Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music, linked by the common bonds of African-American and European-American musical parentage.

Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in West African cultural and musical expression, and in African-American music traditions.

As jazz spread around the world, it drew on national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to different styles. New Orleans jazz began in the early 1910s, combining earlier brass-band marches, French quadrilles, biguine, ragtime and blues with collective polyphonic improvisation. In the 1930s, heavily arranged dance-oriented swing big bands, Kansas City jazz, a hard-swinging, bluesy, improvisational style and Gypsy jazz (a style that emphasized musette waltzes) were the prominent styles.

Bebop emerged in the 1940s, shifting jazz from danceable popular music toward a more challenging “musician’s music” which was played at faster tempos and used more chord-based improvisation. Cool jazz developed near the end of the 1940s, introducing calmer, smoother sounds and long, linear melodic lines.

The mid-1950s saw the emergence of hard bop, which introduced influences from rhythm and blues, gospel, and blues, especially in the saxophone and piano playing. Modal jazz developed in the late 1950s, using the mode, or musical scale, as the basis of musical structure and improvisation, as did free jazz, which explored playing without regular meter, beat and formal structures.

Jazz-rock fusion appeared in the late 1960s and early 1970s, combining jazz improvisation with rock music’s rhythms, electric instruments, and highly amplified stage sound. In the early 1980s, a commercial form of jazz fusion called smooth jazz became successful, garnering significant radio airplay. Other styles and genres abound in the 2000s, such as Latin and Afro-Cuban jazz.

Lady Gaga’s ā€œArtpop,ā€ The #RHOBH Trailer, and That Gucci Collaboration

0

    Art by Jack Vhay.

Straight from theĀ InterviewĀ offices—from Manhattan’s midtown to Bed-Stuy in Brooklyn, sometimes L.A., and beyond—this is theĀ Word Wide Web Bulletin—a compilation of some of theĀ stories the internet has been murmuring about. From politics to drag, and everything in between. This week, Little Monsters demand more Artpop from Lady Gaga, the dramatic trailer for the new season of #RHOBH is here, and Colton Underwood comes out. Let’s talk about it.

Put Your Rave Paws Up

You know the formula already—as stated by the sex philosopher Samantha Jones: ā€œFirst come the gays, then the girls, then… the industry!ā€ In the case of the 2013 future-forward pop album Artpop by Lady Gaga, it’s the gays that have kept its spirit and relevancy alive in the year 2021. The album, which was poorly received by fans and critics alike, reentered the zeitgeist this week as Little Monsters worldwide reminisced on the impact of the nearly 10-year-old album. It’s quite funny that an album which Mother Monster herself described as ā€œheart surgeryā€ is receiving praise years after its release, but for longtime fans of Lady Gaga, this renaissance has been a long time coming. The album delivered, in its due time, a press tour from an unhinged and creative pop star unlike any other we’ve seen in recent history. If you need further proof, just listen to ā€œManicure,ā€ ā€œSexxx Dreams,ā€ or ā€œMary Jane Holland,ā€ and while you’re at it watch the pop-meets-Bravo music video for ā€œG.U.Y.ā€ The Artpop fever hit its peak when a Change.org petition was signed over 40,000 times, asking Gaga and her record label Interscope Records, to release a B-Side of the album, containing songs that the pop music legend never released. While we patiently await the Summer 2021 soundtrack from Lady Gaga, we’ll just keep streaming the oldies but goodies.Ā (And ā€œMontero.ā€)

The Met Gala is Back, But Not on Monday and Not in May

Photo from the February 1998 cover of Interview. Collage by Jack Vhay.

Anna Wintour and New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art sent ripples worldwide when they announced thatĀ theĀ hottest party in the world, The MET Gala, will be back for not one, but two glamorous nights. The 2021-2022 Met Gala will honor American fashion in two segments; the first one titled ā€œIn America: A Lexicon of Fashionā€ will examine our nation’s impact on the fashion world, and the second part, titled ā€œIn America: An Anthology of Fashion,ā€ will offer a historical perspective going as far back as 1670, according to the museum. The internet set ablaze with jokes, predictions, and dream guest lists for the two-fold event. As the 2019 Met Gala was canceled due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, the upcoming American homage to fashion at the Met Gala is sure to feed the souls of fashion-hungry crowds, and of course the pockets of the MET. After all the event is a fundraiser. But we can’t help but fear where some will take their looks—we’re looking at you, J*m*s Ch*rl*s.

The Diamonds of #RHOBH are Back Darling, Bling Bling and Drama

Photograph courtesy of Erika Jayne.

ā€œWhat’s wrong with being fake and phony sometimes?,ā€ asks Lisa Rinna in the trailer for the highly-anticipated season 11 of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (RHOBH). It’s clear the drama in the Diamond Hills has been brewing. Obviously, there are scandals, like Erika Jayne and her husband Tom Girardi’s money troubles. and the ā€œwidows and orphansā€ he (or is it they?) stole money from. There’s also new blood in town, like Kathy Hilton—yes, mother of The Hilton sisters and sister of Kyle Richards—and Crystal Minkoff and her ugly leather pants—an instant fan-favorite Housewife ready to deliver all the shade. The women of Beverly Hills never fail to deliver, even when the drama is about a dog named Lucy; there’s a reason why RHOBH is one of the most loved, and hated, franchises in the Bravo-sphere. The Diamonds return to our television screens on May 19th. Watch the trailer below, and catch up on this conversation between Rinna and Denise Richards. Oh, and don’t forget to let Miss Jayne tell you a thing or two about earrings. It’s Beverly Hills darling, chi chi chi.

Gucciaga: The Gucci x Balenciaga Collab Everyone’s Talking About

Unless you’ve been living under a literal rock, you’ve seen the clothes, the video, and the hot takes—everyone is here for the Gucci x Balenciaga collaboration. The clothes, which were described by people on the internet as ā€œan exchange student’s wet dreamā€ and the video to accompany the presentation, feel like a dose of adrenaline—a much-needed shock to our veins in a world seemingly devoid of good things. The show is filled with references, like Tom Ford’s red-hot velvet suit from 1996, or all of his collections during the late 90s at Gucci, which can only be described as hot. Sorry, dictionary—invent a better word and we’ll use it. The clothes range from hypebeast staples like puffers and Balenciaga-shaped Gucci purses to sensual Studio 54-ware—we’re talking silky, unbuttoned tops, belted crop tops, and heavy jewels. The world is reigniting, and Alessandro Michele wants to dress us (or maybe undress us?) for the club. Watch the show below, and get ready to party like it’s 1996.

Former Virgin Bachelor Colton Underwood Comes Out as GayĀ

In other shocking, but not totally surprising news, the former Bachelor contestant Colton Underwood went on Good Morning AmericaĀ to tell the world he is, in fact, a homosexual. I, for one, applaud this man’s bravery to go on national television to live his authentic truth, after joining a reality TV contest about heterosexual love and after jumping a fence—quite literally running away from a house full of women ready to marry him. Can’t get any gayer than that, can it? Well, you’re wrong. Almost as if it were planned, wink wink, Netflix announced a series following Underwood and his coming out process, guided by none other than Olympic star-turned gay Messiah and our in-house jean reviewer Gus Kenworthy. Though we applaud and even encourage these types of stories, well-documented and streamed for millions of eyeballs worldwide, there are far better options for shows, and even far better so-called ā€œgay-guides.ā€ Netflix knows where to look and who to look at, but to highlight this particular journey, well honey, that’s choices.

LUTIE’S GARDEN RESTAURANT AT COMMODORE PERRY ESTATE, AUBERGE RESORTS COLLECTION OPENS TODAY

0

Storied architectural landmark and urban destination Commodore Perry Estate, Auberge Resorts Collection is pleased to announce the opening of Lutie’s Garden Restaurant today in Austin, Texas. Lutie’s features ingredient-forward fare prepared with an elevated approach as influenced by husband-and-wife chef team Bradley Nicholson and Susana Querejazu’s experiences cooking in acclaimed restaurants around the world. The ever-changing, seasonal menus spotlight local farmers and ranchers and reflect the chefs’ celebration of ingredients through preparation rooted in understated simplicity. Named after the estate matriarch Nannie Lewette ā€œLutieā€ Perry, the namesake restaurant melds warm hospitality with the convivial spirit of the property’s Jazz Age legacy, transporting guests to a contemporary garden retreat overlooking lush estate grounds. Lutie’s is now open to hotel guests and private club members for dinner service to start, Wednesday through Sunday from 5-10 p.m. Beginning April 14, Lutie’s will be open to the public by advanced reservations only, available on OpenTable. Access to the estate grounds and amenities will be exclusive to hotel guests and club members only.

Ā

Marking a return to the city in which they began their careers, distinguished chef duo Executive Chef Bradley Nicholson and Executive Pastry Chef Susana Querejazu have distilled their extensive experiences — from cooking in beloved Austin establishments to acclaimed, Michelin-starred restaurants around the globe — into a culinary program that honors familiar regional flavors and a sense of place with modern, world-class techniques and preparation. Always pushing creative boundaries, Executive Chef Nicholson’s cuisine focuses on manipulating whole ingredients via methods such as fermentation and aging to achieve new and unexpected flavors.

Ā

ā€œDeceptive simplicity in cuisine has become my foundation for creativity,ā€ said Nicholson. ā€œLutie’s is the culmination of a personalized, handcrafted approach and allowing ingredients, sourced from local farms and purveyors, to be the guide.ā€

Ā

Intended as a multi-course experience, Lutie’s menu features dishes like Yonder Way pork with pickled cabbage and creamer peas; charcoal-grilled chicken with leeks and hominy; and royal red shrimp with daikon and celery. Highlights from the dessert menu include a kouign amann ice cream and seasonal soft-serve flavors like fresh strawberry finished with Texas olive oil.

Ā

The seasonal menus are complemented by a robust beverage program featuring craft cocktails; a curated collection of rare and vintage liquors, digestifs, and spirits; craft beers highlighting the best brewers in the state; an expansive wine list with a focus on natural wines, and coffee in partnership with local roaster Tiny House.

Ā

Executive Chef Bradley Nicholson began his culinary career in Austin, Texas, where he spent several years at acclaimed restaurant Barley Swine, before moving to San Francisco for tenures at Michelin-starred restaurants Birdsong and Benu. In 2015, Nicholson was recognized in Zagat’s 30 Under 30, and he was a recipient of the Ment’or BKB Grant program for 2016-17, giving him the opportunity to refine his expertise in Copenhagen alongside former Noma Chef Matt Orlando at world-renowned restaurant Amass.

Ā

Like Nicholson, Executive Pastry Chef Susana Querejazu shares an Austin origin with years of pastry experience at local restaurants like Enoteca Vespaio, Vespaio Ristorante, Uchi, and Uchiko, before taking on the role of executive pastry chef at Odd Duck and Barley Swine and, later, as pastry sous chef at Quince Restaurant and three-Michelin-starred Saison in San Francisco. In addition to her expertise in plated desserts, bread, baking, and viennoiserie, Querejazu served as assistant sommelier at The Riddler in San Francisco. In 2016, Querejazu was named an Eater Young Gun and was nominated for a Pastry Chef of the Year CultureMap Tastemaker Award. Chef Querejazu was also a recipient of the Ment’or BKB Grant program for 2016-17, where she staged at Le Meurice in the birthplace of patisserie, Paris, France.

Ā

In addition to developing dynamic menus for Lutie’s, Chefs Nicholson and Querejazu also oversee all food and beverage operations at the estate, including delivering one-of-a-kind catering experiences and events for weddings and social occasions.

Ā

Through the whimsical lens of powerhouse style maker Ken Fulk, who served as both designer and creative director of Commodore Perry Estate, Lutie’s interiors deliver a modern interpretation of an old-school country club. Brimming with natural light, the dining room features vibrant shades of green, gilded details, and delicate greenery hung from a latticework ceiling. Bespoke upholstered furnishings—freestanding banquettes in a custom floral fabric and scalloped bar stools—impart a decidedly refined and residential feel. A breezy covered terrace overlooks the property’s immaculate Italian gardens and fountains. Blending relaxed European charm and gracious Texas hospitality, Lutie’s conveys the effortless glamour and inviting familiarity of dining in the country home of a treasured friend.

Ā

ā€œLutie’s is delightfully old-fashioned and remarkably charming,ā€ says Fulk. ā€œIt is utterly familiar yet like no place you’ve ever been. Designed as an unexpected urban refuge where you can linger over a delicious meal and enjoy a refreshing cocktail while taking in the bucolic setting.ā€

Ā

Designed by local architecture firm Clayton & Little as an addition to the historic estate and backdrop to the magnificent sunken gardens, Lutie’s hugs the existing stone walls that enclose the former estate. Intended to feel as though it has always been part of the property, the building will be covered in ivy so that it recedes into the landscape while the original stone wall peeks through along the interior’s perimeter.

Ā

Named after the estate matriarch, a driving design force behind the grounds, Lutie’s is situated at the Commodore Perry Estate, a destination hotel and private club in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Austin. Built in the Jazz Age in 1928, the estate was originally the country home of Commodore Edgar and Lutie Perry, and often the setting for lavish social gatherings and soirĆ©es between the couple’s stints of travel through Europe.

DISTORTED (Alabaster Penitentiary #1) by NYLA K.

**SPOILER-FREE REVIEW**

ā€˜Dascha’s sadness is palpable. He wears it on his sleeve, almost like a badge of honor. He isn’t ashamed of his imperfections, that much is clear. His mind is broken, and either he’s made his peace with it, or he’s blissfully unaware. But either way, he doesn’t shy away from the cavernous empty space inside himself.’

What did we just read? Oh wow…. Distorted by Nyla K. – we are speechless! We have never read this Author before and we went into this book completely blind. We’ll be honest with you; we did read the synopsis after a reader recommended it to us, but that’s it, we stayed away from all reviews and wow are we glad we did! Oh my. First of all, we will not talk about the story. Not at all. If you read and enjoy really dark romance, if you love suspense and hard-hitting drama, if you read m/m and like it hot, if you like to push your reading boundaries. Well, Ladies and Gents…THIS BOOK!

ā€˜I don’t want him to know some twisted part of me enjoyed some part of what just happened. I don’t know which part…It started out as the worst thing that’s ever happened to me, but my body rarely reacts the same way my mind does.’

Please do read the trigger warnings, they are aplenty! We loved this book. Every. Single. Thing. It pushed us, it shocked us, it broke our hearts, it had us questioning ourselves and it had us crying tears of frustration. It even had us chuckling at times. It was a feast for our book-loving hearts and we have fallen in love with a new to us Author. It doesn’t get much better than that! There’s no question that this standalone in the new series: Alabaster Penitentiary by Nyla K. will stay with us for a very long time, and we cannot wait to read more.

ā€˜That’s what they want…They want you dead, that’s why you’re here. Everyone thinks you’re dead, and now you are. You’re as good as dead.’

Warped, twisted, violent, tragic, horrific yet sweet and tender, Distorted drew us in and swallowed us whole. At no point could we look away, yet we had to take the odd break to process what we just read. Clever, agonisingly fragile yet hard-hitting, it evoked every single one of our senses and the characters stole our hearts along the way. which surprised us- until it didn’t. What a powerful read. Unique, exhilarating, and magnificent storytelling. We have no words. Other than we bloody loved it!

ā€˜He’s Satan. That’s who he is. I’ve been fucking around with Lucifer himself.’
ā€œWhat the fuck is wrong with you?ā€

Van Helsing TV Show on Syfy: Season Five Viewer Votes – canceled + renewed TV shows

Van Helsing TV show on Syfy: canceled? renewed for season 6?

(Photo: Mayo Hirc/Nomadic Pictures Inc./SYFY)

Will the Dark One be victorious in the fifth season of the Van Helsing TV show on Syfy? As we all know, the Nielsen ratings typically play a big role in determining whether a TV show like Van HelsingĀ is cancelled or renewed for season six (in this case, we know season five is the end). Unfortunately, most of us do not live in Nielsen households. Because many viewers feelĀ frustrated when their viewing habits and opinions aren’tĀ considered,Ā we invite you to rate all ofĀ the fifth season episodes of Van Helsing here.

A Syfy post-apocalyptic drama series, Van Helsing, stars Kelly Overton, Jonathan Scarfe, Tricia Helfer, Aleks Paunovic, Kim Coates, Keeya King, Nicole Munoz, Jesse Stanley, and Jennifer Cheon. The show centers on Van Helsing descendent Vanessa ā€œVanā€ Helsing (Overton), who awoke from a coma to find vampires had overtaken the world. A prime target for the vampires, she’s also humanity’s last hope with her immunity to vampires and her ability to turn them into humans. In season five, Vanessa, Violet (King), and Jack (Munoz) risk everything to finally bring an end to the Dark One, once and for all. The Van Helsings must figure out ways to escape and evade the various obstacles in their path to prevent them from their mission, leading to an epic final showdown between the Van Helsings and the Dark One.

What do you think? Which season five episodes of the Van Helsing TV series do you rate as wonderful, terrible, or somewhere between? Do you think that Van HelsingĀ should be ending or renewed for a sixth season on Syfy? Don’t forget to vote, and share your thoughts, below.
