REISSUE: “Square Biz” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Teena Marie

Teena Marie (alias ‘Vanilla Child’) is one of the Motown artists whom helped to create a new landscape for funk, soul and pop music. “Square Biz” is a single from Teena’s 1981 self-produced project titled “It Must Be Magic”. This magnificent piece of funk and groove is a display of the power of this artist’s ability to capture the essence with her talent and dedication to her genre. Not only has Teena been able to move a soulful ballad along with Mr. Rick James, but also create an original groove which plays out on its own. This single was a shift in the early 80s towards a new dance/funk direction and even today as old school continues to bring back the “magic” that only Teena could bring.

I have taken the 12” vocal and instrumental of “Square Biz” and worked the funky groove into a more underground downbeat edge in portions. The original groove is kept intact and move breakdowns are a new element for this old school classic. “Everybody get up!”
