Last night, New York City flooded. A tidal wave of sewage inundated the subway; manhole covers rattled like it was the apocalypse; the 60 minutes between 8:50 p.m. and 9:50 p.m. was, by a wide margin, the wettest hour ever in Central Park; water submerged cars in all five boroughs; and at least eight New Yorkers tragically lost their lives in the storm.
And who was out in this history-setting catastrophic storm? The workers tasked with delivering food to people who were safe and dry inside their homes.
A little after ten last night, a video appeared on Twitter purporting to show a food-delivery worker wading through waist-high floodwater, walking his bike while holding a white plastic delivery bag. Some questioned whether this person was actually a delivery worker — all signs indicate he was — other examples of food-deliverers out in the storm were simple to find, even after 10 p.m., while New York City was experiencing the worst of the rainfall.
Reactions to the above tweet ranged from “Tip generously tonight!” to “DON’T ORDER FOOD TONIGHT!” to “Whoever ordered food needs to be in The Hague.” And Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez offered a measured, “Please do not be the person who orders delivery during a flash flood that the NWS has deemed a dangerous and life-threatening situation … If it’s too dangerous for you, it’s too dangerous for them.”
The video and photos are jarring, and the past 19 months have laid bare how uniquely vulnerable gig workers in general, and food-delivery workers specifically, are. Even as people worked through the surges of citywide COVID infection, many were not fairly compensated. As the New York Times reported this summer, “Though the minimum wage in New York City is $15 an hour, many residents who work for app-based services like Uber Eats, DoorDash and Lyft earn less than half that and cannot pay rent and other expenses, according to surveys of gig workers in the city.” While there have been efforts to organize, and to improve working conditions, last night is the clearest illustration yet that nothing has really improved at all.
It is, of course, not enough to say “tip generously,” or “don’t order food at a time when the people delivering it will have to risk their actual lives to get to your home,” because as we’ve seen throughout this pandemic — and these past ten days’ two major storms — putting workers’ lives at risk is not enough to deter everyone.
Instead, food delivery simply should not be an option; workers should be granted enough of a safety net so that they can stay safe without missing a night of wages. And we should be able to say that if the entire subway system is shut down, if there is a ban on all travel, and if the city’s streets are quite literally underwater, we aren’t risking workers’ safety unnecessarily so that you can get a sandwich or whatever delivered for dinner.

It’s time to celebrate recovery—and the people who live it every single day.
Across the country, it’s difficult to find people who don’t know someone personally affected by addiction. In July, a report from the United States government revealed that overdose deaths soared to a record 93,000 in 2020, a 29 percent increase from the year before COVID-19 impacted so many.
While there are many stories of hardship and grief, National Recovery Month is observed every September to teach Americans that substance use treatment and mental health services can enable those struggling to live healthy and rewarding lives.
Jason Wahler knows how difficult addiction can be. But after a public battle with drugs and alcohol, The Hills: New Beginnings star and CLEAN Cause ambassador is inspiring many to reach out for help.
“With National Recovery Month kicking off, the one thing I’d like to let people know is that it’s never too late,” he told E! News. “Ask yourself, ‘Does this add or subtract from the beautiful life I have to live? Am I really hitting my fullest potential?’ If the answer isn’t what you’d like, reach out and ask for help. You’re not alone whether it’s you, yourself struggling or a loved one around you and help is just an ask away.”
I missed out on She’s All That when it was released way back in 1999 — 22 years ago! — but was very much aware of the film and the impact it had on my close group of high school friends. And while its Cinderella-inspired plot device — a “jock” falls for a “nerdy-because-she-wears-glasses” girl from another click — remains just as cheesy today as it did in the late ’90s, after watching the flick earlier this week, I get the appeal and understand how this rather routine comedy grossed over $100 million at the worldwide box office.
Yet, more than anything, the one thing that stood out to me during my showing was just how much talent was packed into the 97-minute feature.
In case you forgot, check out this cast of characters — and don’t forget to watch the Netflix remake He’s All That, currently streaming now!
Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachel Leigh Cook
Oddly enough, the main stars of She’s All That failed to make much of an impact on the big screen years later. Hollywood tried its hardest to make Freddie Prinze Jr. a thing — remember Wing Commander? — and even gave the man his own short-lived TV series, but the actor just didn’t stick. Though, he has enjoyed success on the small screen on shows such as 24, Psych, and Bones, and as a voice actor on Star Wars Rebels.
Cook likewise enjoyed a few years on the big screen with would-be franchises Josie and the Pussycats and Texas Rangers, but has mostly stuck to TV acting in shows such as Psych, Ghost Whisperer, and the recent Cross Country Christmas.

Paul Walker
Out of everyone in the cast, Walker was the one to find the most success, at least from an acting standpoint, mainly due to the lucrative (and ongoing) Fast and Furious franchise. Yet, before his tragic death in 2013, the actor had done a pretty good job stacking his resume with roles in family adventures like Eight Below and supporting parts in more prestigious films such as Flags of Our Fathers and Pleasantville.
Matthew Lillard
Lillard rose to fame thanks to Scream, but managed to carve out a nice career as a character actor in films such as The Descendants and the acclaimed TV series The Bridge. He also played Shaggy in 2002’s Scooby-Doo and 2004’s Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, and has since served as the go-to actor for the character in a number of video games and cartoons. Oh, he was also in Wing Commander.
Anna Paquin
By the time Anna Paquin starred in She’s All That, she had already won an Academy Award for The Piano, appeared in Steven Spielberg’s Amistad, starred opposite Jeff Daniels in Fly Away Home, and featured in the star-studded Hurlyburly alongside Sean Penn, Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright and Meg Ryan. A year after She’s All That, Paquin would go on to play Rogue in the X-Men franchise, appear in Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous, Michael Dougherty’s Trick ‘r Treat, and HBO’s very popular True Blood for seven seasons.
Gabrielle Union
Gabrielle Union had mostly appeared in TV series such as Family Matters, Saved by the Bell: The New Class, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Sister, Sister, respectively, before starring as Katie in She’s All That — a part that led to features such as Love & Basketball, Bring It On, Bad Boys II, Cradle 2 the Grave, and, more recently, TV series such as L.A.’s Finest and the animated series The Lion Guard.
Dulé Hill
Speaking of Psych, Dulé Hill, aka Burton Guster, also starred in She’s All That as Preston, one of Zack’s entourage, and went on to star in films such as Holes and The Guardian before jumping to TV shows like Doubt, Ballers and, well, Psych.
Elden Henson
After bit roles in films such as Radio Flyer and Turner & Hooch, Henson hit pay dirt with The Mighty Ducks. She’s All That came about a few years later, as did roles in Cast Away, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, Lords of Dogtown, and, of course, Marvel’s Daredevil.
Usher
Well, I mean, if you don’t know who Usher is …
Kieran Culkin
Kieran Culkin started out as “the brother of Macaulay,” but has since proved to be a strong character actor thanks to roles in films such as The Cider House Rules, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and the TV series Fargo.
Lil’ Kim
By 1999, Lil’ Kim was already a star thanks to her debut studio album Hard Core, which was certified double platinum. Since then, the musician has sold more than 15 million albums and 30 million singles worldwide, and appeared in films such as You Got Served and Zoolander.

Other Notable Supporting Players:
Sarah Michelle Gellar (who also appeared with Freddie Prinze Jr. in I Know What You Did Last Summer, and receives an acknowledgment in the credits), Tim Matheson, and Clea DuVall.
Here’s the really crazy part: according to the DVD commentary by director Robert Iscove, M. Night Shyamalan actually polished the screenplay! Entertainment Weekly confirmed as much in 2013:
EW called [Jack] Lechner just to make sure the comment was legit — and after confirming that he wrote it, he reiterated that Shyamalan “did more than a polish” on the movie’s script: “He did a solid rewrite … He made it deeper, made the characters richer.” Before you scoff, remember that there’s a reason people still care about She’s All That 14 years after its release.
“I can see how Fleming would say it’s his movie, and I can see why M. Night would say it’s his movie,” Lechner continued. “They’re both right.”
Last week, we reported that Martin Garrix had played out two new unreleased songs at his first festival back, Electric Love in Austria. This past Saturday, Julian Jordan headlined Avalon in Los Angeles, where he played out the “finished” version of his collaboration with Martin and Tinie Tempah.
Compared to literally any of his songs over the past couple of years — “Drown,” “Higher Ground,” “Fire,” “Pressure,” etc. — this is certainly one of the hardest songs that Garrix has produced. And we’re 100% here for it.
So far it’s still untitled, at least publicly, but we’re extremely excited for this one to drop. Check it out below!

TV show description: A drama series, The Republic of Sarah TV show was created by Jeffrey Paul King.
The story begins as the bucolic tranquility of Greylock, New Hampshire is upended. A massive vein of coltan — an incredibly valuable mineral used in tech — is discovered under the town. State-backed mining company Lydon Industries swoops in with plans to extract the mineral, which will wipe the town of Greylock off the map.
With her friends and family in danger of losing their homes, rebellious high school teacher Sarah Cooper (Baker) vows to stop Lydon’s bulldozers.
Leading Lydon’s efforts is Sarah’s estranged brother, Danny Cooper (Mitchell). After enduring a difficult childhood at the hands of his mother, former New Hampshire state senator Ellen Cooper (Follows), Danny is eager to exact his revenge on a community he feels abandoned him.
There seems to be no way to stop the town’s impending demise until Sarah proposes an oddly intriguing solution. Greylock could declare independence since the town’s land was never properly claimed by the United States.
Sarah enlists her friends which include fellow teacher Corinne Dearborn (Lauren), police officer Amy “AJ” Johnson (Holloway), and diner manager Grover Simms (Duff). Three of Sarah’s students also take part — LA transplant Maya Jiménez (Alvarez), introspective outsider Tyler Easterbrook (Goodluck), and preppy “popular girl” Bella Whitmore (Bender).
With the help of Sarah’s supporters, they win the vote. Now, Sarah and her allies must confront an even more daunting task: building a country from scratch.
Series Finale: Episode #13 — The Last Rabbit Sarah is offered the chance for Greylock to receive international recognition, but at a great personal cost and turns to Grover for support. Bella (Landry Bender) is thriving in politics and tries to convince her dad to make it permanent. Danny offers to help Corinne with her legal problems, but Corinne asks for something he wasn’t expecting. Meanwhile, Tyler sees that AJ is struggling and offers to help. In return, AJ gives him a gift that supports his newfound passion. First aired: August 6, 2021.
