Lana Del Rey Finds Grace While Searching For ‘Arcadia’
“My body is a map of L.A./ And my heart is like paper, I hate ya,” Lana Del Rey sings in the second verse “Arcadia,” the fourth single from her eighth studio album, Blue Banisters, out October 22nd via UMG. If we as a society have learned anything in the 10-odd years since “Video Games,” it’s that nobody does breakup songs quite like Lana Del Rey. Though just about everyone since has tried.
“Arcadia” is both elegant and elegiac. Over a muted piano, Del Rey sings her origin story with an innocence that recalls Daniel Johnston’s compact masterpiece, “Story Of An Artist.” The way she lets us hear just enough of a quiver feels like an act of surrender for Del Rey. Without the old Hollywood glamor, Del Rey sounds liberated, clear-eyed, and mournful. Del Rey, like her folk forbears Patty Griffin and Joan Baez, does all three at once.
Another thing that separates “Arcadia” from Del Rey’s other sweeping breakup ballads, is that this one is devoid of any of the romantic tropes or characters Del Rey has introduced us to on such songs in the past — face-tattoo guy, creepy convertible guy, The Weeknd. Here, Del Rey is covered in the golden light pouring into her hotel room window, where she dances in blue jeans and a yellow cardigan, blissfully alone.
That’s because “Arcadia” — and its video, which she directed — is about letting us go: “They built me up three hundred feet tall just to tear me down/ So I’m leavin’ with nothing but laughter,” she sings balletically toward the end. “I’m leavin’ them as I was, five foot eight/ Western bound, plus the hate that they gave.”
Before “Arcadia” arrived, Del Rey wrote on her Instagram: “listen to it like you listened to ‘Video Games.’”
If that implies these songs are meant to be understood as bookends, “Arcadia” is an astonishing farewell to an industry that trashed her from the beginning and almost immediately rebuilt itself in her image. There’s no popular artist alive today that doesn’t owe some debt to Del Rey’s artistic vision. Just ask Taylor Swift, who said as much as the 2019 Billboard Music Awards.
But those accolades aren’t the same thing as justice in Del Rey’s mind, as she wrote in an Instagram post leading up to “Arcadia”: “As much as the ongoing criticism has been trying, it at least has pushed me to explore my own family tree, to dig deep, and to continue to exhibit the fact that God only cares about how I move through the world. And for all of the skepticism about feigning fragility and unreasonable explanations of not showing general accountability — I must say I’ve enjoyed moving through the world beautifully — as a woman with grace and dignity.”
Blue Banisters is Del Rey’s second studio album release of the year, following Chemtrails Over The Country Club in March. Pre-order Blue Banisters here.

Lyrics
Love is a stranger
In an open car
To tempt you in
And drive you far away
And I want you
And I want you
And I want you so
It’s an obsession
Love is a danger
Of a different kind
To take you away
And leave you far behind
And love love love
Is a dangerous drug
You have to receive it
And you still can’t
Get enough of the stuff
It’s savage and it’s cruel
And it shines like destruction
Comes in like the flood
And it seems like religion
It’s noble and it’s brutal
It distorts and deranges
And it wrenches you up
And you’re left like a zombie
And I want you
And I want you
And I want you so
It’s an obsession
It’s guilt edged
Glamorous and sleek by design
You know it’s jealous by nature
False and unkind
It’s hard and restrained
And it’s totally cool
It touches and it teases
As you stumble in the debris
And I want you
And I want you
And I want you so
It’s an obsession

KOHANAIKI APPOINTS IAN SCOLLAY AS NEW EXECUTIVE CHEF

Kohanaiki, a private luxury residential development on the Kona Coast of the island of Hawai`i, has announced the appointment of Ian Scollay as Executive Chef. Welcomed on August 15, Scollay arrives from the shores of East Hampton, New York, where he served as Executive Chef at the prestigious Maidstone Club for the past 16 years. Scollay will oversee the entire culinary program at Kohanaiki, including: the club’s beachfront dining venue, The Beach Restaurant; the poolside Beach Bar; the signature clubhouse restaurant, Kōnane. In celebration of his arrival, Scollay recently led Kohanaiki’s Connoisseur’s Dinner on August 27-29.
“In Ian, we have found a chef who is not just remarkable in the kitchen, but also with members. He has a talent for bringing bold and savory flavors to locally sourced cuisine, all while carrying a down-to-earth persona that truly fits in with our community here at the club,” said Aaron Grant, Vice President of Operations at Kohanaiki. “As we prepare for the upcoming season, I know our members will provide him a warm welcome and look forward to learning from him.”
Scollay has visited the Island of Hawai`i frequently over the last 17 years; this new position fulfills his dream to live and work in Hawai`i. Passionate about working in a club community and sharing his creativity and love of food and wine with a closely knit membership, he looks forward to joining the special community at Kohanaiki.
“From the onset of my career, I’ve always relied upon local, in-season ingredients to celebrate nature’s flavors on every plate I create,” said Ian Scollay. “I’m thrilled to now join the `ohana at Kohanaiki, which is not only a world-class club, but also one of the rarest destinations for an enviable bounty of fresh ingredients.”
To create farm-to-table menu experiences for members, Scollay will work closely with Kohanaiki’s farmer, Aaron Shapiro, who manages the onsite two-acre organic community farm, which supplies ingredients ranging from mango, dragonfruit, lilikoi, ginger, lemongrass, herbs and more to the club’s kitchens. Kohanaiki’s ideal location on the famed Ono Lane, hailed as the best scuba diving spot in the world, enables Scollay and the culinary team to source the freshest local fish as the centerpiece for incredible ocean-to-table dishes.
Scollay brings 30 years of experience working in celebrated kitchens in the United States and Europe. Prior to his tenure at the Maidstone Club, he served as Executive Chef at the iconic La Grenouille restaurant in New York City for four years. Raised in London with a long-held dream of becoming a chef, Scollay first earned a degree in hotel management before pursuing his passion for the kitchen. In 1991, he began as a pastry apprentice under the Maitre Cuisinier of France, Michel Bourdin, at London’s famed The Connaught Hotel, and left as a junior sous chef after his five years of hands-on culinary education. Scollay served as Executive Sous Chef at the Ritz Hotel in London, serving illustrious guests, including the Queen of England. Scollay later spent a year in France as Seconde de Cuisine at the famed Château de Bagnols, just outside of Lyon, and considered it his finishing school in French cuisine, before moving to New York City.

BOOKWORM NEWS:
- Chasing Serenity by Kristen Ashley is now live!! — “From a very young age, Chloe Pierce was trained to look after the ones she loved. And she was trained by the best. But when the man who looked after her was no longer there, Chloe is cast adrift—just as the very foundation of her life crumbled to pieces. Then she runs into tall, lanky, unpretentious Judge Oakley, her exact opposite. She shops. He hikes. She drinks pink ladies. He drinks beer. She’s a city girl. He’s a mountain guy. Obviously, this means they have a blowout fight upon meeting. Their second encounter doesn’t go a lot better. Judge is loving the challenge. Chloe is everything he doesn’t want in a woman, but he can’t stop finding ways to spend time with her. He knows she’s dealing with loss and change. He just doesn’t know how deep that goes. Or how ingrained it is for Chloe to care for those who have a place in her heart, how hard it will be to trust anyone to look after her… And how much harder it is when it’s his turn.”
- Hard to Love by K Bromberg is now live!! — “He was the one-night stand that didn’t exactly go as planned. Now he’s standing before me as if he’s never seen me naked, telling my manager he’ll take the job. Reluctantly. Finn Sanderson. Sports agent extraordinaire. Handsome as hell. The man who just signed on to control my every move. Sure, I’m to blame for my recent bad press, but when your whole life has been so regimented, isn’t it normal to want to live it up a little? But when the partying stops and the grief I’m running from has nowhere else to hide, reality sets in. Turns out, Finn’s the only person I have left to help pick up the pieces. The only person to call. Staying with him is a temporary thing. But when our fighting turns into laughter and our friendship turns into something more, will I fight for a man who swears he’s hard to love? Or is it wiser to walk away? To follow the plan?”
- Code Name: Tiara by Sawyer Bennett is now live!! — “I joined Jameson Force Security for three reasons: the missions, the danger, and the money. I definitely didn’t join the team to be an overpriced babysitter for a spoiled princess. Ask anyone who knows me, and they’ll tell you Jackson Gale is an adventurer through and through. Yet here I am, halfway across the world, watching over Princess Camille of the House Winterbourne. Even her name sounds stuck up. After arriving in Bretaria, I realize that Princess Camille is nothing that I expected. Beautiful, smart, and sophisticated, Camille is the very picture of elegance and grace. But under her perfect façade, she is funny, adventurous, sexy as hell, and impossible to resist. And that is a dangerous combination. The closer Camille and I become, the more obvious it is that while she and I are compatible in many ways, our destinies are not. She has a duty to the monarchy, and I’m just an average American who’s fallen for a princess…”
- At First Hate by KA Linde is now live!! — “Derek Ballentine and I have always been on opposite sides of everything. I went to a public Savannah high school. He went to a private Catholic school. I went to Duke on scholarship. He went to UNC as a legacy. When we both end up at Harvard for graduate school and we’re finally on a level playing field, I think it’s all going to change. I was wrong. The only thing that changed was ending up in his bed. Now my grandma has passed away, and Derek is the attorney helping the people trying to steal her legacy. I’ll do anything to stop that from happening. Even take on my lifetime enemy. I hate him at first sight…but I also want him at first hate.”
- Portrait of a Scotsman by Evie Dunmore is now live!! — “London banking heiress Hattie Greenfield wanted just three things in life: 1. Acclaim as an artist. 2. A noble cause. 3. Marriage to a young lord who puts the gentle in gentleman. Why then does this Oxford scholar find herself at the altar with the darkly attractive financier Lucian Blackstone, whose murky past and ruthless business practices strike fear in the hearts of Britain’s peerage? Trust Hattie to take an invigorating little adventure too far. Now she’s stuck with a churlish Scot who just might be the end of her ambitions…”
- Ravaged With You by J Kenner is now live!! — “Retired from the military and finally free of the demons of past missions, former Special Forces soldier Charlie “Red” Cooper leads a blissfully calm life running his successful distillery. At least until the day he finds his partner and best friend drowned in one of their best barrels of whiskey. Now he must dredge up old skills and memories to not only avenge his friend’s death, but to protect the one woman who has always made his pulse race—his friend’s grieving widow. Shocked by her husband’s death, Josephine Swift should be mourning, but instead she’s terrified and…pissed. Turns out the husband she’d fallen out of love with was into some seriously bad business. Even worse, he’s dragged her and his partner into his web of deceit and danger. Now his mistakes could get them both killed…”
- Mom Jeans and Other Mistakes by Alexa Martin is now live!! — “Jude Andrews is famous. Well, at least on Instagram. Her brand is clean eating, good vibes, Pilates, and casually looking like a sun-kissed goddess. In real life, however, she’s a total disaster. She has a strained relationship with her fame-hungry mom and her latest bad decision emptied out her entire savings account. Lauren Turner had a plan: graduate medical school and become the top surgeon in the country. But when she became unexpectedly pregnant, those plans changed. And when her fiancé left her, they changed again. Now navigating the new world of coparenting, mom groups, and dating, she decides to launch a mommy podcast with all the advice she wishes someone had given her. Jude and Lauren don’t have much in common, but maybe that’s why they’ve been best friends since the third grade. Through ups and downs, they’ve been by each other’s sides. But now? They’re broke, single, and do the only thing that makes sense—move in together, just like they talked about when they were teenagers. Except when they were younger, the plan didn’t include a five-year-old daughter and more baggage than their new townhouse can hold.”
