The Bells Were Ringing Out for Kirsty MacColl
Once upon a time—hard times, as it were—in an unrelenting, kick-you-when-you’re-down New York City, a real-life couple were struggling and fighting and having a thoroughly shit time. According to “Fairytale of New York” co-writer Jem Finer, this relatable and timeless dynamic became the basis for what some might consider one of the most fantastic and few-and-far-between-year-round holiday hits of all time. Pogues lead-singer Shane MacGowan went to work on the lyrics, and a twisted, rollicking as-only-the-Pogues-could-do-it gorgeous-in-spite-of-itself fairytale was born.
A band like the Pogues have managed to both define and defy tradition with insatiable poetry that includes: You’re an old slut on junk/ Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed/ You scumbag, you maggot/ You cheap lousy faggot/ Happy Christmas your arse/ I pray God it’s our last. Nope, it’s not “What Child is This?” or “Here Comes Santa Claus”. And for as easy as it seems to gurgle from well-coated throats now, in different hands—and with different voices—this would have been a tragic mess.
Produced by acclaimed Steve Lillywhite (U2, Rolling Stones) the song was hoping for a 1987 release, but with one problem—they suddenly found themselves without someone for MacGowan to sing with. At the time, Lillywhite was married to Kirsty MacColl, daughter of folk singer Ewan MacColl, who famously penned the hit “Dirty Old Town” made famous by the Dubliners and, later, the Pogues. Just a few years before, in 1983, Kirsty MacColl’s hit “They Don’t Know” had enjoyed a new life covered by Tracy Ullman, Ullman’s only song to reach the Billboard Top 40. MacColl was known and revered, but her career had stalled for many issues, including crippling stage fright. But Lillywhite worked with MacColl until they got the vocals just right before recording her part at their home studio. Her vocals were so damn good that MacGowan, already a fan, was forced to redo his own vocals to meet MacColl’s high bar. The result is a musical journey in over four minutes, with, somehow, if you choose to feel it, a sparkling glimmer of hope.
At Christmastime, or really anytime someone decides to blast this modern classic, it feels as if we’re experiencing MacGowan and MacColl going toe-to-toe in the present, eternally vibrant and at the ready. When she and Lillywhite divorced in 1994, they had two sons Jamie and Louis, and though she didn’t quite achieve the critical success of “Fairy Tale of New York”, she continued to write and sing and work, and those who knew her, loved her. MacColl was the whole package: intense talent combined with the determination and vulnerability of a fierce soldier.
On Dec. 18, 2000, a week before Christmas, she and her sons—Jamie, 15 and Louis, 13—were diving in a reef in Cozumel, Mexico, an area that restricted boats. But a speedboat did enter the area, and to save her son Jamie’s life, she pushed him out of the way and was instantly killed on impact.
MacColl was that warrior of unshakable voice and character. Every time you listen to “Fairytale of New York”, raise a glass and acknowledge, as the song says: Kristy, we’ve built our dreams around you.
Essential Workers of NYC Delivery

Following a string of e-bike robberies in the spring, Gustavo Ajche, a delivery worker from Guatemala, was messaging his fellow deliveristas in a WhatsApp group chat of workers in their neighborhood about how they could protect one another (those bikes, which they have to pay for themselves, can cost up to $2,000). The conversation shifted to how their already poor working conditions had worsened during the pandemic: a lack of PPE, nowhere to take breaks during lockdown, and meager pay. For these workers — who are considered independent contractors and sometimes paid below minimum wage — determining one’s take-home pay is often a confusing endeavor, as earnings vary wildly for each service: DoorDash lists its base pay as a range from $2 to about $10 per order (though some workers claim they often make more like $4), Relay’s base rate is roughly $11.80 per hour, and Grubhub uses a complicated calculation based on time spent and miles traveled. At times, between waiting at the restaurant and having to bike up to 70 blocks to bring food to diners’ doors, workers can spend an entire hour completing a single order. “I have to support my wife, my son, and another baby on the way. I worry if I get sick,” says Jonán Huerta, a deliverista from Mexico. “Who’s going to help me with my rent? There’s no support.”
“We take care of each other. We’ve created our own network,” Ajche says in Spanish. He originally went to the Worker’s Justice Project (he’s a longtime member) in search of financial support for workers who were struggling, but he ended up with a broader organizing plan — and Los Deliveristas Unidos was born. Ajche, Huerta, and their fellow immigrant workers pictured here are among the estimated 80,000 deliveristas in the city right now, a number that has grown as unemployed members of the restaurant and hospitality industries have turned to delivery apps to survive. On October 15, this group and close to a thousand others protested for the first time to demand better pay and improved worker protections. Together, they rode from 72nd Street down to City Hall, chanting “Sin nosotros, nadie come” (“Without us, no one eats”). Following reports of these organizing efforts, DoorDash announced on December 16 that it’s taking measures to improve deliveristas’ working conditions, including providing free reflective gear and getting almost 200 restaurants to agree to make their restrooms available to workers. But, according to The City, New York City couriers weren’t consulted, and some remain skeptical about the changes.
Now that winter has arrived and indoor dining is again shut down, they’re once more being called to the front lines. “After eight months without economic relief and working under inhumane conditions, we are tired,” Huerta says. “It’s time to raise our voices.”

WATCH: Whitney Houston And Bobbi Kristina Brown Documentary Comes To Lifetime | Celebrities

Another documentary about Whitney Houston is preparing for release, and this one will focus on the parallel lives and tragic deaths of the singer and her only child, daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown.
Whitney Houston & Bobbi Kristina: Didn’t We Almost Have It All premieres on Saturday, February 6 at 8 p.m. EST on Lifetime, and the network shared a teaser of the trailer ahead of its air date.

In the clip, people close to Houston such as Perri “Pebbles” Reid, Randy Jackson and others spoke about Houston’s troubled childhood, her tragic death in 2012 and the unfortunate cycle of events that wormed its way into the life of her daughter, Bobbi Kristina, who died of an apparent drug overdose just three years after her mother, in a chillingly similar manner.
Whitney Houston died on February 11, 2012 at age 48. She was found unresponsive in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California just hours before she was scheduled to perform at Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy Gala. Three years later, on January 31, 2015, ther daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown (whose father is Houston’s ex-husband singer Bobby Brown) was found unresponsive in the bathtub of her Georgia condo and rushed to the hospital. After spending six months in a coma, she died on July 26, 2015 at the age of 22.
Bobbi Kristina’s boyfriend Nick Gordon, who Houston raised as a son, was suspected of foul play in her death. He died of a heroin overdose on January 1, 2020.

Lyrics
How many times do I have to try to tell you
That I’m sorry for the things I’ve done
But when I start to try to tell you
That’s when you have to tell me
Hey… this kind of trouble’s only just begun
I tell myself too many times
Why don’t you ever learn to keep your big mouth shut
That’s why it hurts so bad to hear the words
That keep on falling from your mouth
Falling from your mouth
Falling from your mouth
Tell me
Why
Why
I may be mad
I may be blind
I may be viciously unkind
But I can still read what you’re thinking
And I’ve heard it said too many times
That you’d be better off
Besides
Why can’t you see this boat is sinking
(This boat is sinking, this boat is sinking)
Let’s go down to the water’s edge
And we can cast away those doubts
Some things are better left unsaid
But they still turn me inside out
Turning inside out turning inside out
Tell me
Why
Tell me
Why
This is the book I never read
These are the words I never said
This is the path I’ll never tread
These are the dreams I’ll dream instead
This is the joy that’s seldom spread
These are the tears
The tears we shed
This is the fear
This is the dread
These are the contents of my head
And these are the years that we have spent
And this is what they represent
And this is how I feel
Do you know how I feel?
‘Cause I don’t think you know how I feel
I don’t think you know what I feel
I don’t think you know what I feel
You don’t know what I feel
