Hidden Figures And 11 Other Great Movies To Watch For Black History Month

0

Do The Right Thing (1989)

Do The Right Thing is a Spike Lee movie about one hot day in a Brooklyn neighborhood. All day, racial tensions continue to rise until a major event turns tragic. Spike Lee stars alongside Danny Aiello, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, and Giancarlo Esposito.

Do the Right Thing is one of Spike Lee’s best films. It includes a bunch of future stars, including Rosie Perez, Martin Lawrence, and Samuel L. Jackson. This is a film that uses clever writing to address topics of race that are, unfortunately, still relevant today.

Black History Month is only one month out of the year, but movies like Hidden Figures, Do The Right Thing, and Black Panther can be watched any time of the year, especially to celebrate Black artists and art.

Margo Price Joins Loretta Lynn for New Version of “One’s on the Way”: Listen

0

Loretta Lynn and Margo Price have recorded a new version of the title track from Lynn’s 1971 album, One’s on the Way. The duet appears on the country music legend’s new album, Still Woman Enough, her fiftieth solo record. It was recorded at the historic Cash Cabin Studio in Hendersonville, Tennessee. Below, listen to the song and watch a behind-the-scenes video of Price in which she discusses Lynn’s influence.

“I chose ‘One’s On the Way’ because it’s an important song,” Price says in the clip. “It was an important song at the time and it’s still an important song—to be able to talk about birth control and women’s rights in country music is legendary.”

Price’s most recent album That’s How Rumors Get Started was released last year. Read her Song I Wish I Wrote interview, “Margo Price on the Bob Dylan Classic She Wishes She Wrote,” over on the Pitch.

Swiss-Cuban Jazz artist Yilian Canizares is not Worried about the Future of Jazz

0

Yilian – pronounced Gillian, she insists – Canizares is unmissable. Right from her frilly, polka dotted outfit, to big hair and neon shades, Canizares has an unapologetic sense of style. But beyond her appearance what’s truly unmissable about her is the control she can have over her audience.

Canizares’ music has the power to make one cry one moment and stand up and jump the next. She lays bare her personal journey, her history, her roots, through her music. A big believer of the oral tradition, Canizares carries on the message of her ancestors through her Afro-Cuban brand of music.

She sings in a host of languages, the most remarkable of which is Yoruba. The Yorubas are an ethnic group from West Africa, where Canizares’ ancestors come from. She sings for her grandfather’s grandmother, a strong woman who was “born a slave and died a free woman”.

Since this was her first performance in India, Yilian Canizares admitted she was “rather nervous”. Anyone who saw her on the stage though wouldn’t be able to tell.

With a stage presence as good as any veteran’s, Canizares had the audience sing a whole song along with her. Successfully.

R.I.P. Kimye, Haim’s New Song with Taylor Swift, and a Bad Bunny Weekend

0

Straight from the Interview offices—which now span from midtown Manhattan to brownstone Brooklyn, L.A. to the U.K., and beyond—this is the Word Wide Web Bulletin, a compilation of our favorite internet gossip from this week. This week: R.I.P. #KIMYE, Haim and Taylor Swift, and Bad Bunny on SNL. Let’s talk about it.

R.I.P. KIMYE

Kim Kardashian photographed by Steven Klein for Interview

We knew it was coming, but nothing could prepare us for this moment. The end of #Kimye is now a reality. As of a few hours ago Kimberly Kardashian, goddess of Calabasas and author of the book Selfish, filed for divorce from her husband of 6 and-a-half years, Kanye West. Their marriage is survived by a complex culture forever changed by the union of one of hip-hop’s sharpest voices with the ultimate boss of reality television. Their influence as Kimye, as they will forever be remembered, is hard to overstate. From fashion to music to facial features, Kim and Kanye were once the emblems of celebrity in the 21st century. It’s a sad note to end the week on, but the possibility of a post-Corona single szn for Kim Kardashian gives us hope for what’s to come. It’s about to be Kimmy’s world, and we’re ready to live in it. Revisit her legendary 2017 cover story here, where she spoke with Janet Mock.

Telfar Clemens Named a Fashion Force in Time’s The Next 100

Telfar Clemens photographed by Ari Marcopoulos for Interview,

Earlier this week, Time unveiled the 2021 TIME100 Next list, highlighting forward-thinking leaders and stars across multiple fields. Six people were featured on this year’s covers, including disco diva Dua Lipa, soccer star Marcus Rashford, actor Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, author Brit Bennett, the Prime Minister of Finland Sanna Marin, and New York designer Telfar Clemens, to which we say: It’s about time. Revisit his conversation with Italian designer Stefano Pilati about what makes them gag. It’s a kiki.

Prince Harry and Meghan, Royals No More

In a historic announcement, the Queen officially announced that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who now live in California, will no longer return as official members of the Royal Family. Instead, they’ll simply become  “much loved members of the family,” per the Queen’s statement. The news should come as no surprise to anyone following the Harry and Meghan saga. Since moving to the U.S., the couple, who will soon welcome their second child, have followed the Obama playbook by getting into podcasting and the Netflix business. Cheers to their permanent stay in the States, where maybe one day, Meghan will join the cast of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Andy Cohen, make it happen.

Haim Turns Up the Heat with a “Gasoline” Remix Featuring Taylor Swift

Haim photographed by Noua Unu Studio for Interview.com

Country alt girls, this is your time to shine. Last year, the Haim sisters gifted the world with their third album, Women in Music Pt. III. In 2021, they’re delivering once more. This time, they’ve enlisted the help of two musical powerhouses from different corners of the industry, Taylor Swift and Thundercat. The sisters released two new remixes from their Grammy-nominated album, including “Gasoline,” featuring the angsty vocals of Swift, and “3 AM,” a hazy rendition that seamlessly blends Thundercat’s energy with Haim’s laid back cool-girl vibe. As we keep playing the two new songs on repeat, revisit the time Haim spoke to three rebellious Texas girls known as The Chicks. And while we’re talking about Texas, if you’re able to support those affected by the winter storm in the Lone Star state, you can do so here.

Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland Is Finally Out on Hulu, and Punk Cruella Is Coming

Zhao photographed by Pat Martin for Interview.

Audiences can finally dive into the world of Chloé Zhao, oour next great director according to, well, everyone. Her film Nomadland, starring Frances McDormand, tells the story of a forgotten America and is an Oscar front-runner. All eyes are on the Beijing-born director as she gears up to release her next movie, the Marvel space saga Eternals, starring Angelina Jolie and Richard Madden. Revisit the time she and Alfonso Cuarón spoke about the quiet compassion of making a movie. In other movie news, Disney released the trailer for the highly anticipated Cruella, starring Emma Stone. Though the new take on the 101 Dalmatian’s chic villain looks red hot, excuse us while we pay homage to the one and only queen of spotted dogs, Glenn Close. Icons only.

Bad Bunny photographed by Rennell Medrano for Interview.

Dear reader, this weekend two of the world’s most coveted men will be together, for one night only, and it’s the talk of the town. Regé-Jean Page, Bridgerton’s red-hot leading man, is hosting Saturday Night Live while reggeaton’s resident bad boy Bad Bunny  brings his Latino fire to the stage. As we prepare for the Saturday-night spectacle, we couldn’t help but wonder will La Rosalia make a cameo? She’s been spotted in NYC recently, and the could very well be performing their new hit, “La Noche de Anoche.” While we let the rumors simmer, revisit the conversation between El Conejo Malo and Rosalia, and get your gag on with Interview’s Creative Director Mel Ottenberg’s review of Bridgerton, and other iconic shows.

NYC’s Jing Fong, Open Since 1978, Closes Dining Room

15

Chinatown’s dim sum palace Jing Fong will close its sprawling indoor dining room, the owners announced today. The business will continue to operate its takeout and delivery business, as well as offer service on its outdoor, second-floor patio. Open since 1978, Jing Fong is Manhattan’s largest Chinese restaurant and one of the neighborhood’s more famous spots. In 2017 the owners expanded with a second location on the Upper West Side, which will also remain open.

“At the end of the day, we’ve been dealing with this pandemic now, for us, over a year,” says Truman Law, whose grandfather opened the restaurant. Restaurants in Chinatowns were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic earlier than most because of a precipitous drop in tourism, growing concerns in the community over the coronavirus, and Sinophobia that also led to an alarming spike in hate crimes against Asian-Americans.

Last February,Lam said  sales were down 25 to 50 percent, depending on the day, “The writing’s on the wall that it’s basically going to be down, we just don’t know how much,” he said at the time. Today, he says sales are down 85 percent, in part because the restaurant’s events business — once half of all sales — has completely evaporated.

“We are basically running the smallest part of our business, which is delivery, for a year,” he explains. “Our type of restaurant, that does dim sum lunches and banquet hall stuff, everybody is struggling and just kind of trying to survive one day at a time.”

At 800 seats, the restaurant’s size has presented issues since the start of the pandemic. Jing Fong shut down on March 12 following Governor Andrew Cuomo’s order prohibiting large gatherings of 500 or more people. And even once restaurants were allowed to partially reopen, the 25 percent occupancy limit has proved difficult to navigate because the restaurant loses its volume and bustle, Lam noted to Gary He on Eater NY, According to a statement posted to the restaurant’s Instagram,, Lam will seek to reopen Jing Fong elsewhere, and says in a statement they are “actively and quickly searching.”

“It’s everything. It’s not just rent, it’s just not neighborhood, it’s not just utilities. It’s literally everything,” he says. “We’re in a part of town that’s more tourist dependent. There’s not much residential around here. It’s more like small office building. Now, there’s no tourists, businesses are told to work from home, and the local community tend to prefer to eat at home. There’s just not a lot of foot traffic down there.”
