Classic Horror Movie Has Never Looked Better

0

While Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein has brought the iconic scientist and his creature back into the public consciousness, there’s been a ton of worthwhile adaptations of Mary Shelley’s book over the years. One of the best films is 1957’s The Curse of Frankenstein, which is now available on 4K from Warner Archive. Hammer Films’ dark film starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee is well worth revisiting and receives a deluxe release.

“Driven by obsession and defying the laws of nature, Baron Victor Frankenstein dares to reanimate the dead, creating not just life, but a monstrous force beyond his control. As his experiments spiral into madness, Frankenstein must confront the consequences of playing God in a world unprepared for the horrors he unleashes. A milestone in cinema, The Curse of Frankenstein launched Hammer’s iconic Gothic horror cycle and redefined the genre with shocking colour, psychological intensity, and unforgettable performances. This new 4K UHD Deluxe Collector’s Edition boasts a new 4K HDR restoration from Hammer Films in association with the Warner Archive Collection. The film is presented in 3 different aspect ratios, and is accompanied by hours and hours of new special features,” says the official description.

What’s most interesting about The Curse of Frankenstein as a film is that it focuses mainly on Victor Frankenstein. Sure, he gets around to creating a monster (who doesn’t emerge until much later in the movie), but it’s mainly about Frankenstein’s quest for knowledge and his obsession with the idea of life. Wonderfully played by Peter Cushing, Frankenstein is the real monster as he eventually uses his creature (played by Christopher Lee!) for murder. It’s a bleak retelling of a classic tale, and it helps this adaptation feel fresh despite the many stabs at it.

As usual, Warner Archive has done a wonderful job on The Curse of Frankenstein 4K release. First off, there are three separate versions of the movie (the UK theatrical 1.66:1, a 1.37:1 open matte release, and the 1.85:1 US theatrical) across the two 4K discs. The picture quality is wonderful, with the film’s shadows looking great and HDR10 making the colors really pop (the blood on Frankenstein’s creature looks particularly great). The audio quality is also great, as there’s a DTS-HD 2.0 mono mix that is faithful to the original, while a new 5.1 surround sound mix has been created that works well. There are a ton of options at the viewers’ disposal, and that’s an incredible thing to see.

The three-disc set features two 4K discs and an additional Blu-ray disc that is purely bonus features. There’s a staggering amount of bonus features with four commentary tracks (featuring a wide range of film historians), plus a wonderful tribute to Cushing, a look at the restoration, an in-depth look at the film’s makeup, plus documentaries on everything from screenwriter Jimmy Sangster to the film’s legacy and how the film was made. There’s more than four hours of content here outside of the commentaries, so you’re really getting a full history of the film.

The Curse of Frankenstein 4K Review: Final Verdict

Filled to the brim with different options and great bonus features, The Curse of Frankenstein 4K release is a must-own for horror movie fans. Not only is the 1957 film a classic that left a mark on horror movies going forward, but it’s also fun to revisit (especially with this many versions and commentary tracks). This is Warner Archive’s most in-depth and best 4K release yet.

Brian Eno, Neneh Cherry, and More Unite for Palestine Benefit Single

0

Together for Palestine, the humanitarian operation that put on a massive benefit concert in September, has announced a benefit single featuring Brian Eno, Neneh Cherry, and many more. “Lullaby,” a version of the traditional Palestinian song “Yamma Mweel El Hawa,” will be released on December 12, with designs on the coveted UK Christmas No. 1 slot. Others in the ensemble include Nadine Shah, Mabel, Celeste, and Bastille’s Dan Smith. Peter Gabriel wrote an English-language lyric for the cover, and the Palestinian musician Nai Barghouti arranged and recomposed the song alongside Shards’ Kieran Brunt.

Eno said in a press release, “After a year defined by unimaginable loss, grief and injustice, we want to end with an act of love for Palestine’s children. Lullaby reflects their beauty, their longing and their hope. If we rally together and download it, we have a real shot at landing Christmas No. 1—and turning that moment into vital life-saving support for Gaza’s families.”

Barghouti adds, “This lullaby from our Palestinian musical heritage has been with me since early childhood. Today, it returns at a much-needed time as a reminder of what Palestinians will never lose: hope, defiance, beauty, and dignity.”

Kieran Brunt co-produced “Lullaby” alongside Benji B and Henri Davies. Also featured on the track are Amena, Lana Lubany, Leigh-Anne, London Community Gospel Choir, Sura Abdo, Tyson, Yasmeen Ayyashi, and Ysee. Together for Palestine’s T4P label will release the song, via distributor Empire. All proceeds go to Choose Love’s Together for Palestine Fund, which supports the Palestinian-led organisations Taawon, Palestine Children’s Relief Fund and Palestine Medical Relief Service.

In Los Angeles, meanwhile, another benefit concert, Artists for Aid, has been detailed ahead of its January 10 staging. Organized for the second year by Mustafa, the concert will feature Geese, Blood Orange, Alex G, Clairo, Faye Webster, Noname, Ravyn Lenae, Daniel Cesar, and more, with hosts Bella Hadid and Pedro Pascal.

A new batch of artists has also signed up to geoblock their music from streaming in Israel. My Bloody Valentine, Saba, Shygirl, YHWH Nailgun, and Denzel Curry are among the additions to No Music for Genocide.

New TMNT Live-Action Movie Announced But There’s Bad News

0

A new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) movie appears to be in development.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are a media franchise that was originally created by comic book artists Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. It follows four heroes in a half-shell — Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo — as they protect New York City from evil forces, with their biggest antagonist being the villainous Shredder.

There have been numerous TMNT movies, shows, comics, video games, and more over the years, with one of the most recent notable outings being the 2023 animated film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. A sequel to that movie is in the works.

What is the new TMNT update?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, producer Neal H. Moritz is now in talks to launch a brand-new live-action TMNT movie franchise for Paramount Pictures.

“The move occurs as the Skydance-owned studio is taking a magnifying glass to its slate and existing IP,” the article notes. “As opposed to some other titles, namely Transformers or G.I. Joe, Paramount fully owns the TMNT brand, having picked it up from co-creator Peter Laird in 2009, and it is seeking to fully unlock its potential.”

This will not replace Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2, as that movie is currently dated for September 17, 2027. It is worth noting, however, that the Mutant Mayhem spin-off show, Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, was recently cancelled after two seasons.

This will be the first live-action TMNT movie since 2016’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, which was not a big hit at the box office.

A live-action/CG animation hybrid TMNT project based on the popular The Last Ronin comic series was also previously reported to be in development. The Hollywood Reporter’s article states that said project has “been put back in the pizza box” at this time.

“That project was being developed as an R-rated feature, and had Nobody filmmaker Ilya Naishuller in talks to direct, but the new regime wasn’t keen on having the first non-animated movie in 10 years be a bloody, adult-skewing story,” the article reads. “One insider says the studio wants to leave the door open to possibly revisit it down the road.”

Major Labels Sign Licensing Deals With AI Music Company Klay

0

Warner Music Group (WMG), Universal Music Group (UMG), and Sony Music Entertainment (SME) have signed new licensing deals with artificial intelligence (AI) music technology company Klay Vision Inc., making it the first AI music startup to land licensing deals with all three major record companies and their publishing companies. A press release claims Klay will “help further evolve music experiences for fans, leveraging the potential of AI, while fully respecting the rights of artists, songwriters, and rightsholders.”

Klay uses its interactive tool Large Music Model, which is trained solely on licensed music, to “reimagine listening.” The company states that Klay “is not a prompt-based meme generation engine,” but rather a “new subscription product that will uplift great artists and celebrate their craft.” Klay prides itself on working with the music industry to enhance human creativity instead of trying to replace it. The company hopes to include independent labels, artists, publishers, and songwriters next.

In a press release, multiple parties involved in the deal shared their own statements, including Warner Music Group’s executive vice president and chief digital officer, Carletta Higginson: “Our goal is always to support and elevate the creativity of our artists and songwriters, while fiercely protecting their rights and works. From day one, Klay has taken the right approach to the rapidly-evolving AI universe by creating a holistic platform that both expands artistic possibilities and preserves the value of music. We appreciate the Klay team’s work in advancing this technology and guiding these important agreements.”

Universal Music Group’s executive vice president, Michael Nash, shared a similar sentiment last year when his company began a partnership with Klay. “We are excited to partner with entrepreneurs like the team leading Klay, to explore new opportunities and ethical solutions for artists and the wider music ecosystem, advancing generative AI technology in ways that are both respectful of copyright and have the potential to profoundly impact human creativity,” he said. “UMG has always endeavored to lead the music industry in driving innovation, embracing new technologies and supporting entrepreneurship while protecting human artistry.”

Klayfounder and chief executive Ary Attie added, “Technology is shaped by the people behind it and the people who use it. At Klay, from the beginning, we set out to earn the trust of the artists and songwriters whose work makes all of this possible. We will continue to operate with those values, bringing together a growing community to reimagine how music can be shared, enjoyed, and valued. Our goal is simple: to help people experience more of the music they love, in ways that were never possible before—while helping create new value for artists and songwriters. Music is human at its core. Its future must be too.”

Last month, UMG and Udio, an AI developer focused on music, reached an agreement in their 2024 copyright infringement lawsuit, which UMG, SME, WMG, and the Recording Industry Association of America brought against Udio and Suno. At the time, UMG accused Udio of copyright infringement on an “almost unimaginable scale” and training its AI models on the label’s recordings. After lengthy back and forth, UMG and the two companies decided instead to “collaborate on an innovative, new commercial music creation, consumption, and streaming experience.”

Lyrics:

Ever felt so ugly, pretending that he loves me
Sometimes it’s just not money never had to afford me
Now I’m sick and tired of you just taking right off
Knowing I’d forgive you

You ain’t here for dinner
Like I’m a beginner,
I loved you for your inner, inner, inner
And the next guy is out there somewhere,
But you won’t dare ’cause you’re too scared

Have you ever needed someone so bad
But he ain’t willing to make it last?
Sometimes you gotta lose to win again.
If it makes you cry, cry, cry
And all you do is fight
Can’t get no sleep at night
Sometimes you gotta lose to win again.

Impossible Star Now Streaming for Free

0

Phantom Punch, the 2008 sports biopic starring Ving Rhames, is now available to watch in its entirety completely for free.

The movie was released in theaters in 2008, and was directed by Robert Townsend. Alongside Rhames, Phantom Punch also stars Stacey Dash, Nicholas Turturro, Alan van Sprang, David Proval, and Bridgette Wilson.

The film’s script was written by Ryan Combs, and follows the story of boxer Sonny Liston. The film’s name, specifically, is a reference to the iconic punch from Muhammad Ali that sent Liston to the ground in their second fight.

How can you watch Ving Rhames’ boxing movie for free?

Phantom Punch is available in its entirety courtesy of Shout! Factory, who released the movie for free on YouTube. Check it out below:

“Ex-convict Sonny Liston (Ving Rhames) becomes the world heavyweight boxing champion in 1962, but his personal life is marred by run-ins with organized crime and the law,” reads the film’s official synopsis.

Phantom Punch is just one of Rhames’ many memorable roles. The legendary actor has appeared in countless high-profile productions, including Jacob’s Ladder, The People Under the Stairs, Pulp Fiction, the Mission: Impossible film series, Con Air, 2004’s Dawn of the Dead, Lilo & Stitch, and more.

The film holds no official score on review sites like Rotten Tomatoes, but has been rated by fans. Currently, the film has a 41% audience score with over 100 ratings on the site. Many of the reviews praise Rhames, despite the overall mixed reaction to the movie.
