Jimmy Ponder is a name I knew of for many years being a jazz guitar fan and player for almost 40 years now. Unfortunately, I never checked him out until fairly recently.
I missed a lot over the years. He plays a big beautiful Super 400 guitar with a thumb style rooted in Wes Montgomery but he is no clone. He has a sound that is his own and is a deep player.
These cuts are collected from few years leading up to the release date and have some different settings and groups. The sound is excellent and the music superb.
Jimmy was recently interviewed/essayed in Fretboard Journal and his story is a real jazz story–hard and good times. He still plays in Pittsburgh apparently and if I lived closer I would be there.
Since I was involved with this I must defer to my friend Anders Jonasson. I will say that it was fun to do and also that the picture of Jimmy on the back was taken by another good friend, Jamie Pringle, not as is listed for me.
As of June 1, this cracked the JazzWeek chart at #17…so perhaps the world is ready after all for Jimmys latest!)
Super music and the condidion of the CD was like new. Amazon for me, is the BEST way to buy music CDs.
Yeah Doug here is my review,,,,non objective as always when it comss to Ponder,,as jazzguitarist myself he is my main influence.
Anyway,,this new album is not as easy to digest as other ones by JP,,this is not only groovy soul jazz,it is JAZZ played by a mature master. Here we find music by trumpteter Woody Shaw and music closely related to Miles repertoire from the 60;S.in this case “Seven Steps to heaven” which Jimmy and the guys turns into masterpiece. My favourite tune on thsi CD is “Too late Now” Jimmys version is very convincing and you really feel that the title IT S TOO LATE makes sense,,in my own case a love story that never came true,,and now it is too late..Jimmys tone is just beautiful,,I am getting very sentimental when I listen to his playing here,,the sound is very close to what John Leslie had in his best moments,,,and as always there is groove blues..here it is called “Kickin da Bobo” who else than Jimmy can groove like this???
Also..my kudos to all great Piitsburgh players that is on this album…I hope to be able to play with Jimmy and those guys later this year. Douglas Malone “brasilian” comping behind Jimmy on “There will never be another you” is just great.
Please buy this album and support one of the best jaazguitarists ever. Anders Jonasson/
