To-Go Cocktails Are Ending in NYC
Photo: Cindy Ord/Getty Images
Goodnight, sweet prince (read: 20-ounce plastic bottle filled with a mai tai). In keeping with Governor Andrew Cuomoâs tradition of announcing overnight changes to COVID rules, New York will no longer allow restaurants and bars to sell or deliver alcoholic beverages starting ⊠tomorrow! Earlier this month, the SLA had even extended the rule through July 5. Classic COVID Cuomo!
In a tweet announcing the news, the SLA calls this a âreturn to pre-pandemic guidelines,â but as everyone has been saying, who wants to go back to the old normal? By the old normal, they, of course, mean a New York without to-go drinks. The rule was a lifeline for many operators last year, and it was popular among customers, who were excited to spontaneously buy piña coladas while on the old afternoon stroll. In fact, in comments to ABC New York, a representative for the SLA said that a permanent extension of to-go drinks âis supported by 78 percent of New Yorkers, but the Legislature failed to extend it and now the Executive Order has ended.â Other states have made to-go drinks permanent, while New Yorkâs legislature failed to advance a bill that would do just that, in part because of pressure from liquor store lobbies. In a statement to Grub, an SLA rep says of the bill that âshould the Legislature choose to act on it, we are ready to work with them.â
New Yorkâs COVID restrictions may be in the past now, but the pandemic isnât over, and many industries, including restaurants, are still struggling to recover economically. To some, then, this seems like kicking someone when theyâre down. Others, though, see it as inevitable. âI am blown away that they didnât take away to-go drinks as they expanded hours,â one restaurateur told me in May, as restrictions eased. âAnd now I think weâll lose to-go drinks in six weeks, when itâs crazy in the streets, unfortunately.â
OlliOlli World Gameplay Changes Make It Feel Fresh

As a diehard fan of skateboarding games, Iâm always excited when a new series comes along. When OlliOlli launched on PlayStation Vita back in 2014, I instantly found myself hooked by its arcade structure. Levels were quick and skill-based with players being forced to focus on timing grinds and landing tricks successfully by hitting the X button upon landing. From PlayStation 4 and Xbox One to a trio of Nintendo consoles, I found myself playing OlliOlli on every system available and was equally as enthralled with the sequel, OlliOlli2: Welcome to Olliwood, which completed the trick system by adding in manuals.
To compare it to the most well-known skating series, OlliOlli2 felt like Tony Hawkâs Pro Skater 3, where the combo system was also finally complete and refined to the point where additional games could add more features but they wouldnât ever change the core gameplay. Thatâs why when OlliOlli World was announced, I was happy, but it felt almost unnecessary. Iâd be more than happy to play more levels, but how would developer Roll7 manage to meaningfully improve upon the sequel?
Well, it turns out thereâs a reason why Iâm not a game designer as the talented team at Roll7 has come up with a number of new additions that make OlliOlli World not only feel fresh but a proper reinvention of the franchise. While we havenât seen every addition yet, there are five that already make the game more than just another OlliOlli: checkpoints, wall rides, better alternate pathways, grab-based tricks, and vert ramps.

OlliOlli2 catered toward hardcore players and dared them to go through entire levels without ever exiting a combo. That thrill is still in OlliOlli World, but the series is also more accessible than ever thanks to a new checkpoint system. Itâs a dope addition that allows for even more difficult levels and sections, giving the game a bit of a Trials feel as a result. There was one tricky section featuring a wall ride (more on that in a bit) that I failed several times as I was losing speed trying to keep my combo alive. I eventually realized I had to focus a bit more on speed rather than score to clear the gap and I eventually cleared the challenging gap.

Wall rides are another new addition and one that allows for some really cool gameplay sections. Players grind billboards and other objects that allow them to clear ridiculously long gaps as a result. This becomes less about tricks and more about maneuverability. This highlights another thing new to OlliOlli World: a focus on exploration. While there had been low and high grounds to take in past titles, there are now fully fleshed out alternate pathways through levels. This not only adds replayability as players take on goals but adds a layer to strategy as players figure out what sections are best for their play style and preferred combos.
The trick system has also seen yet another reinvention with the addition of grab tricks, which I admittedly didnât do many as Iâm so used to only flipping and grinding in the series, and actual vert ramps complete with reverts. The first time the game led me to a vert ramp I was jaw dropped as I launched into the air, did a trick, and managed to land it. Itâs such a departure for the park-based series, but it feels incredible and allows for some incredibly cool levels to be built around the idea (such as going downhill and changing directions). These small tweaks give hardcore players the depth they want while the other changes make this the most welcoming OlliOlli to date.
The OlliOlli World gameplay changes help the game feel less like a samey follow-up and more like its own title that thoughtfully expands upon its foundation. Its art style is yet another manifestation of its desire for change as it went from gorgeous pixel art to a stylized 3D world (that also allows it to have more complex levels). Third entries rarely change things up so much in such a faithful which is why after just an hour of play, I canât wait to get back to Radlandia once it releases later this year on consoles and PC.
48 people charged, man has his throat slit, & more at ‘Redneck Rave’ in Kentucky
A âRedneck Raveâ in Kentucky last weekend has left dozens injured and 48 people charged after a 5-day, alcohol-fueled catastrophe.
Organizers claim that 20,000 tickets were sold to the event in the small town of Mammoth Cave in Kentucky last week, which led to dozens of injuries, arrests, and more. Among the incidents, one man had his throat slit by a friend after a drunken fight, a man choked a woman until she passed out, and a man driving a side-by-side at the festival also ended up with a log impaled in his abdomen.
According to sources, 29-year-old Lancer Hodges was arrested after he allegedly strangled a woman until she passed out when they got into a fight over a blanket. He was charged with strangulation, wanton endangerment and fourth-degree domestic violent assault.
The throat slasher still has not been apprehended.
As for the man with the log through his stomach, he was airlifted to a hospital.
Further reports from the festival describe a situation with âmultiple others who suffered severed fingers, broken bones, dislocated joints and severe lacerations at the festival. Medics also treated dozens more who had become ill because they were so drunk.â Dozens of attendees were charged with a range of offenses from drug trafficking to felony assault.
Though police were aware that the event would likely cause trouble, the sheriff ultimately made the decision to contain the chaos to the park because âhe did not have enough staff to try and stop it.â
âThe first vehicle that came through, we found meth, marijuana, and an open alcohol container,â Edmonson County Sheriff Shane Doyle told the Lexington Herald-Leader.
âAnd then one of the occupants had two active warrants⊠âWe were like âwell, this doesnât bode well for the weekend.’â
There is apparently another installment of the Redneck Rave for the fall, scheduled for Oct. 14-17, according to a Facebook page for the event.
