About the track:
The video for Prince’s cover of The Stylistics’ “Betcha by Golly Wow!” captures a bittersweet time in the artist’s life. It was created around the time that he learned that his new wife, Mayte Garcia, was pregnant, and it depicts Prince rushing to the hospital to join Mayte and celebrate the happy news.

Tragically, Prince and Mayte’s baby would pass away shortly after being born in the fall of 1996, at the same time that Prince (then identified only by his unpronounceable symbol) was emerging as an independent artist with his ambitious triple album, Emancipation. Many of the songs from Emancipation find Prince reflecting on this tender period of personal transformation and examining his new role as husband and father, including “Let’s Have a Baby,” “Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife,” and a selection of covers like “Betcha By Golly Wow!”

As Prince says during the spoken-word interlude of the song, “Baby, sometimes a man can’t find words to express all the things he feels inside / But every just so often, the words of another who’s truly in love seem to work out fine.”

“Betcha by Golly Wow!” was the first single to be released from Emancipation. The video was shot on set at Paisley Park in October 1996, and stars Prince, Mayte, a cast of dancers, and the 19-year-old gymnast Dominique Dawes, who had just received a gold medal at the Summer Olympics as part of the women’s team known as “The Magnificent Seven.”

Years later, Dominique Dawes would look back fondly on the three days she spent at Paisley Park with Prince shooting the video, and how welcoming he was to her — going so far as to personally mix her a cup of hot cocoa when she arrived. “He took me to his kitchen, and he literally was mixing me up Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate. You’re thinking, doesn’t he have people to do that?” she told NBC Sports. “I can’t say just how talented and how kind he was. He was like any other person, just down to earth.”

How Does the Omicron Variant Affect Indoor Dining in NYC?

0

Here is a sentence I did not think I’d necessarily have to type again: Infection numbers are creeping up in New York City, and officials are concerned about a new variant that could arrive in the United States very soon. (If it hasn’t already.) (Which it very likely has.)

These two factors combined, plus an inevitable seasonal COVID uptick — happy holidays! — may put an end to whatever sense of calm you were feeling about the idea of indoor dining. Or maybe you were already avoiding indoor dining for any number of reasons and this only serves to reinforce your existing concerns.

On the other hand: It is now officially cold. This is normal, obviously, and historically, it has been no problem: When it is cold outside, what you do is go inside, where it is warm. The threat of COVID made indoor dining impossible last winter — “There is no bad weather, only bad clothing!” we chattered while slurping bouillabaisse in yurts — but this year was supposed to be different. We are double-vaxxed and triple-vaxxed and we are ready for this. The outlook had been … almost normal?

And, to be sure, plenty of people are still happily dining indoors. Maybe you are one of them, or you want to be one of them. But should you be?

Pro: Indoors is warm.
Dining is supposed to be pleasant. From now until May, it will be more pleasant inside than out.

Con: But outdoors is still warmish.
A lot of restaurateurs have gone to great lengths to winterize their outdoor setups. Barring extreme cold and/or precipitation, isn’t it your civic duty, in a way, to bask in all that new electric heat?

Pro: Vaccines!
Right now in New York City, everyone inside restaurants is vaccinated by law, at least in theory. This is no guarantee against infection, but it does improve the odds in your favor by a significant margin. And it is heartening to see that restaurant staff members appear to be taking this mandate seriously, often double-checking vaccine cards and Excelsior passes against photo IDs. And this program (the so-called “Key to NYC”) isn’t going anywhere.

Con: Omicron.
Omicron is, you already know, a new COVID “variant of concern.” What does this mean? Nobody really knows yet! We don’t know how transmissible it is, or how well vaccines work against it, or how sick it can make the people it infects. While there are no confirmed cases yet in the United States, experts (and common sense) will tell you that it’s only a matter of time until that changes.

Pro: There’s no reason to assume the worst.
Viruses mutate. We knew that. That doesn’t necessarily mean this particular mutation is a crisis. At the moment, “there’s no evidence that Omicron causes more severe disease than previous variants,” the New York Times reported this past weekend. And, as the Times’ David Leonhardt wrote yesterday, “Assuming the worst about each worrisome new variant is not a science-based, rational response.” But it is an exhausting response. “Absent new evidence,” Leonhardt concluded, “the rational assumption is that Covid is likely to remain overwhelmingly mild among the vaccinated.”

Con: It’s time for the winter spike.
Even before omicron, experts were bracing for cases to rise once temperatures fell. Nobody is predicting the catastrophic pre-vaxx death toll of last winter, but people will be inside more once it gets colder. They’ll travel for the holidays. There’s some reason to believe COVID is at least somewhat seasonal, like the flu, and it is flu season. And now another variant? You could eat inside, but could you enjoy it? If you’re going to be ambiently anxious, you can do that at home.

Pro: It’s time.
We cannot live in a state of suspended animation forever. COVID exists; by getting vaccinated, we’re doing what we can; and, barring extenuating circumstances (or young children), what, at this point, are we waiting for? There’s a risk of breakthrough infections, but the benefit — having a normal social experience in a temperature-controlled environment — is not nothing. Hasn’t it been nice seeing your friends? And there are additional steps to take: In her Substack this weekend, Your Local Epidemiologist Katelyn Jetelina advised, “Use masks. Test if you have symptoms. Isolate if positive. Get vaccinated. Get boosted.” Lastly, many restaurants are reasonably well ventilated. Go to those.

Con: But you could also still wait.
There’s a lot we don’t know about this variant, but scientists are working on it. It will take weeks for researchers to learn more about how Omicron works, and then we’ll be able to make more informed decisions. We’re almost two years into this — at this point, what’s a few more weeks if it means peace of mind?

The Verdict
In keeping with the general theme of the past two years, there is no good answer. If you were comfortable eating inside before omicron, you can continue doing that for now. If the idea of being outdoors in a heavy coat and under a heater makes you more comfortable, that’s still an option. And if you’d rather just stay home and minimize any risk of exposure, Grub Street recommends the new season of Peacock’s Saved By the Bell reboot, a show that is, against almost all possible odds, quite entertaining.

BREAK ON THROUGH (Mafia Kingdom #3) by JESSICA RUBEN

0

“I’m not a good man, and I have nothing to give a woman like you. My heart, at this point, is ice. But while you’re with me, I will protect you like my own. And when this is done, you’ll be free.”

Break on Through is the third book in the Mafia Kingdom series, and each book can be read as a standalone. We’ve really been enjoying this series – firstly with Light My Fire, then Love Her Madly, and now Talia and Leo’s enemies to lovers, arranged marriage mafia romance in Book #3.

After being deceived in a horribly cruel way by his Mum and twin brother, Leo finds himself a long way from his Kosovo home, alone in New York – jobless and homeless, desperate to make something of himself and exact revenge on those responsible for his predicament.

‘It happened to me once in the greatest way possible, but I won’t be made into the fool again.’

A chance meeting would see him become a successful member of the Mafia Sqiptare, a made man in his own right, though three years down the track, Leo’s thirst for revenge on his brother, and those who deceived him is still first and foremost on his mind. He’s angry and won’t rest until he has put the wrongs enacted on him, to right.

‘Young or old, deception and lies are not tolerable.’

The promise of $5 million dollars is enough to convince Talia Mizrani to agree (though, she didn’t really have much say in it) to an arranged marriage with Leo. Talia, a talented music student who dreams of playing for the New York Philharmonic orchestra, needs money for schooling. This is the perfect opportunity for her, as Leo agrees that once his plan is completed, he agrees to allow her to divorce him. But we all know what happens when the heart gets involved!

‘Upsettingly beautiful. Her dark eyes are nothing short of overpowering.’

Break on Through was a somewhat tame addition to Jessica Reuben’s mafia romance series in comparison to the previous books -but nevertheless- we enjoyed it! Low-level angst told in dual POV it was an entertaining -easy to read- enemies to lovers, arranged marriage romance in which the author dealt with the themes beautifully. The growth of both Leo and Talia was apparent throughout the story, and we loved how fierce Talia was!

Chucky Season 1 Episode 8 Recap & Analysis: An Affair To Dismember

0

It all comes down to this; in “An Affair To Dismember,” the seven-episode journey Chucky has taken fans on came to a head. Along the way, viewers have seen everything from clever kills to emotional character moments that filled the series with plenty of unexpected heart. Last time around, we argued that the show has struggled to balance its focus on new characters and its utilization of the franchise’s past. It was fair to hope that the season finale would finally find a solid middle ground between the two, and in the end, it delivered the best compromise hardcore fans and casual viewers alike could hope for.

From start to finish, characters from the past and present play meaningful parts in the story, both to help Chucky’s evil plot and to hurt it. As seen in the previous episode, Charles Lee Ray’s mission is centered around his ability to splinter his soul into multiple bodies. In fact, he intends to branch out into dozens of Good Guy dolls in order to produce an army of evil killing machines. This time around, the viewer gets a much-needed explanation as to how Charles can do such a thing. (Nica Pierce is an exception to the rule; otherwise, his spirit can only enter identical Good Guy dolls.) For a franchise that’s admittedly based on a bizarre concept to begin with, lumping another method to the madness into the mix is not a big ask. Instead, giving fans a clearer picture of the mythos makes the show stronger as a whole.

One of the best aspects of the finale has nothing to do with the episode itself; the day before the show aired, Chucky was greenlit for a second season. So this eighth episode had the chance to plant some seeds for the future. Most notably, it establishes a new potential antagonist moving forward. When Andy Barclay first arrived in the series, it seemed like he was destined for one final showdown with Chucky, and he gets it here. Kind of. He helps save Devon from Chucky’s clutches before the franchise OG is seemingly killed off. Andy comes back near the end of the episode, and he initially helps Jake and his friends save the day. But the surprising return of another familiar face derails his intent to stop Chucky once and for all. With a gun pointed at him, Andy gets roped into the doll’s vile scheme against his will.

RELATED: Chucky Season 1 Episode 7 Recap & Analysis: Twice the Grieving, Double the Loss

The last time we see Andy, he’s literally riding off into the sunset, not as a hero, but as an unwilling accomplice that might be forced to help Charles carry out his vision after all. This visual, along with previous teases that Andy might not purely be a good guy beneath the surface, leads the viewer to wonder if he might ultimately turn to the dark side. If so, he’d be a compelling villain for the second season, as he knows Chucky better than anybody. Jake and his friends barely stopped the doll this round; with Andy potentially on his side, Chucky might just be unstoppable.

For now, let’s focus on the present and the way Chucky‘s season finale executed the specific story that kicked off in the pilot. In the first episode, the show set Jake up as a killer-to-be, as he was clearly ripe for the picking for someone like Chucky to give him one final push toward madness. Since then, viewers have seen Jake come frighteningly close to giving in and unleashing his inner monster. But eventually, he defied the killer doll’s manipulation; powered by his own desire to be a good person and aided by a budding friendship (and romance) with Devon, Jake finds the strength to do the right thing and fight Chucky.

This arc concludes in “Affair To Dismember,” both as it relates to Jake’s romance with Devon and his battle with Chucky. Jake and Devon finally kiss, and in the final showdown (for now) between the doll and his former owner, Jake ironically shows Chucky the killer he always thought the boy was. At the climax of a fight between the two, Jake brutally squeezes Chucky until his eyes pop out of his head. Here, it’s clear that Jake has embraced exactly who he is, warts and all, and that’s a powerful message to send. But any celebration of his victory over Chucky won’t last long; with the knowledge that the series will return for a second season, viewers know that it’s only a matter of time before Charles seeks revenge as he always does.

All in all, “An Affair To Dismember” wraps up Chucky‘s first season. It doesn’t conclude the story in a neat little bow, but that’s most definitely a good thing. By leaving distinct loose threads at the end of this episode, the series leaves the fans eagerly waiting for the next adventures of Jake, Charles Lee Ray, and this colorful cast of characters. In the moment, this finale successfully closes up the opening season and sets the stage for what promises to be an equally captivating future.

R.I.P. Teena Marie – My Tribute

26

Gone but never forgotten.

It has been confirmed Teena Marie was found dead today (Sunday Dec 26, 2010), apparently having died in her sleep.

R&B singer and songwriter Teena Marie, best known for the hit 1980s singles “Lovergirl” and “Ooo La La La,” died at her home in Los Angeles on Sunday, according to news reports. She was 54.

The cause of death was not known, and a spokeswoman was not immediately available for comment. Her friend, percussionist Sheila E, reported on Twitter that Teena Marie had a history of seizures.

Teena Marie, whose real name was Mary Brockert, was one of the rare white performers to enjoy crossover success on America’s black music charts.

A protegee of funk singer Rick James, she signed with Motown Records in 1975 and released her first album four years later. That album, which was mostly written by James, led fans to believe that Teena Marie was black since it did not feature a picture of her. Her duet with James on “I’m a Sucker For You” peaked at No. 8 on Billboard’s Black Singles chart.

“I’ve always been accepted by the black community and I think that’s a beautiful thing,” Teena Marie told Jet magazine in 2006.

She released 13 albums up to 2009’s “Conga Square,” on which she paid tribute to jazz influences, such as Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday.

Teena Marie’s career had been on the upswing since 2004 when she signed with a New Orleans rap label and released her first album in a decade. “La Dona” debuted and peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200, the first time she had ever cracked the top 20. A song from the album, “Still in Love,” took her onto the Hot 100 singles chart for the first time since 1988.

Two of her albums, 1981’s “It Must Be Magic” and 1984’s “Starchild,” went gold for U.S. shipments in excess of 500,000 units each, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. The latter album, released after she left Motown in the wake of a legal battle, spawned the tune “Lovergirl,” which hit No. 4 on the Hot 100. “Ooo La La La,” meanwhile, went to No. 1 on the black singles chart in 1988.

Teena Marie is survived by a daughter, Alia Rose.
