Grub Street’s 20 Most-Read Stories of 2021

0

While 2020 was a catastrophic year for restaurants, 2021 gave us reasons for at least some level of renewed optimism. Long-shuttered businesses reopened, and we all started to (carefully) return to the places and experiences we’d been missing. In turn, we ran into an entirely fresh set of problems: staffing woes, ingredient shortages, and even masking etiquette in the age of partial vaccination.

On Grub Street, we asked ourselves big questions (When a neighborhood begins to gentrify, what does it mean for longtime residents?) and small questions that had surprisingly big answers (Why is it suddenly so hard to find bucatini?) in an effort to make sense of this new way in which we work, eat, and have fun. Are things back to “normal”? Certainly not, and 2021’s most-read stories offer a look back through a truly peculiar year filled with highs, lows, and far too many espresso martinis.

North Hollywood Shootout – Best Cut

North Hollywood Shootout – Best Cut

– There were Two decent Documentaries on the N. Hollywood Bank Robbery… But Neither seemed Complete, and Each had Discrepancies about the Details. _____________ (PS, Skip to 10:39 if you know the Story)

So I took both 45 Minute Documentaries, and Edited them into ONE, 40 Minute Doc.

I really did this for Myself… But Hey. Why not Share, right?

This contains Footage from “Shootout!”, and some NatGeo documentary.

As a side-note, I edited this together Last Night, and dreamed that I was one of the Gunmen. And it was SO BAD ASS. I was just Wasting people left and right. I ended up being Captured after I ran out of Ammo, and couldn’t find my Pistol to Alt+F4 myself. I pretended to have a Russian accent.

Also, for some reason, there was an Older Lady Cop that asked for my Permission to Stick my finger for a Blood Sample, after I was cuffed. I said yes, which surprised her. Weird.

I kept trying to Wake Myself Up before the Policemen came and Beat the Shit out of me for being a Cop-killer.

Happy Birthday, Mason & Reign Disick! Look Back at Their Cutest Photos

0

The Disick boys are almost men.

In case you wanted to feel old this Tuesday, Dec. 14, Mason Disick is turning 12 years old and is basically all grown up at this point! His little brother Reign Disick also rings in his 8th birthday on the same day. These Keeping Up With the Kardashians b-day twins have plenty to celebrate this year.

From adorably watching dad Scott Disick help Reign lose a tooth to “boyz night” dinners, the Disick men are always keeping it fresh. Plus, sister Penelope Disick has even let Reign join in on her TikToks and the Disick kids have enjoyed blended family outings with mom Kourtney Kardashian and her fiancĂŠ Travis Barker‘s three teens Alabama, Landon and step-daughter Atiana.

“The younger kids looked up to the older kids and they looked like one big happy family,” an eyewitness exclusively told E! News during the Kardashian-Barker family vacation to Mexico last month.

Spider-Man: No Way Home Review: A Superhero Extravaganza

0

It’s time once again to revisit our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, the teenage superhero who shoots a web any size and catches thieves just like flies. A new adventure faces our heroes in Spider-Man: No Way Home as Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) secret identity is revealed to the world. He enlists the help of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to make things right, but when the spell goes wrong, villains from different universes arrive, all of whom have a bone to pick with Spider-Man.

Spider-Man has had a remarkable history in cinema, with Tobey Maguire’s trilogy of films in the 2000s and Andrew Garfield stepping into the web-slinging role for two films in the early 2010s. This is the third film in Tom Holland’s Marvel Cinematic Universe trilogy after Homecoming and Far From Home, and this time around, we have a film that pays tribute to everything that has been set up in the world of Spider-Man for the past 19 years.

This film brings back characters we’ve previously seen in the Spider-Man movies, most notably Alfred Molina reprising his villainous role as Dr. Otto Octavius. He steps back into the character without missing a beat and shares some fantastic scenes with other people in the film, especially the fight scene between Spider-Man and Doc Ock on the bridge. In addition, the movie brings back a few more villains, and the ways writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers bring them back are tremendously satisfying.

No Way Home also marks a significant departure from the first two films in the series. Marvel is known for its high-stakes world-ending threats, but the MCU Spider-Man films have always managed to combine more minor threats with the whimsical nature of being a teenager in high school. The film starts out this way with the return of Peter’s classmates, Flash and Betty, and the focus on Peter’s personal life as he dreams of going to MIT with Ned (Jacob Batalon) and MJ (Zendaya). But once the inciting incident occurs, everything hits the fan, and the movie takes quite the turn.

This film opens up a massive multiverse of possibilities and takes full advantage of that premise. Peter, Ned, and MJ have an excellent dynamic together, and it’s nice to see MJ as Peter’s girlfriend and a close friend to Ned. It is perhaps even more fun to watch the film’s villains interact as every character’s writing is on point. Even J.K. Simmons returns to his iconic, hilarious role as J. Jonah Jameson for a few scenes that don’t quite elicit the laughs of the Raimi trilogy but work well for the character.

One of the film’s best aspects is Holland, who delivers the best Spider-Man performance of his career. While Holland has previously done an excellent job portraying Peter’s boyish innocence in Homecoming, his character has evolved significantly since then. As a result, his character goes to very dark places that we haven’t seen before, and Holland sells every emotional scene he has.

The movie’s biggest flaw may come from the humor. The first act of the film has many jokes and about half of them land. It can be disappointing how the movie keeps up the MCU tradition of sacrificing serious moments for funny ones. However, when the film gets more serious, it knows how to adjust the tone accordingly while also having fun. The movie’s second half uses humor much more efficiently, having it come out of the dynamic between the characters and not undercutting the movie’s many profound moments.

With the decision to take the series away from Midtown Science High School, Peter is put into fascinating situations. No Way Home hits all the right notes and gives fans what they have been looking for. We have incredible action, especially a classic Mirror Dimension fight with Doctor Strange, and the movie’s ending is pitch-perfect for a Spider-Man film. This is a superhero extravaganza that will not disappoint longtime fans of the web-slinging hero who does whatever a spider can.

SCORE: 9/10

As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 9 equates to “Excellent.” Entertainment that reaches this level is at the top of its type. The gold standard that every creator aims to reach.

Jalal Ramdani Is Taking Over Dance Music With Upcoming International Tour And Performance At The BPM Festival

0

Slowly wrapping up the most explosive year in his career to date, afro house pioneer Jalal Ramdani has taken it upon himself to bring this exciting sound to stages across the world. Throughout this past summer, the Moroccan-raised and UK-based producer was booked to perform at some of the most sought-after clubbing locations worldwide, among them Miami, Tulum, Ibiza, Saint-Tropez, Mykonos, and many more. On top of this impressive touring schedule, he is currently gearing up for his performance at Santa Teresa, Costa Rica, on December 30th, as well as January 18 at The BPM Festival in Costa Rica. This will additionally coincide with an upcoming tour throughout Latin America.

For Jalal Ramdani, every day seems to bring in yet another milestone. Deciding to pursue music in late 2019 after being an algorithmic trader for many years, Jalal Ramdani has managed to bring together his African heritage with his love of house music, and sign his tunes to all the biggest afro house labels in the world, among them Moblack Records, Abracadabra and Madoras, all in a little over a year. His breakout hit came in the form of “Sesa” this summer; a smooth house gem that combines tribal percussion and cinematic vocal lines, in collaboration with Team Distant, Mr Silk and Mel D. The tune quickly gathered praise from the likes of Black Coffee, Adam Port, Rampa and &ME, and is currently being remixed by one of the scene’s legends, as well as Black Coffee’s protégée.

Jalal Ramdani’s impressive journey however is only getting started. When he was invited on an exclusive interview with Moroccan TV channel 2mtv, he talked about how this fast transition from trading to music allowed him to align his scientific mind with his artistic mind, and be in a position to make giant leaps in the span of just a few months. Some of his 2022 plans include the launch of his own music label, as well as the creation of a DJ agency that will nurture talented young DJs, and provide them with the best opportunities in order to shine. Jalal Ramdani’s work ethic is nothing short of impressive, and we’ll definitely be anticipating his latest projects. In the meantime, we’ll be vibing to his recent cover of Babylone’s “Zina,” one of the most beloved songs in Africa.
