What’s This TV Show About?

Streaming on the Apple TV+ subscription service, the Foundation TV show is based on Isaac Asimov’s book trilogy of the same name. It stars Jared Harris, Lee Pace, Lou Llobell, Leah Harvey, Laura Birn, Cassian Bilton, Terrence Mann, and Alfred Enoch. When revolutionary Dr. Hari Seldon (Harris) predicts the impending fall of the Galactic Empire, he and a band of loyal followers venture to the far reaches of the galaxy. Their goal is to establish The Foundation in an attempt to rebuild and preserve the future of civilization. Enraged by Hari’s claims, the ruling Cleons — a long line of emperor clones — fear their unrivaled reign may be weakening as they’re forced to reckon with the potential reality of losing their powerful legacy forever.

Telly’s Take

Unless they decide to publicize viewership, it is difficult to predict whether Apple TV+ will cancel or renew Foundation for season two. Since Apple TV+ isn’t ad-supported, it can take a chance on series it believes in but sooner or later it comes down to production costs, versus viewership numbers. Given that this show is based on a well-known and beloved series of books, I believe that Apple will complete this saga. I’ll keep my ears open and an eye out for news, and will update this page with breaking developments. Subscribe for free alerts on Foundation cancellation or renewal news.

NYC Passes Landmark Laws to Protect Delivery Workers

The City Council has passed a historic slate of bills meant to improve working conditions for New York City’s delivery workers. It’s a big deal: The package — a direct response to the activism of Los Deliveristas Unidos, a group of mostly immigrant delivery workers — ensures delivery drivers bathroom access and minimum pay per trip, among other long-overdue protections.

“We’ve seen them face everything from COVID-19 exposure to waist-deep flood waters to violent attacks, all in a day’s work,” Councilmember Carlina Rivera, who’s worked closely with Los Deliveristas, told Grub via email before the vote. “The package of bills passing today marks a critical first step toward securing rights, protections, and justice for our delivery workers.”

The measures even had support from at least one major delivery platform: a spokesperson for GrubHub told The City that the company “supports the proposals
that would provide a number of new protections.”

So what are those proposals, exactly, and how do they affect delivery workers? Here’s a breakdown of the basics:

Delivery workers will (finally) be allowed to use the bathroom
During the pandemic, the right to pee became a hot-button issue. Most other bathroom options had evaporated, and yet many restaurants wouldn’t let delivery workers use their bathrooms (even though, one might note, those same delivery workers were a lifeline for restaurants, which for months were prohibited from serving on the premises at all). New York City still won’t have an actual public-bathroom infrastructure, but a bill from Councilmember Rivera requires restaurants to allow delivery workers to use their restrooms as long as they’re picking up an order. Restaurants caught denying workers access will face fines — $50 for the first offense and $100 for every violation after.

There will be minimum per-trip payments
On average, delivery workers earn $7.87 an hour before tips, or about half of the city’s minimum wage, according to a recent report from the Workers’ Justice Project and the Worker Institute at the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell. With tips, that goes up to $12.21 — still well below the minimum. This bill changes that by establishing minimum per-trip payments independent of tips.

Apps will have to tell customers where their tips go
Any app that solicits tips will now be required to disclose to customers exactly where that money goes. That means laying out how much of each tip goes to the delivery worker, in what form it gets to the delivery worker (is it cash?), and whether the tip is paid out immediately.

The apps will also be required to extend that kind of transparency to delivery workers, who will be immediately notified if they’d been tipped, how much they’d been tipped, whether a customer had made changes to an existing tip, and, if a reason was provided, why. Every day, the platforms will now be required to alert workers of their total earnings — in both compensation and gratuities — from the day before.

Payment — and payment schedule — will be more regulated
This one is relatively straightforward: Delivery platforms will no longer be allowed to charge workers any fees to receive wages and tips, will be required to pay workers at least once a week, and are required to offer at least one payment option that doesn’t require a bank account.

Delivery companies will have to provide workers with insulated bags
Those ubiquitous thermal delivery bags? They’re an unofficial job requirement, workers say, and could run them up to $60 out of pocket. Now, though, food-delivery apps will be required to make the insulated bags available to any courier who has completed at least six deliveries for the company, and are prohibited from charging any money for the bags.

Workers can limit their personal delivery zones
The most controversial of the bunch, delivery workers will now be able to set limits on how far they’re willing to travel for a delivery. The’ll also be able specify whether or not they’ll accept trips over bridges and tunnels — known danger zones for e-bike couriers — without penalty.

For Sergio Ajche, a Guatemalan food-delivery worker and organizer with Los Deliveristas, this is only the beginning. “These six bills will help workers, but they’re not enough,” he told The City yesterday. “Only time, each passing day will inform us what else we should change and demand. Every day more delivery workers are getting together and the movement grows. We’re making progress.”

The package now goes to de Blasio — a supporter of the measures — to sign.

Far From Hollywood: New Kinds of Classic Film

Canons of taste and value in other media, such as literature, art and music, have been challenged in recent decades by proponents of sexual and ethnic equality. Film’s ‘ten bests’ are open to similar charges, and their dominance may actively hinder efforts to raise awareness of and achievement by filmmakers outside Hollywood and predominantly European art cinema.

This lecture considers what newly assessed canons might look like.

DEPRAVED: A Sinful Novel (A Sinful Dark Mafia #3) (Dark Mafia #1) by TRILINA PUCCI

0

‘We collect that which we don’t want anyone else to touch. We’re greedy by nature, making sure to possess all the things that elude us, the beautiful treasures we want. Whether its money, power, or women, our nature tells us there’s never enough.’

We picked up Depraved by Trilina Pucci on a whim as we were in the mood for dark mafia with heat and wow we were completely satiated by the end. We’ve never read this Author before but have marked a few of her books to read over the years, now we will definitely be moving these up our to-read list. The writing was suspenseful, dramatic, passionate, humorous, and flawless. We do have to mention that we bought this book as it was listed as book one in a new Dark Mafia series, however, we discovered that it features characters from the Sinful Series in which this one is considered book three.

We have not read the previous two books in the Sinful Series so when we picked up Depraved, we thought it was all brand-new characters and new connections. Did this impact our enjoyment? We have to be honest and say, yes it did a little bit. We felt we’d missed out somewhat. So, if you’re in our position be aware that Depraved is book one in the Dark Mafia series yet book three in the Sinful Series too. If we had our time over, we would have read the Sinful Series first. Can Depraved be read as a standalone? Yes absolutely, however personally, as prolific readers we prefer to know everything that came before when characters’ lives are as entwined as they are in this case. We have to read in order. Despite this though, we truly enjoyed it and were completely compelled by this sexy, dark, crazy ride and we can’t wait for more.

‘Dante has a presence. You can feel him in the room. Everyone can. He’s a dangerous, powerful man
’ “Ask me for help,” he growls, fisting his hands at his sides. He knows I won’t ask. “No. I’d be making a deal with the devil, and you’d want my soul in return.”

Depraved had everything we love, a ruthless arrogant but hot as hell dominant anti-hero, a beautiful, sassy, and fierce heroine who is as bad arse as the man who wants to devour her. Oh, and of course it had an all-consuming dark and gritty mafia storyline! We will without question pick up the next book in this series as well as go back and read the rest of the Sinful Series as we loved how Trilina Pucci managed to give us something new in the mafia world.

‘He holds up his gun and waves it.
“We played a little game of Glock, paper, scissors. Glock beats scissors.”

Depraved is the fiery hot romance between Dante and Sarah. And let us tell you, it’s scorching! The sexual chemistry is on point and the character connection is intense and passionate. There’s obviously quite a bit of history between them but we quickly picked up on the intensity of their need and want. Dante Sovrano is the head of the Chicago mob. He’s not a man you cross without dire consequences. His band of brothers forged in loyalty and protection. Sarah works for Dante and his brothers, managing a classy sex club. She has secrets she won’t share and carries trauma from a horrific past she’s on the run from.

“Love is never a choice. It’s an affliction that you’ll want to die of. And there’s no better love than one from a man who wallows in his devotion to you.”

Suspenseful and fast-paced Depraved by Trilina Pucci kept us riveted. It was high on emotion and had fabulous character relationships. It was all about family, loyalty, secrets, and revenge. It was about love, honour, and payback. A thrilling ride we didn’t want to get off. So, if you love mafia romances like we do, check this Author out!

“You’ve never looked more beautiful,” I say reverently. “Because you choose to sit at my feet when you know that I would be the very ground you walked on if you asked.”

Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack to Include Sega Genesis, N64 Lineup of Games

0

Nintendo shared plenty of gaming news (and one bit of movie news) in its recent Direct, but the console maker also set aside some time to speak about its Nintendo Switch Online service and its imminent expansion. This new tier dubbed “Expansion Pack” will grant access to Nintendo 64 games as well as titles from the Sega Genesis. It’s coming “late October” but no price was given.

RELATED: Kirby and the Forgotten Land Officially Announced, Coming Next Year

Those who already subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online will be able to upgrade their subscription if they want. However, upgrades aren’t mandatory as Expansion Pack is not replacing the base version of Nintendo Switch Online. The new subscription will launch with nine N64 games next month:

  • Super Mario 64
  • Mario Kart 64
  • Star Fox 64
  • Yoshi’s Story
  • The Legends of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  • WinBack
  • Mario Tennis
  • Dr. Mario 64
  • Sin and Punishment

Select titles will be support multiplayer both online and offline for up to four players. Nintendo will also add more titles later and gave The Legends of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Pokémon Snap, F-Zero X, Mario Golf, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Paper Mario, and Banjo-Kazooie as examples of games coming in the future.

RELATED: Bayonetta 3 Returns From Hiatus With New Trailer & Release Window

These nine N64 games will launch alongside the following 14 Genesis games:

  • Castlevania Bloodlines
  • Contra Hard Corps
  • Ecco the Dolphin
  • Golden Axe
  • Gunstar Heroes
  • M.U.S.H.A.
  • Phantasy Star IV
  • Ristar
  • Shinobi III
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • Streets of Rage 2
  • Strider
  • Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
  • Shining Force

The N64, Genesis, and Switch all have drastically different controllers so Nintendo will be selling classic wireless N64 and Genesis pads for $49.99 each. These retro controllers look like their ’90s counterparts and should allow players to more easily control these games with the controllers they were designed for. Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions are, oddly, required to purchase these controllers.

Pressure Machine came out last month. It follows the band’s 2020 LP Imploding the Mirage. The new LP was co-produced by Foxygen’s Jonathan Rado, Shawn Everett, and the Killers frontman Brandon Flowers. It was recorded during the tour-less lull of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier this month, the Killers appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden, where they performed their Pressure Machine track “In Another Life.”
