Edible, decorative, and functional details from the Commerce Inn.

When news broke in 2019 that Jody Williams and Rita Sodiâs next project, the Commerce Inn, would be located in the old Grange Hall space where Commerce Street curves into Barrow, it didnât come as a surprise. The address falls squarely in the chef coupleâs picturesque West Village wheelhouse. What raised eyebrows was the fact that their new spot would be not only American â a first for the owners of Via Carota, I Sodi, and Buvette â but philosophically Shaker, a cuisine category heretofore unsearchable in the databases of Yelp, Zagat, or Michelin.
Despite a reputation for austerity, the Shakers, a.k.a. the United Society of Believers in Christâs Second Appearing, really knew how to eat. They were agricultural whizzes. They grew tons of herbs that they cooked with and also dried and sold along with seeds they packaged, an innovation at the time. They were ingredient connoisseurs, die-hard locavores, seasonality freaks, picklers and preservers, and always open to new ideas and techniques. Itâs no wonder this legacy appealed to Williams and Sodi, cooks who prize simplicity and craftsmanship above all.

âThis has been percolating for ten years,â says Williams, whose interest in the Shakersâ era and influence was stoked by her familyâs own passed-down cookbooks and her curiosity about lost American recipes and local food traditions. The more the partners learned, the more connections they saw between the farm-to-table sentiments of yesterday and today and the ingredient-driven approach of Sodiâs native Tuscan cuisine. When the pandemic delayed their opening, they had a year to hone the been-there-forever-seeming dĂ©cor, a convergence of Shaker-inspired custom furnishings and period antiques, and to develop the menu. Williams asked her bartenders to âjust imagine you have a farm outside this door to supply this bar,â which helped engender cocktails like a beet-tinged vodka martini and an Irish-coffee riff sweetened with maple sugar. âSame in the kitchen,â she adds.
The front tavern room opened quietly in November with a limited menu of simple-sounding foods like bone marrow, rarebit, and meat pie. But simplicity is deceiving: Sodi and Williams are pickling their own oysters, smoking their own cod, and making their own ham as well as baking bread and curing bacon. The cooks also began trying out dishes intended for the dining-room menu, like rabbit stew and greens with buttermilk dressing. The plan is to be open all day â a neighborhood tavern serving the community duck-scrapple breakfasts and salt-beef sandwiches, humble seeming but chef engineered. Or, as Williams puts it, âall the food I want to eat.â

Freeform’s new series, Single Drunk Female, premieres Jan. 20 and we are ready for it. The dramedy, starring Sofia Black-D’Elia, Ally Sheedy, Rebecca Henderson, follows Samantha Fink (Black-D’Elia), a 20-something alcoholic as she is forced to move back home to Boston and her overbearing mother Carol (Sheedy), in order to sober up and avoid jail time. And in an E! exclusive clip, we get a first look at what’s to come in the new Simone Finch-created series.Â
“What brings you here today?” Samantha is asked at an AA meeting. “Public intoxication, destruction of personal property, almost blinding my coworker, being awesome,” she replies.Â
“Hello, Smother,” she says as she gets into her mom’s car.Â
Carol, unfazed by Samantha’s attitude, responds, “Did you just talk about me the whole time?”
“Yes, Mother. It’s all about you,” Samantha sarcastically replies. “But yeah, basically.”
Box office juggernaut Spider-Man: No Way Home took in another $52.7 million over the New Yearâs holiday, per Deadline, down just 38% from the week prior. The film has now accrued a massive $610 million in the United States after just three weeks in theaters, making it the tenth highest-grossing domestic release of all time right behind Star Wars â Episode VIII: The Last Jedi ($620 million).

Worldwide, Spider-Man has surpassed $1.37 billion, enough to jump to No. 12 all-time just behind Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.4 billion). Where Spidey ends up is anyoneâs guess. Heâll have most of January to himself, with the only major competition being the action pic The 355 (Jan. 7), Scream (Jan. 14), and Morbius (Jan. 28).
Sing 2 came in second with $19.6 million (-12%) to bring its domestic total to $89.68 million, while The Kingâs Man and American Underdog landed at No. 3 and 4, respectively, with $4.5 million (-24%) and $4.075 million (-31%).
Coming in at No. 5 was Matrix Resurrections with $3.825 million (-64%) in its second week. The sequel will likely top out at around $40 million.
