âIn After Life, Tony (Ricky Gervais) had a perfect life,â says the official synopsis. âBut after his wife Lisa dies, Tony changes. After contemplating taking his own life, he decides instead to live long enough to punish the world by saying and doing whatever he likes from now on. He thinks itâs like a Super Power â not caring about himself or anyone else â but it turns out to be tricky when everyone is trying to save the nice guy they used to know.â
Starring alongside Gervais is Kerry Godliman (Derek) as Tonyâs wife Lisa, Tom Basden (Plebs, David Brent: Life On The Road) as Tonyâs brother-in-law Matt, Tony Way (Edge of Tomorrow) as Tonyâs best-friend Lenny, David Bradley (The Harry Potter series, Game of Thrones) as Tonyâs dad, and Ashley Jensen (Extras) as a Nurse to Tonyâs dad.
The series also features Penelope Wilton (Downton Abbey, Doctor Who), David Earl (Cemetery Junction, Derek), Joe Wilkinson (Him and Her), Kerry Godliman (Derek), Mandeep Dhillon, Jo Hartley, Roisin Conaty, Tim Plester, and Diane Morgan (David Brent: Life On The Road).

Michael Baker is certainly not a new artist. Heâs not even new to Your EDM, as weâve featured his group Head Fake and their new wave style previously. Bakerâs new solo project, Hasten Mercy, is new, however, and more EDM-focused. With the first EP, These Things laced with Happy Mondays-style rave pop, heavier, future bass/dubstep vibes and loads of ambient sound design and synth work, it sounds like Bakerâs testing the waters for his breakout solo style.
With a clear love for early electronica as is evidenced by Head Fake, the first track on Bakerâs first Hasten Mercy release it âStar You Are,â a 90s Brit poptronica-inspired romp whose main piano and synth work is such an homage to the Mondaysâ âStep Onâ that one might even mistake Baker for a much more melodic and less psychedelic Shaun Ryder. The content contained in the lyrics is also quite a bit more uplifting and inclusive. Itâs an interesting opener, but certainly bridges the gap well from Head Fakeâs new wave to the more modern tracks on These Things.
Following âStar You Areâ is âI Break Everything,â the much more introspective and self-deprecating but also more modern ballad-style pop track with lashings of drone and ambient synth work behind the soft digital organ driving the vocal melody. It becomes clear from âI Break Everythingâ that the tracks on These Things are thematically, if not musically connected. The lyrics of âStar You Areâ being so expansive juxtaposed with those of âI Break Everythingâ coming back down to earth and expressing the difficulty with relationships and the fear of emotional intimacy despite that expansive philosophical ability. How does one reconcile macro and mirco? Very few of us are true masters. Bakerâs vocals in these tracks doesnât pretend to solve this problem; just hopes others can relate.
These Things closes with the title track also the most EDM-heavy track, and the relationship and theme of the EP becomes even more clear. The barely audible backing drone synth from âI Break Everythingâ carries into âThese Thingsâ and takes a more prominent role. Still pop in the sense that itâs composed with the lyrics being the driving force, âThese Thingsâ shows Bakerâs mastery of synth and sound design, this track would fit right in at a rave as break music and is begging to be remixed. Also quite introspective and focused on the slings and arrows of social interaction, the difficulties of connecting with others and the need to connect despite anxiety and nervousness is something even the most extroverted of social butterflies can certainly relate to after two years of isolation.
Far from coming full circle, Bakerâs lyrical observations in These Things have no answer despite the expansive tone of âStar You Are.â Rather, theyâre a continuation of not just Hasten Mercyâs but the collective dialog about all the different facets of being human. As we roll into the new year and the possible third year of COVID, itâs good to remember everyoneâs reconciling the expansive with the grounded, the sublime with the worldly. Itâs a strange ride humankind is on, but itâs also somehow noble. These Things are everyoneâs things, and the point might simply be the journey, so we might as well explore them.
These Things is out now and can be streamed on Spotify. Check out Head Fakeâs YouTube for more synths and videos.

What do you think? Are you excited about the return of Real Time with Bill Maher to HBO next month?
Excited about Music, film and photography projects, coming in 2022.
My current music collection has a lot of Eclectic choices.
And a little bit of Fusion.
You wouldnât expect me to listen to Opera, as suchâŠ
Preferred format I actually like listening to the radio, as thatâs the only time I get a chance to discover new talent, solo artists and bands.

5 Albums I Canât Live Without
Â
1
The Köln Concert, Keith Jarrett
I fell in love with this album the moment I heard it. Jarrett plays, near enough, every chord and melody I have ever loved within music⊠My heart melts every time certain sequences are played⊠Always Goosebumps⊠And when I started to play piano (by ear, mid-late teens) I would always try to recreate his style, and would literally have piano pieces that lasted for 10 â 20 Minutes. He was really the inspiration for diving into music the way I didâŠ
2 Any Album, but Pretzel Logic isnât a bad place to start!, Steely Dan
Â
I love Steely Dan, because of their unique lyrical content, melodies and chord progressions.
Their overall sound, was something I admired greatly, and their overall musicianship.
3 Sgt. Pepperâs Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles
Â
This album showed me that you can challenge your songwriting and production, much further than what I thought the limits were⊠Itâs magical in every way, and it also showed me, that you donât have to be pigeon-holed, as a writerâŠthat you can make your own way forward and make your own style, that anything was possible.
4 Hats, The Blue Nile
Â
The moment the album starts, or any of their albums, you are drawn in to the unbelievably expressive voice of Paul Buchanan, who takes you on an emotional journey, like no otherâŠ
5 Any Album, David Bowie
Â
There arenât enough words to describe the genius of David BowieâŠ
