Thunderous. I listen to a lot of electronic music besides jazz, and am relatively accustomed to hearing new sounds. But this album blew me away.
Orgy in Rhythm opens up the possibilities of the acoustic drumset in a way no other album has (at least to my limited knowledge). Three drumsets and three of the greatest drummers.
And Timpanis and Latin percussion. GOOD GOD. I wish more artists would show this sincerity in their playing and this willingness to experiment. If you play drums, BUY THIS ALBUM.
If you listen to a lot of the more “out there” sampled music (Amon Tobin, etc.) BUY THIS ALBUM. If you ever wondered what three drumsets would sound like together in a dark reverbed room, BUY THIS ALBUM.
With Art Blakey resuming his longtime contract with Blue Note Records (1953-64) following a brief stay with Columbia Records, he served up a different type of album when he gathered a group of percussionists for his next percussion-led session with Orgy In Rhythm in 1957.
Featuring a few top percussionists like Sabu Martinez, the congueros Jose Valiente and the great Potato’ Valdez, and even session drummers Jo Jones and Art Taylor, Orgy In Rhythm showcases a slight mixture of Afro-Cuban jazz, African and Cuban percussion rhythms, American jazz and high pitched driven backgrounds which make this form of artistry in jazz a haunting and eclectic work of musical genius.
With a track set featuring all compositions written by Blakey includ- ing Buhaina’s Chant, Elephant Walk and Come Out And Meet Me Tonight, this ses- sion is also peppered with Sabu’s chants on some of the tracks, as it features guest appearances flautist Herbie Mann and Ray Bryant, which make this crash course in World Music-style jazz a challenging listening experience full of amore and compel- ing skill, which had been gracefully brought in a splendid fit for it’s CD format.
With each tune done just once, the stressed communication between the performing had represented a spontaneous feeling while Sabu directs the Latin rhythm section with sheer fascination, which contribute to the success of this percussion-led production.

Before I jump into my boring details give the sound samples a run through. This is not the thunderous Art Blakey driving the Jazz Messengers. It is the synthesis of Blakeys influences when he spent time in Africa during 1948-49.
