The fifth installment of Scream is co-directed by Ready or Not filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from a screenplay co-written by James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) and Guy Busick (Ready or Not). The film stars returning vets Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Marley Shelton.

“Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past,” reads the synopsis.

Joining them are franchise newcomers Jack Quaid (The Boys), Melissa Barrera (Vida), Jenna Ortega (The Babysitter: Killer Queen), Mason Gooding (Booksmart), Dylan Minnette (13 Reasons Why), Kyle Gallner (Ghosts of War), Jasmin Savoy Brown (The Leftovers) and Mikey Madison (Better Things).

Scream is being produced by Project X Entertainment’s James Vanderbilt as well as Paul Neinstein and William Sherak for Spyglass. Original screenwriter Kevin Williamson is also executive producing with Radio Silence’s third member Chad Villella.

The first film, released in 1996, was a surprise smash upon its debut, helping to revive the horror genre for the decade and becoming the highest-grossing slasher movie of all time until it was dethroned by last year’s Halloween reboot. The first’s success spawned a franchise that includes three sequels, the first of which remained equally as successful as the first while the previous two saw middling box office returns and mixed reviews.

New Artist Spotlight: Tanuki Project Is ‘Adamant’ About their New Releases [Video]

0

Tanuki Project is much less a “new artist” than an undiscovered gem from Canada who’s been producing innovative music and touring with increasingly complex audio-visual shows since 2009. It’s actually criminal they haven’t had more interest yet, as the quality both of production and performance rivals the likes of Bjork, Massive Attack, Phantogram and modern-era Kraftwerk, to name a few. That seems about to change, however, with the release of the first two chapters from their new EP series, Adamant.

Adamant Chapter#01 released back in June and its lead track “Dystopia” has garnered the duo nearly 200k streams on Spotify, so it seems someone is indeed noticing them. It seems with this project, Tanuki project have really honed their style musically, striking a balance of hip hop and drone structure with ambient and experimental sound design and layered, nuanced melodies from programmer Legyl’s synths and vocalist Nady’s lyrics. There’s something sophisticated about the way this project was produced thus far that will likely make it appeal to a wide range of fans.

It’s not to say that previous releases by Tanuki Project weren’t sophisticated as well. It’s clear from releases like 2019’s “Happening” single, where Nady channels her inner Nina Hagen, and 2015’s UKG-and-soundsystem-inspired EP, the aptly named Soundsystem that the pair approach their composition with a healthy love of experimental music theory and likely a classical-style libretto to hand. “Experimental” is the key term here, however, as it seems with those releases and their many others prior to Adamant, Legyl and Nady were still very much in their wild west phase sound-wise. It was wild, interesting and passionate to be sure, but it seems with Adamant, they’ve screwed down some of the loose nuts and bolts to make something a bit more grounded. Almost.

While Adamant Chapter#01 is melodic, orchestral and conjures feelings of early trip hop (for lack of a better comparison), Chapter#02, released just this past weekend, brings back that wilder, experimental style of previous Tanuki Project releases. Depending more on drone and a sound design template that sounds almost industrial, the title track opens the EP sounding desolate and minimal before the staff is filled with space-inspired ambient work, classical piano and a distant and haunting vocal melody from Nady. Think Krafterk meets Bowie’s “Space Oddity.” “Mountain” is even more drone-driven and industrial bringing a real techno beat into the middle of the track, making it the most danceable of the Adamant project thus far. That is, until it gets to closing track, the fun, ultra-ravey and trap-grounded “Question.”

It would seem both installments of Adamant are almost too short, clearly leaving the listener wanting more, but there’s so much to unpack sonically, most fans probably wont complain. These are the types of tracks one can listen to hundreds of times and still hear something new on each listen. They’re dense, emotive and endlessly complex. And we haven’t even talked about the visuals yet.

Despite being all electronic, Tanuki Project is meant to be a touring project, with loads of visuals lighting up the stage both in the background and the 3D foreground. They’ve gotten more and more complex over the years, reaching a sort of apotheosis as the duo began traveling with an A/V expert to debut Adamant right before COVID hit. Touring and travel in general have been very limited in Canada, so while they still have their A/V show locked and loaded, they’ve decided to shift focus for the time being to videos.

The first video is for the single “Slow” off Adamant Chapter#01 released in mid-November and was directed by international commercial director whose passion is experimental videos, Thomas Castaing. The video puts an emotional visual point on the message of the song: the sense of isolation and loss that can come from so many places but which we all felt and still feel during COVID. It’s also a call to appreciate life and humanness, even when humanity feels completely mad. There is still great love here, both song and video seem to say, and the story hasn’t ended; it’s just slowed down.

With the goosebump-inducing “Slow” video pairing, one could say it’s definitely a good thing that Tanuki Project is opting to add cinematic-style videos to their A/V repertoire. With more videos planned for Adamant Chapter#02 and beyond, it’s clear the duo can translate the feelings from their shows to personal screens and have a similar impact. While no one quite knows the future at the moment, artists like Tanuki Project are forging ahead to give both music and film fans more hope and beauty so that maybe we can come to appreciate this slowed-down story, or at the very least the art created and contained within it. To quote the duo themselves:

Head-up, soul wide, gliding across the plain. Present Senses searching. Watching, breathing, hearing, Bare feet feeling the earth, Heart rooted in nature. Life nasty, brutish and short. But at least aware, at least alive, at least here.

Both chapters of Adamant are out now and can be streamed on Spotify. Check out Tanuki Project’s YouTube channel to see clips from their previous shows. Their wider catalog can be streamed or purchased on Bandcamp.

Miss Angela

An authentic new voice has been revealed. If you’ve never heard of Angela Alvarez that’s because the 93 year old Cuban-American has just had her lifetime’s work of songs discovered. Fellow Cuban-American and refugee, actor ANDY GARCIA narrates (and plays in her band!) the momentous and inspiring story of Angela’s flight from Cuba in the 1960’s and subsequent ‘ordinary’ life as wife, mother and working woman who hid her childhood ambition to be a singer and songwriter. Only when her Grandson, Carlos Alvarez, now a successful composer in Hollywood, asked about the ‘traditional’ Cuban folk songs she had been singing to generations of the family, did he unearth a catalogue of original songs, charting her traumatic life. Now with the music recorded by world renowned Cuban musicians from the Buena Vista Social Club and Grammy award winners, 91 year old Angela Alvarez is ready to start her career.

What’s This TV Show About?

Streaming on the Paramount+ subscription service, Why Women Kill is a darkly comedic anthology drama from Marc Cherry. Season two stars Allison Tolman, Lana Parilla, B.K. Cannon, Jordane Christie, Matthew Daddario, Veronica Falcón, and Nick Frost. The second season’s story takes place in 1949 and explores what it means to be beautiful, the hidden truth behind the facades people present to the world, the effects of being ignored and overlooked by society, and finally, the lengths one woman will go in order to finally belong.

Telly’s Take

Unless they decide to publicize viewership, it is difficult to predict whether Paramount+ will cancel or renew Why Women Kill for season three. Since Paramount+ isn’t ad-supported, it can take a chance on series it believes in, but sooner or later it comes down to production costs, versus viewership numbers. Given that this anthology series comes from Marc Cherry, I’m leaning toward a renewal. I’ll keep my ears open and an eye out for news, and will update this page with breaking developments. A Day in the Life of…Katelyn Tarver

0

“Growing up, I put on countless shows in the living room for my family, I did dance recitals, I sang solos at church and at our small-town festivals…” LA-based, Georgia-raised Katelyn Tarver tells us. “I was a shy kid but something would click in me when I got on a stage. I was always drawn to it. Even to this day I almost always tear up at the beginning of a concert. That moment when the lights go down, the crowd cheers, there’s this collective excitement for what we’re all about to experience…so magical to me, and the idea that I get to be a part of that in any way as my career makes me feel like the luckiest person alive.”

Her new album Subject To Change, released in November, is an exquisite showcase of her pull-at-your-heartstrings lyrical and vocal prowess. “It usually starts with a lyric I have written down in my notes and then I just try to build out a world around the feeling it brings up,” she says. “I have relationships with a few co-writers and producers who I feel really comfortable opening up to, which I think makes all the difference. They also know my style and instincts at this point, which is helpful in creating an environment to create in and take risks. And then I just try and write a song that feels honest and authentic to me, and sometimes it happens and sometimes we get nothing and just have to call it and try again the next day!”

The result is a style she categorizes as “emotional/introspective/melancholy/singer-songwriter indie pop”. We just call it stunning.

“Existential questions, a rough patch in my life, transitions, reflecting on difficult past experiences. It all inspired the album,” she says, of Subject To Change. “The title has a few different meanings to me. A lot of the songs are about staring down change and uncertainty and my thoughts and fears around that, so I thought it was a fitting title to sum that up. It’s also kind of a statement of how I view the world right now. A realization that life isn’t about arriving at this ultimate place of happiness. It’s up and down. It’s messy. Every gain comes with some type of loss. Nothing is ever static. And maybe accepting that and trying to embrace it instead of white-knuckling onto certainty and this idea of perfection is a good place to be.”

She has a few dates left in her 2021 tour, which will resume in March of next year. Be sure to check her out.

Here’s a day in the life of Katelyn Tarver.

Date  October 25, 2021

Time I woke up 8:00 a.m. (okay 8:45)

Every day starts with Scrolling Instagram! How many articles will I have to read telling me that that’s the worst way to start your day before I actually listen? I do not know…

Breakfast consists of Granola and coffee.

To get going I always Go for a walk and call my manager to ask him what I’m supposed to be

doing that day.

I don’t feel dressed without My teeth brushed.

Before I start working I must Clean out my closet, do laundry, organize a junk drawer, pay my water bill, call an old friend…you get the point.

Currently working on Album promo/ trying to figure out a Halloween costume.

But I’d really love to be On tour! Sooooon!

Book I’m reading No One Asked For This: Essays  by Cazzie David.

I don’t know how anyone ever Doesn’t lose their sunglasses a few times a year.

If I had to play one album on repeat, it would be  Continuum by John Mayer.

The perfect midday consists of An impromptu, big lunch out somewhere with a friend that makes me laugh.

To help get through the day I need  A La Croix by noon.

Not a day goes by without speaking to  My brother and sister.

My daydreams consist of Me on a terrace in Italy overlooking cliffs and the ocean. Me playing a big sold out concert. Me buying groceries and actually eating them throughout the week instead of getting delivery by Tuesday.

In a perfect day, in a perfect world  All my friends would play a board game with me without giving me shit for wanting them to play a board game with me.

I’ll always fight for The idea that that that scary thing you’re feeling, as isolating as it seems, is probably a feeling a lot of other people have had and you’re not crazy.

Currently in love with Anyone who has bought a ticket to my shows/bought my vinyl/bought my merch/streamed my music… I feel so overwhelmed with love from my fans lately! It’s really the best.

Hoping to make time to watch The Crown. But I’ve been saying that for two years now…

By my bedside I always have Two glasses of water. One fresh one that I just made, and one still there from the night before that I forgot to put away.

To help get through the night I use a Snooz sound machine. If you are a baby like me and need white noise to sleep, this is the best one I’ve come across. (not an ad but….. Snooz wya???!)

Bed time Truly anywhere from 10:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m. depending on the day.

When I think about tomorrow, it’s always  Oh, I should get that thing done I’ve been meaning to get done! Tomorrow will be the day!

Lyrics
All my life I keep on searching for that special thing
How I’ve tried to always find a love and understanding
To always see the light of day and to know that I am living
All my life I won’t take if I’m not giving

Only when the rain comes down
Only when the lightning strikes me
Will I find the answer for myself

It’s got to be real
Be the best nothing less than wonderful
It’s got to be real this time
What’s waiting there inside
It’s got to be real
Knowing love know it can be powerful
It’s got to be really love
So we can rise above

All my life I try to see the love inside myself
And I keep on trying in no uncertain terms
To let my light shine through

Only when the rain comes down
Only when the lightning strikes me
Will I find the answer for myself

It’s got to be real
Be the best nothing less than wonderful
It’s got to be real this time
What’s waiting there inside
It’s got to be real
Knowing love know it can be powerful
It’s got to be really love
So we can rise above

To always see the light of day and to know that I am living
All my life I won’t take if I’m not giving

Only when the rain comes down
Only when the lightning strikes me
Will I find the answer for myself

It’s got to be real
Be the best nothing less than wonderful
It’s got to be real this time
What’s waiting there inside
It’s got to be real
Knowing love know it can be powerful
It’s got to be really love
So we can rise above
