Zola Jesus Covers Armenian Folk Song “Krunk”: Listen

0

Zola Jesus has shared a cover of the Armenian folk song “Krunk.” Proceeds from the Bandcamp exclusive single will go toward the Armenia Fund, which provides humanitarian aid during the ongoing conflict with Azerbaijan. Listen to “Krunk” below.

“I first heard the song ‘Krunk’ (Crane) while listening to a collection of songs sung by Lousine Zakarian, a renowned Armenian soprano,” Zola Jesus said in a press release. She continued:

Her recording was so devastatingly beautiful, it spoke to me on many levels. The song evoked so much yearning and sadness, yet at the same time it felt so delicate, like her voice could lift off and fly away. It felt like the purest expression of the ineffable Armenian Soul. I never thought I’d be able to do the song justice, and I still don’t, but the song is so meaningful to me that performing it became a compulsion. Once I heard about the crisis happening in Artsakh, my heart really pained for the Armenian people. They have survived genocides, wars, battles for autonomy and independence, and now this—fighting to reclaim a sacred place that represents so much of their ancient heritage and resilience. I wanted to honor and pay my support to the Armenian Soul, and to acknowledge all the lives tragically lost this year in the war with Azerbaijan. Proceeds of this song will go to the Armenian Fund, to help support the needs of civilians on the ground in Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh).

Last month, System of a Down released the new songs “Protect the Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz.” Proceeds also benefitted the Armenia Fund.

Zola Jesus released her most recent studio album Okovi in 2017. Earlier this year she dropped a live album titled Live at Roadburn 2018.

New Hawkeye Set Photos Tease 2025 Setting and Major Plot Point

A new batch of behind-the-scenes photos from the New York City set of Disney+’s highly-anticipated MCU series Hawkeye have surfaced online through Twitter which you can check out below, featuring Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton and Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop along with the adorable Lucky the Pizza Dog. In one of the set photos which features a Chinese New Year poster, it seemingly confirmed that the series will be set two years after Avengers: Endgame in 2025.

In addition, eagle-eyed fans have also spotted Renner wearing an hearing aid in the set photos which fueled speculations that Marvel studios would finally be adapting one of Hawkeye’s prominent storylines from the comics. It’s also interesting to note that in the newly released set photos, Renner and Steinfeld are seen sitting in sitting in front of a door which featured a Mandarin sign that reportedly translates to “Auditory Therapist.”

The Hawkeye limited series will see Jeremy Renner reprising his role as Clint Barton, with the story also set to introduce his protege Kate Bishop, who is officially being portrayed by Hailee Steinfeld.

It will be directed by Amber Finlayson and Katie Ellwood, aka Bert and Bertie, who are best known for their work on Troop Zero, and Rhys Thomas (Staten Island Summer). Hawkeye is expected to debut in Fall 2021 on Disney+.

In the comics, Bishop becomes Hawkeye after Clint Barton, and is also a member of the Young Avengers. Disney has not yet confirmed if they have plans to give Bishop her own spinoff show or have her appear in the MCU down the road, but it is certainly a possibility.

The project’s working title “Anchor Point” is actually serving as a homage to the first volume of Kelly Thompson’s fan-favorite comic book series that was published in 2017. Titled as Vol.1: Anchor Points, it was Kate Bishop’s first solo comic series after appearing in the Young Avengers issues. However, it’s still unknown if the said comics’ storyline would connect to the series’ plot or not.

Angel Olsen, Wye Oak, TORRES, More Contribute to New Merge Records Album to Benefit Georgia Democrats

0

Merge Records has released a covers compilation to support Georgia Democrats Jon Osoff and Rev. Dr. Raphael Warnock in their bids for the U.S. Senate. It features 17 covers of songs by Georgia artists. Contributors include TORRES, H.C. McEntire (featuring Amy Ray and Angel Olsen), Superchunk, and Wye Oak. Below, listen to Titus Andronicus’ cover of Indigo Girls’ “Closer to Fine.” Buy the collection, called Going to Georgia, at Bandcamp.

All of the proceeds from Going to Georgia will benefit Fair Fight Action and Mijente, two organizations prioritizing voter advocacy in Georgia. Voter-registration efforts from Fair Fight and Mijente helped the state go Democratic in this year’s presidential election. The state’s runoff elections, which will determine party control of the Senate, will be held on Tuesday, January 5 2021.

Merge and Superchunk co-founder Mac McCaughan shared a short statement about Going to Georgia, which takes its name from a Mountain Goats song:

We live in North Carolina, where a racist Republican legislature has worked for a generation to undermine democracy through unprecedented voter suppression. Our neighbors in Georgia have successfully fought back, through the efforts of Fair Fight and other organizations. The voters who turned Georgia blue in November can now elect Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, take back power in the Senate, and make true progress possible in this country.

The Merge artists on this comp came together quickly, recording in various quarantine situations, to pay tribute to their favorite artists from Georgia, or maybe just record their favorite songs with “Georgia” in the title, and to support those working hard in Georgia to make sure everyone’s voice is heard.

Death Cab for Cutie have also released a Bandcamp exclusive EP of similarly minded Georgia covers this week, featuring tracks by TLC, Neutral Milk Hotel, R.E.M., and more.
