Christopher Nolan Slams Warner Bros. Deal, Calling HBO Max “the Worst”

0

Warner Bros. may have damaged one of its most valuable filmmaker relationships with its recent controversial decision regarding 2021 theatrical releases.

Christopher Nolan, who has released all of his films with the studio since Insomnia in 2002, blasted the company in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter on Monday, Dec. 7. He offered his reaction to Warner Bros.’ announcement on Thursday, Dec. 3 that its entire 2021 film slate would debut on streaming service HBO Max on the same day as the movies hit theaters, rather than waiting the customary months-long window for home releases.

“Some of our industry’s biggest filmmakers and most important movie stars went to bed the night before thinking they were working for the greatest movie studio and woke up to find out they were working for the worst streaming service,” Nolan said.

The 50-year-old Dunkirk director made it clear that he sees the decision as hurting the cinematic experience, not to mention Warner Bros.’ bottom line.

“Warner Bros. had an incredible machine for getting a filmmaker’s work out everywhere, both in theaters and in the home, and they are dismantling it as we speak,” he continued. “They don’t even understand what they’re losing. Their decision makes no economic sense, and even the most casual Wall Street investor can see the difference between disruption and dysfunction.”

Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap inks first-look TV deal at Amazon

After returning to the world of television in an executive producer and cameo position last year, Margot Robbie is keeping her small screen work alive as her co-founded production banner LuckyChap Entertainment has inked a new first-look TV deal with Amazon Studios, according to Variety.

The banner, founded in 2014 by Robbie, husband Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr, previously inked a first-look deal in film and television with Warner Bros., though will now see the former three work with Amazon Studios to create series projects to premiere on the streaming platform alongside Brett Hedblom, LuckyChap’s vice president of television.

“We are so thrilled to be partnering with Amazon Studios to bring original content to the ever-burgeoning television landscape,” Robbie, Ackerley, and McNamara said in a statement. “Our hope with LuckyChap has always been to challenge narrative conformity whilst offering a platform to exciting and often over-looked voices. In Amazon we have a cultural partner who shares our passion for storytelling and through its global reach allows us and our collaborators to reach as many viewers as possible. This is the start of a very exciting journey for the company and one that we are incredibly proud to be taking with the wonderful Amazon team.”

The announcement comes as LuckyChap is currently in production on the Margaret Qualley-starring Netflix dramedy Maid, which is set to wrap in March, as well as a second season of Hulu’s feminist comedy Dollface, in which Robbie made a cameo appearance in the first season’s eighth episode.

“LuckyChap has produced sharply original, smart, and wholly engaging content over the past several years, across an incredible range of genres, and centering multifaceted, unique female characters,” Albert Cheng, COO and co-head of Television for Amazon Studios, said in a statement. “We’ve very excited for the chance to work with Tom, Josey, Margot, and Brett to create new series with the same kind of vision and focus for our Prime Video customers.”

On the film side of things, LuckyChap previously worked on the Robbie-fronted Birds of Prey, I, Tonya, Dreamland and Terminal and are currently gearing up for the release of the Carey Mulligan-led black comedy thriller Promising Young Woman, which is currently slated for a Christmas Day release, and a film adaptation of the Barbie doll, with Margot set to star, Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig set to pen the script and Gerwig in talks to helm.

Morning Chillstep Music — Beautiful Awakening Mix

2

Does music facilitate the process of waking up?

There is research by psychologist David M. Greenberg that shows the effect of tunes that gradually pick up their pace. He’s discovered that listening to music that starts off slow and quiet and builds to faster, more upbeat songs are best suited to help the brain work its way out of sleep inertia. Sleep inertia is the state of grogginess lasting fifteen to thirty minutes after you wake up. But it’s not a secret that many people feel sleepy for a larger period of time in the morning. If that is your case, you may need a wider choice of awakening melodies than the initial Greenberg’s playlist. With this thought in mind we made a playlist of chillstep tracks which you can also use at the beginning of your working day.

Chillstep is a baby of Ambient and beats from 2-step and Dubstep. It is often referred to by listeners as “Melodic Dubstep” as it is not that aggressive, focusing on the melody rather than on a complex beat.

Remember that mornings are crucial for your success as they set the tone for the whole day lying ahead. This energetic upbeat music will definitely make your day brighter. Don’t forget to go back to comments and share thoughts on what could be your perfect morning music.

We have created a new channel and we really need your help.

Matthew Cherry Adds Unique Perspective To Racial Injustice Episode Of CBS’s ‘The Unicorn’

0

Written by Dustin Seibert

The “very special” episode of any sitcom is a relic of days past, forever relegated to our favorite shows that have passed into syndication heaven (or Hell, depending on your perspective). It is, however, arguably ill-conceived to shoot new sitcom episodes in 2020 while completely disregarding the many topical issues the year has wrought.

Such was the mindset of the cast and writers of CBS’s “The Unicorn”, which filmed part of its second season in the summer of 2020, during an unprecedented social uprising as a result of the death of George Floyd by white police officer Derek Chauvin. “Unicorn” star Omar Miller asked the writer’s room if they had any plans to address the protests, to which writer Howard Jordan, Jr., who is Black, pitched his concept: White people facing their privilege while also working towards a  better understanding of their allyship for their Black friends.

Not only was the topic greenlit, but producers asked Matthew Cherry to return to the director’s chair after helming an episode of the pilot season. A former NFL player turned film writer, director and producer, Cherry nabbed an Academy Award for his Issa Rae-voiced 2019 animated short film Hair Love, which is being converted into a miniseries for HBO.

Cherry talked to BET.com about his experiences directing the episode (which aired Thursday, Dec. 3) and how the subject matter connects so poignantly to his own upbringing.

BET.com: Do you think you were chosen to do this episode because you’re Black?

Matthew Cherry: Oftentimes, directors don’t have much say in what episodes we’re assigned to, but I do think on the producer side of things, they’re always thinking of people with certain sensibilities who can bring things to the table. Omar (Miller) [who plays Ben] and Maya Lynne (Robinson) [who plays Michelle] are good friends of mine, and, knowing that this was going to be a bit of a sensitive topic, I think it just made sense that this was the episode this season that I ended up directing.

BET.com: In this episode called, “It’s The Thought That Counts,” the central conflict involves Forrest (played by Rob Corddry) gifting a water gun to Noah (played by Devin Bright), and Noah’s parents’ concern about their adolescent Black son possessing anything resembling a gun. Have you ever endured any situations similar to this?

Matthew Cherry: I remember one situation in particular: I played three sports for a high school called Loyola Academy (in the Chicago suburbs). I trained in the summer to play these sports all year long. I was jogging in the neighborhood that I lived in all my life wearing athletic gear, and someone actually called the police. I had to be like 13, 14 years old, like any Black kid wearing athletic gear and weird shoes, and for whatever reason people saw that as a threat. Luckily nothing bad came out of it, but it was definitely one of those reminders. I think Howard and the writer’s room really did a great job of taking a real-life issue and putting some candy with the medicine, since there are light moments [in the episode] as well.

BET.com: Have you seen any other sitcoms successfully tackling this material, Black writers or not?

Matthew Cherry: The conversation about being a proper ally is one that I haven’t seen really tackled in the television space, which is why this episode was so exciting, especially given some networks are not as likely to take a big swing on something like this. It’s really cool that CBS and everyone in the studio was behind having this real conversation. Obviously there are certain nuances that I and people like Howard can bring to the table to increase the authenticity. Hopefully, topics can be explored from writers of all colors, ethnicities and sexual orientations and everything in between. They can’t all just be coming from one lens.

BET.com: Is it a challenge to approach this topical material without coming off as preachy?

Matthew Cherry: In this particular episode, we’re dealing with an issue very specific to the Black experience. But these are all human conversations; in a future episode, it could be something Rob and Michaela’s (Watkins) characters are dealing with that they need to bring Omar and Maya Lynne’s characters in on. You just tell the story and recognize that there’s an important conversation to be had.

When we were shooting, there were real emotions that were coming up; when I see that, I want to give the actors the freedom to really go there and to not keep doing take after take as that stays bottled up. In the final cut of the episode, we used the takes where we gave Maya Lynne the freedom to add her personal experiences [to the dialogue]. It made it much more authentic. When you’re dealing with authentic human emotions and experiences, I don’t think there’s any such thing as preachy.

Tenet’s Christopher Nolan Bluntly Responds To Warner Bros’ HBO Max Release Plan

0

That being said, this could be a situation where the metaphorical genie can’t be put back in the bottle. We’ll just have to wait and see how Warner Bros’ movies do next year playing both in theaters and on HBO Max, but even once life settles down on the coronavirus front, it’s entirely possible that things we’ve simply hit a point where a ‘new normal’ will take over in the theatrical realm. For now though, Christopher Nolan is disappointed in how Warner Bros handled this HBO Max rollout, and as laid out by THR, he’s not the only filmmaker who feels that way.
