Plant Power Fast Food, one of the country’s leading 100% plant-based fast-food chains, has announced the opening of its new flagship Las Vegas location.

Located at the intersection of Interstate 95 and Craig Road in North Las Vegas, Plant Power’s first location outside of California features a stunning mid-century modern design atmosphere with indoor and outdoor dining, airy floor-to-ceiling windows, a convenient drive-thru and both traditional counter service and a self-order kiosk. 

Plant Power Fast Food began with one store in San Diego in 2016 and a commitment to offering delicious, plant-based versions of traditional fast-food fare like burgers, fries, shakes and “chicken” tenders. Their menu also includes fresh juices, salads desserts and a children’s menu.

This new location in Las Vegas is Plant Power’s 10th and the chain has four more locations in active development including a flagship restaurant in Hollywood near the Paramount Studios lot scheduled to open this December. The Las Vegas location debuted on October 15th to the highest grossing Opening Day in the chain’s history.

In keeping with the company’s strategy to leverage both corporate and franchise development in order to accelerate growth, the new Las Vegas location is a partnership with Scale x 3 Management, a hospitality and commercial retail real estate group founded by experienced restaurateurs Randy Corrigan, Barry Tu and McKenzie Cox. Plant Power President and Chief Operating Officer Zach Vouga discusses the partnership by stating, “Scale x 3 embodies everything we’d hoped for in a franchisee, both in terms of their commitment to the mission and also the experience and infrastructure required to operate a high-volume concept like Plant Power Fast Food.”

Plant Power Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Harris feels that a rapidly evolving consumer is looking for something more than the one or two plant-based options currently being offered at many fast-food establishments. “We’re grateful to see major chains adding plant-based options to their menus, but there’s no doubt that consumers are seeking out progressive new brands with an authentic commitment to taste and sustainability,” states Harris. “The massive growth that we’ve experienced since we started in 2016 is proof that the time is right for a major 100% plant-based, cruelty-free, sustainable and healthier option in the fast-food segment.”

Ryan Gosling Joins Margot Robbie in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie Film as Ken

Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling (La La Land) is set to star in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie film as Ken, according to Deadline. The actor is reportedly in final negotiations to play the Mattel character in the Warner Bros. feature that is being directed by the Oscar-nominated Gerwig (Lady Bird) who co-wrote the screenplay with long-time partner, collaborator, and fellow Oscar nominee Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story).

Based on Mattel’s popular doll, the live-action Barbie movie will be led by Oscar nominee Margot Robbie (I, Tonya, The Suicide Squad), who is also serving as a producer through her LuckyChap banner. Further details about its plot and characters are still being kept under wraps, but production is expected to finally begin in early next year at Warner Bros.’ Leavesden Studios in London. The studio is reportedly planning to release the film in 2023.

The film will also be produced by LuckyChap’s Tom Ackerly and Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner and David Heyman along with LuckyChap’s Josey McNamara and Mattel’s Ynon Kreiz. This marks Robbie’s latest collaboration with Warner Bros. Pictures after starring as fan-favorite anti-hero Harley Quinn in 2016’s Suicide Squad, 2020’s Birds of Prey, and this year’s The Suicide Squad.

Barbie was originally being developed at Sony for the last few years, with Amy Schumer and then Anne Hathaway both initially in talks to star in the movie, while Diablo Cody was also previously attached to write. New Artist Spotlight: Mother Ghost Release Debut Album in the Face of Tragedy [Geodesic Records] [Video]

It’s fun in 2021 to see the spirit and sounds of post punk wending their way into modern electronica and, in addition to their name having a sort of “Spooky Mother Goose” vibe, Mother Ghost is definitely channeling the likes of Ian Curtis and Bauhaus into their debut album, Somnámbulo. With industrial-style synths, experimental composition styles and political, evocative vocals, the album, released last month, deigns to take post punk into the 21st century. But it almost didn’t happen.

While sifting through some already heavy material such as the viscerally-titled, Trump-inspired song “Hiding in a Dumpster Waiting for ICE Agents to Leave” and the emotionally-charged “Le Petite Mort,” tragedy struck the project when James Vehslage, the producer who was working on Somnámbulo with Oscar and Thomas Flores, unexpectedly died.

The duo thought the Vehslage mixes were all but lost and resigned themselves to not release the album, but family members of James managed to get the music back to the brothers and urged them to finish it. They reached out to Geodesic Records and their producer aCr to help finish and master the album and now, after personal tragedy and COVID, Somnåmbulo is out and it seems it was well worth the wait.

Don’t get us wrong: Somnámbulo is not an easy listen. It wasn’t designed to be. Even without all the Trump/COVID/personal turmoil the Flores boys have been through in the past five years or so, this album is meant to challenge listeners both sonically and emotionally. The politically almost too heavy tracks like the afore-mentioned “Hiding In a Dumpster
,” “Avarice, “Raices” and “Criminal” would, based on the music, be just as intense without the loud, often screamed vocals. Complex polyrhythms in the drums, relentless, Tom Morello-style guitars and punishing, industrial-style synths make these tracks absolute jaw-clenchers, but that’s the point. The chaos in the tracks mirrors the chaos of the Latino experience during those years. It’s meant to he conflicted, and the duo more than pull it off.

The more melodic tracks on Somnámbulo, like the title track, “Ungrateful” and “White God” also require a lot of attention from the listener, but in a different way. The tones and harmonies, all of a haunting and minor-keyed timbre, sort of pang at the heart in a way that’s not unpleasant but would never be categorized as “feel-good.” This is typical of post punk but really not since the 80s and early 90s has the genre seen this sort of blunt force heart punch as an emotive tactic. It’s heavy, strange and beautiful and it’s long overdue in modern electronica.

The story of Somnámbulo would have been a sad one if Mother Ghost had decided not to finally release it, but now it’s a tribute. Already a complex and poignant watchword of the times in which it was being made, it’s now a way to carry on James Vehslage’s work and legacy. This emotive think piece of an album helps ensure that while Bela Lugosi may be dead, post punk certainly isn’t.
