial role in bringing 150,000 American troops home from the theater of war,â Biden wrote. âPulling that off took more than just the skill and strategy of a seasoned soldier. It required Austin to practice diplomacy, building relationships with our Iraqi counterparts and with our partners in the region. He served as a statesman, representing our country with honor and dignity and always, above all, looking out for his people.
âToday, I ask Lloyd Austin to once more take on a mission for the United States of Americaâthis time as the secretary-designate of the Department of Defense. I know he will do an outstanding job.

In 2016, Austin retired after running the U.S. Central Command. He emerged as a top-tier candidate over the past few weeks after Biden had received growing pressure from the Congressional Black Caucus to nominate an African American to be Secretary of Defense in Bidenâs new cabinet.
“General Austin is a southerner, has impeccable credentials given his military career and would be an outstanding secretary for the department,â Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson, a CBC member who is close to Biden, told POLITICO on Monday (December 7).
Austinâs appointment would add even more precedent to the history-making diversity already in Bidenâs White House staff and tapped cabinet. People of color and women are more represented in the president-electâs soon-to-be administration. In September, Bidenâs campaign announced 46 percent of its full-time staff and 40 percent of its senior staff were people of color. Women made up a greater share of Biden’s campaign, totaling 59 percent.
But no, the latest Chris Pratt karate-related news has nothing to do with Parks and Recreation. The Jurassic World star has instead signed on to lead and produce a comedy called The Black Belt. In the movie, Pratt will play an âunorthodoxâ uncle to a teen boy who is determined to become an expert in karate.

Mutant snakes survived a terrorist attack on a government laboratory, and they now threaten the town of Santa Mira Springs, California. Seismic activity has brought snakes to the surface, where residents are being bitten. Victims can transmit the virus to healthy persons. The military puts the town under quarantine. Local physicians try to control the epidemic, while the military is primarily concerned with keeping the virus a secret.

According to the local authorities, at least three suspects fled the scene in a beige car toward the A50 motorway. Law enforcement also revealed that one person “suffered injuries.” However, they didn’t identify or specify who. It’s unknown at this time who they’ve arrested.
A week later, Nikkie opened up the experience in a detailed YouTube video, in which she described the incident as one of her “worst nightmares.”

Exclusive: Paul Scheer talks Marvel hopes & The League future
Ever since his breakout work as part of the beloved comedy troupe Human Giant, Paul Scheer has literally been the man about town, appearing in everything from FX/FXXâs The League to Piranha 3D and while chatting with the comedian for his work in the upcoming crime thriller, Archenemy, ComingSoon.net explored Scheerâs hopes for his future with Marvel and a possible reunion of the fantasy football comedy.

For fans of the powerhouse comic book studio and those with a Disney+ account, Scheerâs appearance in the streaming platformâs docuseries Marvelâs 616 proved to be a pleasant surprise, especially for those who know of his past with Marvel as both a writer on multiple issues of Guardians Team-Up and Deadpool Bi-Annual #1, among others, and appearing as a fictionalized version of himself in The Astonishing Ant-Man #4.
With his episode, in which he starred and directed, focusing on a look back through the forgotten characters of Marvel and his compiling of a pitch for a TV series based on Simon Furmanâs Brute Force, but Scheer didnât take this research lightly and revealed he his desire to work with the studio one day, be it for his envisioned adaptation or another project.
âI love Marvel, I just do, Iâm a fan and I love what theyâre able to do in really letting directors put their stamp on things,â Scheer warmly related. âFor me it would be a dream to work with them, whether it be Brute Force or something else, I donât know how quickly Marvel is going to be jumping into animated anything, they seem like theyâre reinventing their entire plan right now of how they want to do their television. So, for me, Iâm happy to wait, but to do anything in that Marvel universe would be a blast.â

Following its conclusion in 2015 on the Fox-owned cable network, talks have occasionally surfaced from the stars and creators of The League about a possible revival or reunion in the future and though Scheer confirms he and the rest of the cast are certainly more than ready to return, he warns that fans should expect to wait longer for the right reasons.
âWe definitely talked about it in this time, especially during this COVID time as people are reuniting for fundraisers and things like that,â Scheer explained. âWe really wanted to make sure that we did it the right way, you know, we canât really do a live reading because the show was improvised, we want to figure out what we could do. Thereâs an element to the way people are Zooming that we thought would be an interesting thing. The way that I say it is this, âDonât count on it, but donât count it out either.â We want to come together, we will come together, I donât know when we will have that happen, I think we have to find the right way to do it, because whenever you do come back you want to make sure that it feels like itâs giving everything that people want. As a fan, itâs something that Iâm very aware of, you donât want to just do something thatâs slapdash and rather us all get on Zoom and shoot the shit. If weâre going to do something thatâs real or like a movie for Netflix, then weâre going to make sure we do it the right way.â
