Taste Test: Pickle Rick Miracle Seltzer

Like this, but with bubbles!
Photo: Kativ/Getty Images
Every few years, someone observes, correctly, that there is a dearth of savory beverages. âWhere Are the Savory Sodas?â wondered Serious Eats in 2012. Six years later, Beverage Daily suggested they were coming. Yet here we are, still drinking natural essences of fruit. Where seltzer is concerned, there is lemon and raspberry and pamplemousse and pineapple pomelo. There is lime, and there is tangerine, and there is even coconut. But there are no vegetal flavors; there are no lightly salinated brines to speak of.
This scarcity in the market is why I was intrigued when somebody involved with Cartoon Networkâs publicity department offered to send me a 12-pack of Pickle Rick Miracle Seltzer, a pickle-juice-flavored carbonated beverage designed to appeal to fans of the television program Rick and Morty. I am not a fan of the television program Rick and Morty, mostly because I have never seen it, although I did once take a screenwriting class with a man who was intensely working on a Rick and Morty spec script, so I feel I at least have a handle on its act structure. I am, however, extremely invested in seltzer. It is important to me to be on the forefront of seltzer innovation. Who am I to say no to the future?
That same afternoon, a TaskRabbit courier arrived at my apartment bearing a pickle-colored box of pickle-flavored cans.
Pickle Rick Miracle Seltzer is a branded stunt, meant to promote the Adult Swim Festival, which is now over. But while festivals are fleeting, seltzer is forever, except in this case, because it is available for a limited time. You can buy your own 12-pack for $24, or pay $75 for a 12-pack and a tie-dyed pickle tote and a matching dad cap. It is a collaboration between Adult Swim, the seltzer brand Miracle Seltzer, and a âhydration companyâ called Pickle Juice, whose target audience is â surprisingly? â endurance athletes. Did you know 2.5 ounces of Pickle JuiceÂź Stops Muscle Cramps Immediately? I learned that on its website. Itâs all in the electrolytes.
Do I want a pickle-flavored seltzer? That is the wrong question. âPeople donât know what they want until you show it to them,â Steve Jobs once said. I have never had a craving for pickle seltzer, itâs true, but perhaps that is because nobody has ever shown it to me. That has changed.
When you crack a can of Pickle Rick, the smell is overwhelmingly pickle. It is the essence of pickle. It is eau de pickle. It is destabilizing, all that pickle. But it is not oppressive. It is profoundly picklish, but not aggressively picklish. It is not an affront, but a fact: Oh, wow, you think. Thatâs pickle.
A 12-pack costs $24.

I sipped. Huh, I thought. Hmmm. It tasted as it smelled: unequivocally pickle-esque. Oh, I thought. Humph. The carbonation was LaCroix-level, prominent but not as sharp as I prefer in most non-pickle settings. The flavor was, as previously mentioned, âpickle.â
Indeed, that is because of the ingredients: filtered water, organic vinegar, salt, organic dill oil, potassium, zinc, vitamin C, and vitamin E. It is pure pickle, without the base note of a vegetable. Instead of a cucumber pickle, what you have here is a water pickle. I sipped and sipped again. It was less briny than Iâd expected, less salty, the vinegar less prominent.
I finished one can and started another. I did not lose the taste of pickle so much as I adjusted to it. This is life now, I thought, gently huffing organic dill oil.
What is good? What is bad? Was it really so pickle-y, or was the giant cartoon pickle on the can playing a trick on my brain? Is it like an actual pickle, I wondered, sipping. Or is it like a pickle-flavored Kettle Chip? If all you think about are pickles, it is easy to lose perspective.
Eventually, I decided I needed a control, so, for science, I mixed plain seltzer with juice from a jar of pickles. It was remarkably similar. I tried it with some whiskey, to see if it would taste like a pickleback, but what it tasted like was whiskey, and that was also fine.
I forced a friend to try the pickle seltzer, sitting on my stoop. âThatâs kind of good!â she said. âI mean, itâs something!â
It is. It is something. It is novel. It is fun. Arguably, it is the most exciting thing that has happened to me in weeks. Pickle Rick was refreshing, she said, but she probably wouldnât finish it. âI drank a lot though!â she assured me.
I, too, drank a lot. I have, as of current count, consumed eight cans of the stuff, hoping to come to a definitive conclusion. âPickle seltzer is great!â I would like to say. Or, âPickle seltzer is vile!â But it is neither. It does not fit easily into a standard good/bad framework, because there is so little to compare it to.
Instead, I would describe our relationship as âcompanionable.â I have yet to wake up craving pickle seltzer, but I will be sad when it is gone. It is a new sensation â pickle! â and that, as it turns out, is what I want right now. I donât need it to be âgood,â exactly. I just need it to be something. It is. More than anything else, pickle-flavored seltzer really is something.

Imagine waking up in a world where a pandemic has broken out, which strikes with no rhyme or reason, and causes its victims to lose their memories. Teena Marie – "Miracles Need Wings To Fly".wmv
Ooh…hoo…hoo…hoo…hoo…hoo…yeah…
Last night I saw a shooting star fall from the sky
I thought of you and wished you here
I tried to see your face to free you in your dreams
But miracles need wings to fly
Do you understand a heart that beats for you
A love that knows no one but you
I say a little prayer each night and I try not to cry
‘Cause miracles need wings to fly
[Miracles need wings to fly, wings to fly]
Miracles need wings to fly
Miracles need wings to fly
[Miracles need wings to fly, wings to fly]
Miracles need wings to fly
Last night I couldn’t sleep, I didn’t even try
I called your name so desperately [So desperately]
I tried to kiss your lips, invade your private dreams
But miracles need wings to fly
Do you understand the hurt that has no end
A love that wants to be more than just your friend
I say a little prayer at night and, yes, sometimes I sigh
‘Cause miracles need wings to fly
[Miracles need wings to fly, wings to fly]
Miracles need wings to fly
Miracles need wings to fly
[Miracles need wings to fly, wings to fly]
Miracles need wings to fly
Do you understand my heart, understand my pain, listen
Do you understand, my dear, when you play those games
Do you understand my hurt, understand my care
Do you understand my mind, when I’m always there, oh
Miracles need wings to fly
And that’s why
I keep my head up to the sky
Miracles need wings to fly
And that’s why
Eagles spread their wings to the sky, oh, hey…hey… hey…
Miracles need wings to fly
And that’s why
I keep my head up to the sky
Hey…hey…hey…keep your head to the sky (To the sky)

Where to Order Thanksgiving Dinner in NYC

Take your turkey to-go.
Photo: H. Armstrong Roberts/ClassicStock/Getty Images
With everything thatâs happening right now, taking a moment to give thanks for what remains of the good stuff â your health, family, freedom, the future â feels as crucial as ever. That being said, Thanksgiving in 2020 is going to be hard. You canât get drunk with all of your crazy cousins. You canât sit around a table with ten of your favorite friends. You can, however, still eat too much turkey, and try a new take on stuffing, and pound a pumpkin-cheesecake square that will make you weak in the knees. Here is a list to help facilitate a holiday meal in 2020, whether youâre alone, or with a loved one, or trying to ensure that someone in need ends their Thanksgiving with a warm, full belly. These are some of our favorite takeout options for a responsible, yet delectable, holiday at home.
Poppyâs BK
Why we love it: Because itâs straightforward and delicious.
Brooklynâs catering darling, Poppyâs, has a terrific takeout menu that includes favorites like their Brussels sprouts and green beans with molasses and fried shallots, pre-brined rotisserie chickens, and a large assortment of pies and sweets. You can even tack on a flower bouquet if needed. Their food never disappoints, they deliver anywhere in NYC and the Hamptons, and thereâs something for every budget.
Evelynâs Kitchen
Why we love it: Because itâs good food for a great cause.
This small but mighty cafĂ© and bakery located in East Harlem, specializing in sophisticated comfort food and desserts, is offering full Thanksgiving meals for pickup, including main dishes, sides, and desserts. You can browse this yearâs menu here and view the ordering page here. EK is also working with schools and organizations within food-insecure communities to donate meals to those in need. Meals for donation are able to be purchased directly on their website.
Edyâs Grocer
Why we love it: Because we all need some innovative spins on Thanksgiving classics.
This Lebanese-influenced grocer and deli in Greenpoint now accepts orders for their Edyâs Friendsgiving takeout menu. Itâs a âheat and serveâ family meal, serving six-plus people, for $295. The menu features various mezzes like babaganoush and butternut-squash dip with curry, plus mains such as zaâata-spiced turkey and, of course, a Mediterranean take on mashed potatoes.
The CaribDivaCompany
Why we love it: Because of three words: Rum-braised turkey.
CaribDivaâs super-user-friendly website allows you to customize your meal in terms of entrees, sides, beverages and size of your party. Proteins include herb-roasted chicken with corn bread stuffing, or â yes â rum-braised turkey. If youâre celebrating for two, âA Little Tingâ for $60 will feed you on Thanksgiving and leave you with great leftovers for the next few days.
The Dutch Â
Why we love it: Because itâs a classic meal from one of Manhattanâs most solid restaurants.
The Dutch has done a bang-up job at transitioning from a Soho clubhouse to a consistently delicious takeout option. Their oven-ready Thanksgiving takeout â which is, relatively speaking, a good deal at $85 per person â features organic roast turkey with mushrooms and maple chestnuts, mashed potato with rich turkey gravy, Brussels sprouts with bacon and horseradish, and one of the best fall salads in town made with kale, candied pecan, apple and tĂȘte de moine. The meal also includes apple pie with cinnamon ice cream.
Pulkies at Dekalb Market
Why we love it: Because itâs barbecue!
In addition to the joy of saying âpulkiesâ (which is Yiddish for the adorable chubby thighs on a baby), this Jewish-style BBQ joint is offering a âTurkey Dinnerâ for $200, which feeds four to six people and includes: pimento cheese, endive and apple âcharosetâ salad, barbecued turkey breast, and âpulledâ turkey. Plus sides like braised kale, mashed sweet potatoes, and honey-butter cornbread. Thereâs a vegetarian alternative too. The deadline to place an order is Sunday, November 22, and you can pick up at Dekalb Market on November 25 or and 26.
Alta Calidad
Why we love it: Because Mexican might be the perfect Thanksgiving cuisine.
Chef Akhtar Nawabâs Prospect Heights cantina has a set, $65-per-person to-go menu that rethinks what a traditional turkey-day spread can be. Thereâs guajillo-glazed turkey breast, queso cornbread, cranberry mole, and â for dessert â a pumpkin tres leches cake that will almost definitely be better than any pie youâd make yourself.
Loring Place
Why we love it: Because youâll still get to âcookâ a little bit.
This is the moment for the âMeal Kitâ and no one is doing it better than Loring Place on Thanksgiving. For $175, the Thanksgiving Dinner Kit feeds four, with simple prep and heating instructions. It includes gem lettuces with sesame dressing, roasted turkey breast, turkey pot pie, spiced acorn squash, roasted Brussels, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry-pear chutney, cider gravy. and cookies.
Reverence
Why we love it: Because they take Thanksgiving seriously, so you donât have to.
This Harlem trailblazer has another Thanksgiving Kit that they describe as âa way to bring sanity and enjoyment to those you love this Thanksgiving.â The âChefsgivingâ kit can feed six, and it includes one Local Heritage Turkey to finish cooking with all the âfixins,â appetizers, sides, and dessert. Suggested paired wines and video instructions are a bonus, as is the âWhat to do with the leftovers?â virtual cooking class for all Chefsgiving purchases on the 27th. Cut off for orders is set for the 20th, if they donât sell out first. Each kit costs $325.
The Musket Room
Why we love it: Because itâs just luxurious enough.
The Musket Room and executive chef Mary Attea have a comprehensive, $85 per person feast that includes butternut squash soup with cardamom & coconut, foie gras and prune bread stuffing, and roasted rack of wild boar or Roasted guinea hen, among many other things. All dishes can be purchased à la carte as well.
Olmsted
Why we love it: Because this is a restaurant that can make any meal feel special.
Itâs always a good time when you eat food from Olmsted, and their family-style Thanksgiving takeaway option is just as heartwarming, even now. It feeds four to five people, costs $180, and includes small luxuries like a sweet potato soufflĂ© with a sweet-potato purĂ©e, toasted pecans, and coconut marshmallows and smoked duck breasts, offered on the crown.
Tanoreen
Why we love it: Because itâs the best bet for a big(-ish) family meal.
For $350, this Bay Ridge family favorite has an Arab-influenced Thanksgiving special to feed ten (this can be customized for fewer people) including turkey, hashwi (rice and lamb stuffing), baked sweet potatoes, and fatoosh salad. Free delivery in Bay Ridge but orders can be delivered anywhere else for a fee.
Kimika
Why we love it: Because you can get porchetta and truffles.
The thriving Japanese-meets-Italian Nolita newcomer is offering Kimikaâs Thanksgiving Feast, for four to six people at $395. The feast has interesting spins on classics like a choice of âturchettaâ or porchetta with truffle gravy, miso mustard, salsa verde, and cranberry mostarda, and Japanese Sweet Rice Stuffing with porcini and matsutake mushrooms and chestnuts. Included is the bragging rights to say youâve had a meal from Kimika.
Breads Bakery
Why we love it: Because babka.
For a more casual Thanksgiving spread, like a lunch or a brunch, takeout from Breads is a solid one-stop option with their variety of savory and sweet treats. For the meal, thereâs a Savory Squash Tart, and Breads stuffing mix (cubed challah and babka tossed in olive oil, herbs, and spices) and Harvest Babka: a savory babka filled with roasted sweet potato, red onion and GruyĂšre cheese. For dessert, of course thereâs the fabled babka pie â a Thanksgiving spin on their famous babka â as well as apple-crumb pie. And yes, weâre done saying âbabka,â for now.
Atoboy
Why we love it: Because everything this kitchen makes is wonderful.
The team behind this modern Korean hotspot has created a unique Thanksgiving menu for pickup and delivery, including a grilled, whole Spatchcocked chicken, ssam vegetables, chicken moo, crĂšme fraĂźche and kaluga caviar, and a whole lot more. The prix-fixe menu feeds four people and costs $195.
For pies that are half the price of trendy bakeries, and twice as good: Margaret Palca in Red Hook. Her pumpkin, pecan, and apple pies start at $23 dollars. Throw in some pumpkin-cheesecake squares too because theyâre seriously the most delicious splurge in town. Palca suggests ordering pies by Friday the 20th, but notes there are always extra pies in stock for walk-ins.
For a fancy and enchanted Thanksgiving bite outdoors, done responsibly: The Standard Grill at The Standard, High Line will be serving a festive all-day Thanksgiving menu from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., with heated outdoor seating and very limited guests.
For a simple Thanksgiving knish: Black Seed Bagels has a Thanksgiving knish for takeout. Itâs stuffed with roasted turkey, whipped confit garlic mashed potatoes, sweet potato and everything-bagel stuffing, buttered Brussels sprouts and cranberry jelly. $15 for two knishes.
For a locally sourced, chef-made, frozen Thanksgiving meal to eat whenever you want: Ipsa, the newest âfine frozen foodâ company vowing to change and how and what people eat at home, has a promising Thanksgiving capsule menu.
For some pre-batched cocktails: Leyenda has a dangerously tempting drinks to-go option. All you have to do is order your cocktails, keep them chilled, and then pour over ice when youâre ready to relax a little.
