West Side Story Slow Out of the Gate, Leads Domestic Box Office
Steven Spielbergâs West Side Story got off to a slow start this weekend, ultimately accruing $10.5 million from 2,820 theaters. That total was enough to put the musical remake atop the domestic box office, ahead of Encanto ($9.42 million/$71.3 million total), Ghostbusters: Afterlife ($7.1 million/$112 million), and House of Gucci ($4.06 million/$41 million), but itâs still a relatively disappointing start for a surefire Oscar contender and critical darling.
Per Deadline, the hope is that West Side Story legs out like The Greatest Showman, which earned $8 million on its opening weekend but eventually accrued $436 million worldwide back in 2017. Of course, as noted by the trade, Showman had the benefit of a pop-heavy soundtrack, while West Side Storyâs tunes are direct lifts from the 1957 Broadway production and popular 1961 Robert Wise musical. With an âAâ CinemaScore, stellar reviews, and plenty of positive Oscar buzz, itâll be interesting to see how high Spielbergâs latest can fly.

Brad Pitt and Damien Quintard Reopening Historic French Recording Studio
Since 2008, Brad Pitt has co-owned a French estate called ChÃĒteau Miravalâand, by extension, the long-dormant recording facility Miraval Studios. Now, Pitt has teamed up with French composer and producer Damien Quintard to renovate and reopen the fabled studio, which hosted sessions for classic records including Pink Floydâs The Wall and the Cureâs Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. The studio, which has been inactive since the early 2000s, will begin hosting sessions in summer 2022.
Quintard, whose rÃĐsumÃĐ includes work with Brian Eno and Arca, said of Pitt in a statement: âWhen we met in Paris, we immediately clicked. It was an intense moment where we just talked and talked about sound. I was amazed at how sensitive and precise he was in his analysis of music.â
Miraval has also hosted AC/DC, Sade, the Cranberries, Courtney Love, and Sting, among others. The renovated studio is built around a custom sound desk designed by Pitt and Quintard.Â

Interview and Bottega Veneta Paint the Town Green

Lil Kim.
Last night, icons of the uptown, downtown, and Brooklyn persuasions gathered to celebrate the opening of Bottega Veneta SoHo. The Italian luxury label marked the establishment of its third New York City location with a two-part evening, beginning with champagne sipping at the brandâs new luxury store. The boutiqueâs designâwhich features richly-lacquered mahogany accents and stone-and-resin floors hand-crafted by Italian artisansâset the scene for an evening of simple pleasures. Tracee Ellis Ross and Lauren Santo Domingo snapped pictures in a fuzzy green photo cube, while other guests admired the sleek design of Bottegaâs new 101 Greene Street location.
Before long, the champagne turned into martinis, and the eveningâs mingling came to a close. But in true Interview fashion, the festivities didnât stop in SoHo. Donning a creamsicle-colored Bottega number, Selah Marley, along with other select guestsâDara Allen and A$AP Ferg among themâmade their way to Saint Theoâs, the West Village hotspot, for an intimate Italian dinner. Among those in attendance was Lil Kim, who arrived to a frenzy of paparazzi in a head-to-toe feather ensemble. Our Queen Mother spent the evening cozied up with Interviewâs editor-in-chief Mel Ottenberg, and became fast friends with Richie Shazam, who was praised by fellow guests for her work on our Winter 2021 cover shoot. Also on the list was the icon (and Interview 1973 cover star) Lauren Hutton, whose signature American Gigolo look transformed Bottega Venetaâs woven Pouch bag into an it-girl staple. Hutton chatted the night away with Tommy Dorfman, who dazzled in a turquoise trench, while the Papi Juice trio sipped champagne decked out in Bottega green. Moses Sumney, whose new album, Live from Blackalachia, is out today, caught up with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, whoâmight we addâlooked just as chic in his blazer-and-turtleneck ensemble as he did in our Spring 2020 issue. As the night wound down, Scott Ewalt, the downtown DJ legend, traded his signature rock n roll set for obscure disco christmas hits, prompting guests to hum âDeck the Hallsâ as they bundled up for the walk home. Below, take a peek at the eveningâs festivities.
