Kevin Feige Teases the Origins of Scarlet Witch’s Powers

WandaVision: Kevin Feige Teases the Origins of Scarlet Witch’s Powers

When Wanda and Pietro Maximoff made their MCU debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron, fans were initially introduced to the explanation that the twins’ superpowers came from the Mind Stone due to a Hydra experiment that they participated in. However, it seems like there’s something more to the twins’ origin story than what was first revealed, especially when it has been recently confirmed in The Wakanda Files: A Technological Exploration of the Avengers and Beyond book that the reason the Maximoff siblings were chosen for the experiments was because of their unique number of genetic markers.

In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has opened up about Disney+’s highly-anticipated MCU series WandaVision, confirming that the series will indeed touch upon the true origin story of Scarlet Witch’s untapped powers.

“If you look at the Infinity Saga, I don’t think any single person has gone through more pain and trauma than Wanda Maximoff. And no character seems to be as powerful as Wanda Maximoff. And no character has a power-set that is as ill-defined and unexplored as Wanda Maximoff,” Feige said. “So it seemed exploring that would be worthwhile post-Endgame. Who else is aware of that power? Where did it come from? Did the Mind Stone unlock it?”

This revelation is very exciting as Scarlet Witch’s origin story might potentially lead to the confirmation of the popular House of M theory where, in the comics, Wanda was the one who created the mutants. Since the announcement of WandaVision, fans have been speculating that the series would be one of the ways that Marvel Studios could introduce the existence of the mutants within the MCU.

Set in the 1950s, WandaVision will follow the story of Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany’s superhero characters Scarlet Witch and Vision. The series blends the style of classic sitcoms with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff and Vision—two super-powered beings living their ideal suburban lives—begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.

It has also been confirmed through previously released set photos that the series will be featuring the Sentient World Observation and Response Department or better known as S.W.O.R.D. which is a subdivision of S.H.I.E.L.D. that deals with alien threats that jeopardize world security.  However, it is still unclear whether prominent S.W.O.R.D. members such as S.W.O.R.D. leader Abigail Brand will also appear in the series or not but this would definitely mark the live-action debut of the department and the first Marvel property from the Fox-Disney merger that will be integrated into Marvel Studios’ Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The series will also see the return of Kat Dennings to the MCU, reprising her role as Darcy Lewis which she last portrayed in 2013’s Thor: The Dark World along with Randall Park returning as FBI Agent Jimmy Woo from Ant-Man and the Wasp. It will also feature MCU newcomers Kathryn Hahn and Teyonah Parris as the grown-up version of Monica Rambeau, a character who first made her appearance in last year’s Captain Marvel.
