WarnerMedia Inks First-Look Deal with the Stars of truTV’s Breakout Hit, “Impractical Jokers”

“Impractical Jokers” Receives Early 10th Season Renewal Ahead of Ninth Season Premiere on February 4 on truTV

LOS ANGELES (February 4, 2021) – WarnerMedia announced today that the company has locked a first-look deal with the stars of truTV’s highest rated franchise, “Impractical Jokers.” As part of the agreement, Joe Gatto, James “Murr” Murray, Brian “Q” Quinn and Sal Vulcano, collectively known as the comedy troupe The Tenderloins, will develop and produce original unscripted and scripted programming for TNT, TBS and truTV as well as HBO Max. Currently ranked as cable’s #1 unscripted comedy in 2020, “Impractical Jokers” has been renewed by truTV for a tenth season ahead of its ninth season premiere on Thursday, February 4 at 10:00p.m. ET/PT.

Brett Weitz, General Manager, TBS, TNT and truTV said: “From the very first dinner I had with Joe, James, Brian and Sal, I knew I loved spending time with them, and that our audiences would as well. And here we are, greenlighting a tenth season. We’re proud to be the home, where the guys can continue to flex their creative muscles, continue to evolve their comedy and build new IP that we can introduce into the larger WarnerMedia family.”

Corie Henson, EVP/Head of Unscripted Development, TNT, TBS, truTV added: “The guys had a hit movie and three wildly successful shows with ‘Impractical Jokers,’ ‘Dinner Party’ and ‘Misery Index’… and that was all in 2020 alone. They are prolific and have a ton of ideas about how to turn more hits into an even bigger brand. We have three networks, so we’re going to get out of their way, and give them the support and the biggest platform to do just that.”

“For over a decade, truTV has been our home and we couldn’t be happier to continue crashing on the company couch,” said The Tenderloins. “We absolutely love making ‘Impractical Jokers’ and a big part of that is the support that WarnerMedia gives to us and our crazy ideas. To continue making ‘Jokers’ while being given the opportunity to develop and produce other content for our beloved fans is a dream come true. That’s not hyperbole. We’re grateful and excited to an insane degree.”

The Tenderloins are represented by Jack Rovner and Dexter Scott of Vector Management, Martin Lesak, Jason Heyman & Nick Nuciforo of UTA and Danny Passman of Gang, Tyre, Ramer, Brown & Passman.

The T-nets continue to expand on the strength of the “Impractical Jokers” franchise across the company’s cable and streaming platforms. The lineup of programming featuring Gatto, Murray, Quinn and Vulcano includes “Impractical Jokers,” “Impractical Jokers: After Party,” and “Impractical Jokers: Dinner Party” for truTV; “The Misery Index” for TBSâ and “Impractical Jokers: The Movie” currently steaming on HBO Maxâ.

· The ninth season of truTV’s tentpole series “Impractical Jokers,” premieres on February 4th at 10:00p.m. ET/PT. The series is a ratings juggernaut that consistently achieves a top cable comedy ranking and is currently cable’s #1 unscripted comedy in 2020. This season, the guys get more personal than ever before. From colorfully redecorating one Joker’s private property to forcing another to make food deliveries in the car from hell, boundaries will be hilariously over-stepped, and personal space will be memorably invaded.

· The third season of “The Misery Index” kicks off January 26th at 10:30p.m. ET/PT on TBS. Inspired by the card game Sh*t Happens, the series features teams competing against each other my attempting to rate hilarious and miserable real-life events based on the “misery index” – a ranking system created by a team of therapists. Jameela Jamil stars as the host with Gatto, Murray, Quinn and Vulcano as recurring panelists.

· Cable’s #1 new unscripted comedy series “Impractical Jokers: Dinner Party” followed Gatto, Murray, Quinn, and Vulcano as they safely, and hilariously, joined each other for dinner from their respective homes. The remotely shot, 16-episode season for truTV featured the long-time friends breaking bread and dishing about their week, joined by dinner guests including Jeff Daniels, Edie Falco, Wayne Brady, Mariano Rivera, Paula Abdul, Kane Hodder, Colin Jost, and DJ Marshmello, among others.

· Last year, truTV’s first feature-length film “Impractical Jokers: The Movie” opened to 2.6 million across 357 theaters and expanded in its second week to nearly 1,900 theaters across the United States. The film follows the four lifelong friends and comedians in a fictional story of a humiliating high school mishap from the early nineties. Featuring appearances from Paula Abdul, Jaden Smith, and Joey Fatone, the movie combines the fictional narrative with real-life footage of over-the-top punishments and callbacks to classic moments from the series.

· Coming Soon: A new season of “Impractical Jokers: After Party” follows host Joey Fatone as he takes the cast of the “Impractical Jokers” and surprise guests through a deep dive of challenges, special play-by-play punishment analysis, and bonus content.

· The complete “Impractical Jokers” catalogue is currently available for viewers to stream on HBO Max.

The CW Grants Early Renewals to 12 Shows, Including Walker Reboot

Just two weeks after its premiere on the network, the Jared Padalecki-fronted Walker, Texas Ranger reboot has proven to be enough of a hit for The CW as it is one of 12 shows to earn an early renewal from the network for the 2021-2022 season.

“Though we’re just a few weeks into the new season, we wanted to get a strategic head start on next season with these early renewals, which allows our production teams to start laying out story arcs and hiring staff, and at the same time, continues to provide us with a strong, stable schedule to build on for next season,” Mark Pedowitz, Chairman and CEO of The CW, said in a statement. “As The CW’s 2020-2021 season kicks into high gear, we are thrilled creatively with the direction of our first new shows out of the gate, Walker and Superman & Lois, that we wanted to order the additional episodes to complete their first seasons, and we are particularly pleased with the huge success of the launch of Walker, which debuted as our most watched series premiere in 5 years.”

In addition to netting a very early second season renewal, Walker has also been given an additional five episodes or its freshman season to bring up the total episode count to 18. While its latest DC series hasn’t received an official second season order, The CW has ordered an additional two episodes for Superman & Lois, bringing its total episode count to 15 in its first season.

Alongside the Padalecki-starring Western crime series, which scored the network its largest series premiere in five years, The CW has renewed sports drama All American for a fourth season, Batwoman for a third season, the Charmed reboot for a fourth season, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow for a seventh season, the Dynasty reboot for a fifth season, The Flash for an eighth season, In The Dark for a fourth season, Legacies for a fourth season, Nancy Drew for a third season, Riverdale for a sixth season and Roswell, New Mexico for a fourth season.

New Artist Spotlight: 1st Base Runner Is the New Electro Shoegaze Sound ‘All Thoughts’ Will Turn To

2

1st Base Runner is a new project from Austin-based artist Tim Husmann that only has two singles out so far in anticipation of his forthcoming album, Seven Years of Silence, but we can tell you already it’s going to be good. The “astral gothic” vibes of the electronic/dreampop/shoegaze rock hybrid tracks “All Thoughts” and “A Hymn” (IDLES cover) are instantly recognizable for their quality, passion and heart-rending honesty.

With no real new dream pop frontrunner laying claim to the last few years, an sound like 1st Base Runner’s was desperately needed by the shoegazers among us, especially the younger ones. Husmann seems to agree there was a need for this music to be out there.

It was something that had to be made. I had tried to suppress the concepts and ideas explored in the 8 tracks for several years. It is my willingness to be vulnerable and laid bare before others in an attempt to glimpse some fundamental truths about what it means to be here and to be present. It is an exploration of expectations and shortcomings and how they in turn will make us all the more uniquely human. No one gets out with clean hands, not on this ride, and not in this lifetime.

Vulnerability is absolutely right when looking at these first two tracks. “All Thoughts” is an absolute gut-punch of a track, with a painful, echoey guitar that sounds like the most delicious late 80s indie post punk and shoegaze. The gravely, Tom Waits-like voice with its complimentary minor keys and simple yet highly personal lyrics will send shivers down even the most steely goth spine. The electronic end of this track is also reminiscent of 80s and 90s dream pop a’la Joy Division, Dead Can Dance or New Order,  with little video vintage video game nods here and there, but it’s got a more modern, ravey vibe as well. The result is exactly the niche that needs filling in GenZ rock/EDM crossover music and the quality of production gives 1st Base Runner a real shot at doing just that.

“Hymn” is a cover Husmann just posted on Bandcamp and his YouTube page of the original track by IDLES. It’s unclear whether this cover will be on the upcoming album, but he brings the same openness and painful, beautiful vulnerability to his version of the already very emotive post punk anthem. The stripped-down, piano-accompanied version makes “A Hymn” even more post punk somehow. Nick Cave would be proud.

We here at Your EDM don’t often come out and say “follow this artist” (we fancy ourselves too cool), but seriously, follow this artist. The raw, emotional nature of 1st Base Runner’s first two tracks and, more than likely, the subsequent  Seven Years of Silence reaches an emotional itch in the current times that we’ve all been desperate to scratch. The beautiful heart-stomping that only good shoegaze or dream pop can give us is exactly what is called for as we all collectively heal from the isolation of 2020.

“All Thoughts” and “A Hymn” (cover) are both out now and can be streamed on Bandcamp. “All Thoughts” can also be streamed on Spotify. Check out 1st Base Runner’s YouTube page for hopefully more new videos leading up to the release of Seven Years of Silence.

Bottega Veneta’s Salon 01 Campaign Is an Homage to Glamorous Domestic Living

0

Much like the rest of the world, the global pandemic has forced the Italian fashion house Bottega Veneta to reassess its fashion calendar. Creative Director Daniel Lee showed his Salon 01 collection in London last December to a limited audience of VIP attendees like Skepta, Kanye West, and Lee’s musical muse Neneh Cherry at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre. Today, the brand released the accompanying campaign shot by Bottega’s regular collaborator Tyrone Lebon. The collection is accompanied by memorabilia in the form of books, records, and videos aimed to give a deeper look into the creative director’s creative process and inspirations. The collection as well as the campaign place heavy emphasis on the very timely idea of domestic living—easy ’60s-like glamorous silhouettes, fabrics reminiscent of snuggly blankets, and models mixing-and-matching with furniture. For the collection, Lee collaborated with fine artist Rosemarie Trockel on a book exploring the human relationships to clothes. Below, take a peek at the campaign featuring a Dalmatian dog, a semi-naked model, striking patterns, and of course Bottega Veneta’s eternal effortless sensuality. These glam clothes were made for lounging, and that’s just what they’ll do.

National Restaurant Association Releases 2021 State of the Restaurant Industry Report

20

Today, the National Restaurant Association released its 2021 State of the Restaurant Industry Report, which measures the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the restaurant industry and examines the current state of key pillars including technology and off-premises, labor, and menu trends across segments based on a survey of 6,000 restaurant operators and consumer preferences from a survey of 1,000 adults. The report also provides a look at the path to recovery for chains, franchises, and independents and the year of transition ahead.

Key findings regarding the impact of coronavirus on the restaurant industry include:

  • Restaurant and foodservice industry sales fell by $240 billion in 2020 from an expected level of $899 billion.
  • As of December 1, 2020, more than 110,000 eating and drinking places were closed for business temporarily, or for good.
  • The eating and drinking place sector finished 2020 nearly 2.5 million jobs below its pre-coronavirus level.

“As we approach the one-year mark of pandemic-related dining restrictions, we know that virtually every restaurant in every community has been impacted. Amid an ever-changing landscape of dining restrictions and widespread closures, restaurants found ways to adapt, keep people employed, and safely serve our guests,” said Tom Bené, President & CEO of the National Restaurant Association. “While we still have a long way to go, we are confident in the resilience of the industry’s workforce, operators, suppliers, and diners. The year ahead will be critical as we continue to advocate for much-needed recovery funds to help get our industry back on track. Working together as one, I am confident in our ability to continue safely serving our guests and supporting our communities.”

Accelerated Development and Adoption of Technology and Off-Premises

State and local mandates forced operators to make developments to streamline or enhance off-premises and contactless capabilities, and many restaurants across all segments have become more efficient as a result. The pandemic induced a widespread adoption of technology and off-premises use among groups that may not have otherwise engaged in off-premises. Takeout and delivery have become a part of people’s routines with 68% of consumers more likely to purchase takeout from a restaurant than before the pandemic and 53% of consumers that say takeout and delivery is essential to the way they live. Other key takeaways include:

  • 64% of delivery customers prefer to order directly from the restaurant and 18% prefer to order through a third-party service.
  • 72% of adults say it’s important their delivery orders come from a location that they can visit in person—as opposed to a virtual kitchen space.

Legacy Businesses Lost

Of restaurants that closed for good in 2020, the majority were well-established businesses and fixtures in their communities. These operators had been in business, on average, for 16 years, and 16% of them had been open for at least 30 years. Additional data on these businesses include:

  • They employed an average of 32 people; 17% employed at least 50 people before they closed.
  • 72% of restaurant owners who closed for good say it’s unlikely they’ll open another restaurant concept in the months or years ahead.
  • Only 48% think they’ll stay in the restaurant industry in some form in the months or years ahead.

Devastating Year for the Restaurant Workforce

The restaurant and foodservice industry were projected to provide 15.6 million jobs in 2020 representing 10% of all payroll jobs in the economy. The impact of the pandemic has caused staffing levels to fall across all restaurant and foodservice segments with restaurant employment below pre-pandemic levels in 47 states and D.C. Key figures on the restaurant workforce include:

  • 62% of fine dining operators and 54% of both family dining and casual dining operators say staffing levels are more than 20% below normal.
  • There are nearly two million fewer 16-to-34-year-olds in the labor force, the most prominent age cohort in the restaurant industry workforce.
  • Restaurants were hit harder than any other industry during the pandemic, and still have the longest climb back to pre-coronavirus employment levels.

Streamlined Menus with Comfort Food and Alcohol To Go

While restaurants continue to optimize and streamline operations, their menus prove no exception with 63% of fine dining operators and half of casual and family dining operators saying they have fewer items on the menu than before the pandemic. Consumers are equally influenced to choose one restaurant over another if the restaurant offers a good selection of comfort foods and/or dishes on the healthier side, but the availability of diet-specific fare such as vegan or gluten-free plays a lesser role in restaurant-choice criteria. The availability of alcohol to go with takeout orders, however, is an influence in restaurant choice.

Restaurants are meeting these demands with 1 in 5 family and casual dining operators adding comfort items and 7 in 10 full-service operators adding alcohol to go since March 2020. Consumers are also finding new ways to enjoy their favorite restaurants such as embracing bundled meals, restaurant subscription services, and meal kits. Key data points on food and beverage trends include:

  • 38% of on-premises and 33% of off-premises customers say their restaurant choices will be influenced by whether the menus include the comfort foods they crave.
  • 38% of on-premises customers say healthy choices would impact their restaurant choice.
  • 35% of off-premises customers—with millennials leading the category at 53%—are more likely to choose a restaurant if it offers the option of including alcoholic beverages with the to-go order.

Pent-Up Consumer Demand Remains High

There is no doubt consumers are ready to return to restaurants. Restaurants are an integral part of our social fabric, and 6 in 10 adults say restaurants are an essential part of their lifestyle. In late April 2020, 83% of adults said they were not eating on-premises at restaurants as often as they’d like, a big jump from the 45% reported in January 2020. Baby boomers really want to return to restaurants, beating out Gen Z adults and millennials who say they are not eating on-premises at restaurants as often as they’d like. Additional data that validate pent-up demand include:

  • 88% of adults enjoy going to restaurants and 85% of them say going out to a restaurant with family or friends is a better way to spend their leisure time than cooking (and cleaning) at home.
  • Nearly 8 in 10 adults say their favorite restaurant foods deliver flavor and taste sensations that just can’t be duplicated in the home kitchen.
  • A majority of adults across all generations say they are not eating at restaurants as often as they would like.

“Restaurants are the cornerstone of our communities, and our research shows a clear consumer desire to enjoy restaurants on-premises more than they have been able to during the pandemic. We’ve also found that even as the vaccine becomes more available and more social occasions return to restaurants, consumers will continue to desire expanded off-premises options going forward. Both will continue to be key for industry growth,” said Hudson Riehle, Senior Vice President, Research and Knowledge Group, National Restaurant Association. “With more than half of adults saying that restaurants are an essential part of their lifestyle, we are confident that, with time, the industry is positioned for successful recovery.”
