Gared O’Donnell, Planes Mistaken for Stars Singer, Dies at 44

0

Gared O’Donnell, the singer of post-hardcore band Planes Mistaken for Stars, has died. He was 44. The band shared the news in a social media post.

In August 2020, O’Donnell revealed he had Stage 3 esophageal cancer.

“It is impossible to express the depth of sorrow in which we must announce that Gared O’Donnell, our brother, our leader, our captain, who has done more to cultivate love and light in this world than any of us can understand, has moved on from his physical form here with us and crossed the rainbow bridge into the eternal ether. In his final days/hours, he was surrounded by the love of his family, his friends, his bandmates, and many others from afar,” the statement said.

O’Donnell joined forces with guitarist Mat Bellinger, drummer Mike Ricketts, and bassist Aaron Wise to form the band in 1997. The Peoria, Illinois band released their debut, Fuck With Fire, in 2001 and Up in Them Guts in 2004. Planes Mistaken for Stars’ last album was released in 2016. However, in their statement, the surviving members said they were working on new material.

“Gared spent the last year of his life doing exactly what he loved, writing and recording music,” the band continued in their statement. “We are currently working hard to bring these multiple final projects to completion. It is heartbreaking to do this without him, but we know that he would want for us to complete what we had started together. We will do our absolute best to honor his legacy and spread word of the legend that he embodied.”

Agi’s Counter and Dacha Specialize in European Comfort Food

0

A line of customers stretches out the door and onto Franklin Avenue in Crown Heights. It’s the first Sunday in business for the new cafĂ© Agi’s Counter, where the food is inspired by Eastern Europe (and, more specifically, Hungary), and the space is packed. Maybe you stop into Agi’s for a cup of coffee, but you haven’t had breakfast yet and the pogača — a biscuit with fried egg and dill — looks too good to pass up, but you switch things up at the last second and go with the sausage. Then you realize you want something sweet, and the chocolate-y Gerbeaud cake catches your eye, but you land on the black-cardamom upside-down pineapple cake instead. When you’re finally ready to leave, you grab a couple of shortbread cookies with caraway that you say you’ll share with somebody else, but you eat them all as you walk away.

Agi, if you’re wondering, is the grandmother of chef Jeremy Salamon, who opened his cafĂ© after a string of pop-ups. During its first week in business, it felt like the entire neighborhood has stopped in to check it out. Jessica and Trina Quinn are also here on this first Sunday, and they’ve already visited three or four times before. The Quinns serve Eastern Europe food at their own project, Dacha 46, with a heavy influence from Jessica’s ancestral homelands of Latvia and Ukraine. When Salamon walks over to say hello, Jessica pulls out housewarming gifts: a tin of cookies and a box of Ferrero Rocher chocolates wrapped in gold foil. If you are an immigrant or first-generation American, you probably know that these two gifts carry some significant cultural meaning.

The Quinns tell me that as soon as they heard what Salamon was planning, they felt an immediate kinship, and it’s hard to miss the overlaps between Dacha and Agi’s: Hungary shares a border with Ukraine, where half of Jessica’s family originates. They’ve both found success with crowdfunding: Agi’s raised $66,000 from 227 backers, while Dacha secured $45,000 in funding to help secure a commercial space where they plan to launch their catering business and also turn out frozen pelmeni. And both projects demonstrate that there is an audience for this type of cooking that reaches beyond the city’s traditional enclaves.

New Yorkers know that Greenpoint is a good bet for Polish cooking; Long Island City has a Romanian population that’s propped up a few butcher shops and other places that bring them a taste of home; if you want Bosnian food then you get to Astoria; and if you want Russian, then you get on the Q and go down to Brighton Beach. Even as the city tends to cycle through various trends pulled from the cuisine of other countries — yakitori, regional pastas, Korean tabletop grilling, countless others — the food from this particular part of the world remained regional, and fans had to travel.

As a territory, Eastern Europe takes up nearly 40 percent of the continent’s land, however it’s difficult to pinpoint what is truly “Eastern European” and what isn’t. Some will tell you it comes down to simple geography. Others might say that countries dominated by Catholic or Protestant churches, like Hungary or Poland, are more Western; while Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Armenia, and countries where Orthodox Christian churches predominate are Eastern. And when you consider all the changes that have occurred in the region, and all the different groups living there, you can end up in an entirely different conversation. So we can’t say that Eastern European food is trending or having a moment or whatever because what would that even mean? What we can say instead is that the story of Agi’s Counter begins in Hungary, when the real Agi fled during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, wearing a second-hand mink coat and subsisting on lemons until she arrived in Austria at the Hotel Sacher. “She said for being such a sour journey,” Salamon laughs, “it ended up sweet.”

Salamon grew up eating the traditional dishes that people tend to recognize — chicken paprikash, goulash — but after he came across a copy of George Lang’s 1971 book The Cuisine of Hungary, he was inspired to take a trip to Hungary, staying with relatives for three months and learning everything he could. When he returned, he started hosting pop-ups around the city. Eventually, Salamon followed his boyfriend Michael to Los Angeles, and worked out a business plan for his dream space. The one problem was that the idea didn’t feel right for L.A. So the couple moved back east. Salamon next launched his Kickstarter. “I was nauseous the whole time,” he recalls. Once funded, Salamon got to work on the space at 818 Franklin Avenue, which had previously been home to Butter & Scotch, the bakery and bar that was, coincidentally, the first place Salamon hosted his pop-up.

There is something inspiring about the various roads Salamon took to end up back where he started, cooking the sort of food his ancestors may have eaten, even if all is not well in his family’s homeland. This past summer, in what is becoming a frightening trend in the region, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán passed a law that bans any content featuring or about LGBTQ people in school material or television shows for people under 18. The law passing came weeks after Czech president Milos Zeman called transgender people “disgusting” in an interview. In Poland, a number of of municipalities have created “LGBT ideology-free zones,” while Russia passed legislation outlawing “homosexual propaganda” in 2013.

The region’s history of discrimination isn’t lost on Salamon or the Quinns. “We talk about that a lot,” says Jessica, who tells me that, growing up on Long Island, she sometimes thought she was the one gay Russian person in the world. Dacha 46 is designed to be a celebration of her identity and her culture, and she remembers a moment when she realized her experience wasn’t entirely unique. “There was a young trans man who brought his grandmother who was clearly born in like the Soviet Union to our pop-up and they were bonding over our food,” Jessica says. “I almost broke into tears — it was the first time where I fully understood the extent of what we were doing.”

The phrase “comfort food” means something different for everyone. And while I don’t have the hard numbers to back this up, I suspect that for most people, there is a strong connection to the food that their own grandparents ate or prepared. Sitting with the Quinns at a table in the back of Agi’s, I found myself thinking about my own family’s history, scattered across the region, and why this kind of cooking appears to resonate with so many people right now. The food is delicious, but that’s always been the case — so what’s different at this particular moment in time?

“Eastern Europeans have been training for this their entire lives,” Jessica offers. “It’s our time to shine.” What she’s talking about is
everything: the political unrest, the lingering pandemic, the veritable elimination of an economic middle class. Shit kinda sucks right now, in other words. Put a finger anywhere on a map of Europe’s Eastern half, and you’ll likely land on a place that has, at some point in history, been affected by any of those scenarios, maybe on multiple occasions. It’s a part of the world that’s filled with contradictions and strife and violence aimed at one group, and then another; the cycle doesn’t end.

Nobody knows what tomorrow will bring, of course. When things are tense — and let’s be honest: Things are tense — fear of the unknown can be overwhelming. Even if you’ve never had palacsinta, you can probably find some relief, however temporary, in a sweet, cheese-filled crĂȘpe that’s dusted with powdered sugar. At the very least, it helps take the edge off.

Hawkeye Season 1 Episode 1 Recap & Analysis: ‘Never Meet Your Heroes’

0

Retractable sword! Crumbling bell tower! Illegal auction in a wine cellar! Not exactly the first thing you think of when the sharpshooter Hawkeye gets his own Disney+ show. Marvel’s latest entry into episodic storytelling follows the bright-eyed Kate Bishop as she navigates a new vigilante life along with the retired Avenger as he attempts to get back to his family before Christmas. Needless to say, this Hawkeye Season 1 Episode 1 recap includes spoilers for both the show and related films.

RELATED: Hawkeye Episodes 1 & 2 Review: A Fun Watch for the Holiday Season

As a quick recap of our own, titular character Clint Barton’s appearances throughout the MCU are pretty numerous and it’s worth checking in on the films he has had a major role in. First shown targeting the God of Thunder in the first Thor movie, Hawkeye got a major role acting as a brainwashed antagonist in The Avengers before fighting alongside our original group of heroes in the Battle of New York. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, a now-retired Hawkeye is shown to have a family, one he loses to the Thanos snap in the next film. But it’s all good! He gets his family back in Avengers: Endgame and now he even has his own show. Of course, the death of his best friend and trusted partner Black Widow is still fresh and the aftermath is left largely unexplored.

The Origins of a Hero

Flashback time! It’s 2012, we’re in New York, and a young Kate Bishop is listening in on her parents arguing over their living situation and the like. A quick heart-to-heart with her father and a successful attempt of a mother connecting with her daughter and we’re met with explosions outside the luxurious apartment. Yup, we’re in the midst of the Chitauri Invasion, the battle that brought the Avengers together. A frantic Kate is nearly toasted from an incoming attack, but a save from none other than Hawkeye creates an idol in her eyes.

Not everyone was so lucky. While Kate’s mother, Eleanor, was able to swoop in and take Kate out of the crumbling building, her father was, unfortunately, a casualty. The two mourn their loss at the funeral and Kate’s newfound strength is born when she asks for a bow and arrow.

Present Day – Kate

Who wouldn’t want to snipe the bell tower in the midst of a snowy winter night if you possessed the incredible ability to do so? That’s exactly what Kate, now an adult, is up to. Before getting caught, she causes the bell to crash down right through the tower.

Later, Kate arrives at her mother’s place where word of the bell tower’s demise has more than reached parental ears. It’s a large bill to get that fixed, but not to worry! The Bishops are quite wealthy. Before both Kate and her mother head off to a charity auction, a man by the name of Jake enters the room, much to Kate’s dissatisfaction.

At the auction, a tuxedo-wearing Kate chats it up with the rich bigwig Armand who reveals Eleanor and Jack are getting married. Lots of characters not being pleased with new information so far! After a not too thrilled Kate confronts her mother, she takes a step outside where she spots a curious dog. Random, but will be important later!

Back inside, Kate is back to her old habits of eavesdropping on her mother and Armand during a tense conversation. Conveniently dressed as someone easily mistaken as a waitress, Kate follows Armand down into a wine cellar where a secret auction is taking place. First up, a massive skull! After a run-in with the head waiter, Kate manages to maneuver her way out from suspicion. She spies a few Russian-speaking lads doing something shady in the next room, then she gets back to the auction where Amrad and Jack are bidding for a retractable Ronin sword.

Just as the Ronin suit is set up as the next item, an explosion tears down a nearby wall sending the entire wine cellar into chaos. Amid the panic, Jack swipes the sword off the floor and Kate grabs hold of the Ronin suit. As masked men point their guns at Armand and Jack, a suited and hooded Kate starts flying around taking out foes one by one. Escaping through the newly formed hole in the wall, Kate gets outside where that rascal of a dog from earlier is tugging at the leg of the getaway driver. Kate chases the big pupper out into the busy streets where she saves him from incoming traffic. Clearly a hero.

Present Day – Clint

Elsewhere, the Rodgers musical depicting the events of the first Avengers movie is in full effect and who else is in the crowd other than Clint Barton and his family? After pointing out a few inconsistencies like the inclusion of Ant-Man, a daunting close-up of the Black Widow actress sends Clint into a state that gets him to walk out of the theater. Clint, now sporting a new hearing aid, has a sweet moment with his daughter who knows what’s up. The rest of the family piles out and they leave the musical halfway through for some good grub. At dinner, a phone call with mom is followed up by the waiter letting the Bartons know that their meal was on the house. Clint was not pleased.

Towards the end of the episode, the family returns to their hotel where they plan to pack to make it back home for Christmas. A news report covers the explosion at the charity gala and also shows a glimpse of Kate in the Ronin suit. What’s this? Clint is troubled? Ah, that’s right. While his family was snapped out of existence, Hawkeye went on a different vigilante route as the masked Ronin.

A Meeting of Two Archers

Back at her apartment, Kate feeds her newfound companion with a scrumptious slice of leftover pizza. Her night’s not over. Kate breaks into Armand’s manor to look for more clues. She got a clue alright! Armand’s dead body is laying under a pool of blood on the living room rug. Kate books it out of there before the arriving maid sees the scene of the crime.

Outside once more, Kate is cornered by the group of hoodlums keeping watch since she ruined the robbery at the gala. After getting cornered inside a car, a mysterious force appears to stop the thugs from crashing through the windows. And look at that, it’s Clint! He grabs her out of the car and rips off the mask. She knows him but he doesn’t know her. And that’s a wrap!

Things are moving quickly in the world of Hawkeye and the Disney+ exclusive show will release each of its six episodes on a weekly basis. Catch each episode of Hawkeye, along with our detailed recap, every Wednesday.

Planes Mistaken for Stars’ Gared O’Donnell Dead at 44

0

Gared O’Donnell, singer and guitarist for the influential post-hardcore band Planes Mistaken for Stars, died on November 24 following a battle with cancer. He was 44 years old. The band confirmed the news on Instagram, writing, “It is impossible to express the depth of sorrow in which we must announce that Gared O’Donnell, our brother, our leader, our captain, who has done more to cultivate love and light in this world than any of us can understand, has moved on from his physical form here with us and crossed the rainbow bridge into the eternal ether. In his final days/hours, he was surrounded by the love of his family, his friends, his bandmates, and many others from afar.”

In August 2020, O’Donnell announced that he had been diagnosed with Stage 3 esophageal cancer. In a statement and GoFundMe campaign launched with the announcement, the band’s manager Emily Francis said that the cancer was inoperable.

In 1997, O’Donnell co-founded Planes Mistaken for Stars in Peoria, Illinois, alongside guitarist Mat Bellinger, drummer Mike Ricketts, and bassist Aaron Wise. After releasing a self-titled EP and a 7-inch, the band relocated to Denver, Colorado. They issued their debut album Fuck With Fire on No Idea Records in 2001, following it in 2004 with Up in Them Guts.

After releasing their third album Mercy in 2006, the group disbanded until 2010, at which point they resumed occasional touring. O’Donnell’s final album with the group was their fourth record, Prey, released in 2016.

In their statement, Planes Mistaken for Stars revealed that O’Donnell was working on new music in private and they hope to share it in the future. “Gared spent the last year of his life doing exactly what he loved, writing and recording music,” the band’s statement continues. “We are currently working hard to bring these multiple final projects to completion. It is heartbreaking to do this without him, but we know that he would want for us to complete what we had started together. We will do our absolute best to honor his legacy and spread word of the legend that he embodied.”
