Better Things TV show on FX: canceled or renewed for season 5?

(Suzanne Tenner/FX)

Better Things has a premiere date for its fifth and final season. Starring Pamela Adlon, Mikey Madison, Hannah Alligood, Olivia Edward, Celia Imrie, Rebecca Metz, and Alysia Reiner, the series follows a divorced working mom as she raises three daughters on her own. Season five has her dealing with what comes next as her daughters start to come of age.

FX revealed more about the return of the comedy in a press release.

“The acclaimed and award-winning comedy series Better Things, directed by, produced by and starring Pamela Adlon, will premiere its fifth and final season on Monday, February 28 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX and streaming on Hulu. The premiere event will feature the first two episodes of the fifth season, followed by a new episode each subsequent week.

“While it’s bittersweet to present the finale of Pamela’s masterpiece, we adore the upcoming season and think fans will love the episodes as much as we do,” said John Landgraf, Chairman, FX. “Our thanks to Pamela, the extraordinary cast, the crew and everyone who worked on Better Things for putting an exclamation point on this brilliant, original, radically humanistic series.”

In its fifth and final chapter, Better Things focuses on ‘the road ahead’ for its unconventional, unfiltered heroine, Sam Fox (Pamela Adlon), so devoted to her life as a working actor and single mother of three that she’s left little time for that one elusive thing: herself. As she navigates three daughters, each coming of age; the challenges of her chosen career; and her mother’s increasing signs of aging (as well as her own) – Sam embraces each moment, and each member of her family, with a fierce love, raw honesty and biting humor. As each of the Fox women come of age into the next phase of their life, they are inspired to reevaluate themselves, learn from the past and find their own direction.

Pamela Adlon stars in Better Things for which she is also an executive producer, writer and the sole director for season five. In addition to Adlon, the series stars Mikey Madison, Hannah Riley, Olivia Edward and Celia Imrie. Better Things is produced by FX Productions.

The final season will also feature guest stars Lena Waithe, Ron Cephas Jones, Danny Trejo, Marty Krofft, Clive Russell, Casey Wilson, Rainbow Sun Francks, Angela Kinsey, Kevin Michael Richardson, Nelson Lee, Lennon Parham and Usman Ally, as well as the return of Diedrich Bader, Kevin Pollak, Rosalind Chao, Judy Gold, Cree Summer, Alysia Reiner, Greg Cromer, Dominic Burgess, Matthew Glave and Mario Cantone.

Better Things was honored with a Peabody Award and Pamela Adlon has been nominated twice for the Emmy(R) Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Adlon was also nominated for a Golden Globe(R) Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy.”

What do you think? Are you sad to see Better Things end on FX?

SPIN Sets Presents: PENNYWILD

0

PENNYWILD is a tenacious soul who knows exactly what story she wants to write, using her voice to inspire others to relentlessly pursue their quest of liberation in self-expression. With more than enough optimism to go around, PENNYWILD has created an overwhelmingly vibrant community that centers around a free-spirited state of mind. Utilizing her joyous yet empowering perspective, the multi-talented artist is constantly pushing boundaries with her projects. Having recently released her latest project, NIGHT PEOPLE, she brings listeners back to a cherished period in her life that sparked her entire career.

She sat down with SPIN to talk about the inspiration behind this EP, the things she’s learned along the way, what it’s like directing for some of the biggest names in music, and much more. Stream NIGHT PEOPLE here and dance the night away with her SET below.

PENNYWILD is a Music Producer/ DJ & Director/ Choreographer living in Los Angeles by way of New York City – and she is very much still figuring it all out. I stand for inclusivity, boundary pushing, authoring your own success and always staying curious.

Tell us about your sound – where does your style originate from and what have been your biggest visual, social, and sonic influences?

Some of my biggest sonic influences include Paul Johnson, MikeQ, Nile Rogers, Masters at Work, Robyn, NVOY, Disclosure, Gorgon City, and Azealia Banks, amongst many others. I’ve also been influenced in one way or another by the following creatives of various disciplines — Stephen Sondheim, Hiro Murai, ATRAK, Parris Goebel, Tennyson, Grimes, Kendrick Lamar, Keone & Mari Madrid, etc.

Was there a definitive turning point to your success? When did you realize the magnitude of your impact within the industry/community?

Because I discovered electronic music at an older age than I would have preferred to, I didn’t have years of experiencing bringing the sounds I heard in my head to the DAW. Having exclusively pursued Musical Theatre up until about age 23, I didn’t really have any sort of music production skill-set. That forced me to approach things differently – in whatever way was most accessible to me at the time within the parameters of what I knew how to do. I approached music making from a dancer’s perspective, and conceptualizing from a theatrical one. What came out of that was some “atypical” electronic projects, and although it was pretty discouraging at the time, I am now so grateful for my niche lens. The logistical boundaries brought creative abundance.

You just released the infectious NIGHT PEOPLE, which is described as “a love letter to the underground.”- take us into this project’s universe and how you became inspired to pursue this concept.

During quarantine, I found myself eerily nostalgic for my “glory days” (aka 2016-2019, when I was exploring the queer/ electronic music scenes in NYC and LA). I would catch myself staring at a half-fleshed out project in Ableton, and all I wanted to do was add crowd noise, random adlibs, and field recordings of soundbites from friends I had collected over the years. This made one thing clear – like most other people I knew, I missed dancing; I missed going out. Frustrated at the lack of cohesion of the sounds I was playing with, I decided to start from scratch and capture some new chatter based on very specific prompts/ concepts. I would “interview” friends over Zoom, and ask them to role-play different stages of our shared nights out. What resulted was 3 GBs of dynamic, interesting, and hilarious one liners from friends. I spent a lot of time re-arranging them to make any sort of narrative sense, and the sonic texture of NIGHT PEOPLE was born.

What song off of this EP do you feel most personally connected to?

I really do love each track like they are my firstborn, but I think I may favor “SIDE STREETS.” I’ve always wanted to find a way to honor the sacred ritual that is commuting from the pre-game to the main event, because I love the organic camaraderie and excitement that anticipation brings. Whether it be heading from Manhattan to Brooklyn or from Orange County to Los Angeles, that time inside the car/Uber always gets me giddy. I think “SIDE STREETS” does a good job of encapsulating that experience.

Talk to us about a pivotal learning moment while creating this EP.

Contrast = interest. If you don’t color your creation with a dichotomy of dynamics, there is nothing to be surprised or titillated by. Opposition and change can be very effective.

You’re a well rounded creative, being a dancer/choreographer who has choreographed for some big stages and also a director who has partnered up with Zedd & RL Grime on music videos – How have these perspectives bled into your work as a producer?

I think Directing and Producing have a lot in common. At the end of the day in both roles, you’re a decision maker. Both of these titles allow you to create amongst a group of experts in their respective fields and get everyone on the same page to portray a singular vision. While the Director’s “experts” are various creative specialists (Choreographers, Costume Designers, HMU), the Music Producer’s “experts” are instrumentalists (Vocalists, Pianists, the synthetic instruments in your DAW).The vision has to be clear, and morale needs to be grounded and positive. I love these roles because they are utmost collaborative.

In what ways have you pushed yourself beyond existing self-imposed limitations?

In 2015, I dropped out of college where I was feverishly studying Musical Theatre, and moved to Los Angeles with the aspiration to become a musician. I had no formal training in music, but a helluva lot of training as an actor, singer, and dancer. “Throwing away” all of the skills I had worked so hard to acquire for the first 20-something years of my life was a hard pill to swallow, but I knew if I didn’t follow my newfound passion of music production, I’d never forgive myself. Electronic music had enticed me in a way that Broadway had all those years ago — so I knew it was the real deal. I remember receiving quite a bit of judgement from my peers at the time — “What is she doing in LA?” “She wants to be a DJ?” etc. Despite the questionable decision to some, I’m grateful I followed my heart and made the plunge.

What’s next for PENNYWILD?

I have spent the last few years working on conceptual/cohesive bodies of work (MIDI In Motion, NIGHT PEOPLE, etc) so I’m really excited to release a number of stand-alone singles that are not attached to larger narrative pieces of work. 2022 is all about singles, and I’m really stoked to have some fun with their accompanied visuals/ general rollout. I’ve never given myself permission to release music purely for music’s sake, and now is the time! Additionally, I’ll be Directing/Choreographing some music videos/ visuals for other artists that I admire tremendously, which should garner some incredible collaboration. Stay tuned!

What do you wish for the future of electronic music? In what ways would you like to see it evolve?

Generally speaking, I’d love to see more elements of art on stage. I think that set/ light designers, dancers, actors, visual artists etc are incredibly under-utilized at these main stage festival DJ sets. It would be really exciting to see some more immersive performances – sets that you’ll walk away from having had a real three dimensional experience. I’d love to see artists take more risks!

Any last words for the SPIN-verse?

Thank you, SPIN, for amplifying artist voices – especially the marginalized! Black Lives Matter; Trans Lives Matter.

JAMES BEARD AWARD-WINNING CHEF MICHAEL SCHWARTZ RELAUNCHES MICHAEL’S GENUINE FOOD & DRINK

0

James Beard Award-winning Chef Michael Schwartz and The Genuine Hospitality Group reopened the doors to their Miami Design District culinary icon, Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink. During the four month hiatus, the eatery underwent a series of enhancements to elevate its decor, reinvent its kitchen space and expand its dining room to face  40th street. This will create a brighter space that leads into the renovated courtyard and provides an indoor/outdoor experience with seating for up to 200 guests.

“Every restaurant needs to evolve, and after 14 years we felt it was time for Michael’s Genuine to undergo a refresh and expansion. We doubled the size of our kitchen to accommodate a growing team that will create the dishes that have kept our guests coming back time and time again. It was essential to keep the spirit of Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink alive in all aspects. We’re excited to provide an even more genuine experience to our guests just in time to celebrate our 15th anniversary,” shares Michael Schwartz.

Schwartz worked closely with designer Marcela Lombana to bring the evolved vision of his eponymous restaurant to life, creating a warm and inviting space that’s reflective of Michael’s hospitality philosophy. Additions to the space include an expansion into an adjacent space fronting 40th street that boasts high ceilings, floating wood pendant lights and lush greenery intended to bring the outside in. Guests will recognize the bolero red accented walls and artwork including the refurbished Carl Myers coin mosaic carryover from the original decor.

The main dining area flows into the outside terrace via sliding doors that lead to a cozy, enticing, and breezy spot for guests to sip and dine. The terrace offers a multitude of seating options that compliment the restaurant design, and a retractable roof that makes outdoor dining possible every day of the year. Diners looking to experience a brighter space can sit at the front of the restaurant, while those looking for a subdued and cozy ambiance can dine closer to the bar. For larger groups, a new banquette sets the tone for a conversational evening. Guests can also enjoy the Chef’s table located in the middle of the action with views into the bustling kitchen.

To accompany the refreshed look, the menu at MGFD features new additions crafted by Michael Schwartz, Senior Director of Culinary Bradley Herron and Executive Chef Dillion Wolff including whole roasted tuna collar prepared “Sicilian style”; wood roasted camembert with golden chanterelle mushrooms, garlic toast; long cooked squash with harissa, tomato, caraway, basil crispy garlic and lamb massaman curry with thai fried egg salad, jasmine rice. Many signature items will still be available including favorites such as the stracciatella, wood oven roasted octopus and pan roasted poulet rouge.

The menu features a new market table section boasting simply prepared seasonal vegetables served room temperature or cold including roasted & marinated fennel with anchovy, orange, fennel pollen and calabrian chile; chilled dashi cooked turnips with miso and sesame. The menu also features an enhanced wine list and a new cocktail program designed by the talented beverage team led by Beverage Director Amanda Fraga.

On the heels of the restaurant’s much-anticipated relaunch, the fan favorite happy hour returns  Monday through Friday from 4:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with half off wines by the glass, beers, speciality cocktails and several snack items to be enjoyed at the bar and high top tables.

As part of the relaunch, The Genuine Hospitality Group [TGHG] is partnering with nonprofit Rethink Food to address food insecurity in Miami. Checks will provide patrons with the opportunity to contribute. The contributions will be directed to Pack Supermarket and Cafe and Le Jardin in Little Haiti, which will prepare and distribute nutritious meals to the local community via community-based organizations Miami Rescue Mission and Sant La Haitian Neighborhood Center. The Genuine Hospitality Group is also providing a rent-free commissary kitchen space to Rethink Food – the first outside of its headquarters in New York City – to transform excess and donated food from other local partners into nutritious meals for community-based organizations in Miami.

Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. until 11 p.m.; Friday & Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. until 12 a.m. It will be open for brunch and dinner on Sundays from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. Happy Hour is Monday through Friday from 4:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the bar and the hightops. Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink is located at 130 NE 40th Street, Miami, FL 33137. Reservations can be made via Opentable or by email at Reservations@michaelsgenuine.com or by phone at 305.573.5550.

The Black Phone Release Date Pushed Back Four Months by Universal

0

Universal Pictures has delayed The Black Phone release date by four months. Blumhouse’s horror-thriller starring Ethan Hawke was originally set to release on February 4, 2022. Now it will release in theaters on Friday, June 24, 2022. The movie hails from Sinister duo Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill.

The Black Phone is directed by Scott Derrickson from a screenplay he co-wrote with long-time collaborator C. Robert Cargill, based on the award-winning short story by Joe Hill from his New York Times bestseller 20th Century Ghosts.

“The film tells the story of Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, who is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement,” reads the official synopsis. “When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.”

The film is led by Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke along with up-and-coming young actors Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw. Joining them are James Ransone, Jeremy Davies, Brady Hepner, Jacob Moran, and Jordan Isaiah White. It reunites Derrickson, and Cargill with Ethan Hawke and James Ransone, who all worked together on 2012’s Sinister.

The Black Phone is being produced by Derrickson, Cargill, and Jason Blum, with Hill serving as an executive producer. It is a co-production between Blumhouse and Crooked Highway Productions.
