1st Base Runner Is the New ‘Night Stalker’ With 5th EP in Two Years [Video]

0

Night Stalker is an interesting choice of title for 1st Base Runner’s fifth EP, given the Netflix bioseries of the same name being so popular. Those of us old enough to remember, especially if you lived in Southern California at the time, may have even more of a visceral reaction to this EP and the music attached to it. Apparently this was on purpose.

The resurrected true crime Netflix story of serial killer Richard Ramirez, tagged by the media in the 80s as the Nightstalker, means that GenX kids of Los Angeles and Orange County who were told to keep their windows closed at night ad nauseam are now not the only ones familiar with said story. It’s unknown whether 1st Base Runner was inspired by the series or is, in fact, one of those GenX children, but Night Stalker is easily his darkest offering to-date.

With lashings of goth bands like Bauhaus and post-punk acts like Joy Division, Love and Rockets and Tom Waits heretofore prevalent in his music, it likely wasn’t a very difficult move for 1st Base Runner to tip over into darker territory. Night Stalker is nonetheless a pretty stark change. Only a little bit of the characteristic shoegazey guitars are left on this EP. Even then, in tracks like “In the Neighborhood” and “Dark Drive Through the Canyon” the guitars are tuned towards the maudelin and/or eerie electronic sound design, which gives this work a sense of madness and desolation only hinted at in previous works.

Another 1st Base Runner signature has always been that even in the most emotionally difficult tracks, there’s been a small hint of hope or appreciation, mostly in the way the harmonies meld together to create and uplifting tilt to the music. That hint is still there in Night Stalker but it generally feels at war with the creepier parts of the tracks, so instead of harmony we get discord or, as with the title track, confusion and fear. This track lives up to is title, and genuinely feels like a sonic representation of what the inside of a serial killer’s mind might feel like. It’s visceral, pogniant and makes a strong case for not giving in to intrusive thoughts. One could say there’s a little relief with closing track “The Serpent and Space,” but one could also see it as simply the peace and release those who have given in to their demons feel once the evil deed is done.

As with all !st Base Runner releases, Night Stalker was released with a beautiful and comparably visceral video for the track “Dark Drive Through the Canyon,” directed by the prolific Dilly Gent of Son&Heir Productions and Radiohead fame. Dilly has been creative director on a number of 1st Base Runner’s video projects but this has been the first one she’s shot hands-on. With the juxtaposiion of terrifying and sublime action and imagery in the video and the sort of motion stop vs compositional shot vibe she created, it’s safe to say it was a good decision that she picked up the camera. A complex track like “Dark Drive…” needed a delicate and skilled hand with the video to match what the artist was trying to say, and Gent captured it perfectly.

It really is sobering, the level of quality and creativity 1st Base Runner has managed to keep over the last two years since he released his initial “All Thoughts” single and subequent Seven Years of Silence album. The back story behind this project and everything Tim Husmann, the artist behind 1st Base Runner, has been through would indicate he likely has many more stories to tell. The fact that he’s dug even deeper on Night Stalker to explore the darker parts of humanity means he’s far from finished.

Night Stalker is out now and can be streamed on Spotify. Check out 1st Base Runner’s YouTube channel for more lush videos and more on his story.

A Taste of Orleans’

0

A Taste of Orleans’

by C Reid

Sometimes one can revisit an establishment purely because the food was simply irrepressible—meaning the senses were penetrated under waves of spices and aromas that only arise from intervals of basting. Well, one mercurial gem nestled in the heart of Jefferson Park…conjure Ricky and Doughboy’s intemperate enclave off of Crenshaw. The hidden South clinging on the edge of South Central. Best believe some treks are truly worth it before night break.

Does anyone truly care for the propped-up edifice that is exposition pertaining to locale/setting? I venture to say a defiant No to that lone audience of hyper-critical foodies, still hanging with me and my omnipresent muse. We will follow the pantheon of Raymond Carver and adhere to the cliched adage: ‘Less is more.’ Moving east towards a corridor of leathered-laden booths, the hostess seated me and my insatiate compatriots with an impressive bevy of menus, poised, artfully in the center.

The Food

Upon scanning a litany of delicacies with the algid scrutiny reminiscent of Ness, my eyes fixated on three words: Large Filet Gumbo. I am a connoisseur of Gumbo and all its demure components that manifest to a scintillating respite of heaven. Boudin sausage, diced onions, shrimp, shredded chicken, sage, paprika, black pepper, bouillon…the other spices fold in and one remembers the importance of monikers later upon reflection.

Traversing forward, the delicate, gold-kissed tendrils of mac n’ cheese dangled on my fork, changing hues with every stab of my instrument. The taste hearkens back to the earthiness of my mother’s cooking, perfectly seasoned and enticing the tongue ever more.

The aromatic lull of a platter of charbroiled oysters stings ardently through the other dishes, splayed across the table. One bite pulled you in the undertow, scouring for more fare in the currents tugging below. The crisp skin of the oysters, intermingled with the Old Bay seasoning, overtook all trite conversations, sending the palate to a netherworld of gastronomical delicacies.

They were miles beyond good: benevolent morsels. What one envisions manna would taste when paired with ambrosia…

There is a reason besides speeding towards USC to barrel down Jefferson Avenue—going east. Gaze towards the right and you just might glimpse a neon sign, pulsating the outlined surnames: Harold & Belles.

The Way of Water Box Office Projections Preview Opening

0

The first Avatar has the rare distinction of being the highest-grossing film of all time, and while its sequel likely won’t hit those highs, it is still expected to do extremely well at the box office.

RELATED: Avatar: The Way of Water Final Trailer Debuts Ahead of December Release

According to early tracking data from Variety, Avatar: The Way of Water is expected to open to at least $150 million domestically when it premieres next month. Their report notes that that number could also soar even higher, to upwards of $175 million. While these numbers are significantly higher than Avatar‘s original box office debut (which landed at about $77 million), the hype and expectations for The Way of Water are significantly higher.

Due to the much higher budget that the sequel film carries — it’s estimated that the budget for The Way of Water is somewhere between $350 million and $400 million — the box office return must be greater to earn its money back. According to James Cameron in an interview with GQ, the sequel needs to be one of the highest-grossing films of all time just to “break even,” a goal that may be extremely lofty but has been done by Cameron before.

The sequel is directed and co-written by James Cameron. It features the return of Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, Stephen Lang, Matt Gerald, and Sigourney Weaver. Additional cast members include Kate Winslet, Edie Falco, Michelle Yeoh, Vin Diesel, Jemaine Clement, and Oona Chaplin, alongside a slate of young actors.

“Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure,” says the official synopsis.

Three additional films are planned, with Avatar 3 tentatively scheduled for December 20, 2024, Avatar 4 set for December 18, 2026, and Avatar 5 on December 22, 2028.

U.S. Senators to Investigate Ticketmaster’s Dominance Over Concert Ticket Sales

0

U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Mike Lee will lead a new subcommittee investigating the lack of competition in ticketing markets. Klobuchar stressed the need to scrutinize Ticketmaster’s dominance over the concert ticket market in light of chaotic Taylor Swift Eras Tour sales last week. “Ticketmaster’s website failed hundreds of thousands of fans hoping to purchase concert tickets,” Klobuchar said. “The high fees, site disruptions, and cancellations that customers experienced shows how Ticketmaster’s dominant market position means the company does not face any pressure to continually innovate and improve.”

Ticketmaster blamed unprecedented demand and a “staggering number of bot attacks” for the Eras Tour fiasco, ultimately canceling a scheduled on-sale date for the remaining tickets. The company apologized to Swift, who had written a pointed statement that read, in part, “It’s really difficult for me to trust an outside entity with these relationships and loyalties, and excruciating for me to just watch mistakes happen with no recourse.” She added, “I’m not going to make excuses for anyone because we asked them, multiple times, if they could handle this kind of demand and we were assured they could.”

Two days after the initial debacle, Klobuchar took up the cause in a letter linking Ticketmaster’s “dramatic service failures” to its “power in the primary ticket market.” Klobuchar, a Democrat from Minnesota, chairs the Senate judiciary subcommittee on competition policy, antitrust, and consumer rights, of which Lee, a Utah Republican, is a ranking member. The hearing date has not yet been set.

Top Five Things to Do in LA During Thanksgiving

Top Five Things to Do in LA During Thanksgiving

What to do in the City of Angels on the Day of the Turkey or as most Americans call it – Thanksgiving! The day the Native American taught the new settlers how to survive those brutal New England winters, and to reward them, they took their land and turkeys – allegedly. In the land of beaches and overpriced gasoline, we also celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. Here are five things to do in the City of Angels on Turkey Day. How do you say ‘gobble, gobble’ in Espanol?

5. Enchanted: Forest of Light

Yes. We are back at the Enchanted Forest of Lights at La Canada, California. Check out these magically illuminated exhibitions once again, only this time it’s Thanksgiving themed. Come to the Descanso Gardens and experience the electrically inspired, luminescent forest, where the artful decoration will mesmerize your visual pallet with brightly colored trees, lit up against the Los Angeles night sky; while, the sound effects baptize your eardrums with joyfully, melodic sounds. If you want to treat two of your major senses, check out the Enchanted Forest: Forest of Lights during the Thanksgiving holiday.

4. Los Angeles Auto Show

After gorging yourself on a flightless bird, drive or Uber down to the Los Angeles Auto Show. It’s there for ten days, so do not hesitate or you will miss out on this very cool collection of both foreign and domestic cars. Rub shoulders with other car aficionados, as well as celebrities and manufacturers, putting their babies on display. Test out the cars of the future on the indoor, EV track and gaze at the magnificent modern innovations in the automotive industry. But, let your dinner settle first. Come to the Los Angeles Auto Show off of Wilshire.

3. Holiday Ice Rink Pershing Square

Yes, there is other ice in LA besides the diamond stores that dot the downtown landscape. If you go up the street to Pershing Square, named after General Pershing, you will notice an ice rink in the middle of the big building. After three years, the outdoor ice rink has made its return – to delight the beach loving masses. Come skate in a circle and pretend it’s actually wintertime in Los Angeles. Remember, it is the land of make believe. Make believe you’re in Michigan with palms trees.

2) Lightscape

After a fulfilling Thanksgiving meal, travel to the Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanical Garden in Arcadia for Lightscape. A mile long set up of eclectically illumination trees is a treat for the eyes, after watching hours of grueling football, on the telly. Come check out the moonlight forest and the many original installations that have made Lightscape: a go-to around the holidays. So, if you like bright lights, come down to Arcadia. Don’t wear your sunglasses at night.

Turkey Trot

A LA staple. You want to make room before you abuse your stomach with mounds of turkey and mashed potatoes. Got you, check out the Turkey Trot. Come down to Spring Street located in the Downtown Historic District of Los Angeles. The Turkey Trot is on Spring street west, past the Disney Concert Hall. The race starts and finishes in front of City Hall, so meet us with the rest of the ‘gobble, gobble’ aficionados. Be there early to pick up your packet at 6:30 am. So, come on down and get your Trot on….

This Jazz Piano Tutorial is about Afro-Cuban Latin Jazz.

Latin Jazz, as the name implies, is Jazz that uses rhythms derived from Latin American music. There are two main categories of Latin Jazz:
– Afro-Cuban Jazz – based on Cuban music with genres like mambo, cha-cha and salsa & popular in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s (sometimes referred to as Cubop)
– Afro-Brazilian Jazz – based on Brazilian music with genres like the bossa-nova and samba & popular in the 1960’s.

In Afro-Cuban Jazz, every instrument is allocated a particular rhythm which they music play throughout the entire song, with little to no variation. All these different rhythms then mesh and combine together to create an Afro-Cuban feel or groove. And the most important of these rhythms is the clave rhythm.
