There have been rumors online suggesting that Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo received vastly different paychecks for their roles in Wicked. These rumors claim that Grande, who portrayed Glinda, earned significantly more than the other cast members. The supposed pay disparity stirred widespread discussions, leading fans to question whether the rumors were true.

Let’s take a closer look at the details to clarify the situation and address the rumors.

Did Ariana Grande get paid more than Cynthia Erivo for Wicked?

Universal Pictures confirmed that the rumors are false. The studio confirmed that Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo received equal pay for their roles in Wicked.

A viral report had claimed that Ariana Grande earned $15 million for her role as Glinda, while Cynthia Erivo, who played Elphaba, reportedly received only $1 million, despite having more screen time. The report caused a stir, especially as it claimed supporting actors like Michelle Yeoh (Madame Morrible) and Jeff Goldblum (The Wizard of Oz) earned $2 million each. Fans expressed their disappointment on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), over the apparent pay disparity.

However, Universal Pictures swiftly debunked these reports. A representative from the studio clarified that the rumors were false, stating, “Reports of pay disparity between Cynthia and Ariana are completely false and based on internet fodder.” The statement, released to The Hollywood Reporter, confirmed that both lead actresses received the same salary for the film, refuting any claims of pay discrimination. The studio did not disclose the specific salaries of the lead actors.

The Wicked: Part One, directed by Jon M. Chu, was released on November 22. It performed exceptionally well during its opening weekend, earning $114 million in the U.S. and $164.2 million globally. Notably, the film’s opening surpassed that of Les Misérables (2012), another Broadway adaptation, breaking box office records.
