The Tragic Death Of Prince's Son

40

The musician commonly known as Prince was one of those larger-than-life figures who seemed indestructible before his sudden and unexpected death on April 21, 2016, at the age of 57. Part of what made the loss of Prince so shocking was his mystique: the super-talented workaholic was highly protective of his private life, and the idea that turmoil could underlie the public performances of this uber-professional musician didn’t occur to many fans until his time had passed.

The multi-instrumentalist was a global superstar thanks to such albums as 1984’s Purple Rain and 1987’s Sign ‘O The Times, but then found himself in a bitter feud with his record label, Warner Brothers. Prince had been highly prolific throughout his career, and the label demanded that he release fewer albums in 1993, which led to his changing his name to an unpronounceable symbol in an attempt to slip out of his recording contract, according to The Independent. At this time, the artist also began performing with the word “SLAVE” written on his cheek.

The ’90s also contained one of the most tragic and heartbreaking events of Prince’s life, the details of which were only to emerge after his death and the publication of the memoirs of his wife at the time, Mayte GarcĂa. She was just 16 years old when she caught Prince’s attention in 1989.

According to The Irish Times, Prince, 15 years her senior, reportedly told a friend, quote, “There’s my future wife.” GarcĂa lived in Germany with her parents, and Prince kept in touch with her with long, poetic letters in a style familiar to anyone who has read his album sleeve notes. When she was 17, Prince invited GarcĂa to his Paisley Park compound in Chanhassen, Minnesota, to contribute vocals in a recording session. Soon afterward she became part of Prince’s band as a singer and dancer, touring extensively while keeping her own apartment in Minnesota.

Thankfully, it would be several years before Prince and GarcĂa’s relationship would become physical. When Garcia was 19, Prince reportedly told her:

“I think it’s time. Time to get you on birth control.”

The pair got married in 1996, in a lavish event at a freshly-repainted Paisley Park involving more than half a million dollars’ worth of flowers. The triple album Emancipation, according to Allmusic, offered a snapshot of Prince’s first experiences with happy newlywed life.

Mayte GarcĂa became pregnant, and on October 16, 1996, gave birth to a son, Amiir. The couple’s first steps into parenthood would end in tragedy, however, when Amiir died only a week later, as a result of complications from Pfeiffer syndrome type 2, a rare genetic disorder. As Ultimate Prince reports, Prince and Mayte were interviewed by Oprah just a few weeks after the loss of Amiir.

The couple decided to keep their grief a secret. Rumors of their son’s ill health had circulated in the press, but Prince — most likely suffering from shock and in what the journalist Ian Penman describes in The London Review of Books as a “fugue state” — refused to answer any of Oprah’s questions on the subject, according to Yahoo! Entertainment, simply saying things, quote, “couldn’t be better.”

Prince threw himself into his work, which, though hardly unusual for people dealing with loss, Penman sees as the behavior of a man unable to deal with his grief. Prince had rejected many modern medical treatments for his wife during GarcĂa’s pregnancy, and his belief in the power of “God’s will” seemingly became incompatible with the tragic circumstances of his marriage.

Penman also argues that Prince may have felt unable to accept vulnerability in himself. GarcĂa’s book suggests that Prince may have begun pilfering the Vicodin his wife was prescribed following the loss of Amiir, and that he drank secretly while on tour.

The couple suffered a miscarriage in 1997, reports The Twin Cities Pioneer Press, and eventually divorced in 2000. Prince soon remarried and became a Jehovah’s Witness. In 1998, Prince released, “Comeback,” a song which gained significant attention after his death. The song deals with loss, and contains the lyrics:

“If you ever lose someone dear to you, never say the words ‘they’re gone.’ They’ll come back.”

Homecoming Is a New Queens Food Crawl Worth Knowing About

Bryan Lozano spent his formative years in Elmhurst, Queens. During the pandemic, he watched as the neighborhood — among the city’s most ethnically diverse and restaurant-worker heavy — became the epicenter of the COVID-19 crisis. While some fled New York City, Lozano found himself moving back to Elmhurst, and began brainstorming ways to get more involved locally, particularly with restaurant recovery.

“I was thinking deeply — what’s a meaningful life for me?” he says. “It catalyzed my desire to come back.”

And so this month, Lozano, who formerly worked in tech and nonprofits, launched Homecoming, a Queens food crawl that hones in on a specific neighborhood, allowing attendees to try dishes from mom-and-pop, immigrant-run restaurants. The natural neighborhood to choose for the launch was, of course, Elmhurst.

“‘Community building’ can often just be a PR term that’s kind of meaningless,” Lozano explains. “I don’t want to use that term, but bringing in money to the neighborhood was important.”

On a recent Saturday, I arrived at the Grand Ave-Newtown subway stop and headed to Indo Java, an Indonesian grocery store and the first check-in point, where we were greeted with our first bites: stuffed tofu and cendol, the icy green-jelly dessert made by Warung Selasa, a perfect treat for a sweltering 90-degree day. On arrival, guests got a “passport” that would get stamped with a smiley face at each of the participating businesses: Taiwanese Gourmet (where we got pork chop over rice), Lao Bei Fang Dumpling House (pan-fried pork and leek dumplings), Coco Malaysian (roti canai), and Eim Khao Mun Kai (for khao mun kai). There were several tours that day, and guests were encouraged to show up 20 minutes in advance to get settled and to make sure everyone was on the same timeline, so the restaurants wouldn’t be overwhelmed.

When Lozano first had the seed for the idea, he was met with some skepticism. “These restaurants are struggling during COVID and trying to make ends meet, and are nevertheless still on the hook for rent,” he recalls. “We really wanted to make sure our partners profited from this; we want them to feel supported and trust us — we are so thankful for the time they gave us.” One of the ways they sought to accomplish this was by getting their partners paid before the event, and building 20 percent tips into the ticket price.

When it came to choosing the signature dish to be highlighted, there was a lot of back-and-forth. Rather than simply selecting dishes he liked, Lozano felt it was important for each spot “to take agency of the story” they wanted to showcase. “I didn’t want them to think of it in terms of serving, like, people from Manhattan who had never had their cuisine before. I want guests to be in their space, rather than the other way around.”

On my tour, I was excited to see the group comprised of many Queens residents, some of whom were Lozano’s pals, as well as newcomers, such as an elderly woman who had grown up in Elmhurst but moved to Sunnyside, and was eager to return and rehash the old days. (Cookbook author Carla Lalli Music, who had recently selected Homecoming as a winner of the Creator Grant by Patreon, was in attendance that day as well, on a separate tour.)

Along our walk down Broadway, Lozano sprinkled in personal tidbits and encouraged guests to check out supermarkets and stands he loves, even those that weren’t officially a part of Homecoming. Lozano worked at a gas station growing up, and has fond memories of getting bubble tea on the strip; as he got older, Taiwanese Gourmet became the late-night post-party spot.

In addition to these anecdotes, there was an accompanying audio-guided tour, via an app called Gesso, with interviews with the restaurants’ owners to highlight the people and labor behind the food.

It was critical for Lozano to do more than just bring money to restaurants. From each $60 ticket’s price, $15 goes to supporting food-insecure New Yorkers via a pantry in the event’s specific neighborhood (for example, their Elmhurst crawl raised funds for New Life, rather than a bigger, more generalized organization). After looking into statistics regarding food insecurity in the area, Lozano was “flabbergasted” by the high rates of hardship in Elmhurst, even before the pandemic, and food pantries were overwhelmed by increased need during the pandemic. “It’s a simple idea: hunger doesn’t happen in the dark; we wanted to connect that to restaurant recovery,” he says.

Now, the team is gearing up for their next tour, which will launch in August, centered around Jackson Heights, an area that he was especially inspired to get involved in, after a recent fire that displaced hundreds of families. “Queens is so often overlooked — yet it’s the most diverse place in the world — we saw that even with COVID,” Lozano concludes. “It means so much to be able to give a platform to these restaurants to share their stories with a bigger audience.”

Fist of the North Star Vol. 1

Fist of the North Star Vol. 1

The hardcover packaging makes Fist of the North Star stand out on any shelf.

“You are already dead.”

It’s these iconic words uttered by Kenshiro that instantly make him one of the coolest manga protagonists to ever be drawn. By using his special martial art technique, Hokuto Shinken (the Divine Fist of the North Star), Ken is able to cause his foes to explode from within. It’s a striking visual, and the art by Tetsuo Hara is quite gruesome, which allows for cocky enemies to believe they have the upper hand before they ultimately perish. It only takes a few pages of reading Fist of the North Star (or alternatively Hokuto no Ken) to know that Ken is an effortlessly cool hero.

The VIZ Signature Edition manga of Fist of the North Star gives the legendary 1983 manga written by Buronson the treatment it deserves. The opening pages are glossy and filled with color, although the bulk of the 300-page volume is comprised of the manga paper that fans have grown to know and love. In fact, it was almost jarring at first to see manga printed on glossy paper (even if just for a few pages), and holding a hardcover volume was strange at first. However, the deluxe packaging is a joy to see, and the presentation is really top-notch. This is exactly the treatment an all-time classic manga deserves.

Fist of the North Star Vol. 1 manga

Left is the traditional manga paper, while the page on the right is on glossy paper.

While I’m no Fist of the North Star historian, I’ve become familiar with the series due to the animated adaptations over the years and some recent video game releases (check out Sega’s excellent Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise, especially if you like the Yakuza series). So it was a no-brainer to check out the manga that created the post-apocalyptic world that takes some clear inspiration from Mad Max that I’ve come to enjoy. The wasteland dreamt up by Buronson is filled with drama, cool characters that range from handsome to grotesque, and plenty of action.

This thick volume features the first 13 chapters of the manga. The writing of Buronson keeps the plot moving at a great pace, with characters being introduced all throughout the volume. Despite being 300 pages long, it’s difficult not to finish the volume in a single sitting as the action continues to grow and the story is gripping. One of the coolest additions to this package is some red-rust-tinted coloring that is added about three-fifths of the way through. It helps make some scenes with Yuria, Kenshiro’s love interest, much more impactful and is a nice touch.

Fist of the North Star Vol. 1

The rare usage of color adds an impressive look to some important moments.

The volume ends with some great commentary from Nobuhiko Horie of Coamix, who details the Chinese constellation myth that inspired the word “Hokuto” in the manga’s Japanese title. It’s great additional information to include and gives a nice glimpse into the behind-the-scenes of how the manga was made. I’m a sucker for anything that delves into the creative process, and it adds to the deluxe presentation that is offered here. With a luxurious package, some additional coloring, and 300 pages of iconic action, Fist of the North Star Vol. 1 is well worth the $19.99 purchase price for fans of Buronson and Tetsuo Hara’s classic and an ideal entry point for those looking to check out one of the best martial arts mangas ever made.

Score: 8.5/10

As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 8 equates to “Great.” While there are a few minor issues, this score means that the art succeeds at its goal and leaves a memorable impact.

Disclosure: The publisher provided a copy of the manga for our Fist of the North Star Vol. 1 – VIZ Signature Edition manga review.

Teena Marie – Aladdin’s Lamp (John Morales M+M Mix)

Buy the album here:

Producer extraordinaire John Morales returns to BBE Music, celebrating the life and work of R&B / soul legend Teena Marie with a double album full of brand new remixes, lovingly crafted from the original studio tapes, entitled ‘Love Songs & Funky Beats’.

“Teena is somewhat underrated, and people don’t really know much about her.” Says Morales. “I set out to immerse people in her music and represent what she really did. That meant for me a dive into more than her R&B hits, to dig into her ballads and dance cuts. People know she was talented. I don’t really think they really knew the depth of her abilities, her complete confidence to take it upon herself to do everything – singing, producing, arranging, songwriting. Teena Marie was the total package.”

John Morales had the pleasure of mixing many of Teena Marie’s original records over the years, so it felt natural to dig into the archives and select his favourite cuts to rework, extend and subtly update in his own distinctive style. While by no means a definitive collection of Lady Tee’s expansive musical catalogue, ‘Love Songs & Funky Beats’ represents a fitting tribute to a multifaceted and important voice in popular music, by one of the most storied mix engineers and remixers of our age.

Jumping into the music industry deep end in 1979 with a three-year mentorship from Berry Gordy & Rick James at Motown, Teena Marie then spent seven fertile years with Epic, which yielded her greatest commercial successes (including the classic album ‘Starchild’). After founding an independent label ‘Sarai’, Marie took a ten-year hiatus which ended in 2004 in a deal with hip hop label Cash Money Records; a less unlikely partnership than some might assume, given that Teena was one of the first ‘mainstream’ artists to perform a rap verse, on 1981’s ‘Square Biz’.

Teena Marie Brockert forged a unique path through the industry, an artist in-charge of her own destiny, influencing (and heavily sampled by) both the hip hop and R&B sounds of the 90’s and early 2000’s. Her 1982 lawsuit against Motown records resulted in “The Brockert Initiative”, which has benefitted literally thousands of other artists by making it illegal for record companies to ‘shelve’ artists by keeping them under contract without releasing their material. She continued to tour regularly and deliver commercially successful, expertly sculpted music, right up until her untimely passing in 2010.

The Isley Brothers – Make Me Say it Again girl

37

make me say it again girl

Oh, I believe you are a rainbow
All the heaven I need to see
You’re the promise everlasting
Where you are, I hope to be

Chorus

Make me say it again girl
Make me say it again girl
Make me say it again girl
You’re all I need, oh yes you are
You’re all I need, oh yes you are
You’re all I need

Verse 2

Whatever pains inside, you make it better
You seem to realize, when I’m concerned
You are the only one who goes through the changes
Giving my life directions, when I am turned

Chorus

Verse 3

How am I worthy of love from an angel
Princess Imperial of my soul
Don’t really matter if you choose not to answer
Hoping what I reveal you already know
