Afán was born in the hands of Damián Alvarez Castro while studying jazz at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp. The harmonic influence of teachers such as Nicolas Thys, Wout Gooris and Free Desmyter helped him in the creation process.
Afán has been played as a jazz ballad by Samuel Cooremans and Griet Grypdonck who also participated in the growth of the musical piece.
Here you can enjoy this version:

Its creator Damián Alvarez Castro found it appropriate to change the musical style of Afán to its Cuban rhythmic roots, giving it an Afro-Cuban touch when he started in the Dúo Habana, where he is accompanied by the Trombonist/Pianist/Arranger and educator Andrés Frenández.

In the year 2021 Damián Alvarez Castro was chosen to participate in the first edition of the European Jazz’s Cool Project, which took place in Rome (Italy) and in which many Conservatories from all over Europe participated.
For this opportunity Alvarez makes a musical arrangement to Afan to be played by Trombone and Tenor sax.
