Cast Your Fate to the Wind was composed by Vince Guaraldi and is a jazz standard worth studying not only for understanding the poly-rhythmic five over four pattern but also as piece to refine your arranging skills. This piano lesson is about arranging melodic fills using quarter note triplet for jazz standard repertoire pieces. I decided to use latin tinged quarter note triplets so as to stamp my own arrangement for teaching purpose .of how to use a latin montuno in the left hand as a melodic fill for one or two bars during the turnaround measures. The Cuban montuno as a melodic fill is demonstrated by accenting beat four as well as the eighth note that comes after beat four commonly known as “and” of beat 4. Most arrangers of this jazz standard will play full chords on beats one and three in a quarter note fashion instead of using two groups of quarter note triplets.
